However, such is the British weather that who knows what it will be like tomorrow and by the time you read this the chances of it still being this glorious are about the same as Leicester winning the Premiership again! Hmmm...wait a moment - much more unlikely than that! August is a funny month in the local magazine world with lots of people opting out due to holidays but even so we have done our best to bring you some kind of a publication for your enjoyment. Hope you find some 3 things useful / interesting. Enjoy the weather...whatever it is!!

WEST HOVE

WART How long have you lived in West Hove? I lived in Peacehaven but returned to London for a couple of years. I’ve been back since November 2015 and love it.

proaching trips to the Labour Party Conference, the US presidential elections and Valencia. I love to meet people and hear their real story.

What do you most like about the area? It’s quiet, people are friendly, feels like a community and you often bump into someone you’ve met somewhere in town. The sea and the space give a feeling of light. At night you can see moonlight and the stars. The stuff poems are made of. I’ve joined some groups like the Brighton Debating Society, The Fabians, started playing tennis, swimming and found some great coffee, cake and chill out places, like The Hive. 5

It’s a collection of poems I’ve written since boyhood. They cover many aspects of life - political and follow my inspiration at the time. It’s my ideas, design and self-published. That gives me a feeling of control and achievement. It’s the start of a new phase in my life – expressing myself, being creative and making my dreams glow.

What is your background? Youth and community work initially. I am a freelance conflict resolution trainer, mainly for NHS staff. Lovely work - varied, interesting and I meet great people. I am also developing projects that I am passionate about such as Speak up...Be listened to!! A leaflet on how to complain. And the Big Ask guidelines to help people hold organisations such as councils accountable. They are on my website. I am starting podcasts and a blog from my previous trips like Cuba. In addition, my ap-

What sort of photographs do you take? I love angles, shapes, shades of things especially scenery, buildings and structures. Night shots too. I take shots of anything but people. The photos are from the UK, USA, Kenya and Tanzania. Some photos are linked to the poems. I use a film camera as well as digital. “Sikhona, Sawubona” by Keith Stewart is published by Keith Stewart -www.keithstewart.co.uk for more information. There’s a lot going on down at Hove Lagoon...

NEW ARTWORK AT HOVE LAGOON After years of neglect, the repainting of Hove Lagoon’s infamous mural wall is now well underway.

9

It has taken me and Garry well over a year to raise cash, talk to residents, and assemble a team of some of the country’s top graffiti artists including Aroe who has painted many of Brighton & Hove’s most famous pieces. It was some time ago but, if my memory serves me correctly, the wall was last painted by local children. For at least a decade, it has been covered with large grey squares where council workers have painted over

scrawled tags. I see it as a metaphor for the way in which Hove generally is forgotten by Brighton & Hove City Council. It is quite simply an embarrassment. The new artwork forms part of a much larger plan to improve the Lagoon which started with the formation of the Friends of Hove Lagoon two months ago. Other projects will include adult exercise equipment, landscaping, planting and hopefully an annual lighting of the seafront beacon. The wall itself is incredibly long. Two thirds of it will simply feature the words ‘Hove Lagoon’ as a proud announcement of our town’s premier seafront attraction. Everybody will relate to this – residents, visitors and traders alike. The remaining third – the section within the skateboard park – will feature a series of popular skate-related motifs from across the last few decades including PowellPeralta’s iconic Bones Brigade logo. It will no doubt raise eyebrows but it has serious artistic integrity and will mean a lot to the skaters – a forgotten group that needs to be involved in the running of Hove Lagoon if it is to be clean, safe and friendly. The reaction so far has been phenomenal. I must have received over a hundred messages already from residents who are delighted that something is finally happening. Visitors have been coming from far and wide to photograph our area’s artwork. Can you believe it? Mums have been posing next to it with the youngest of children. Huge credit has to go Aroe and his friends but also to Danny Stockland and Norman Cook from the Big Beach Café for pushing for improvements; not least for new kids’ play equipment (which has again been neglected by BHCC). I am proud that we live in such a positive area where people can get together to get things done – without spending a single penny of public money. Join a local food community...

A NEW WAY TO BUY LOCAL FOOD AT THE BIG BEACH CAFÉ

11

The Food Assembly, a method of buying and selling food which supports local producers and bypasses supermarkets, is coming to The Big Beach Café at Hove Lagoon, launching on 30th July. The new concept in selling local food directly to local people may replace part of your weekly family shop in a healthier and more community-driven way. Every week Food Assembly customers can order food online from local food producers before picking it up at The Big Beach Café – owned by DJ Norman Cook aka Fatboy Slim.

Interior & Exterior Decorators Call Alan for full free quote 07796 094760 30 years experience

By ordering online, food producers know exactly how much to bring so there is no food waste their end. All the food comes from within the average distance of 28 miles. The Food Assembly is about making a real local food community, with the ease and support of technology to make it happen. Brighton & Hove’s Food Assembly organiser, Sophia Harvey, decided that its vision fitted her view of how we should be eating and buying produce. “Having a local Food Assembly offers us the opportunity to engage with the people producing our food, to really know what we’re eating,” explains Sophia. Dan Stockland, who runs the Big Beach Café, is delighted with this new way of buying local food. A cook to the stars, he’s excited about how it will add to his community. “We really liked the idea of the Food Assembly as it just adds even further to what we are doing with the café’s community. I’m excited to work with local produce and to support our food producers; we’re all about local here,” he says. Weekly shoppers choose from unique local products, such as artisan bread from Infinity Foods Bakery; woodland reared pork from Lancing College Estate; and yummy honey from Brambletye Farm. Not to forget multi award-winning cheese from High Weald Dairy. So what are you waiting for? The Hove Food Assembly online is now open so you can sign up, become a member (for free with no commitment), and fill your basket with fresh food. The first market launches on 30th July and they will be at the Big Beach Café (10.30am12.30pm) every Saturday after that. If you’re a food producer and are interested in joining the Hove Food Assembly or the soon to be launched Brighton Food Assembly (The Open Market, September 2016) we’d love to hear from you. You can contact: brightonhovefoodie@gmail.com. If you’re a venue like the Big Beach Café, or care about local food like Sophia, follow in their footsteps and start your own local food community! You can contact: support@foodassembly.com, and check out: www.foodassembly.com.

Here is our monthly gardening feature written by Nareesa Sulaiman, a local garden designer...

WEST HOVE

IN THE GARDEN... AUGUST 2016 With all the sun and rain that we’ve had, the gardens around West Hove are looking lush so there’s lots to keep you busy this month... Cut back any plants that have finished flowering to a more manageable height and spread. This is also a good month to cut back lavenders to avoid them becoming too leggy. Remove 2.5cm all over the plant to encourage a flush of new growth which will then have time to harden off before winter sets in. Add plant supports to plants that are flopping over. Old fashioned canes and string work well but there are also some very attractive commercial supports available. I like the simple arcs in rusted metal 13 (www.plantsupports.co.uk). Work around plants to clear weeds by pulling up from the roots. Small weeds can be left to dry out on the soil surface but I prefer to completely remove them and put them in the compost bin or garden waste bag. Water plants during dry periods. Use a watering can to water as close to the base of the plant as possible, enabling roots to take up water. Avoid watering the leaves as, on hot days, this may cause the plant to be damaged. Slugs and snails have been a big problem in this change-

Hydrangea paniculata

able weather. Add bird- and hedgehog-friendly slug pellets around any young herbaceous plants or around vegetable crops. I use Growing Success as it is approved for organic gardening. Copper bands are also a good deterrent. Using nematodes is another way to control the problem. Bought at the garden centre and watered in, nematodes are microscopic worms that infect and kill young slugs, therefore considerably reducing the number in the garden. This is a good time to take soft cuttings from plants if you would like to increase your stock of certain plants in the garden. Plants such as Geraniums, Penstemon, Gaura and Fuchsias are good for taking cuttings. Remove lower leaves, dip into rooting powder (optional) and pot up in potting compost. Feature plant for August Hydrangea paniculata ‘Limelight’ After many years being out of favour, hydrangeas have gained popularity in recent years. The large, long-lasting flower heads start off lime green and then fade to cream and eventually turn pinky brown in autumn. Great places to visit Sussex Prairie Garden, near Henfield, West Sussex, BN5 9AT. I recommend this garden every year but it is such a beautiful garden and right on our doorstep. If you want to see an amazing perennial garden, look no further. Happy gardening! Nareesa

HOME FITNESS Reasonably recently I bought a smart TV (I always like to be at least five years behind the times). Even more recently I discovered I can play YouTube videos off my iPad through said television.

15

I have also discovered I have no core strength. Well it wasn’t really a discovery because I knew it, but I thought now was the time to do something about it, what with the plethora of online videos for anything you could care to want to do. The core is important in everything as it

• Wills, Probate, Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPA), Deputyships • Family Law (Divorce, Dissolution, Pre-Nups, Financial disputes, Children matters) • Residential Conveyancing and Commercial Conveyancing, shop & lease sales • Personal injury - all forms of accident claims • Defending DWP Benefit Fraud investigations, Interviews under caution & Prosecutions • Criminal and Road Traffic Defence advice • Civil litigation / Debt recovery

helps you not to slouch and can tone your waistline as the stronger the muscles the more the fat is held in place, like an internal, natural pair of shaping underwear. In my case it has made a massive and immediate improvement in the sciatica that has plagued me for over three years. As I wanted core exercises specifically for runners I searched “core exercises for runners” on YouTube and was assailed by thousands and thousands of choices. I had been told 10 minutes of core a week was fine so I looked for videos that were around that length. I had no desire to do more than the minimum! Luckily the first video I went for turned out to be excellent. About 12 minutes overall so a good solid 10 minutes of actual exercises. As I hadn’t done any core-specific exercises for flipping ages I only managed a few seconds on and off of all the exercises. A couple I was ok at but generally I was even worse than I suspected. However the man I had lucked upon was excellent. His name is Zachary Fiorido. Really happy and engaging and motivating. In no time at all I had finished the session. Or rather the session had finished and I’d done about an eighth of it. Fired with enthusiasm I looked through the rest of his videos. He has loads, for all parts of the body, and all different styles so you can find one that suits you. I’m sure he’s not for everyone and even I was dubious of his jolly, upbeat Americanness, but I really like him so maybe have a look. If you don’t get on with his style you have the entire rest of the Internet to find someone that does suit you. Happy browsing! WILD GYM IN WISH PARK This outdoor gym equipment arrived in Wish Park a few weeks ago and can be used by anyone of any age. It was paid for by the Friends of Wish Park, with help from the council and Southern Land Services, a local landscaping company. The money raised by the Friends of Wish Park came from events like last month’s WishFest. The equipment was built by Russell Pountney, a local carpenter, and Park Ranger Paul 19 Gorringe, who sourced the wood from Stanmer woods as part of a coppicing programme.

HOVE STATION FORUM NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN UPDATE The preparation of the Neighbourhood Development Plan has gathered momentum in recent months. We exhibited our draft proposals at our 5th Have Your Say Day in July. It was agreed that we need to have informal workshops on traffic and parking and to develop the proposals for the area west of Sackville Road. These will build on the work of our Stoneham Neighbourhood Planning Group. High on the agenda will be the redevelopment of the School Road area which has recently started. The regeneration of the Hove Station Quarter has begun with the demolition of the derelict factory on the corner of Newtown Road and Goldstone Lane to make way for Hyde’s construction of 65 new homes. Under pressure

from our petition and objections from the landowner the council have withdrawn their proposal to use the former Coal Yard site for waste management. This paves the way for the construction of 600-700 homes on the combined sites of the Sackville Trading Estate and the Coal Yard. Mountpark Properties will present their project at our Autumn Have Your Say Day. Details will be on our website: www.hovestationforum.co.uk

Any of these Brownies look familiar?...

WHERE ARE THEY NOW? This photo from September 1974 shows Brownies from St Philip’s Church at a ceremony in the new Hove Town Hall (opened on 5 March that year), when their Brown Owl, Sheila Odom (now Chapman), received a gold Duke of Edinburgh award. News of possible action regarding the storing of trailers on the roadside...

WEST HOVE

MOVE TO STOP TRAILERS BEING STORED ON STREETS Caravans, trailers and other engineless vehicles left stored on roads or pavements in Brighton & Hove could be removed under a new council policy. Hotspots include Kingsway. Councillors approved the change at the end of June, in an attempt to tidy the streets and free up parking spaces. It would entail the council invoking already-available powers under the Highways Act 1980. In a survey 82 per cent of respondents said they support action being taken. So-called non-motorised vehicles or NMVs are seen as an increasing problem. Since 2012 the council 23 has dealt with over 400 reports. Historically the council has only ever removed NMVs using refuse disposal powers, but this requires them to have been abandoned. Lived-in vehicles are tackled by the council’s travellers team. Until now there has been no policy on vehicles which are neither abandoned nor lived in. However, Section 143 of the Highways Act allows removal of structures from the highway – regardless of whether they are owned or abandoned. Legislation

requires the council to issue a notice. After a month the vehicle can be removed and costs can be recovered from any identified owner. Implementing the policy would cost an estimated £5,000 to £10,000 a year. Costs would be reduced where possible by charging owners for the return of trailers or by selling them. Chair of the Environment Committee Cllr Gill Mitchell said: “It’s annoying for residents who have to buy parking permits and road tax to have their streets occupied by trailers which require neither. NMVs such as dilapidated caravans, burger vans or trailers bearing adverts can also make streets look an unloved mess. That’s why we had positive feedback on the proposal during consultation.” For a council survey, 321 addresses in areas with many NMVs were sent a postcard asking for views and an online form was made available and publicised. 135 valid responses were received, via these or the council website. 109 (82 per cent) said they would support action being taken. Twenty (15 per cent) would not support it and four (three per cent) were unsure.

News from the West Hove Forum...

NEWS FROM THE WEST HOVE FORUM Healthy Neighbourhood Fund At our meeting in July, many of the local groups who have received Healthy Neighbourhood Fund grants came to tell us about the wonderful projects they have been working on. These groups included the Friends of Wish Park, Friends of Stoneham Park, Purple People Kitchen, Stoneham Bakehouse, Off The Fence and the Secret Garden Group. Hove Business Association Hove Business Association is dedicated to improving the local economy. It has been going since 1929, but no longer has enough committee members and is holding 27 a Special General Meeting on 8th August to decide whether to disband. The Hove Business Partnership will be unaffected. For further information, visit www.hovebiz.com. Wish Park Surgery Wish Park Surgery has had to cap its list to new patients (unless they are members of families already registered), to ensure patient safety following a rapid increase in the list size. There are about 7,000 patients on the list, and three full time GPs at the surgery. The practice is recruiting to increase the clinical capacity at the surgery and expects to reopen the list in the autumn. The lack of access and parking for unwell and disabled patients has been taken up with the council by the two Wish ward councillors. Off The Fence The Portland Road-based charity Off The Fence work in three areas: emergency outreach to those living on the streets and a homeless centre, Antifreeze, which provides emotional and practical assistance for exiting homelessness; support for vulnerable women at Gateway women’s centre; and a Schools & Youth programme. Through Antifreeze, the charity are engaging with an increasing number of homeless

individuals. At present, there is a desperate need for men’s underwear – boxer shorts and socks. If you can help, email Antifreeze@offthefence.org.uk or phone 01273 933885. Off The Fence are also looking for a larger building for their Gateway women’s work, currently based in Station Road. If you have any suggestions or know of any potential building options, please contact: office@offthefence.org.uk. Ice cream vans outside schools Councillors Garry Peltzer Dunn and Robert Nemeth are concerned about the danger from queues for ice cream vans obstructing the pavement outside Hove Junior School in School Road and other schools. This results in children being forced out into the road. Garry has asked for the council’s licensing committee to have a full review of trading laws to prohibit such trading within 50 metres of a school entrance. The next West Hove Forum meeting and AGM will be at 2pm on Wednesday 28th September at Muriel House, Ingram Crescent. If you would like to attend on behalf of a group or business, email westhoveforum@gmail.com.

Nathalie’s Monthly Health TIP...

SUNSHINE FOODS Got everything packed to ensure you and your family don’t burn in the sun? Sunscreen? Hats? UV clothes? Parasol?

29

Did you also know that certain foods eaten daily will help repair existing sun damage and prepare your skin and cells for a day out in the sun? Here’s your essential food checklist: • Water: Dehydration will increase your chances of sun (and other) damage and wrinkles so make sure you sip water through the day. • Antioxidants: Add a little fresh lemon juice to that water and snack on berries, pineapples, red/orange peppers, tomatoes…the more colourful the better!

• Beta-carotene, another super antioxidant to help you combat cancer-causing free radicals, so fill up on carrots, sweet potatoes, mangoes, dark green leafy vegetables, melons, squashes, dried (brown) apricots, broccoli, peas. • Green tea: A great anti-inflammatory, anti-ageing drink! Cool it down with a little ice and add some lemon or fresh mint for a cool summer taste. • Vitamin E and Omega 3 fats: Good oils will maintain a healthy layer of fat underneath the skin, repairing and protecting it from sun damage so don’t hold back on seeds (chia, flax, sunflower, hemp, pumpkin), oily fish, nuts, eggs, avocados. Have a fabulous and healthy holiday! Nathalie x Nathalie Sansonetti BA, MA, DNN, Dip AIT is a Nutritional Therapist practising at the Tree of Life Centre in Hove.
