The Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve - 1922 This photograph is of the R.N.V.R. (Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve) display, on a summer’s day in 1922, on the lawn, which still exists at the foot of Hove Street. Topographically, the scene has changed much since then. All the R.N.V.R buildings have gone – can you spot any other changes?

LOCAL GROUP.. The monthly article from the Hove Civic Society....

SUPPORT HOVE CIVIC SOCIETY IN LOOKING AFTER OUR ENVIRONMENT Hove Civic Society was founded in 1963 to protect the amenity in Hove, so is 51 years old. It is still very active commenting on proposals that affect us all, such as planning applications. We promote projects like planting street trees, and creating a plinth on the seafront for statues. We support the Rampion offshore wind farm, and hope that the Energy Secretary will approve it as a fossilfree way of keeping the lights on when he decides on 17.7.14. We have also been campaigning to utilise the waste heat from Shoreham Power Station, which could save even more carbon emissions than Rampion. We hold lectures every month on Thursdays at Courtlands Hotel, The Drive, Hove. They begin at the AGM on Thurs 16th Oct, and continue every month until next spring, when we have visits to interesting sites, such as Newhaven lifeboat. Last year we welcomed the following speakers, who gave interesting talks on these subjects: Jason Kitcat, Green leader of the council, speaking on: ‘Towards a One Planet Smart City’ Louise Hume, writer and teacher, on ‘Wonderful women of Brighton and Hove’ Jackie Marsh-Hobbs, cultural historian and guide on: ‘Palmeira Mansions, Extraordinary Victorian house’ Dr Geoffrey Meade, geographer, lecturer and guide, on: ‘Rocks and Soils beneath the City’ Margaret Kimber, education presenter, on: ‘190 years of the Royal National Lifeboat Association’ Peter Hill, chairman of the Friends of West Blatchington windmill, on ‘A light hearted introduction to Sussex windmills’ Panel of experts in discussion forum on: ‘Hove by 2030. Housing, transport and open spaces’. We are looking for new members, particularly those who would like to work with us on committee or

subcommittees, which include street trees, plinth, infrastructure, and social. Please look at our website www.hovecivicsociety.org for more details, or call me, John Kapp, secretary, on 01273 417997, or email me on johnkapp@btitnernet.com.

An update from The Secret Garden

Secret Garden Blooms A lot has happened at the Secret Garden since our last article. You may have visited us recently as part of the Sussex Beacon Garden Gadabout, or joined our expanding band of volunteers or just dropped by out of curiosity.

If so you will have noticed we now have a greenhouse kindly donated to us by a local resident, four beehives run by the lovely Chris Hogarth and three lovely pink wheelbarrows donated by Mayberry Garden Centre. Also our raised beds have been built, funded by Southern Water and the Sussex Community Foundation.Pupils from Saint Bede’s School in Hailsham visited the Secret

Garden in June and made a huge difference by partly filling the raised beds and completing our pond. We are currently planning a fence to surround the pond in such a way that it is both attractive and will keep our younger visitors safe. One idea is to recycle bicycle wheels thereby making a ‘bespoke’ fence. Many of the paths have been made much clearer with a donation of woodchip and we are currently undergoing the strenuous task of building the main path from the gate to the bench. Any strong guys and gals looking to help with this would be very much appreciated. Our vegetables are still growing amazingly well; we have recently harvested garlic, onions, broad beans, potatoes, cabbage and purple sprouting broccoli and our runner beans are again shooting to the sky. This year we have also had donations of wild flowers, sunflowers, fuchsias, wallflowers, sweet peas and many other blooms that have made the area beautiful as well as productive, and the poppies that have sprung up look stunning. If you would like to be a part of this special community garden located behind St Leonard’s Church, New Church Road, Hove, please contact Joi Jones, Secretary, at secretgarden730@gmail.com. local sports... Regular article about local exercise opportunity by local West Hove resident Isobel Muir...

Outdoor Gym As summer is here and the days are longer, one certainly doesn’t wish to be stuck in a gym, so why not head out to Hove Park and make use of the excellent free outdoor gym facilities there. Over the last few years the equipment has expanded from its beginning in the space left by the demolition of the old Rugby Club building.

You will still find the original items there, including a cross trainer type thing, three different arm machines (pull up, push down and another I can’t remember…), a strange sideways double leg-swinging thing, a leg press and a sit-up table with toe bar. This collection of machines are the traditional sort of machines you would find in an indoor gym but, being outside and free, are populated by all sorts of people and much less sweaty due to fresh air. Every time I pass by (a lot, as I seem to be mainly in Hove Park doing various sorts of running), the machines are in use by a variety of people, from young children playing to elderly folk who look like they decided to leap on on a whim whilst out walking. As all the machines are based on the user’s bodyweight, there is no faffing with weights or futilely trying to find the right setting, so it’s just a case of getting on and getting going. (There are instructions – though the ones on the sideways double leg-swinging thing made no sense whatsoever.)

On the opposite side of the park next to the children’s playground, there are pull-up bars of various heights, parallel bars and wooden beams for balancing on, along with stepping-stone logs, some other logs for weaving in and out of, some for jumping over, one for triceps dips and another for sit-ups. Log central: this section is always very busy with various groups/personal trainers/individuals making use of all the equipment, adding their own ropes, tyres etc to broaden the uses of the provisions. Yesterday, as I was scoping out the facilities, this area was as always very busy. It was a nice, sunny evening but I know the equipment is in use all year round. What more could you ask for? Free, accessible, well-maintained equipment with natural air conditioning and not a hint of MTV or a £45 monthly membership fee.

For more details about my life in exercise please visit my blog “IMFitHove”. Thanks. Happy exercising! isobelmuir@hotmail.com

BRUNSWICK, WEST HOVE AND PORTSLADE

YOUR LOCAL U3A What is the U3A? U3A stands for the University of the Third Age but it runs no courses, requires no qualifications and gives none! It is organised by its members and funded by low annual subscriptions. What it does do is offer opportunities for people to meet in groups to follow their interests or pursue new ones, as well as the chance to attend talks by interesting speakers, plus social events and outings. Who can join the U3A? Everyone in the Third Age is welcome. The ‘Third Age’ refers to the time after full-time employment and/or parental responsibility, when we are freer to pursue our own interests. No qualifications are required, and none are given. What do we do? Brunswick, West Hove & Portslade U3A has about 25 special interest groups which meet regularly throughout ‘term’ times. The interests covered by these groups range over Theatre Visits, Reading Fiction, Music, Languages, Writing, Walks, Art, Play Reading and Theatre Studies, Gardens, Discussion Groups, Patchwork… and many more. Suggestions for new groups are always welcome. Each group has a co-ordinator, with members of the group sharing knowledge and experience, discussing ideas. Groups usually meet at members’ homes, although obviously theatre or garden visits and walks take place elsewhere.

If you would like more information, you can contact our Membership Secretary: Cynthia Barnes 01273 550745 / cynthia.barnes@talktalk.net or visit our website: u3asites. org.uk/brunswick-westward . You don’t have to live in a particular catchment area in order to join a U3A, you can join any – or more than one! There are six local U3As covering Brighton and Hove and the surrounding area, with many more nationwide and internationally. Details available from U3A National Office: Telephone 0208 466 6139 or national.office@u3a.org.uk.

We also have a programme of interesting talks and visits to places of local interest, plus social events for all members, and at the AGM in November we have some entertainment and again a chance to socialise. What does it cost? There is an annual fee, currently £16 and that’s it! Talks, social events and visits may have a small additional charge. How to join or just find out a little more: On Wednesday, 10 September 2014 at 2pm we will have an Introductory Meeting to be held at the Ralli Hall, near Hove Station, where you can hear what is going on, meet members and see what all our groups are up to – and if you like what you see, you can join.

READER’S LETTER... Please Help Trace A Missing Picture Around 1972-3, North Street, Portslade, was being developed and a customer in our shop asked if we knew anyone who would like to buy a large garden shed for £200: 50ft x 20ft, two years old, that had been used as a temporary office. My husband and I looked at it and bought it. We talked the firm, PD Transport, into helping take it down. With lots of dads the following weekend, it was moved onto St Christopher’s playing fields off Glebe Villas. It took three months to get planning permission and a piece of ground from St Leonard’s Church to build a Guide Headquarters in the then rectory garden. Fund-raising events went ahead. At the same time, the Regent dance hall/ cinema was being pulled down, so one Sunday two dads with a van bought (for £10) two WCs with cisterns, two washbasins with taps, and two stainless steel double sinks with draining boards. They also bought four fireproof swing doors from the cinema, still with ‘Circle’ in the round glass, and lots of useful bits. It was all stored in the cellar of 46 Boundary Road, Hove. Planning permission came. Guide fathers and friends worked hard, but even so, it took about nine months to build, as it had to have a solid base laid and a new fire door. We had a kitchen with a hatch to the main hall, two posh toilets, a Ranger (older Guides) room, and loft storage for camp gear. The Mayor and Mayoress of Hove opened it with the County Commissioner. In exchange for the land, the church had the right to use the headquarters 14 times a year. The Guide Headquarters was pulled down when the new Church House was built in place of the rectory

some 20 years ago. The Guides and the Brownies then went back to using the church hall. The reason for recounting this story is that I am looking for this picture, which has gone astray. It was made in wooden marquetry by a family friend and hung over the door in the headquarters until the building was taken down. It had written on it: ‘God be our Guide’ and it has great sentimental value. If anyone knows anything of its whereabouts, please contact me c/o the West Hove Directory. Eileen Odom

LOCAL activities... Hove community acupuncture at the Tree of Life Centre

Low-cost treatment for the whole community Portland Road’s low-cost acupuncture clinic is open for three days each week at the Tree of Life Centre. It was the first of its kind in the UK - without an appointment, you can walk in off the street and receive the highest quality acupuncture treatment in a beautiful studio space, at a reduced rate. Treatment is open to everyone and is charged on a sliding scale of £20-£30 depending on what you can afford. Paul from Brighton explains: “I was diagnosed with tendinosis in both hands in January 2014 so I decided to give acupuncture a go, even though I was sceptical. I never expected it to be so effective and I’m grateful to the low cost acupuncture drop-in for providing the opportunity for me to access the treatment. Thank you so much for your help.” Every patient receives individual treatment and care in a spacious and specially equipped room where several people are present at the same time. Modesty and privacy are always respected, and most people find the atmosphere inviting, comfortable and relaxing. Tony from West Sussex said: “After my last treatment, I woke up feeling better than I had for the last 10 years!

The drop-in clinics are brilliant and I am so glad I can access them.” The team who run the clinic are committed to treating all patients with the same care, respect & quality as private one-to-one acupuncture sessions. They are all members of the British Acupuncture Council (BAcC) and the Association of Community & Multi-bed Acupuncture Clinics, (ACMAC) and abide by their professional codes of conduct and ethics. LOCAL gardening... Here is our monthly gardening feature written by Nareesa Sulaiman, a local garden designer...

In the garden...August 2014 Although the weather is forever unpredictable on the south coast, August is the month when we hope to find time to relax in the garden, maybe have a barbecue or enjoy a glass of something chilled with friends. Of course, if you have time to potter, there’s always lots to do... Weeding and deadheading While weeding through the borders, keep your eyes open for any new seedlings that may have sprung up. Even if you do not want more of a particular plant, it is worth nurturing new seedlings as you may be able to swap them with other gardeners for something that you do want or possibly even give them as Christmas presents. Use a hand trowel to scoop the seedling out with some soil and carefully plant into its own pot or seedling tray. Pruning and taking cuttings Cut back any plants that have flopped over and become untidy. This is a good month to take cuttings from plants such as Fuchsia, Dianthus (carnations/pinks), Pelargonium and Osteospermum. Many of us are unsure about growing plants from cuttings but it is remarkably straightforward. Cut a 10cm non-flowering shoot, remove lower leaves and dip stem in Hormone Rooting Powder (available from Garden Centres, £2-4, lasts for

many seasons). Place in a pot of compost, water and place on a window sill. In four weeks, the cutting will have roots and can be potted on. Keep in a frost-free place for planting out next spring. Watering Although your lawn may turn brown in dry weather, grass is tough and will regenerate when we do get rain so, in aid of water conservation, be proud of your brown lawn! Continue to water the borders through dry periods and pay particular attention to pots and hanging baskets. Most plants will also benefit from a feed once a week to give greater flower and fruit production. Feature plant for August...Dahlia Regaining popularity, Dahlias come in an impressive range of colours and petal shapes. They bloom throughout late summer and make good cut flowers. Great places to visit If you are stuck for plants that work well in a coastal location, pop along to Driftwood on Sunday 3rd August. This Seaford garden is densely planted to create the illusion of a much larger space. Tea and cakes too! www.driftwoodbysea.co.uk Happy gardening! Nareesa leafgardendesigns.co.uk 07946 527280
