West Hove resident Lindsey Tydeman works at The Keep archive centre and sent us this fabulous photo...

WEST WESTHOVE HOVE

FROM THE KEEP ARCHIVE… This glorious celebration of civic pride looks a little bit like an Advent calendar with all the windows opened! It even follows a similar design, with the most important person at the centre surrounded by his associates of higher, and, as you spread outward, lesser ranks.

Irreverence aside, there is something quite moving in Hove Council’s response to the great event of 1953, the coronation of HM Queen Elizabeth II. One can imagine how each of the 41 individuals prepared for their photograph. They would have made sure that their fur-trimmed gowns, hats and gloves were spotless. They would have been at great pains to stand in a position which showed their figures to the best advantage, holding or wearing their accessories just as protocol dictated. In the centre is His Worship the Mayor of Hove, Councillor AE Brocke; below him is Mr Stevens the Town Clerk. Around them are ranged the Aldermen, while the Councillors fill up the edges. The five ladies are wearing gloves and hats, while the gentlemen hold their gloves, tucking their hats under one arm.

Brighton and Hove Archivist at The Keep Andrew Bennett says: ‘This huge image probably had pride of place in Hove’s old Town Hall, and luckily for us it somehow escaped the fire which destroyed the building in 1966.’ www.thekeep.info Lindsey Tydeman

Local history from Rachel Bridgeman...

CHRISTMAS 1916... THE THIRD CHRISTMAS AT WAR As the schools on Portland Road are decked with beautiful, handmade decorations and reverberate with children singing Christmas songs, it is hard to imagine the Christmas scenes in those same classrooms just over a hundred years ago. 1916 is remembered as the year in which the armies of Europe and her global allies bled to death. The year started with the introduction of conscription in Britain and the death throes of the Gallipoli campaign; continued with the slaughter of a million men in the war’s longest battle, Verdun; the Battle of Jutland 9bore witness to 8,500 casualties in a few brutal hours; and the Battle of the Somme, which commenced with the bloodiest day in British military history, ended with 1.5 million casualties. This manifested itself locally on a day-to-day level with the weekly publication of lists of missing in the local newspapers and the convoys of ambulances departing Brighton Station for the 25 military hospitals around the towns of Brighton and Hove, both major locations for the treatment and convalescence of wounded

This photograph of wounded soldiers at the Portland Road School military hospital, Christmas 1916, is courtesy of East Sussex Record Office, The Keep (Ref: AMS 7312/3/4)

soldiers. In fact, it was in Hove, just three days after Britain declared war on Germany, that the first military hospital in the entire country was mobilised. In June 1915, one of the largest military hospitals in Hove was established at the requisitioned Portland Road Schools. The local press praised the Portland Road Hospital as “unique among its fellows ….. with a glorious sea view. The only local hospital that has all its wards on the ground floor; the only one with a large dining hall and recreation room in the very centre of the building; and the only one, with a fine open-air ward looking straight to the sea.“ To learn more about the history of the Portland Road Hospital and the history of Hove during the Great War, join a guided historical walking tour led by a local historian. Hove Actually Walking Tours are fun, informative and best suited to the incurably curious. Whether it’s your first visit or you have lived here your whole life, the tours are a great way to discover, uncover and experience the area. Other tours cover the history of the villages of Hove and Aldrington (through the ages). For information: email hoveactuallywalks@gmail.com or Facebook (Hove Actually Walking Tours). Another lovely community event at the Secret Garden...

An event at the Cornerstone Community Centre...

SECRET GARDEN CHRISTMAS CELEBRATION

HOVE LOCAL CHRISTMAS MARKET

Saturday 14th December 2019, 1pm – 2pm

The Hove Local Monthly Market was set up in August 2018 to create a space for local artists and craftspeople as well as small businesses to show and sell their work alongside Brighton and Hove residents wishing to sell unwanted bric-a-brac and collectables, and it has slowly developed into a vibrant and sociable environment.

The Secret Garden Group would like 13 to invite you to our Christmas event to help us celebrate another wonderful year for the garden. There will be roast chestnuts, singing, a ukulele band, mulled wine, mince pies and Father Christmas. This is a free event, but we encourage donations. Fingers crossed for some dry weather! We have had another successful year, winning ‘outstanding’ in the RHS Britain in Bloom “It’s Your Neighbourhood” awards, Gold for Brighton in Bloom best community garden and Silver for Brighton in Bloom best wildlife garden. We now have a lovely working pump on a water butt barrel and this is dedicated to commemorate our founder Mike Sharman who sadly passed away in 2018. For more information email Joi Jones, secretgarden730@ gmail.com. Sessions through winter are dependent on weather, but most Wednesdays and Saturdays 11am until 2pm.

We would like to invite you to our Christmas market on Saturday 7th December between 1.30-5pm at the Cornerstone Community Centre, Church Road, Hove. Come and join us at this friendly local market selling quality handcrafted items such as candles, cards, calendars, children’s backpacks and illustrations, jewellery, pots and planters, delicious vegan food, A Christmas upcycled art and bric-acard on sale at brac/vintage. There will be toys, the market aerial shots of Brighton & Hove Albion’s Amex stadium, Christmas decorations, aromatherapy oils, eco-friendly cleaning products and the list goes on. Check out the market’s Facebook page - www.facebook. com/HoveMarkets/ - to see what is in store for you. Warm welcome guaranteed.

Meet a resident who showcases work by local artists in Portland Road...

WEST HOVE

LOCAL PERSON...JULES O’KEEFE Jules O’Keefe is an artist who runs Jule’s Emporium at 100 Portland Road, which opened at the beginning of the year. Tell us more about Jule’s Emporium... I wanted to open a space that is warm and inviting. A place to show art in an informal setting, a gallery with a twist. We showcase a huge array of artwork from many local artists and makers including cards, ceramics, paintings, prints, textiles, jewellery, decorative plant displays and much more. When I’m not spending my time with the day to day running of things, I’m here, as well as other artists, using the area as a working studio. I would love to become a hub for the local community and aim to host workshops with a range of guest artists. I feel like the Emporium is something which is evolving over time and I am very excited for the future! Do you have your own art on display? Yes, I work in mixed media so have quite a varied selection of work on show as I prefer to create across lots of different mediums. I have recently taken an interest in book binding and have been creating my own art journals.

What are the most popular items you sell? The original pieces sell very well as I think people appreciate the fact they are getting something that is one of a kind. We have just introduced hand printed T-shirts which have become quite popular. We have plenty of choice for a range of budgets whether you’re looking for a unique present or something special for yourself. How will you be spending Christmas? It’s going to be a busy run-up to Christmas as we are taking part in The Artists Open Houses. We will be open every day in December right up to and including Christmas Eve, showcasing lots of new and exciting works by our artists. You are new to the area; what do you think about Portland Road? I love it! I feel it’s so important to shop locally and the community spirit in this area is great. There is such an array of interesting, unique shops and eateries; we are actually all in talks about hosting some late night shopping events this December so do be sure to drop in if you are in the area! Jule’s Emporium is at 100 Portland Road. For more information, see Jule’s Emporium on Facebook and Instagram.

News from the council...

NEW ELECTRIC VEHICLE CHARGING POINTS More than 200 new electric vehicle charging points are set to be installed across the city over the next few months. Following a tender process, the council has appointed Electric Blue to install and maintain the electric vehicle charge points. The project is being funded with £300,000 from the Office of Low Emissions, and £100,000 from Electric Blue. The 207 new points will include 30 in areas with high parking demand where the council are proposing mandatory Electric Charging spaces, many of them in response to requests from residents who own or are thinking of buying electric vehicles but have no off-street parking available. Lamp post chargers: Most of the charging points will be installed on lamp posts and will provide a full charge for vehicles parked overnight. These will be installed by January next year. A mobile phone app showing the locations of all points in the city and whether they are in use will be available to download. Drivers will pay 28p per kilowatt hour to charge their vehicles at the public points. Fast chargers: Fast chargers, taking around five hours, which are already installed in the city centre, will be integrated into the new app. The council will consider installing further fast chargers outside the city centre if there is a clear demand from residents. All the public charge points will be powered by renewable energy. The council has also been awarded £86,265 research funding from Innovate UK for a trial of smart network extenders, which increase the number of vehicles which can be charged at each point.

Don’t forget to vote in the General Election...

ELECTION CANDIDATES These are the candidates in Hove for the General Election on Thursday 12th December: Beatrice Bass (Liberal Democrats) Dame Dixon (Official Monster Raving Loony Party) Angela Hancock (Brexit Party) Peter Kyle (Labour Party) Robert Nemeth (Conservative Party) Charlotte Sabel (Independent) Ollie Sykes (Green Party)

WEST HOVE

Nathalie’s tip for a healthier holiday season…

TOP ‘RECOVERY’ DRINK With all the best intentions to avoid ‘overdoing it’ in the holidays, things will often turn to total party madness and over the top indulgences. So rather than give you tips on how to avoid over-eating and drinking (which are still great ideas☺), I thought I’d share my most effective and powerful ‘day after the night before’ drink recipe. It will rehydrate you, restore a little order in your gut, help digest rich and sugary foods, reduce inflammation and put some zing in your tired, foggy brain. Here’s how to make it: (for one) Ingredients: 200-400ml of warm water 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice ½ tsp turmeric powder ½ tsp freshly grated or ground ginger ¼ tsp cinnamon A pinch of black pepper (to activate the turmeric, so not optional) 1 tsp raw unpasteurised honey

Method: Mix the turmeric, pepper, cinnamon, ginger and honey together first. Then add the water and the other ingredients and sip at your preferred temperature. Drink about 15 minutes before each meal or at least once a day (before breakfast) and you can continue for 15 to 20 days for a deeper cleanse. Omit the apple cider vinegar if you suffer from candida and feel worse with vinegars or fermented foods. Have a great holiday and a big thank you for your support this year. I love receiving your emails and messages! Nathalie x Nathalie Sansonetti, Health & Nutrition Coach Want some clarity on your health and gut issues? Book a complimentary 30-minute consultation today! WEST HOVE

This article is from local charity Together Co Befriending...

CAN YOU SPARE AN HOUR TO MAKE SOMEONE’S WEEK? Before her health deteriorated, Linda travelled the world and worked as a letting agent and holistic therapist. Since her disabilities developed, she can only leave the house once a week with assistance. A visit from Rebecca, a Together Co Befriending volunteer, makes a huge difference to Linda’s week. Linda: “When I became housebound, my friendships slowly dissolved as we had less and less in common. My befriending 33 volunteer, Bex, is great. She is the only person I see socially. My carers visit daily to help me with my daily routine, but there’s no time to chat. Together Co match you with someone who shares your interests. Even an hour a week of friendliness can make a lot of difference to my life.” Bex: “Popping round to Linda’s for a cup of tea and a catch-up is something I know we both look forward to each week. It’s a mutually beneficial connection.”

About Together Co Befriending Everybody should have somebody. We match people with people to create friendships that make life better. We’ve been doing so for over 20 years. In that time, we’ve seen loneliness eased and lives changed – all through the simple power of human connection.

Please get in touch if you can spare an hour a week to visit a neighbour. Call us on 01273 775888 or email: sally.clarke@togetherco.org.uk News from the Friends of Stoneham Park…

STONEHAM PARK CHRISTMAS MARKET On Saturday 7th December, our Christmas Market will be in the Holy Cross Church hall, as in previous years, with additional stalls, hot mulled wine and street food in the park between 11.00 and 15.00.

www.thepaintproject.co.uk Tel: 07514 200957

We will also have our fabulous prize draw, with tickets already on sale in some local businesses. Many shops and businesses on and around Portland Road have kindly donated the prizes and the raffle will help us raise funds to try to improve the park in little ways we can. Better still, we hope we have brought cheer to the park by ensuring there is always something fun going on there! Richard Hearnden

An update from your Local Action Team...

NEWS FROM THE WEST HOVE FORUM Beach Hut Advent Calendar. The Hove Beach Hut Association are taking over the running of the Beach Hut Advent Calendar from Beyond Church. There isn’t enough time to plan and organise the event properly for this year but they intend to run it next year. Healthy Neighbourhood Fund Grants. Following presentations at our last meeting in October, grants from the 2019 fund have been awarded as follows: Hove Junior School PTA will receive £500 to plant a green wall of shrubs and small trees along the playground bordering Portland Road. This will enable many children whose homes have no outside space to35 experience greenery and gardening. The planting will also absorb some of the traffic fumes and provide a screen from the main road. Ingram Crescent Residents Association’s Rose Garden Group will receive £500 to create a bird feeding station which will enable all garden users to enjoy watching bird activities from the nearby benches. The Vallance Community Centre were awarded £500 to support their austerity cooking group, community healing group and over-50s line dancing group, as well as an IT teacher for the IT drop-in group. Stoneham Bakehouse were awarded £500 to run further sessions of their fortnightly Bread Shed group for over55s, in which 25 people come together every two weeks to bake bread. Group members feel less isolated and form lasting friendships as well as finding new joy in baking.

They run a drop-in group every week in Hove for 25-30 people. They will receive £500 to ensure that they can continue to raise awareness of aphasia and organise day trips so that members can regain confidence in communicating in everyday situations. West Hove Forum meetings are attended by ward councillors and a wide range of community representatives. The next West Hove Forum meeting will be at 2pm on Wednesday 29th January 2020, venue to be confirmed. If you would like to attend on behalf of a group or business, please email westhoveforum@gmail.com. Stoneham Bakehouse’s Bread Shed group

A new exhibition at Hove Museum...

CULTURAL ICONS AT HOVE MUSEUM... 28 November 2019 to February 2020, Free admission, Hove Museum. An exhibition of contemporary British pottery featuring celebrities, royalty and politicians goes on display at Hove Museum this month. Commissioned as part of the British Ceramics Biennial 2019, the Cultural Icons show takes inspiration from the forms and subjects of a style of figurative ornament called Victorian Staffordshire flatbacks. This distinctive form emerged in the 1830s to meet public demand for objects that depicted iconic people and major events. Ceramic artists Joanne Ayre, Christie Brown, Claire Curneen, Stephen Dixon, Ingrid Murphy and Matt 37Smith have created updated versions of this Victorian art form. Their contemporary flatbacks designed to be displayed against a wall, usually on a mantelpiece, are about the cultural icons of today, current national debates, modes of spirituality and the design possibilities of new media. With a series of drawings and prints by John Hewitt, the new artworks sit alongside original Victorian portrait figures from the Royal Pavilion & Museums collections. Taking her cue from an 1841 figure of Victoria and the Princess Royal, artist Joanne Ayre, pregnant at the time, responded to the idea of motherhood. Her flatbacks
