LOCAL COUNCILLOR...

The second in a series of interviews with all the local councillors in West Hove…
MEET WESTBOURNE COUNCILLOR TOM BEWICK Tom was elected in May as a Labour councillor for Westbourne ward and is Chair of the council’s Children, Young People and Skills Committee. Do you live in the West Hove area? Yes, I live in Pembroke Gardens, very close to the Hove Museum – the heart of my ward. Tell us a bit about your background… I moved to the city in 2007 when my children started to arrive. For a while, I commuted up to London, where I was chief executive of a national charity helping young people access training and apprenticeships. I grew up in foster care and left school initially with no qualifications. I’m really passionate about education and the fact skills can help transform lives. After night school, I went to university and I’ve been lucky to work with some amazing people who have given me a career break, including Tony Hall, the director general of the BBC. In the last decade I’ve set up several successful organisations. I’ve worked as an adviser in education for several international bodies like the World Bank and various governments, including five visits to Afghanistan.
PREMIER WINDOWS
Doors and Conservatories
Why did you want to become a councillor? I was getting really frustrated with the way the Greens were running the city. It made me realise just how important it is for politicians to be competent at running things and how much residents want to see a council focussed on getting the basics right. What do you hope to achieve in the area? I’m really proud of my local community. But families are feeling the pressure on household budgets and school places. I think it is critical that the council transforms the way it delivers services while keeping council tax increases to a minimum. My big passion is ensuring Ofsted rates every school in the city good or outstanding and that we eliminate long-term youth unemployment. What are your interests outside politics? I love my partner and three children, English history, travelling and cricket. If I ever went on Mastermind, my specialist subject would be the life and times of King Richard I, aka Coeur de Lion.

BEACH COTTAGES, KINGSWAY These formerly stood to the south of Kingsway, on the site of the present King Alfred Leisure Centre. They were originally occupied by fishermen. When this photograph was taken, in 1908, all seven cottages were still standing, but soon afterwards Kingsway was widened on its south side and numbers 4-7 were removed. The other three cottages, those nearest to the sea, lingered on until 1928, when the site was finally cleared, though it was not until many years later that the King Alfred was built. This view shows the backs of the cottages, with their vegetable gardens.Â

LOCAL PERSON... Joe Higgins is the Police Community Support Officer for the Wish area and we asked him about his work.
WISH LOCAL PCSO – JOE HIGGINS How long have you been a PCSO? I began working for Sussex Police in July last year, and have been in neighbourhood policing since September 2014. What is the best part of your job? The best part of working for Sussex Police is working on resolving issues within the community that are having a detrimental effect to residents, whether it be a person or family who are perpetrators for anti-social behaviour or someone who is suffering from severe mental health issues who is, unknowingly, causing major tension within their community. Utilising other agencies, confronting individuals about their behaviour and maintaining a good relationship with victims of crime or anti-social behaviour whilst a problem-solving file is being worked on is the bread and butter of policing that I relish; of course the best part is the finalisation of a matter that has been resolved and updating the victim(s). What are the challenges that you face? The challenges that I, and all police officers around the UK, face is the ever-changing workspace. Sussex Police as a force are undergoing a lot of changes that will change the way everyone works; we are currently trialling a few different ways of working within neighbourhood policing which, at present, have been working well. Although the changes within the force have been swift and challenging we will always make sure that public service is at the top of our agenda. What are your interests outside work? When I’m not out on the beat I like to go to the gym; I also enjoy hiking around some of Sussex’s many areas of natural beauty. Recently, I have also taken up martial arts. How can we help you in your work? • You can help me and my colleagues by reporting crime that is occurring in your area. If you feel that by reporting crime there will be repercussions, Crimestoppers has the facility to report crime anonymously on 0800 555 111; you can also report crime anonymously on their website.
• Most of the time, there is a slight issue with a few people not knowing what, or how to report incidents like anti-social behaviour. We are currently trialling a service called Ewatch which is a quarterly newsletter set up by local PCSOs which has some useful contacts. If you are interested in receiving this, please email me on the address below. How can we contact you (and your Westbourne colleague)? I can be contacted on: Joe.Higgins@sussex.pnn.police.uk which is my work email. My colleague, Beth Edge, who is the local PCSO for Westbourne, can be contacted on: Bethany.Edge@sussex.pnn.police.uk . If you require anything from crime prevention advice for your business or residence, wish to receive quarterly issues of Ewatch or wish just to have some advice as to what is going on in your area please send us an email, we are happy to help. I stress that incidents cannot be reported via our email addresses. All incidents (whether anti-social behaviour or a crime) need to be reported by calling up 101 for our non-emergency number, 999, or you can report incidents online by visiting the Sussex Police website. We will then pick up the reports and handle the matter. All matters are handled this way because we are not always in the office and may be on annual leave, so no-one would be aware of any issues until we return.

Here is our monthly gardening feature written by Nareesa Sulaiman, a local garden designer...
In the garden... AUGUST 2015 Ever come across a plant that you really like the look of but don’t know what it is? I do, all the time! I used to spend ages trawling through plant catalogues and books but now, using the internet, there is a good chance that my mystery plant will be identified... It is helpful to take a photograph of the plant to help to remember what it looks like. If that is not possible, try to note characteristics such as flower colour and shape, leaf shape and size, plant height. When you find time to conduct your research, review what you know about the plant. If the plant was flowering, what colour was the flower? Try putting eg ‘blue flower July’ into an internet search engine and then scrolling through the images to see if you recognise the plant. If you can be more specific, eg ‘blue flower July hairy leaves’, that will also help to narrow the search. If the plant looks a bit like other plants that you know, try a ‘-like‘ search, eg lily-like. You will get an amazing array of plant pictures and hopefully you will be able to isolate your plant that way. If you noticed what type of plant it was, eg shrub/climber, or you took note of the plant location, eg sunny/
Stipa gigantea
shady, then try searching on nursery websites. Crocus has an excellent website that allows you to enter a wide range of plant characteristics, which will hopefully help to track down your unknown plant. There are a few apps for the technophiles amongst you that may help. I have been using Tree ID (free) for a couple of years and that has proven very helpful for identifying lesser known native trees. PlantSnapp is a relatively new app on the market which allows you to upload your plant photo. You are then sent information with the identity of your mystery plant as well as where you can buy it locally. Feature plant for August Stipa gigantea I have seen this wonderful grass in several front gardens around West Hove. The large airy flower heads move in the breeze and look great towering above other coastal plants. Great places to visit I am hoping to visit Malthouse Farm in Hassocks which is open on Sunday 16th August as part of the National Gardens Scheme, www.ngs.org.uk. I haven’t been there before so I’m looking forward to getting some new ideas. Happy gardening! Nareesa

LOCAL GROUP... Here is the regular update from the Kingsway & West Hove Residents’ Association…
ALL things local from kawhra At KAWHRA’s meeting in June, we discussed several topics of interest to people throughout West Hove. Birds – Feathered Friends or Feathered Fiends? John Butler, “The Birdman of Sussex”, gave an illuminating talk. In Hove there is a problem with herring gulls, which are protected by law, as is every bird in this country. It is sometimes possible to obtain a licence to destroy eggs and nests, but only under certain circumstances. The herring gull is on the red endangered species list, but we are in a hot spot. We have taken away their habitat, the cliffs, and the gulls have now realised that nesting on a building is safer. St Leonard’s Church Rev Stephen Terry told us that two meetings of the Diocesan Mission & Pastoral Committee have proposed to close St Leonard’s as a place of worship. They wish to forward the papers to the Church Commissioners, but they are currently on the Bishop of Chichester’s desk. The Commissioners’ Committee will consider the application, then a consultation will take place. Rev Terry said that St Leonard’s is not well attended and St Philip’s is. His view is that to maintain two places of worship in the Parish of Aldrington is no longer sustainable. St Leonard’s will be retained for church purposes and he is positive that it will be made available to local community groups. Jenny Watts of “Saving St Leonard’s” said that they would like to see part of it used for worship and part for the local community, and they have almost completed their business plan. Boundary Road Wish Councillor Robert Nemeth said that he and Cllr Garry Peltzer Dunn would like to improve Boundary Road, which gets forgotten because the shops find it hard to mobilise, due to different names for the road and different councillors. If you have any ideas about
this, let them know. (garry.peltzerdunn@brighton-hove. gov.uk / robert.nemeth@brighton-hove.gov.uk). Parking Streets to the west of Saxon Road are suffering from parking displacement from the Wish Park area which got an extension of a light touch scheme earlier this year. The overwhelming majority of residents at the meeting were in favour of another formal consultation, to include the light touch option, which was not included in the council’s previous consultation. If the council agrees, we would hold a further meeting just about parking. Please note KAWHRA covers the area between Boundary Road, New Church Road, Roman Road and Kingsway, but anyone is welcome at our meetings. If you would like to join our emailing list, please contact us at kawhra@gmail.com.

Another article written by local resident and sports fanatic Isobel Muir...
PARKRUN AT HOVE PROMENADE I have written about parkrun before and extolled its virtues and general brilliance. A free, timed 5k run every Saturday at 9am suitable for everyone, from experienced runners to those taking their first steps. We are very lucky as there are already two parkruns in Brighton and Hove, one in Hove Park and one in Preston Park (also junior parkrun [2k] on Sunday mornings). On the 11th of July it was the turn of Hove Prom to get in on the action. This is the closest one to me so it seemed churlish of me not to go along and have a go on its first outing. The set-up is exactly the same as parkruns the world over. Remember barcode. Turn up. Run. Get barcode scanned. Done. The start line is just by the café on Hove Lawns. (There is a beach hut where you can stash your bag.) Setting off in a westerly direction, you turn just before the King Alfred and run all the way back to the Peace Statue where you turn again and run back to the King Alfred turn, back to the Peace Statue, then back to the finish which is the back of the start. Luckily we had a sunny day with only a normal strength wind, which was actually quite welcome as it was very hot when running back towards the Peace Statue. After a pre-run briefing, all 294 of us set off. Due to the nature of the course you are able to see all the runners ahead and behind you along the straights which is good for waving and high-fiving and also for any spectators. The course is perfect for pushchairs and wheelchairs and there were both of these in attendance for this inaugural run. It is excellent to see so many people out exercising early on a Saturday morning. Also it was good to hear that numbers at Hove Park and Preston Park remained stable, showing that running as a whole is just getting bigger and bigger. Over 1,000 parkrunners in Brighton & Hove alone.

parkrun day. You don’t even need to run to get involved as the whole thing operates via volunteers, so why not go along to help? You’ll earn a nice, free, purple t-shirt for 25 volunteers in case you need further motivation. For all the information about parkrun please look at their website, or search “Hove Promenade parkrun” for specific details of this new seafront run. Get involved! For more details about my life in exercise please visit my blog “IMFitHove”. Thanks. Happy exercising! isobelmuir@hotmail.com
As I have said before I can’t go on enough about how good parkrun is as a concept. You find so many friends there, and after your first run you’ll be hooked and discover there’s no such thing as Saturday any more, just

LOCAL ATTRACTION.. Here we bring you some of the background behind local landmark West Blatchington Windmill...
WEST BLATCHINGTON WINDMILL Built circa 1823 on a tall, pre-existing flint and brick tower, West Blatchington Windmill in Holmes Avenue, Hove, is one of England’s most unusual and attractive “smock” mills. Six-sided instead of the conventional eight, much of the original machinery remains intact, augmented by a fascinating collection of other milling and agricultural artefacts and photographs. Beautifully depicted in a painting by John Constable on 5th November 1825, she provided the flour and animal feeds for Court Farm, which was leased from the Abergavenny Estates. Following a disastrous storm, she ceased work in 1897 and along with adjacent land was purchased by Hove Corporation in 1937. The elm tree lined track, used for decades by horse-pulled carts laden with cereal crops to be threshed and ground, was replaced by tarmac as Holmes Avenue was extended northwards, leaving the mill isolated on a central island as she is seen today. Over the past 37 years, in conjunction with the council, volunteers from the Friends of the Mill group have lovingly restored the interior of the building to its

former glory and, with six floors open to view, this has proved to be a popular visitor attraction for young and old alike on Sunday and Bank Holiday afternoons from 2.30-5.00pm, from May to September inclusive. The mill is currently undergoing remedial works and repainting and is clad in scaffolding but is open on Sundays as usual. Refreshments are available in the north barn (rebuilt in 1997 and available to hire) and there is a wide selection of souvenirs for sale. Currently entrance charges are £2 for adults and £1 for children. For more information www.sussexmillsgroup.org.uk/blatchington.htm

An easy way to remember the basic steps to manage strains and sprains…
FOCUS ON PHYSIOTHERAPY
IMMEDIATE TREATMENT - ‘PRICE’ People often phone me after injuries like a sprained ankle, twisted knee or jarred elbow. Much of the advice I give before I see a patient is based on the mnemonic PRICE: Protect, Rest, Ice, Compress and Elevate. Protect the injury. This might involve a brace, a crutch, a sling or taping the area. This avoids undue stress and so allows the healing process to start. Rest the injury. Simply not moving the injured limb lessens blood flow which leads to reduced swelling and stress for the injury. Ice the injury. Just a bag of frozen peas wrapped in a damp towel usually helps, as cold reduces tissue temperature which constricts the blood vessels, which in turn limits bleeding, swelling, bruising and pain. Compress the injury. Carefully applied compression can help prevent swelling and so reduce the formation of scar tissue, leading to a quicker recovery. Elevate the injury. This lowers the blood pressure in the limb which limits bleeding and aids fluid drainage, both of which will help reduce swelling. Whatever the injury, applying PRICE should both reduce recovery time and make the recovery less painful. Local NEWS... There is a lot going on in West Hove including bee keeping...
DON’T WORRY – BEE HONEY! Bees are such fascinating insects. There are about 25 species of bumblebee found in England, and many types of solitary bee, but only one type of honey bee – Apis mellifera. All of these different types of bee can be seen in our gardens and if you look closely you will see the differences. Some nest in old wood or masonry or in underground burrows. In a honey bee colony there can be up to 50,000 workers (all females), about 300 drones (males) and just one queen. The queen is an egg-laying machine and at the same time emits a pheromone which calms the workers, making them content and happy. Some say that the drones also have a calming influence on the colony, but their only true vocation is to mate with a virgin queen, and then die. A short but happy life! A lot of people think that the queen is the boss, but it is the workers who make the decisions in the hive and do all the work of building wax comb, and collecting nectar, pollen and water. They also feed the larvae and keep the queen warm through the cold winter. They communicate with each other by touching feelers, grooming, and doing the waggle dance to tell others where the best food and water is.
Hove Beach Croquet Club is a relaxed, informal, friendly club for anyone who would like to watch, learn or play croquet. Visitors are welcome, children are welcome, there is a great cafe and a bar. We have regular barbeques and there are plenty of deckchairs. Opening Times At weekends in good weather the pitches will be set up by 12 noon. We could be playing until sundown. On weekdays, ask in the café at the Bowling Club. www.hovebeachcroquetclub.co.uk Facebook: Hove Beach Croquet Club Twitter: @hovecroquet
Swarming is their natural way of increase and most hives will do this each year around May, and what they do is they build a special long cell about the size of a small thimble which the queen will lay a normal egg into, but they will feed that larva royal jelly for the whole of its time, then when it is capped over, it will develop into a queen, hatching out in 16 days. The day before it hatches out, about half of the colony will take the old queen out and swarm into a nearby tree, looking for a new home. When the bees are in a swarm they are not aggressive and I’ve caught lots of swarms in different places. The traditional one is about the size of a rugby ball in a tree, but they don’t always conform to this ideal. My hives are at the Secret Garden where I will be most Wednesdays between 11 and 2 when you are welcome to visit, see the bees and do some gardening jobs. Details of honey sales can be found on my website, where there is a Contacts page. https://dontworrybeehoney.wordpress.com/

LOCAL NEWS... Yet more interesting local activities...
UNBARRED BREWERY WEST HOVE’S MICRO-BREWERY I’ve lived in Hove most of my life and have settled in Bolsover Road. I started home brewing a few years ago and jumped straight into all-grain brewing and creating my own recipes. The brewing bug took over and became my passion. After passing the home brew around at different clubs and getting great feedback from professional brewers, I started to consider going professional. After a lot of hard work and meetings with the council, I managed to register the brewery I built in my garden. I entered my first cask to the CAMRA Sussex Beer Festival 2015 and have just been told I’ve won the Bev Robbins Award (voted best Sussex-brewed beer) for my flagship beer “Benchmark”. It’s an incredible achievement as the last winners were Harveys. “Benchmark” is a hop-forward session IPA (India pale ale) with the character of a double IPA. I’m now trying to keep up with demand, as the support has been incredible. The brewery has just been doubled in size and will be soon run at its maximum output.
I’ve always loved the focus on bringing people together for good food and drink and this is reflected in the brewery. I will be releasing collaboration brews with other brewers and am working with local shops and food producers to make beers using local ingredients. I love the hop forward IPA’s but there is a shortage of US and New World hops. The key now is to produce beers on a more sustainable approach using local ingredients where possible and hops according to their availability. This makes it more fun for me as a brewer as I can make lots of small batches of limited edition beers. All available at Quaff in Portland Road. Follow me on social media for upcoming “Meet the Brewer” evenings and food and beer pairing events. Jordan Mower www.unbarredbrewery.com

LOCAL BUSINESS... If you are after bathrooms or tiles then you can’t go far wrong than visit Eurotiles & Bathrooms...
A MUST VISIT VENUE FOR YOUR NEW TILES AND BATHROOM If you’re revamping your bathroom or need tiles for your kitchen or conservatory floor, look no further: Eurotiles & Bathrooms is the one place that you ought to visit. There is a huge selection of tiles ranging in style from large size porcelain ones which are perfect for a modern bathroom or for kitchen, lounge and even patio floors, through mosaics to more traditional 10 x 10cm for kitchens and marble and stone effects for bathrooms. Wood effect tiles are very popular at the moment as the latest technology means that they are virtually indistinguishable from the real thing and they can be used in areas that are prone to damp where real wood would not be suitable, and the showroom has lots of choice of different styles and colours of wood. It is the exclusive stockist of Ca’ Pietra in Sussex giving you access to some fabulous natural stone tiles. There is also a full range of bathroom products on display including furniture, sanitary ware, showers, taps and accessories such as mirrors and heated towel rails.
Ege sanitary ware, which comes with a 10-year warranty, is exclusive to Eurotiles & Bathrooms in the UK and they have other stylish brands such as Burlington and Pura Bathrooms. Most of the range is in stock so you don’t need to plan weeks in advance, you can just come in, choose your products and take them away, or arrange for free local delivery. The Brighton showroom is based on the Freshfields Business Park, near to Screwfix and Benchmarx Kitchens.
