An interview with a new local councillor...

MEET WESTBOURNE COUNCILLOR CARMEN APPICH Carmen Appich was elected in May as a Labour councillor for Westbourne. Do you live in West Hove? I live just around the corner in Central Hove. Tell us about your background... I’m a qualified public sector accountant. I worked in local government for more than 20 years, then continued in public service by working in further 5 education, and am currently working 1 day a week for East Sussex Credit Union. Once a replacement for my credit union work has arrived, I will aim to be a full time councillor. I am married, and have an adult daughter who lives in London. The whole family work or have worked in public service. I’m vegetarian and I don’t drive so hopefully my ecological footprint is smaller than most, though it could no doubt be improved!

What made you want to become a councillor? I’m getting a pension from local government and thought it was time to give something back to the community. Given my skills and experience I thought standing for the Council would be the right thing to do. What do you hope to achieve in the Westbourne area? I’m passionate about improving the environment, particularly the very tired and run down looking western seafront, for our residents and visitors to enjoy. I hope to improve community engagement with the local authority. I am holding regular surgeries and I am also available to meet residents outside those times. I enjoy the varied questions and issues raised by residents, and hope to help resolve many problems over the next 4 years. My role as lead on adult social care is very challenging but also very exciting, and I hope to make a difference in this crucial area of work.

NEW KINGSWAY DEVELOPMENT REJECTED A planning application to build 37 apartments in a part-five part-eight storey building at 239-243 Kingsway, between Braemore Road and Berriedale Avenue, was refused by Brighton & Hove City Council’s Planning Committee on 10th July. The development by Agenda Homes of 33 two-bedroom flats and four three-bedroom flats would have replaced three two-storey houses.

71 objections were received by the council, as well as four letters of support. Neighbours objected that they would lose considerable amounts of sunlight and 11 the development would dwarf their properties. One neighbour commented: “It is simply the case that too much is being squeezed onto the site to meet viability targets but at the expense of residents’ amenity.” There were also concerns over loss of privacy and outlook. Hove MP Peter Kyle objected due to concerns about the development’s impact on its neighbours. The council’s planning officer had recommended approval of the application. His report said: “Overall it is considered that the public benefits of the scheme as a whole which includes the provision of a significant amount of housing are such that they outweigh the limited harm to the amenity of neighbouring occupiers.” Neighbours told the planning committee of their serious concerns about the overall scale and massing of the scheme, which would be only six metres away from 6 Braemore Road. That house would be in full shadow for a proportion of the day. Wish ward councillors Robert Nemeth and Garry Peltzer Dunn also spoke against the application. Cllr Nemeth said that half of the block would be undeveloped, which would be an ugly feature, and the party junction to the west would create a two-storey blank wall. He thought that a gap of 6m from the house in Braemore Road was unacceptable.

The applicant’s spokesman said the scheme had the support of Hove Civic Society and the Brighton Society. It was in an area of Kingsway identified for midrise buildings and would provide much-needed housing. The planning committee members were concerned about an incongruous street-scene resulting from the step-down in height and the step forward in the building line, as well as the height and massing at the back. They thought it would create an overly dominant building and would have an adverse impact on neighbouring properties. Cllr Joe Miller said it was a lost opportunity - it would be an overdevelopment of the site and the developer should come back with something smaller. The committee voted seven to three to refuse the proposal.

Your mind can’t wander off in a Pilates class; you have to be fully mindful and focused the whole time. You have to concentrate on the exercise you are performing, your alignment/posture, and coordinate the movements in a flowing way with your breath. By focusing in on the body, listening to it and being more conscious of what it’s doing, you become more aware of the body as a whole that you can carry over into everyday life. Relaxation is also a key principle in Pilates; it is important to be aware of where you may hold tension in the body and then learn to release it. Tensing muscles in your body is a normal response to stress and heightening emotions you may feel throughout the day. By learning to perform movements in a fluid, relaxed way you are finding a new way of moving with less tension and strain on your joints. In life we have lots of physical and mental stresses put on us, which is why it is so important to spend some time developing a better connection and relationship with our bodies and Pilates is a fantastic way to do this. NEW TREES FOR SHOREHAM PORT... Shoreham Port is to create a biodiversity corridor, with tree planting all the way along the northern edge of the port between Southwick and Hove Lagoon. Tony Parker, Director for Infrastructure and Climate Change at Shoreham Port, told us more about the plans: “Shoreham Port has two plans specifically designed to promote biodiversity in the City and these also contribute to our other various environmental aims such as supporting the Brighton & Lewes Downs Biosphere - a UNESCO (United Nations Economic, Social & Cultural Organisation) designation, developing our EcoPort Status and helping to reduce greenhouse gas and air quality emissions locally. “The Biosphere Partnership has, amongst many others, a mission to connect the natural environment of the South Downs surrounding Brighton & Hove with the people of the City. At present, the South Downs chalk grassland areas of the Biosphere around the north of Brighton are connected to the sea to the east and west of the City by two ‘horns’ passing southwards down the Ouse and Adur river valleys. The Biosphere Partnership would like to join the seaward ends of these two ‘horns’ along the seafront, so that the Biosphere entirely surrounds the built up areas of the City. Shoreham Port hopes to make a strong contribution to the Partnership’s ambition by creating biodiversity corridors on port land all the way from the Locks at Southwick to Hove Lagoon. One, called Shoreham Arbor, follows the south side of the A259 coast road and the other follows the edge of the shoreline along Basin Road South. “We want to make sure that both biodiversity corridors create the most ideal environment for as wide a range of plant, animal and bird species as possible, so we will take expert advice from Sussex Wildlife Trust and specialist consultants on what species to plant at any particular location. With Shoreham Arbor in particular, we are hoping that we will be able to introduce some native trees amongst the range of new planting, though we will

have to be mindful that all new plants must be tolerant of the windy and salty conditions along the port.” The Shoreham Arbor plans could include the grassed area between Boundary Road and Ocean Sports on Kingsway, though any plans would need to be agreed with land-owners, local communities and local authorities. THE BIG BLOAT… If I had a pound for every client who tells me, “I look six months pregnant and I’m not”…I’d be retiring soon! This is by far the biggest gut complaint I hear. So here’s a description of the most common causes of bloat and next month I will give you tips on how to get rid of it, so watch this space!

Why bloat?

#1 Slow digestion: Low levels of digestive enzymes and intolerances will make digestion of some sugars, some proteins, dairy and gluten tricky, with some repercussions on your gut lining and bacterial balance. #2 Bacterial imbalances: The fragile balance of gut 29 bacteria can easily be disturbed by medication overuse, stress, over-consumption of sugars, yeasts, alcohol, gluten, dairy, dehydration, parasites and viruses. #3 Yeast/candida: Does your belly expand after food, like dough does before baking, and are you prone to fungal infections or thrush? You may have a yeast overgrowth/ candida, which will cause fermentation, gas and bloat. #4 Constipation and gas: Slow elimination is a common cause of bloat. Constipation will often contribute to fermentation and gas, which can be uncomfortable and sometimes lead to IBS-like cramps.

#5 Hormonal changes: Particularly prevalent around the menopause, bloat can occur as the brain, gut, thyroid, adrenals and liver health are all closely related and so frequently out of balance due to diet, stress, synthetic hormones etc. More on what to do about bloat next month! CIRQUE BERSERK COMES TO HOVE LAWNS Cirque Berserk will be visiting Hove Lawns from 27th August to 3rd September. The international troupe combines contemporary circus artistry with adrenaline-fuelled stunt action. Activities for children of all ages...

There are over 30 jugglers, acrobats, aerialists, dancers, drummers and daredevil stuntmen, and the legendary motorcycle “Globe of Death” – hold your breath and raise the roof as up to four bikers ride upside down in the globe at speeds of up to 60mph. The louder you cheer, the faster they go! Among other international acts are the Timbuktu Tumblers, who take acrobatic art from the streets of Africa to a whole new level, presenting an incredible display of pyramids, jumping through hoops and flaming limbo poles; and Cuban Fidel Silot builds a 20-foot high tower of chairs and climbs to the top of it. Cirque Berserk is produced by Zippo’s, which visits Hove Lawns each summer. A 5,900-signature petition against the use of animals at Zippo’s Circus was presented to Brighton & Hove City Council’s Tourism, Development and Culture committee in March this year. The committee called for a ban on the use of all animals in circuses and said it was the council’s hope and expectation that event organisers would avoid the use of performing animals at events on council-owned land. Zippo’s have decided against the use of animals in the circus this year. In previous years, horses and budgerigars have performed in the shows.

MAD MONDAYS HOLIDAY CLUB Mad Mondays Holiday Club is to be held at Portslade United Reformed Church, BN41 1AB (corner of Boundary Road/St Aubyns Road), during the school holidays. Children of all ages and their families are welcome on Mondays 5th, 12th and 19th August from 10 to 12.30, for fun, games, Bible stories, songs, cooking, art and craft activities.
