WELCOME TO THE WEST HOVE DIRECTORY! This magazine has to be put together two weeks ahead of distribution. With so much uncertainty at the moment due to the coronavirus, there is a high possibility that some of the events and classes mentioned in our April issue may not go ahead, so please do check before attending. We still have all our usual articles for you this month as well as a tribute to a very special West Hove resident who died in February and news of VE Day 75 celebrations planned for May. Let’s hope for some bright weather so that if everything else is cancelled we can at least get out for a walk! The West Hove Directory Team info@westhovedirectory.co.uk www.westhovedirectory.co.uk

Volunteers needed from the West Hove community…

HOVE JUNIOR SCHOOL NEEDS GOVERNORS Hove Junior School is currently looking for two new co-opted governors to join our governing body and would love to attract individuals from our local community who have the skills and experience to contribute to the success of our school. As an inner city school we are keen to make the governing body more reflective of the diversity of our pupils. You do not need to be a parent to become a coopted governor. This is a challenging but hugely rewarding role where you can make a real difference to young people, give something back to your local community and use and develop your skills in a board-level environment.

5

We would especially like to hear from you if you have: A desire to contribute to and represent our diverse community An open and enquiring mind The ability to look at issues objectively

As a large and growing school, we’re keen to appoint individuals with experience in HR, risk management, data analysis, safeguarding, SEND and Health and Safety to add to the existing range of skills on the board. The full governing board meets twice a term, with separate committees made up of smaller groups of governors which meet 3-6 times a year. Most of our current governors work full time and manage to fit in their role around their other commitments, but we welcome retirees, part time workers or anyone with the skills and passion for the job.

A tribute to a very well-known resident of West Hove who sadly died in February…

WEST HOVE

EILEEN ODOM 1928-2020 Typically, all Mum wanted us to say about her was that SHE TRIED. She was involved with many local activities until her accident in 2018. Her favourite place was her beach hut near the Lagoon, where she met friends and passers-by; handed out towels to help young families and soaked up the sunshine. Mum lived in Shoreham until 1938 when the family moved to 61 Coleridge Street and she went to Davigdor Road School. At 14 she became a bacon cutter at Lipton’s, George Street, and still used the skill of cutting butter and cheese into 1oz pieces when she took “rations” into a local primary school and talked about her wartime memories. Her creative energy went into bringing us up and making 9 our clothes, and into the watchmaker’s shop in Boundary Road, where she won prizes for window displays. Her life changed at 37: her mother died, so Grandad came to live with us; she became a helper with the St Leonard’s Guides. She was “Captain” to so many Guides and a driving force behind building the Guide HQ in the rectory garden. In 1975 she became a Craft Instructor at St Giles Day Centre, Lancing. Her organising skills were recognised so she was sent on courses and became Officer-in-Charge of a large old people’s home. She was ahead of her time; they had kittens, outings, music, craft and social activities in the same way that care homes are urged to now. She TRIED. Mum took the Guide Promise to “do my duty to God” seriously and was confirmed at St Leonard’s with Sheila and me in 1967. She later became Church Warden and was involved with the (Young) Wives Group. She saw her role as trying to unite the congregation and embarked on the Millennium Kneeler, with everyone sewing a few stitches. She raised funds to restore the church porch and loved showing people round the building. In her last couple of years in Hove, her weekly highlight was to go out in the trishaws with Pedal People. She told her pilots stories of old Hove. As the only LIFE member

C

of the Hove Gardening Club she was appreciated for offthe-cuff talks. She volunteered with Meals on Wheels and her GP’s patient panel. Mum’s principles influenced many: hard work; honesty (“You can’t be HALF-honest”); independence (annoying in her later years); being close to family; loyalty to friends; and enabling others to “do their best”. SHE TRIED. Maureen Knight (née Odom, formerly Silvester) There will be a Service of Celebration for Eileen at St Leonard’s Church later in the year, date to be announced.

Lindsey Tydeman from The Keep archive centre with a sketched plan of an execution from 1795…

WEST HOVE

FROM THE KEEP… EXECUTIONS AT HOVE PARK Hove Park on a fine day in spring or early summer is a nice place to be. But 225 years ago it was the scene of a military execution - and hundreds of soldiers were forced to watch, as diarist Thomas Harison tells us… in the rear of their respective guns. 13

In 1795 Britain was at war with France and in constant expectation of an invasion led by Napoleon Bonaparte. Thousands of soldiers were stationed at various military outposts in the South East and conditions in barracks could be dire. In Blatchington Barracks near Seaford, lack of food drove 500 hungry soldiers into Seaford where they rioted and took supplies from local butchers and traders, as well as stealing 300 sacks of flour from the Tide Mills at Bishopstone. The mutiny was quashed but it frightened the authorities and the Government decided to make an example of the ringleaders, privates Edward Cooke and Henry Parish. On Saturday 13 June, at 6.30 am, hundreds of soldiers from various militias (marked A-K in the plan) took up their places in Goldstone Bottom, a natural small depression in the Downs outside Brighton, roughly about where Hove Park tennis courts are now. Harison tells us that cavalry detachments were stationed on the slight rises around the execution area, to surround the watching soldiers and curb any thoughts of resistance. At L-L was cannon and at mm-MM horses

The two areas marked D-D were the Oxfordshire militia, ‘divided that they might more conveniently see the execution’. This was the militia whose members had mutinied. There was more punishment in store for the Oxfordshire. Not only were they placed closest to the event but a detachment of them had been picked out to shoot Cooke and Parish, and this group was stationed at Q, positioned behind the ranks so the prisoners would not see their comrades until they stepped out at the last moment. At O, six soldiers were brought out first. Three were flogged, two were pardoned and the sixth, ‘being ill, was reserved for another opportunity’. Then, at R, the two prisoners made their appearance, ‘having a guard of both horse and foot’ and were made to kneel on their coffins. The tiny dot to their right was the adjutant, ‘who gave the signals by waving his cane’. Was Thomas Harison sketching his plan as this event took place? He could have been, as he was a civilian Quarter Master Commissary, responsible for provisioning the army, and as a civilian may not have been under military discipline. He called it a ‘remarkable day’ and we know that seeing the execution upset him very much. He wrote that he ‘was struck with such a melancholy that I could not enjoy a thing for a fortnight or more after it’. Thomas Harison’s diary (AMS 7241/1), which contains his plan of the execution and a detailed key alongside, has been digitised and is available to view at The Keep. Regular article about local exercise opportunity by West Hove resident Isobel Muir...

WEST HOVE

WEST HOVE SPORTS…SQUATS Back in January I was keen to add compound movements to my gymming repertoire. These are any exercises that recruit various muscles at once. The most well-known of these is probably the squat. Squatting uses all the following muscles (and more) in just one movement: quads, glutes, inner thigh, hamstrings, abs and sides of trunk, upper back and calves. Having been doing isolated exercises on machines since last September I knew I’d have to start sensibly on the new exercises as I’d be using everything at once and a lot of core strength and balance that just isn’t necessary when using the machines. Serendipitously Rick, my favourite instructor from The Circle, had just begun to work at Underground Gym which meant I could use his expertise to learn how to do the exercises correctly. First I wanted to try some trap bar exercises. This is a heavy hexagonal bar you stand within and can add weights to. As the bar is loose, one must use one’s core and balance throughout to avoid toppling over. Turns out I am the worst sloucher. I need to relax my shoulders (I find relaxing impossible anyway) but instead I keep them tight and slump my core down in an effort to trick myself into thinking I’m relaxed. Rick finally managed to get me to stand up straight with shoulders relaxed so we could

begin. Shrugs cause involuntary Elvis-style lip twitching! Calf raises and straight leg deadlifts came next. Then, the main event. When squatting it is important to have everything in alignment to make sure you are using the correct muscles and not putting undue strain on your knees or any other part. Many people need to raise their heels a little to make sure the range of movement towards the bottom of the squat isn’t compromised. Rick had me place my heels on weight plates to achieve this. Amazingly my form was good from the off and after Rick made a few minor tweaks I was squatting like a pro (sort of). After hitting the wall midway through my last set of 10 reps we called it a day and I felt confident that I could now add all these new exercises to my weekly regime and reap the myriad benefits. Rick is currently giving try-out sessions for £25. I’d highly recommend giving him a go as you may like him just as much as I do! ST HOVE WEST HOVE

News from the council…

COUNCIL TAKES SWIFT ACTION TO PROTECT BIRDS Special ‘swift bricks’ will be incorporated in new developments across Brighton & Hove to help halt the decline of the distinctive birds. Approved by the RSPB, the bird boxes are designed to look like bricks, but feature a small hole where swifts can enter and build their nests. Although known as swift bricks, they can be used by a variety of other birds including sparrows, starlings, blue tits and great tits. At a meeting of the council’s Tourism, Equalities, Communities & Culture Committee in March, members agreed to a new planning condition which will see swift boxes and bee bricks incorporated in the vast majority of new developments in the city. Bee bricks have been required for new build developments since November last year and are incorporated in the external walls of new developments.

A swift brick; photo by John Day

Swifts are urban birds which make their nests in rooftops or in old buildings, after flying over 6,000 miles from Africa in the spring. However, modern building methods, along with the demolition of old buildings, have reduced the swifts’ access to rooftops, resulting in a serious decline in numbers. Twenty years ago there were 150,000 pairs in Britain – now there are fewer than 90,000. The council’s new planning condition will require swift bricks to be incorporated in all new developments that are five metres high and above. There should be a minimum of three, or two bricks per dwelling. The condition will be attached to all planning permissions granted after 1 April. Commercial developments will be required to have a minimum of three boxes, or one per 50sqm of floor space. Ideally, swift bricks should be placed under the eaves in groups of at least three. Councillor Alan Robins, chair of the committee said: “This new initiative has the potential to halt the decline of swifts in the city, while also providing safe nesting places for many other types of small birds.” RSPB conservation officer Jack Thompson said: “This important planning condition for swifts will help provide more opportunities for nesting swifts and urban birds, supporting important sites, and build on the fantastic work being done to save our swifts. This could not have been achieved without the hard work of passionate individuals working together; local volunteers, planners, councillors, ecologists, businesses and residents all striving to give a home for these vulnerable and special birds in Brighton & Hove.” 22

Bloodline wills and care home fees… Can you avoid your house being sold to pay for care home fees? The answer is sometimes yes and sometimes no. If you are a couple (married or not), you can do a lot with your wills to help with this. Solutions for couples. The best solution for a couple who own their own home is to make sure they have the right sort of wills and own the house in the right way. There are two options: 1. Health advice from Nathalie…

HEAL YOUR GUT: BOOST YOUR IMMUNITY In light of current health concerns, there are some easy actions you can take to improve your immunity. Research has shown that healthy gut flora is key in maintaining a healthy immune system. Indeed, the gut contains 70-80% of the body’s immune cells which protect you from external pathogens. A balanced microbiota will promote healthy immune cells, while the presence of pathogenic gut bacteria will eventually cause inflammation and disease. The following tips will help you to strengthen your immunity: Ban chemicals. Chemicals in food and the environment weaken the gut lining and destroy good bacteria, which all impacts your immunity. Therefore, focus on organic foods and pure, filtered water. Reduce chemicals in your home. Ditch plastics and chemical and ‘anti-bacterial’ cleaning products where possible. Eat organic, raw pre and pro-biotic foods that promote beneficial gut bacteria: kefir, kombucha, raw sauerkraut, kimchi, natto, plain live full-fat organic yogurt to name a few. Eat more plant-fibre: the fermentation of fibre by gut bacteria has been found to reduce inflammation and improve immunity in recent studies.

Drink pure, filtered water to maintain healthy hydration and help flush toxins and chemicals out of your body. Micronutrients such as vitamin C, A, E, B6, B12, folic acid, iron, magnesium and calcium will help boost immunity. Reduce stress: Stress promotes inflammation and weakens gut bacteria! As always, do what feels right for your body. Nathalie x Nathalie Sansonetti, Health & Nutrition Coach Want some help with your immunity, energy and gut health? News from Off The Fence about their Hygiene for All crowdfunding project…

WEST HOVE

HYGIENE FOR ALL... For over 20 years Off the Fence has worked in the community to alleviate the experience of homelessness, providing food, clothing, washing facilities and laundry facilities. The charity also takes responsibility for signposting rough sleepers and the homeless towards places of refuge, essential services and entitled assistance – and provides a postal address for those who need health treatment, to open a bank account or to claim benefits. The Portland Road-based Christian charity is committed to providing mobile hygiene, shower and laundry vans for the most vulnerable and marginalised in the community. With the help of the Aviva Community Fund the charity is seeking to raise £1,500 via the Aviva crowdfunding platform. In 2018/2019 Hygiene For All was set up to address the acute lack of hygiene facilities in the city – leading to conditions such as skin problems, impaired movement, decayed teeth, foot pain and even seizures. The charity believes that if treated early enough all these can be prevented. The Laundry Van, Shower Van and Hygiene Van are the answer to this problem but the charity needs ongoing financial help to allow clients to feel better, look better and be part of the community once again. Combined with the Hygiene For All Day Centre and

Evening Outreach, Hygiene For All is already playing a significant role in transforming the lives of the vulnerable in Brighton & Hove. With the help of crowdfunding, the charity will make a difference to the most disadvantaged in the most practical way possible. Crowdfunding contributions can be made online at: avivacommunityfund.co.uk/ hygiene-for-all, where you can also see a video showing the work of the hygiene vans. News of a council consultation…

WOULD YOU ADOPT A TREE? Residents are being asked if they would like to adopt a tree or possibly become trained tree wardens. The ideas are included in a council consultation as part of a strategy to save and develop the city’s historic tree population. City Parks, the council’s open spaces team, also want your views on planting more trees, off-street parking, dropped kerbs and tackling tree-destroying infections. WEST HOVE

Local history from Rachel Bridgeman…

ROLL UP! ROLL UP! From the 1860s until the Great War, children in this area would be transported to a magic world by the thrill of a special spectacle. Engines, pulling up to 70 trucks, would puff into West Brighton Station (aka Hove Station), and down would descend a pageant of jaw-dropping proportions – a troupe of up to 1,200 circus folk together with a menagerie of wild and wonderful beasts.

31

A circus procession in Sackville Road, 1893; © the Regency Society’s James Gray Collection

Children would flock down to watch the big top being pitched – regular sites were Hove Meadow (Aymer Road area) and Wish Meadow (Wish Park). For decades they would hold joyful memories of helping the circus folk set up camp and, if they couldn’t afford a ticket, they could walk around and see the animals for free. By midday, the whole troupe would be dressed and ready for the magnificent procession around the town. And what a parade! The Ring Master would lead a cavalcade of dazzling and dangerous acts from across the globe – dozens of tumbling clowns; exquisitely gilded vans drawn by teams of horses; cages of lions, tigers, leopards, panthers and bears; caravans of camels; chariots drawn by zebras; a troupe of 20 performing elephants; Cinderella’s coach; Wild West floats; acrobats, contortionists and jugglers. Meanwhile, the school authorities grumbled about the empty desks as the classroom proved unable to compete with the dazzling display; some schools, resigned to the inevitable, just permitted the children a holiday whenever the circus rolled up. Children desperately worked odd jobs to afford a ticket and recall memories of lying in bed wriggling in anticipation as they heard

the “BOOM” of the man being shot out of the cannon. When Sanger’s Circus visited in 1915, it boasted the largest elephants in England. Within a year, these magnificent beasts would be ploughing English fields to fill in for the farm horses which had been sent off to the Western Front. To learn more about the history of Hove, join a guided historical walking tour led by a local historian. Hove Actually Walking Tours are fun, informative and best suited to the incurably curious. Whether it’s your first visit or you have lived here your whole life, the tours are a great way to discover and uncover the area. To receive the programme of walks, email hoveactuallywalks@gmail.com. News from Wish ward councillor Robert Nemeth…

COUNCILLOR NEWS… Promoting an uplifting message is the priority for our piece this month – so Cllr Garry Peltzer Dunn and I are keen to draw attention to three positive stories that should mean a lot to the community. First, our campaign for trees in Wish Ward is yielding some excellent results already. Replacement trees are now in the pavement outside Wish Park Surgery on Portland Road following destruction by motorists of the originals. A survey of the pavements on and around School Road is soon to take place. £25,000 has now been set aside for the wildlife corner in Stoneham Park. It’s slower than we would like but it’s now a question of when rather than if. We are keen to work with as many residents as possible on this and are now in the process of building a core team of tree enthusiasts with a view to soon undertaking a survey of the whole ward to find out just how many trees our area could realistically support. Please get in touch if you would like to join the core group. Two projects that are getting financial backing from Garry and me, through our allocated ward budgets, are trees for Glebe Villas and a hedge for the schools on Portland Road. Trees on Glebe make absolute sense – it’s the only road in the area without them. And a hedge to protect kids in the school playgrounds from pollution is an absolute priority. We will be putting £4,000 into these projects and, working closely with residents, have raised significant further sums. Outside the schools, road safety at school drop-off and collection times remains a concern so we have drawn up a series of demands for the Council; some of which are already happening such as scheduled traffic warden patrols. I’ve been attending on numerous mornings myself as well.

We are also keen to see improved markings including on the two School Road crossing points; a review of the road layout generally; provision of yellow A-boards; legal guidance and practical advice for safety volunteers; and various other related issues. Finally, it may well be that the situation has moved on significantly since writing this piece, but we urge everybody to look out for any vulnerable neighbours during what will be a testing spring period. If anybody needs to run ideas for community action past us, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. Cllr Robert Nemeth Robert.Nemeth@brighton-hove.gov.uk
