Commemoration plaques One day in June 1953, in Three Cornered Copse, a commemoration stone to celebrate the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II was unveiled by the appropriate local dignitaries of the time. A dozen silver birches were also planted around the stone, and it still sits there, surrounded by most of the trees. The stone was cleaned and renovated in 2009 by the Friends group, with funding from the council. Another commemorative plaque to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee was installed alongside a copper beech tree in 2012, donated and presented by the Lord Lieutenant of East Sussex. This September a tree to commemorate next year’s Platinum Jubilee was planted, with another plaque, again by the Lord Lieutenant. (The Jubilee isn’t until next February, but that is a poor time to plant a tree, so September is appropriate.) Three more reasons to visit the copse, as if they were needed. Work days returned to the copse this summer,

with thanks to the Parks Department volunteer team, who spent a day clearing vegetation from the recently planted shrubs at the edge of the green. The weeds, brambles, nettles and thistles have been particularly successful this year and were throttling the new trees trying to establish themselves. Also, the top path had become impassable due to the weeds and the overhanging tree branches. This is the only bridle path through the copse, so with the help of the volunteer group we were able to tackle this as well. Tools and support were provided by the Ranger. For the first time since pandemic restrictions were imposed, we were working as normal, to the relief of everyone. The group is starting to become more active as restrictions have eased. With encouragement from the park rangers we aspire to be more independent from them, and hope to build our own tool collection to keep the copse under control. The Lord Lieutenant is the monarch’s personal representative in each of the administrative counties of the UK. The title is derived from a much older position which had the powers to raise a militia to support the royal cause. It’s now largely an administrative role but takes responsibility for a visit from the royal family to the county. It’s unlikely Her Majesty will need to visit Three Cornered Copse to see her plaques, but we’ll try and keep the paths clear, just in case. Simon Baxendale

News from the Brighton & Hove Society of Miniature Locomotive Engineers…

70 years of the Hove Park Miniature Railway On 23rd June 1951, the then Mayor of Hove opened the first miniature railway in Hove Park. Society records tell us that a total of seven steam locomotives carried nearly 500 passengers on that first day! 70 years on, that miniature railway has grown from a short ‘up & down’ ride to a continuous 610 metre ride, part of which is on exactly the same site as that first line.

Andrew Breese (left) and Barry Croucher cutting the cake

Over the years, the railway has expanded and improved, firstly with two ‘up & down’ tracks side by side, then in the early 1970s, a new continuous track was built and opened to passengers in March of 1975. Disaster struck in October 1987 when the infamous ‘hurricane’ devastated the miniature railway along with many of the great trees in Hove Park. The Society managed to keep a short length open whilst the whole railway was rebuilt. This took five years of weekend work with a grand re-opening on Sunday 21st June 1992 by the then Mayor of Hove. This is the miniature railway as you see it today in Hove Park. There are still steam locomotives to be seen but there is now a trend towards more modern styles of locomotion; ‘diesel’ and electric locomotives are popular with today’s builders and owners. Most of the passengers do not seem to mind what pulls the train as long as they can have a ride!

The original railway was built by members of the ‘locomotive section’ of the Brighton & Hove Society of Model Engineers. In 1961, that ‘locomotive section’ became a society in its own right, the Brighton & Hove Society of Miniature Locomotive Engineers, with the sole purpose of running and maintaining the miniature railway, a function which continues today.

The arrival of Covid-19 meant the closure of the railway until restrictions were lifted in July. It was hoped that a more comprehensive celebration of our 70th birthday year could go ahead during 2021 but we eventually settled for a celebration on August bank holiday Monday. The bunting went up, a number of photos showing progress over the years were displayed, nearly 700 passengers were carried and a wonderful birthday cake was enjoyed by Society members. The cutting of the cake was carried out by our two longest serving members, Andrew Breese and Barry Croucher. News from Conservative councillor for Hove Park Samer Bagaeen…

Hove Park Councillor News DYKE PARK TENNIS CLUB The club is continuing to press on with progressing a leasing arrangement with the Council and, in the interim, the repainting of three courts. We continue to support the club in achieving its ambitions for the courts and for the future of tennis in the park. SACKVILLE ROAD DEMOLITION With demolition having started in July, we have been supporting residents experiencing issues with dust from the construction site. If you are affected by the construction work in any way, do please get in touch. We expect to see activity intensify on site in October with cranes constructed. TOADS HOLE VALLEY The recording of the public exhibition from July is available on the developers’ website so please take a look: https://www.toadsholevalley. co.uk/online-exhibition UTILITIES DIGGING UP YOUR ROAD Morrison Telecom Services started work in September on behalf of Openreach in the Queen Mary Avenue/Woodland Avenue area of the ward. In some instances, they have caused quite a lot of damage to local connections so if you have had a negative experience as a result of this, please get in touch. NEVILL ROAD / SNAKEY HILL Some residents have written citing an increase in vans and cars being parked on the pavement at this end of Nevill Road. There’s also an increase in littering. We have asked officers to increase patrols in this area so if you notice something or if you have to get into the road to get around the parked vans do please get in touch. SHIRLEY DRIVE As some residents will know, a review of Zone P was completed between December 2020 and January 2021 with the major-

ity of respondents happy for the scheme to remain the same, with the exception of a small number of requested changes. Officers, and your councillors, have investigated these and met with concerned residents as we move to advertise the proposed changes in the Council’s bi-annual citywide Traffic Regulation Order (TRO). A TRO is the legal document required to make any changes to parking restrictions on the public highway, which also gives the public opportunity to comment on any proposals. As you read this, I anticipate that this citywide TRO will be out for comments by residents. Should any objections be received, the proposal would be taken before the next available Environment, Transport and Sustainability Committee, where the decision on how to proceed would be made. If no objections are received the order will be sealed and the changes implemented. Councillor Professor Samer Bagaeen

10 Meet a local resident…

Hove Park person…Claire Tompkins Claire Tompkins has recently moved from West Hove to the Hove Park area. She is a qualified breathwork coach. What is your background? I grew up in the Essex countryside before moving to Hove 21 years ago. I have worked in IT and then finance for most of my working life. What is breathwork? Conscious Connected Breathing is a powerful tool for healing and transformation. It is a style of diaphragmatic breath which, as well as strengthening the diaphragm and stabilising the core muscles, aids relaxation, reduces the levels of the stress hormone cortisol, and lowers the heart rate and blood pressure. This simple breath technique teaches a freer flowing breath. The increased oxygen flow can bring many physical benefits, such as boosting the immune system, improving sleep, increasing energy levels and sporting performance. It can also boost blood flow and oxygenation, and increases the rate of cell generation, leading to a more efficient lymphatic system. Breathwork can also relieve symptoms of depression, stress and anxiety, creating a sense of inner calm, peace and relaxation, and bringing clarity and focus. Breathwork enables us to process the stresses of everyday life, improving our physical and mental wellbeing and deepening the relationship with ourselves. How did you come to train as a breathwork coach? Breathwork wasn’t something I knew anything about, but I found myself at a workshop in London and was curious to find out more. I was totally unprepared for such a mind-blowing experience, bowled over by how an hour’s guided breathing

could evoke such feelings and sensations in my body. Even then I didn’t really understand the impact that a regular practice could have on one’s physical and mental wellbeing over time. I instantly felt a real connection with this practice and within the week I had signed up to the training and mentorship programme. I trained in Lanzarote with the BreathGuru who is one of the pioneers of Breathwork in the UK with over 17 years of experience. Now, after over fifty hours of case studies, several retreats diving deep into my own Breathwork, and a commitment to a daily practice, I am a qualified Breathwork coach. What do you like about living in the Hove Park area? I love the parks; I have a miniature dachshund and he loves exploring and meeting other dogs. For more information, visit thebreathworks.co.uk or email claire@thebreathworks.co.uk.

13 Meet Rev Ali Marshall…

On 2nd September St Leonard’s Church in New Church Road entered an official partnership with St Peter’s Church, Brighton. Rev Archie Coates of St Peter’s will be priest-in-charge at St Leonard’s and Rev Ali Marshall has become the new curate. Rev Ali told us more… What is your background? I am a curate at St Peter’s Brighton and have been here for five years. I have also been an Anglican chaplain at Sussex University. Before that I was a youth pastor at Holy Trinity Brompton and at St Stephen’s, Twickenham, and I completed an internship at St Aldate’s, Oxford. My links to Sussex go back further. Although I grew up in South London, I went to Christ’s Hospital School in Horsham where I sang in the chapel choir and was the lead drummer in the marching band. My wife, Sophie, will be joining me in leading St Leonard’s and we have two daughters, and a baby due to be born any moment. Outside of church and family life, I am a big sports fan. I support Nottingham Forest FC, Harlequins rugby team, I play for Rottingdean cricket and I have played in the Archbishop of Canterbury’s cricket eleven against the Vatican. I love swimming in the sea too.

Will the church roof be repaired?

Do you plan to move to West Hove?

Are you intending to get involved with the wider local community?

We are fortunate enough to currently live in Hove, near Brunswick Square, and we hope to move nearer in the next year or so. What are your plans for St Leonard’s? St Leonard’s will be the ‘west wing’ of the St Peter’s family of five churches. We see St Leonard’s as a real beacon of light. We will continue to have the traditional service every Sunday and we are also launching a new service in November for all ages which will have kids provision so that families can join in.

Yes – hopefully soon! Alongside other improvements including heating! The hall is currently being refurbished as a community hub and will be used as our place of worship while the work on the church is going on.

We can’t wait to get involved with every aspect of community life. We want to start some youth and kids clubs in the hall but we will (of course) continue the amazing work that St Leonard’s have been doing for years. We want to bless everyone from ages 0 to 100 and for people to see St Leonard’s as a place they can go to get support, to meet people and where everyone – whoever you are, wherever you live and whatever your background – will receive a warm welcome.

15 News from the Secret Garden Group…

Although the rats managed to chew their way through our Halloween decorations at the Secret Garden (behind St Leonard’s Church, New Church Road, Hove), we will still be holding a little celebration on the 31st October for young families in the community and anyone who would like to join us between 4pm and 6pm on the day. Over the past few years, the garden has become increasingly popular with local mums, dads and children all happy to enjoy the fun of Halloween in a darkening graveyard and garden setting!! This year we will do our best to entertain the young’uns and provide suitable refreshment for all. There will be sticky tricks and treats plus mulled wine and hubble bubble for the children. Also a prize for the most impressive outfit. Do come along and support this wonderful community space which has become a welcome retreat to so many during recent months. Our volunteers have continued to keep this a safe and welcome haven to all, which changes with every season. Let’s see what October has to bring. We look forward to seeing you on the 31st.

17 A local update…

Our first AGM since Lockdown was held on 7th September at the Big Beach Café. The existing four officers, two business and four resident reps were re-elected. Two new members – Tom Stear and Gary Heal - were elected to replace Jamie Heal and Paul Hirchfield, who were thanked for their support. Robert Nemeth gave his Chair’s report, which included items on LagoonFest, the Planting Scheme, Lagoon Clean-Ups, the skatepark, a friendship bench, crime and vandalism, the grass and the council’s Kingsway to the Sea project. He also announced that the committee will be discussing future improvement projects at our October meeting. I will send the minutes out in the next few weeks.

19 West Hove news…

Pavement Gardens Jennie Grant told us about a pretty fairy garden in Westbourne Gardens: “It was a lovely joint effort between my six-year-old daughter Inês and our recently widowed elderly neighbour Abraham. We did it about six months ago and it’s still going strong. The partnership between them was touching, especially as he had just lost his wife, Anne, of 43 years. Abraham, who originally is from Saudi Arabia, cleared the site for us, then Inês designed and planted (with me) the garden, and Abraham weeds and waters it daily. I just heard that someone destroyed one on Westbourne Street and we have all volunteered to rebuild it.”

21 News from the council…

Residents are being asked for their views on plans to protect and enhance the green spaces between the King Alfred Leisure Centre and Hove Lagoon. The council is working with community organisations to develop ‘Kingsway to the Sea’, a project to regenerate the underused and run-down spaces on the seafront in West Hove. The scheme aims to remodel the green spaces, improving biodiversity and providing leisure and sports facilities which are relevant to the needs and aspirations of residents. As part of the project, the council has launched a public consultation to find out how the space is currently being used and what local people would like to see. Work on the ‘Kingsway to the Sea’ project began back in 2018 when the West Hove Forum approached the council to work on plans to develop the area. Since then, council officers have been working with the West Hove Seafront Action Group (WHSAG) group whose members include local residents and representatives from businesses, clubs and voluntary organisations. This led to the council commissioning landscape architects Untitled Practice to create an initial design to help shape discussions with the WHSAG. The council were due to host a drop-in consultation event in September, with landscape architects and council officers available to answer questions and receive comments, ideas and feedback. The online questionnaire is the next phase of the consultation process. Feedback from the consultation will be used by the project team to produce the concept design which will be shared and

developed with the stakeholder group and considered by the council’s Tourism, Equalities, Communities & Culture Committee early next year. If this is approved, a planning application will be submitted. Councillor Martin Osborne, co-chair of the Tourism, Equalities, Communities and Culture Committee, said: “We know how much residents value these green spaces and would like to see them improved and updated. By taking part in this consultation, you can help us understand how we will best provide a safe and attractive green space which benefits everyone.” Paper copies of the questionnaire are available for those without access to the internet by contacting the council’s Seafront Office on 01273 292716 or email SeafrontOffice@brighton-hove.gov.uk. Make sure you include your name and postal address. You can find the consultation on the council’s consultation portal at: consultations. brighton-hove.gov.uk/business/ kingsway-to-the-sea. It closes on 3 October 2021.

23 News from Robert Nemeth and Garry Peltzer Dunn, Conservative councillors for Wish ward…

Wish Ward Councillor News Brighton & Hove City Council’s unique approach to pavement-weeding has made the national news numerous times over the summer – here’s the background story and our views on the matter.

Immediately after the 2019 election, a unilateral decision was taken to stop using glyphosates and there was even talk of an infra-red zapper. The consequences were immediately felt by residents with three key errors being made. The first issue was that no proper alternative, as initially predicted, was identified. The second was that no phasing of new methods was introduced. The third was that the starting point was a neglected city that already had major weed issues. The current position is that glyphosates are not being used but no alternative is planned. Weeds, along with shoots from stumps, are now often over 6ft in height. At a time when so-called ‘Active Travel’ is to be encouraged, walking is being made more difficult; not least for the elderly, the disabled and anyone pushing a buggy. The city is now looking even more neglected and the financial costs – for largescale resurfacing and injury compensation – are uncertain but large. Having put so much time and effort into pushing for planting schemes (not least at the Lagoon, but also at Wish Park, Davis Park and Stoneham Park, and on Bound-

POETS CORNER

In 2016, Councillors on a cross-party basis requested that consideration should be given to stopping the use of glyphosate herbicides and introducing non-chemical mechanical alternatives. The matter was indeed considered by the Council’s Environment, Transport & Sustainability Committee and the idea was ruled out on the basis that the Council has a legal duty to ensure that footpaths are free from trip hazards.

ary Road), we are concerned that pavements are now seen as a place to grow plants rather than a place to walk healthily and safely. We feel that our planting efforts should be much more ambitious than weeds in pavement cracks. There are literally tens of acres of concrete across the transport network but also on private property including front gardens that could be put back to nature, long before we need to risk safety on pavements. We have been quietly helping vulnerable residents where there are safety issues and, encouragingly, have seen numerous streets in the area where residents are taking on the weeds themselves. This is ultimately an unsatisfactory situation though and a major re-think is required. We’ll stay on the case. 25 Could Portland Road be the site of our city’s first Michelin-starred restaurant?

Ciaráns’ Portland Road in Hove used to be a down-at-heel row of “greasy spoon” cafés, oily car spares dealers and kebab shops pumping out the odour of frying fat.

The latest addition is a fine dining restaurant run by two Ciarans (one from Hackney, one from Dublin) who met whilst working at acclaimed Hove eatery, Cin Cin, which has just opened an outpost in London’s Fitzrovia. Situated opposite another Portland Road landmark, Barney’s Deli’ (a Mecca for cheese lovers), Ciarans’ specialises in modern European, especially Italian, food. The 20-cover space, with outside bar at rear, was heaving last Saturday as I tucked into generous sharing plates of creamy burrata, delicia pumpkin, crispy sage with brown butter (£9), and Tunworth cheese on toasted sourdough luxuriantly topped with Umbrian truffle (£10). A rosehip glazed fig complemented the confit duck leg with celeriac puree (£14) perfectly while my companion went gaga over the buttery coco beans served with delicately textured clams in a golden cidre sauce (£10). Ciaran Jones, the ex-Londoner who runs front of house, told me that whilst the restaurant has an excellent range of wines and beers (which I can attest to), Wednesdays are bring-your-own night (booking essential), often featuring guest chefs they’ve previously worked with. I’d just missed an appearance by Aaron Potter, the head chef of Chelsea’s Miche-

Hovarians have some excellent restaurants on the doorstep with the likes of Fourth and Church and Burnt Orange recently garnering glowing reviews from heavyweight critics such as Grace Dent and Jay Rayner, but nothing worthy of a star from the venerable tyre company yet. With these newcomers turning out such top grade grub, however, it might not be long before that changes. The gentrification of Portland Road is well and truly underway. 27 Meet a local resident who has written a book…

Poets Person…Phil Nye Phil Nye has lived in Poets Corner for his whole life. He has recently written a book on his experiences with the local music scene. How do you think Poets Corner has changed over the years? POETS CORNER

It’s a lot more hipster than it used to be which is not necessarily a great thing but if you look hard enough there is something for everyone. Tell us more about your book… Come along with me as I go from middle-aged middle management man to aspiring rockstar. Along the way I will encounter a group of characters that will forever change the way that I view life and it will propel me into situations that would provide me with many lasting memories. I will test myself in situations that I could never have imagined being part of and I will make new attachments that will enrich my life thereafter. There will be sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll, and above all life-affirming lessons as to what is important. You can use this as a template as to what can happen if you decide to take a chance and follow a path that maybe you thought was beyond your reach or capabilities. Above all this is a story of friendship and making a difference to people’s lives. Whether you like music or not I do feel you will find some value in how we deal with different situations and individuals. Do you have a favourite music venue in the city? The Neptune Inn on the coast road in Hove is a Mecca to witness some of the most skilled artists offering a diverse range of genres. It also a pub and not a gastro nursery ha-ha. It became my own personal musical university and I love all the people I have been lucky enough to

meet there. Go there, you too will fall in love with the place. You work with adults with learning disabilities. Tell us more about that… Music really is a way of bringing people together and it helps in breaking down communication barriers that some can face. 28 A local update…

Friends of Stoneham Park On Friday 10 September, conditions were perfect for us as we held our first ever outdoor cinema in Stoneham Park. People had applied for tickets to come to the screening over a year ago and now we were ready to go ahead! The screen itself - all three and a half metres of it - was put into position (with some trepidation, I must add), our audience laid out their picnic blankets, the sun dipped down below the horizon and darkness fell upon Stoneham Park. Then, the projector metaphorically whirred and flickered into life and a beautifully crisp picture came on the screen. Our first outdoor cinema had begun!

The picture quality was perfect, the sound was amazing, and our little snack bar did a roaring trade in popcorn and cold drinks. The event exceeded our expectations by some margin. The picture quality was perfect, the sound was amazing, and our little snack bar did a roaring trade in popcorn and cold drinks. After the disappointments of poor weather and Covid induced cancellations last year, we were all delighted at how wonderful the outdoor cinema event was. The audience’s rapturous round of applause at the end of the movie was testament indeed to its success. We expect to screen two more films before Christmas, so please ‘like’ our page on Facebook and keep an eye on our website for more information as to titles, dates, and times. suggested an outdoor cinema, to see it all come together with last month’s screening of The Goonies was personally very rewarding. It is hard to say in these times with any certainty what will go ahead and what will end up being postponed. But we cannot alter the change in the seasons that is now upon us. The leaves of our magnificent elm trees will start to brown and fall to the ground, the temperatures will drop a bit and, as the nights draw in, what better times to show, we hope, another film or two? New interest in the healing powers of mushrooms It is probable that it was fungi breaking down rocks into earth that eventually created the soil allowing the evolution of plant life. A mushroom’s outer form or ‘fruiting body’ merely crowns what is underneath it. There is a complex and intricate mycelial network that unites entire ecosystems, and the largest terrestrial organism by mass is a honey mushroom found in the mountainous forested regions of the US. Fungi produce compounds that lab technicians still cannot reproduce, and we have barely scraped the surface of what we could learn from them. You may have seen recent reports on serious research into the medicinal use of chemicals found in mushrooms. These substances, called psilocybin, are being used to treat conditions ranging from drug or alcohol dependence to depression and post-traumatic stress disorder. While the practical implications of this research are still to be fully confirmed, it is timely to remember that other cultures have long been harnessing the healing power of mushrooms, and we now have the advantage of understanding the science behind how they can benefit the human system.

the aftermath of a pandemic and also as part of a preventative approach – if your internal health is good, your external defences stand a better chance of adapting appropriately to whatever is encountered in its environment. As ever, this does not mean we can all rush out to the nearest forest and start filling bags with unidentified fungi – aside from the potential illegality, it is absolutely essential that a reputable and reliable source is used or disastrous effects could ensue, possibly even fatal. If you are interested in benefitting from the compounds found in medicinal mushrooms, this is best achieved by using products that have been subjected to rigorous testing, and which are supervised by a trained practitioner. 32 Local history from Lindsey Tydeman of The Keep archive centre…

Stamping the modern on Grand Avenue In this photograph of Grand Avenue in October 1960 (ref ARG/3/8078), the figure of Joan of Arc on Hove’s war memorial looks as if she is in dialogue with the newly-built Coombe Lea. Perhaps she’s expressing admiration that a plot which once contained a house with four family bedrooms and a servants’ wing now holds a block of 84 flats on 11 floors with 12 internal garages and a range of 21 more at the back! The building of Coombe Lea must have been quite an event in Hove between 1958 and 1960. There’s a very full brown paper bag in The Keep’s repository – handles broken! - which contains all the plans and associated correspondence (ref DO/C/6/19223). As you can imagine, the bulk of the drawings concentrate on the

structure itself and its connecting utilities, drains and sewers. The specifications for the making of the precast concrete beams alone run to eight typed pages! But it’s also interesting to view the layout of the flats on each floor as this demonstrates that the builders were trying to appeal to buyers of every pocket. Facing Grand Avenue itself were two three-bedroom flats on opposite sides of the block, their living rooms on the corners of the building giving a wonderful view of Hove and the seafront. Between them were two one-bedroom flats. Facing

In April this year three residents of Coombe Lea stood on the roof holding a yellow banner with the words, ‘Say No to Massive 5G Mobile Masts on Coombe Lea’. Their actions, together with the 158 letters of objection to radio masts in a heritage area, persuaded the Planning Committee to refuse permission. But it’s interesting to note that the Council’s Heritage Team had had no objection to the plan. In their view, Coombe Lea was already ‘impacting’ the ‘heritage assets’ so roof-level antennas would cause ‘less than substantial harm’. It’s clear that even after 60 years, prejudice remains against modernist blocks of flats. Perhaps they’ll be counted as ‘heritage assets’ by the end of the next 60! www.thekeep.info

36 News from the council…

Electoral wards consultation The Local Government Boundary Commission wants to hear what the city’s communities think about their local area. A consultation on proposals for the city council’s electoral wards is running until 1 November 2021. The commission is the independent body that draws these boundaries, and the last review took place in 2003. Since that time Brighton & Hove’s communities have changed, and the population has grown. Boundary reviews help make sure that councillors represent about the same number of electors; ward arrangements help the council work effectively; and ward patterns reflect community ties and identities. The commission will use local views to help it draw up proposals for new council ward boundaries. Council leader Cllr Phélim Mac Cafferty strongly encouraged residents to take part: “The geographical areas which are used to elect city councillors often have important and historic community ties and hold a place in residents’ hearts. And we want to see these areas, or wards as they are called, faithfully represent how people think and feel about their community. It’s really important that how geographical areas are grouped together for elections makes sense to the people living there.” To take part in the consultation, visit: consultation.lgbce.org.uk/node/29490

Free parking for one hour in Churchill Square’s Orange car park (Churchill 1) in Regency Road East is available for people attending the new site for their jabs over the coming weeks and months. The new centre also offers walk-in vaccinations for 16 and 17 year olds. Alistair Hill, the council’s director of public health, said: “It’s important that everyone takes up the vaccine offer, especially

because so many more of us are mixing socially again. We all need to consider the vulnerable people in our community who are most at risk of becoming ill if they catch Covid. Getting vaccinated is the best way to protect yourself and others.” To book your Covid-19 vaccination appointment at the new Brighton & Hove vaccination centre call 119, visit nhs.uk/covidvaccine, or walk in any time between 8.30am and 7pm.

39 News of a new venture for local charity Stay Up Late…

Sport Buddies Stay Up Late Sport Buddies is a new project within the Stay Up Late charity, based in Hove. Stay Up Late campaigns, and coordinates buddy projects, for people with learning disabilities to lead active social lives. In 2013 Gig Buddies started in Brighton & Hove, pairing people with learning disabilities or autism with volunteers to go to gigs together, whatever their gig. Much care goes into matching buddies to create friendships and fun for people who like to do the same things.

Like Gig Buddies, Sports Buddies is for people across the whole of Sussex. If you know someone who would like a Sports Buddy there is a simple form on the website under ‘Apply for a Buddy in Sussex’. Forms can be done online or downloaded. Whilst waiting to match our buddies we run Active Socials monthly. Fun activities, with movement, that all can enjoy. The first Sports Buddy Social was the project launch on 24th August on Hove Lawns. Our partners Brighton Table Tennis Club, Nam Yang Martial Arts and Albion in the Community joined in to demonstrate their skills and get attendees active and involved. Those who enjoy a dance grooved along to a lively playlist on our Stay Up Late mobile speaker. We are making links across Sussex with inclusive
