An article on the men from West Hove who died in the First World War...

ALDRINGTON’S WAR MEMORIALS The memorial boards in St Philip’s and St Leonard’s on New Church Road record the names of 226 men who died in the conflict that became known as the First World War. In preparation for the Centenary Exhibition which we mounted at St Philip’s on November 8/9th, I have been helped by students at St Christopher’s School to research something of the lives and deaths of these men. There are just 24 names on the St Leonard’s board reflecting the relatively low population at the west end of New Church Road at the time. Most were working in unskilled or low-skilled work (labourer, gardener). Typical of the men in the parish was Frederick Barnett (7th Battalion, The London Regiment). He was the youngest child and only son of Frederick (a general labourer) and Rebecca Barnett. His father died in 1907 and his widowed mother (now working as a charwoman) moved her family to share Wish Cottage (then at the southern end of Woodhouse Road) with the Denyer family who also lost a son, Alfred, in the war. Fred enlisted in 1914, when he was just 16 years old. His employment was listed as ‘part-time newspaper boy’. He died of wounds in February 1918, aged just 19 years. The St Leonard’s board also records one of the first homeland air crashes which killed Flight Lieutenants Cyril Crapp and William Vince, whose planes crashed

over Portland Road in May 1917. They were observers flying from the airport at Telscombe Cliffs as part of the coastal protection forces. At the east end of the parish, population density was much higher and the social conditions were more varied. The men on the memorials were skilled workers – plumbers, electricians, drivers and plasterers. The St Philip’s board contains many men who died on ‘The Day Sussex Died’, 30th June 1916, during an ill-planned assault on the Boar’s Head Ridge designed to distract the Germans from the planned mass attack in the Somme salient the following day. 369 men from the Royal Sussex Regiment died and 749 more were seriously wounded. I recommend reading about this on-line, and particularly the part played by Colonel Grisewood. We have not yet done any research on the Second World War memorials. There are fewer names as the parish was smaller by 1938, and fewer soldiers died. Jane Terry

LOCAL PERSON... An interview with a boy from West Hove...

Alfie appears in “Gypsy” 12-year-old Alfie Jukes, who lives in Roman Road and is a student at Hove Park School, appeared on stage at the Chichester Festival Theatre throughout October in a sell-out production of the musical “Gypsy”. The show starred Olivier Award-winning actress Imelda Staunton and Kevin Whately, best known as ITV’s Lewis, and it achieved five-star reviews. “Gypsy” is based on the memoirs of Gypsy Rose Lee, with lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. We asked Alfie about his experience. Have you done any acting before? Since the age of six I have enjoyed attending Goldman’s Stage School on Saturday mornings and have performed in annual showcases. These shows tend to include acts from different productions. Some of my roles have included Bruce in Matilda, Danny in Grease and a zebra from The Lion King! What role did you have in the show and what did you have to do? In Gypsy I played the role of Kansas, a young boy who was part of a five-piece song and dance ensemble. In one of the acts I had to master a tap dance routine; this was quite a challenge as I had never tap-danced before. Rehearsals started back in August so I spent a lot of time with the other children in the show and we all bonded really well. Altogether I had 23 performances with three quick changes during every show. In the first scene I also Showtime Productions & Music Theatre 2000 present

played a clown in a kid’s talent show run by a character called Uncle Jocko. The most exciting performance was on Press Night as we had the anticipation of waiting for the reviews being released the next day. How did you fit it in with school? My school, Hove Park, was extremely understandable and supportive as they gave me permission to have time off school for technical rehearsals and performances. Did you enjoy it and would you like to do more acting in the future? I’m so glad that I got the job in Gypsy as I made loads of new friends and loved every minute of performing on stage in such a good show. It was also a pleasure to meet and learn from the amazing actress Imelda Staunton who has now become one of my idols. I am definitely going to carry on performing arts and auditioning for various things, as I love it with a passion and think I might try and take it on for the rest of my life.

Flu occurs every year. It’s a highly infectious disease that can lead to serious illness. Older people and those with long term health conditions are among the most at risk from flu. The best way to avoid catching and spreading flu is by having a vaccination before the flu season starts.

The monthly article from the Hove Civic Society....

A GLANCE AT THE PAST AND A LOOK TO THE FUTURE

THE HOVE CIVIC SOCIETY ANNUAL MEETING The 53rd AGM of HCS was held on 16 October at our usual venue, Courtlands Hotel. Prior to the meeting some members enjoyed a buffet supper giving us a chance to chat informally. We hope an opportunity to socialise will become a feature of some meetings in future. The AGM commenced with the chairman’s report of last year’s activities. He emphasised the great effort required to keep abreast of planning proposals and where appropriate make comment, supportive or otherwise (see the website www.hovecivicsociety.org). Work on the tree project continues but it has to be remembered that planting can only be progressed with the support of the residents. The chairman made an important announcement that Sir Timothy Sainsbury, the MP for Hove 1973-97, is willing to become a Patron for the Hove Plinth, which is a fantastic boost for the project which continues to occupy much time (see the website). Next the treasurer, Andrew Haicalis, informed the meeting that the finances are in good health. A surplus had been made last year with a healthy increase in donations towards specific projects. The officers and committee were unanimously re-elected (see the website).

The final two items related to slight alterations in the constitution and a proposal to become a charitable company. AGMs are often poorly attended and formulaic. Not so HCS. We aim to ensure we have a speaker of interest. In this instance we were not disappointed. We were pleased to welcome Tim Hague, property manager at Shoreham Port, who gave a wide-ranging illustrated talk on the organisation and working of the port. The site extends from Hove Lagoon to Shoreham toll bridge - 3.5 miles. He explained the structure of the organisation, the import and exports. For example, Sussex grain is brought into the port, dried in silos and exported to Scotland to be used to make porridge. The port is the second largest for scallops. He explained the role in the protection of beaches, the great levels of occupancy in the commercial estate and how work is ongoing with BEC to install solar panels. Recycling is a priority, as is the provision of bike shelters. He concluded by saying that the intention is to promote understanding, increase jobs and increase shipping. (For more information see the Port website.)

KINGSWAY AND WEST HOVE RESIDE

More council consultati X Doesn’t Mark the Spot! Voters living between Norman Road and Middleton Avenue, and Mansfield Road and Portland Villas, have lost their polling station and the council is looking for another. Originally the polling station was in the sports pavilion on the Saxon Road side of Wish Park. It was spacious and had a level entrance so people with prams or wheelchairs didn’t have a problem getting in to vote. However the pavilion was let to a nursery and so for recent elections voters had to join voters living east of Wish Park in the pavilion on the Wish Road side of the park. It wasn’t as good; there are steps up into it and a portable ramp had to be set up for disabled people. However on May 7th 2015 both the General and City Council Elections will take place, and the east pavilion would be too small for the expected turnout. So the city council has been looking in vain for a polling station to replace the west pavilion. Any voter can apply for a postal vote from the Electoral Services Office on 01273 291999 or email electors@ brighton-hove.gov.uk. (They could even decide to vote in person instead by returning their postal vote to their polling station.)

ions keep KAWHRA busy! However, many people still prefer to vote in person. Accessibility will be important. The law says that there should be no physical barriers for disabled people to gain access to council services, so steps would be undesirable. Council staff have considered a range of alternative premises, but have not been able to identify anywhere suitable. They say that one option could be to site a portacabin in Saxon Road, as it isn’t practical to site a portacabin in the recreation ground. Another option would be to site a marquee in the recreation ground. The council is consulting about these options, and asking if there are any other alternatives that the council should consider (http://www.brighton-hove.gov.uk/ content/council-and-democracy/voting-and-elections/ partial-review-polling-places). You can email your comments to electors@brighton-hove.gov.uk or write Freepost BR2003 to Electoral Services at Brighton Town Hall by the deadline: 19th December. City Plan Changes The Government’s Inspector has asked the council to consider housing sites around the city to increase hous-

ing, and to change policies for other areas. Public consultation is between 4th November and 16th December. The proposals are on www.brighton-hove.gov.uk and in libraries. Sue (kawhra@gmail.com)

Welcome to the Exercise - Insanity Class February edition of Fiveways Gardens Regular article about local exercise opportunities by West Hove resident Isobel Muir...

This month I was invited by Dino of Ds12FITNESS to try out an Insanity class at South Portslade Community Centre. I purposefully didn’t look too closely, so I wasn’t completely sure what the class would entail, though I could hazard a guess from the name! I had visions of a circuit-training type affair but much much more hardcore. I was more right than I could have imagined.

Dino told me that each week he does a slightly different variation on the class so as to make sure the routine continues to challenge the exerciser, thus building more muscle and never allowing the class to become easy or routine. LOCAL gardening... Here is our monthly gardening feature written by Nareesa Sulaiman, a local garden designer...

In the garden...december 2014 It’s difficult to potter in the garden when the ground is waterlogged or frozen, so December is a good month to curl up somewhere cosy indoors with a cuppa, a pile of gardening books and a picture in your mind about what you’d ideally like the garden to look like. Consider first if you are happy with the basic layout of the garden; if you are considering changing the structure, speak to a local garden designer or landscaper about your ideas. Assuming that you are happy with the structure of the garden, choose an area that you’d like to enhance; sometimes a bed or border looks tired and needs revamping. On paper, make a plan of the bed, marking the location of plants that you want to keep. Next, consider how the bed could be improved: more colour, variable textures, a greater array of heights? Before you begin to browse the plant books, assess the characteristics of the bed in terms of light exposure, aspect (north, east, south or west facing), and available moisture: dry, moist or wet. Assessing these features allows you to make informed decisions about whether a plant is suitable for the bed. It is also worth noting that, unless the bed has been created from imported top soil, the soil is likely to

have an alkaline pH due to the chalk bedrock on which our city is built. Now the fun part begins; most gardeners love looking at plants and considering which ones they would like and whether they will work in the desired location. Although lots of emphasis is placed on flower colour and flowering months, remember to also consider the flower shapes, eg are they daisy, ball or bell shaped? A mixture of flower shapes works to enhance the overall look of the bed. Additionally, give consideration to the shape and colours of the leaves; will they work with what is already in the bed? Do you want a range of leaf shapes and textures? All these factors highlight the complexity of choosing the right plants but also unveil the challenges that we gardeners love about striving for that perfect border! Make a list of desired plants and sketch where you will locate them onto your bed plan. Save for late spring when the ground is beginning to warm up and the local nurseries have restocked for the new season. Feature plant for December Viburnum x bodnantense ‘Dawn’ This deciduous variety of Viburnum has clusters of fragrant, pink flowers on bare branches from late autumn through until spring, a beautiful sight during the winter months!
