I am afraid I am a bit last minute every Christmas and find the whole thing a bit of a strain often scratching around for presents in the shops on Christmas Eve before the shops close. I always make a resolution to be super organised for the next Christmas but never seem to pull it off. I hope you all have it nicely under control!

Here is a local advent calendar with a difference...

WORLD’S FIRST BEACH HUT ADVENT CALENDAR GOES FROM STRENGTH TO STRENGTH This December will see the ninth annual Beach Hut Advent Calendar every night on Hove seafront. Now established as a Brighton and Hove tradition, this family friendly event will give you an opportunity to mark the countdown to Christmas in a uniquely artistic and spiritual way. Each night from the 1st to the 24th December, one hut (and one hut only) will open its doors from 5.30pm – 6.30pm to reveal an artistic surprise to remind us of the true meaning of Christmas. Come down to the seafront to enjoy a warming drink, a mince pie and to wonder at the creativity of the artists, schools and community groups who are all taking part this year. Regular visitors will be able to collect a special beach hut stamp each night and the person who has collected the most stamps by Christmas Eve will have the chance to win a fantastic Christmas hamper courtesy of the Co-Op. The event is organised by BEYOND, which uses creativity and the arts to stimulate thinking around Christian spirituality. The full schedule of openings and further information about the event can be found at: www.beyondchurch.co.uk.

Featuring another local West Hove person…

LOCAL PERSON JOHN O’CONNELL OF RICHARDSON ROAD John O’Connell runs the award-winning RC Secker’s butchers in Richardson Road. How long have you worked in Richardson Road? Our shop moved from Boundary Road, on the Portslade and Hove border, to our Richardson Road shop, opening on 29th July 1997, making this year our eighteenth. I have a great team of staff who are there to offer friendly service and advice, and assist the customers with their orders, both the local residents and trade, with top quality meat and poultry from around Sussex and the 9 UK. Did you know, we have over 20 sausage varieties and fruit, vegetables, eggs and condiments, with a cheese counter and cooked meats. Do you live in the area too? From about the age of 13 I was brought up in Clarendon Road, then later I bought my own house just down in Braemore Road, so I know the area very well. I now live in North Lancing. © G Dinnage

What do you most like about the area? The community and village atmosphere, its reliable traders, and that we cross trade with one another, so that you do not need to go out of the street to get what you need. Our community of businesses have the majority of what locals could require. What changes would you like to see? Nothing much really, it is still working very well considering the impact of the multi-nationals, yet for the whole area including Portland Road, it’s just the amount of empty shops, which I feel needs real encouragement of real local traders, not more of the major players. For our own street, we would like to see a real general grocers return, as we have all the specialists catering for a variety of topics, yet not a replacement for the mainstay grocer. Do you have anything special planned for Richardson Road at Christmas? The street did try holding an open evening, however it wasn’t supported well enough. The majority of the shops make up their windows with some festive decoration. For our shop we always offer plenty of fresh turkeys, special farm gammons, roasting beef, and the usual Christmas fare. A local pub has been awarded for the second year in a row...

THE GINGER PIG WINS BEST FOOD PUB AWARD The Ginger Pig in Hove Street has won the Best Food Pub award at the Brighton & Hove Food and Drink Awards. The public were invited to nominate their favourite food venues in 18 categories and the top three in each category were then judged by media and business people. Only businesses with a food hygiene rating of four or more were allowed through to the finals. The winners were announced at the Hotel du Vin in the Lanes in November. We asked general manager James Thomson about the award... How does it feel to be given the Best Food Pub award for two years running? We’re all super-chuffed to have been awarded this award 13 in twice in a row (we were runner up to The Foragers 2013 – winners in 2012). Consistency is the thing we all strive for, both in the kitchen and in service from the bar and waiting staff, so this is a really important indicator that we’re doing things right. What do you think has made you so successful? I would like to think we are successful through keeping things nice and simple – really good atmosphere, an excellent drink menu, casual and relaxed service but with the ability to step it up with knowledge and suggestion

when asked, and most importantly, really good, full-flavoured and seasonal cooking coming from the kitchen. We also spend a lot of time looking around other leading restaurants and food-led pubs, especially in London, to make sure that where possible we can stay ahead of local trends and keep our loyal regulars stimulated with new ideas. FESTIVE RUNNING With Christmas on the way it’s time for yet more running! To kick things off in style why not sign up for the Santa Dash on 12th December? It starts at 10.30 on Hove Prom. Your Santa suit and beard is provided as part of the entry fee. Here I am looking mighty fine in mine a few years ago with some fellow santas (it was a tad windy). The run is only 5k so easily completed by those of all abilities and you have the perfect excuse if slow. Beards and flappy suits aren’t conducive to speed, though tucking in the trouser legs does help, with the added bonus of looking très chic. As you can imagine, this race doesn’t 15 attract an elite field so get stuck in, safe in the knowledge you won’t be lapped by Mo Farah. Then again, how could you tell? If you are saving the pennies to buy that all important gift of a lifetime for someone, then there are plenty of festive free (or very cheap) alternatives. This time of year is the only time to get in official extra parkruns to add to your tally (remember the more runs you do the more t-shirts you can amass). On Christmas Day Preston Park is hosting at the normal time of 9am. On Boxing Day it is normal parkrun at 9, then the traditional Boxing Day

races, also in Preston Park. There is a walking race at 10.30 then a running race of up to four laps of the park (5 miles maximum). This race is a charity event with a suggested donation of £3 minimum. After the joy of three runs in two days there are only six days to go until another double day - Friday January 1st. This time two parkruns in one morning courtesy of Hove Prom at 9 followed by Hove Park at 10.30. In fact this is the only day one can officially claim two parkruns. What a perfect start to 2016! Along with all these official runs there are plenty of group runs going on all over the place over the festive period and I heartily recommend you get stuck into some or all of them with the same gusto as you do your Christmas lunches and parties. Though I don’t recommend you turn up at the work Christmas party in Lycra and hi vis. For more details about my life in exercise please visit my blog “IMFitHove”. Thanks. To help you get into the Christmas spirit...

PARISH OF ALDRINGTON CHRISTMAS 2015 EVENTS Advent, the season of preparation for Christmas, starts on November 29th.Every Tuesday in Advent (which ends on Christmas Day) there will be a Study Group meeting in the Rectory, 77 New Church Road at 8pm, to discuss ideas about Christmas. In December there will be two Christingle Services raising money for the Children’s Society by giving away Christingles (oranges with candles and sticky sweets) and retelling the story of Jesus’ birth. These are at St Philip’s on November 29th at 4pm and at St Leonard’s on December 6th at 4pm. While aimed primarily at families, these services are a beautiful way to start anyone’s Christmas. A child’s face lit by a candle can remind us of the peace Christmas is supposed to bring us all. 19

Everybody at St Leonard’s and St Philip’s wishes you all a happy and peaceful Christmas and a prosperous New Year.

On December 3rd at 2.30pm the Over-50s Social Club meets in St Philip s Vestry for tea, cake, chat and entertainment. All this for only £2 per person! Our Christmas Fair on Saturday December 5th 11am-12.30pm in St Philip’s Hall provides a wonderful opportunity to shop early (and cheaply) for unique gifts, cards and decorations, or possibly to win them on the tombola or raffle! There will be great homemade cakes, jams and pickles on offer too, with a variety of other stalls selling items including jewellery and books. Then take a break from the preparations and sing yourself back into the Christmas spirit on December 20th at 4pm when we have our Traditional Carol Service with David Dennis on the organ, and Patcham Junior Brass providing a wonderful musical atmosphere. This is followed by free mulled wine or non-alcoholic punch and mince pies in the church hall. Our popular Crib Service is on December 24th at 5.30pm at St Leonard’s, followed by The Midnight Mass at St Philip’s at 11.30pm. On

A papier-mâché angel from Sunday School

December 25th there will be Christmas Eucharists at St Leonard’s at 9.30am and at St Philip’s at 11am. Everybody at St Leonard’s and St Philip’s wishes you all a happy and peaceful Christmas and a prosperous New Year. Jane Terry

Here is our monthly gardening feature written by Nareesa Sulaiman, a local garden designer...

WEST HOVE

IN THE GARDEN... DECEMBER 2015 The wet and cold days of December are not always conducive to pottering about in the garden so this is a good month to do some planning for the new year ahead. I am often asked to help revamp existing beds so here are a few pointers to help you make decisions... Reflect on how you would like to improve the bed: more colour through the year, a greater variety of textures, a larger array of heights? Make a plan of the bed, marking the location of plants that you want to keep. A scaled plan is really useful as it shows exactly where plants are and how big the spaces are, but that is only achievable if you go outside to measure the bed, measure where the plants are and then plot your findings onto a21 piece of graph paper at an appropriate scale, which can all be a bit time-consuming so an approximate plan will probably be good enough for general improvements! Assess the characteristics of the bed. How much sunlight does it get, full sun, part sun, full shade? What direction does the bed face - North, East, South or West? How dry is the soil -dry, moist or wet? When does the bed look good? Which months/seasons could it be improved? Assessing these features helps you to make informed decisions about whether a plant is suitable for the bed.

Decide if you would like to have a colour theme or if you want to include/exclude certain groups of plants, eg evergreens, roses, herbs. Now comes my favourite part; browse books, catalogues and websites to find plants that meet your criteria. Websites such as the RHS and Crocus provide plant databases which are useful starting points. I also find looking at pictures of different plant combinations very helpful. Try to select a mixture of flower forms as well as a variety of leaf shapes. As you choose your plants, pencil them on to your plan, taking care to use information about plant spread so that you don’t try to put too many plants onto the plan. Review heights, colours and flowering months. When you are happy with your choices, create a finalised list to store with your plan, ready for plant buying in the spring. Feature plant for December Clematis cirrhosa ‘Wisley Cream’ The cream, bell-shaped flowers of this Clematis never fail to lift my spirits during the winter months. Happy gardening! Nareesa

So here are a few tips to help make the next few weeks go more smoothly: • Drink! And I’m not talking booze here – 2 litres of still water, sipped through the day, with a squeeze of lemon here and there to help the old liver. Hot drinks can be dehydrating, so limit to 2 a day. • Give your body a break once in a while by laying off the drink at least one day per week – and ‘sweat it out’ with a brisk walk/run/swim, especially after a heavy night. • Recovery smoothie – great boost any time of day. Blend: almond/coconut milk to taste + 1 handful of kale/spinach + ½ lemon juice + 1 tbsp chia seeds + 1 banana + 1 tsp raw honey + 1 handful of soaked almonds + 1 tsp goji berries. Delicious and you’ll find all the ingredients at your nearest supermarket. • Count your blessings – not nutrition-related, I know, but it will go a long way to lifting your mood and ward off the Christmas blues. Joyeux Noël everyone! X Nathalie Sansonetti BA, MA, DNN, Dip AIT is a Nutritional Therapist practising at the Tree of Life Centre in Hove. Robert Nemeth, Councillor for Wish ward, on his day as a binman...

ROBERT NEMETH...BINMAN FOR A DAY I have long felt that the bin service suffers the greatest disconnect between those making the decisions on the Council’s Environment Committee and those actually doing the work. When I contacted CityClean to take the first step to address this by spending a day with the crews in our area, I kept being asked if I really meant a whole day, doing actual work, with a 5:30am start. What was I letting myself in for? As somebody who goes to bed late, early starts are certainly not my preference. I set three different alarms and made it to Hollingdean Depot on time. My reward was a warm welcome from the guys in the cab of the truck with an energy drink! 33 Once we arrived on New Church Road, we got straight to work as I had already been trained the day before and provided with steel-toe-cap boots and clothes for all weathers. Although it was raining, I quickly found that just a T-shirt and high-vis vest worked best. The members of the refuse team that does most of Wish Ward – Mark, Chris and Patrik – are recognisable to many. Lots of residents did a double-take though when they saw its newest member, including my nan on St Leonard’s Gardens who didn’t recognise me when I banged on her window to take away her bin. We worked solidly

and collected in the region of ten tonnes of waste before heading back to base. I spent the final part of my shift with our local recycling team of Tony, Ann and Frank on a different truck. We started at the bottom of Woodhouse Road but had to reverse all of the way back down when a single car blocked the exit. The guys take such problems in their stride but it is clear that the service would run a lot more smoothly if certain members of the public were a little more considerate. I can’t emphasise enough just how much responsibility there is in being a driver and, again, urge motorists in particular to be a little more patient when stuck behind a team on a narrow street. The safety of our crews, who work hard for us, is paramount after all. My hope is to make this an annual outing. The work is indeed heavy but there is no substitute for properly understanding how something works than to actually try doing it.

Here is a great local scheme that has found its way to West Hove...

THE REAL JUNK FOOD PROJECT BRIGHTON NOW AT THE HIVE IN STONEHAM PARK The concept is a simple one: intercept food waste from supermarkets, restaurants and local businesses that was destined for landfill and use it to feed people who need it, on a ‘pay as you feel’ basis - not just homeless people but anyone struggling financially. The revolutionary ‘pay as you feel’ concept encourages people to think about what that plate of food means to them; if they can’t afford to pay money, then they may want to wash up or weigh some intercepted food or spread the word. The Real Junk Food Project Brighton has been running for just under a year. In this time we have saved35 over 17 tonnes of edible food from landfill and fed thousands of people. We help individuals who are suffering from social isolation, loneliness and other mental health issues; our community cafés aim to provide a safe space. So far we have two weekly cafés and a monthly pop-up at The Hive, and a vast number of volunteers to help. We need food, help and support and hungry people to feed. We are a community interest company with the intention of using Government funding to expand and grow. Please get in touch to get involved.

Earn up to £1000 per week with a Renubath Franchise

Renubath have franchises available in Brighton, Hove, Eastbourne and Bournemouth. The franchise is ideal for anyone with car spraying experience. Training provided

For more information contact 01273 956290 or visit www.renubath.co.uk

We cook a range of healthy fresh dishes from whatever ingredients are available on the day. Our volunteer teams are very creative and most of the dishes are vegetarian/vegan. The project came about in Brighton after our founder Adam Buckingham saw the project happening in Leeds where the creator of The Real Junk Food Project, Adam Smith, lives, and where they have 23 successful cafés running. Every Friday we run a café from One Church, Gloucester Place, Brighton. Every Thursday we are at Hollingdean Community Centre and on the first Wednesday of the month we are at The Hive, Stoneham Park. We also regularly cater for different events all over the city. We recently catered for MPs at The Houses of Parliament as they discussed the Food Waste Bill. We started our pop-up café at The Hive in September and have held three very successful lunches there so far. We invite members of the local community to get involved. We are there on the first Wednesday every month. We are currently looking for our own premises to run a seven-day-a-week café and community space. If anyone knows of a space that we could use, please contact us: realjunkfood@gmail.com LET’S REALLY FEED THE WORLD. WHD November 2015

approved by our panel at our London headquarters. Lectures happening in 2016 include Anthony Penrose on ‘The Boy who bit Picasso!’ Lucia Gahlin on ‘Egyptian Art for an Afterlife’ and Gillian Hovell on ‘A Mediterranean Tour’, as well as talks on the Astors, the Rothschilds and the Sackville-Wests. Diana Lloyd will be guiding us through ‘20th Century Ceramics’ whilst Sue Berry takes us back to the decorations in later Tudor houses. You will probably also like to join us for study days and a range of outings and holidays, sometimes in conjunction with other local NADFAS groups, and you will certainly want to read our excellent quarterly arts magazine ‘Review’, which as well as listing events at major art venues across the country has a variety of fascinating articles and great presentation that matches the quality of any of the top art magazines available to buy at the news-stand. All this and free entry to lectures is included in the annual subscription of only £45. The venue where we meet has just undergone a major renovation and is a lovely setting for the Tuesday morning lectures, with new acoustics and projection in a comfortable, warm but well-ventilated environment. Additionally the café where members like to gather from 10am for coffee or even breakfast also offers a wide lunch menu for those who want to dine and mix with friends after the show. Indeed the combination of these facilities with our lecture programme makes this the ideal society to make new friends with people of similar artistic and cultural tastes. So why not give us a try? You can choose up to two individual lectures to attend in a season for £5 each or go for full membership immediately.
