So no snow yet this winter so far…well, at the time of writing anyway, which happens to be mid-January. Before winter started there was talk in the press of it being the coldest winter for many a long year, but so far we have been spared it seems. So what will you find in this month’s Directory to read? At least a few items of interest, we hope. We have an interesting interview with a local resident who featured in the New Year’s Honours list, as well as news on a unique community project, Stoneham Bakehouse. Plus there is lots more so read on… Here are some February dates to be aware of: 14th Valentine’s Day, 17th Shrove Tuesday, and not forgetting the Chinese New Year on the 19th!! Also congratulations are due to the winner of our Christmas competition. The winner of the Cinderella competition in December’s edition was Sylvia New. Well done, Sylvia, we hope you had a nice evening. Finally, we welcome your letters about local issues, so please send them in. Congratulations to West Hove resident Virginia Barnacle...

British Empire Medal for Paddle Round The Pier Co-Organiser Virginia Barnacle of St Keyna Avenue has been awarded a British Empire Medal (BEM) in the New Year’s Honours list. She was recognised for her voluntary work with Brighton Sailing Club, Brighton Surf Lifesaving Club and Paddle Round The Pier, which has raised hundreds of thousands of pounds for charity. How did you feel when you received the letter selling you about the award? I burst into tears. I couldn’t believe that I was receiving such a prestigious award for doing something that I enjoy so much. Tell us more about your voluntary work… I’ve been involved in Brighton Sailing Club for 20 years and was their first female Commodore. I became involved in Paddle Round the Pier in 2005 – the first year I was just a volunteer, then I took on more responsibility and now devote a lot of my free time to helping organise the whole event with David Samuel. In 2007, along with some friends, we decided that as Brighton was such a busy beach it really needed a Surf Life Saving Club to train Beach Life Guards and raise awareness of

the dangers of the sea. So we set one up! Our aim was always to have a children’s section – and we now train upwards of 80 children every Saturday in the sea. Have you always lived close to the sea? Yes! I’m Cornish so the sea is in my blood. This inspired me to set up Brighton Surf Life Saving Club, as every beach in Cornwall has such a club. There is nothing like being out on the sea, whether it’s sailing or on my Stand Up Paddle Board. What do you like about living in West Hove? Everything! I love being so close to the sea. The beaches are family orientated and peaceful. West Hove has a really good community spirit. It’s so much more tranquil than the bustle of Brighton. Is there anything you would like to change? That dogs are allowed on the beach all year. Less high-rise flats being built, as they don’t fit in with the architecture, and the proposed closure of St Leonard’s Church, as it really was the hub of the community. What have you got planned for your organisations in 2015? For both Brighton Sailing Club and Brighton Surf Life Saving Club – to expand our membership and educate more people about safety on the sea. For Paddle Round the Pier – to raise even more money for our charities. Each year we think of more exciting things to bring to the event and this year it will be even better! It’s very much a unique event that belongs to the city and we’d like more Brightonians to take part in it, whether it’s attending it or being one of our team of volunteers.

LOCAL review... Local to Poets’ Corner here is a food review featuring Curry Mahal...

Food Review - Curry Mahal The downside to returning home from living in Australia is, without wanting to state the obvious, the alarmingly cold weather. The upside is indulging in all those things the English do so well: sarcasm, orderly queueing, a cuppa to remedy any situation and the beloved curry, our national dish. Having been seriously deprived of the latter for many months, it was with hungry anticipation that I entered the cosiness of Curry Mahal on a particularly icy Sunday night. As a long-established, family-owned restaurant on Portland Road, Curry Mahal is perhaps somewhere you’re already familiar with? Maybe you’re a regular, with fail-safe menu favourites? For me, a newcomer, the ordering process involved deliberation; as a vegetarian, identifying suitable dishes can be a disheartening and lengthy chore, but at Curry Mahal my choices were endless. The patient waiter gave me some space to ponder the options, all the while keeping me topped up with moreish Indian snacks and a very decent house white wine, while my carnivorous companion decided on Lamb Satkora from the Unique Dishes section. It’s worth noting, for the adventurous amongst you, that many of these creations feature some surprising ingredients (the Grand Marnier present in the Komlapuriya Chicken is especially intriguing) and are exclusive to Curry Mahal, perfected

over many years by the head chef. The restaurant prides itself on using only the freshest and finest ingredients, in everything from Grade A chicken to mouth-watering authentic spices. The result? Tasty, filling curries, cooked just the way us Brits love them. WE LOVED: •

Bombay Mix served warm; a much-appreciated gesture on a cold night

Impeccable service; the staff were welcoming, polite and attentive, allowing us privacy for our own conversation without neglecting our needs

The inclusion of both alcoholic and non-alcoholic Cobra on the drinks list, enabling drinker and nondrinkers the pleasure of enjoying this premium beer with their curry

Don’t disappoint your date: book ahead for Valentine’s Day. Curry Mahal will be offering two sittings (7pm and 9pm) and you can be assured you won’t be squashed up to the next couple, as their usual comfortable seating layout will remain

Whilst the Appetiser menu is extensive, it’s wise to save your appetite for the main courses; after one Vegetable Ceylon curry, accompanied by Tarka Dhal, Saag Paneer and delightfully soft Peshwari Naan, I was unable to even contemplate dessert.

The pleasant waiters are happy to offer guidance on heat and spice; it’s advisable to take heed!

Not far away in Poets Corner something is happening...

Stoneham Bakehouse My name is Simon Cobb and I’m on a journey to set up a Community Supported Bakery in the heart of Poets’ Corner. The Stoneham Bakehouse will bake Real Bread for the community.

Peeling

Making light rye

It will put profits back into the project, so that everyone can benefit. Young or old, affluent or disadvantaged, we will bake with each other and bring the bread oven back to the centre of the community. 2015 is shaping up to be an exciting one for Stoneham Bakehouse. After a successful first market stall at Stoneham Park’s Christmas Market, we started baking on a Saturday morning using the oven at Pizzaface in Coleridge Street. The very kind people at Pizzaface continue to lend us their oven every other Saturday morning, allowing us to produce a batch of bread to sell

Seeded malthouse

to the local community. We’ve started selling the bread at the fabulous community café, the Hive, between 12 and 1pm on alternate Saturdays. As we are conscious not to create unnecessary food waste, we’ll be baking to order, with bread being picked up and paid for at the Hive Café in Stoneham Park. If you’re interested in buying bread from us then we’ll have an order form in the Hive, or you can email orders to us on orders@ stonehambakehouse.org.uk. We’ll be baking pain de campagne (sourdough), seeded malthouse and light rye loaves every time, with the occasional special loaf. The first bake in February will be on 7th February, with bakes being fortnightly from that point. The community aspect of the bakehouse also continues to develop through a project with Hove Junior School. With funding help from the local NHS Clinical Commissioning Group, we have created a series of workshops that will use breadmaking to support wellbeing amongst pupils and staff alike. We have also submitted a bid for local funding to enable us to provide bread and healthy food workshops to local nurseries and playgroups. Our journey towards a permanent home on Stoneham Road continues, with the process of submitting proposals happening in the next month or so. We already have a great group of baking volunteers, but as we grow we will undoubtedly need a larger pool of people to call upon. If you’re interested in joining us in any way - as a baker, or you have other skills to offer, or just want to be kept in the loop - then pop in to the Hive when we’re selling bread. Alternatively, look on our website: (www.stonehambakehouse.org.uk), like us on Facebook (www.facebook.com/stonehambakehouse), or follow us on Twitter (@stonehambake).

LOCAL group... The regular article from the Hove Civic Society....

Restoring our Victorian Street Tree Heritage It is hard to imagine what our streets in Hove would look like without the many trees lining them. Yet the stock suffers a continuous reduction through gales, old age, disease and even crossovers to accommodate cars. The replanting that does take place doesn’t keep up with the losses and doesn’t prepare for the time when the trees in many of our streets come to the end of their natural life. To help stem that tide a little, Hove Civic Society launched its campaign Restoring our Victorian Street Tree Heritage in 2012. The campaign works with local resident groups and the council to establish where street trees can be planted and supports local groups financially. Each tree costs £288 for the tree and the planting in the pavement. For each tree paid for by the campaign, the council matches this with another tree. The council expects a near unanimous agreement for planting in a street and local residents have to sign a form where they agree to have a tree planted outside their home. While Hove Civic Society tries to support planting as far as possible, there will inevitably have to

be some local fund-raising. This so far has taken different forms: the Marmion and Stoneham Road residents went door to door and managed to raise over £2,000 within 4 weeks, the residents in Bigwood Avenue raised funds through a street party.

The campaign works with local resident groups and the council to establish where street trees can be planted and supports local groups financially. It sounds a lot of work but the results make it all worthwhile. We have started to talk to possible contenders for 2015 and have several potential schemes which need to be assessed to see whether they are technically possible. One suggestion involves Portland Road, as suggested by the West Hove Forum. The Society funds their contributions through regular donations from Tree Angels. If you want to join our tree angels to help us make all this possible, then please download a donors form from our website www.hovecivic.org, click on ‘street tree campaign’ and follow the link. Let us know if you are interested in planting in your street. See contact details on our website.

Regular article about local exercise opportunities by West Hove resident Isobel Muir...

Treadmill v the great outdoors Winter is well and truly upon us and with it the possibility of weather of such inclemency that running outdoors becomes (almost) an impossibility, or at least a pursuit that can in no way be termed “running”. Just remember those weeks through the middle of January. The wind was so strong as to make running a combination of flying, grinding to a halt and kicking oneself in the leg as 40mph gusts thrashed the seafront. The more gutsy of my running companions were undeterred by the wind and bagged up their determination and set out anyway. I however wimped out and decided to try a half marathon pace treadmill run instead. This turned out to be hellish in its own way. I set the treadmill to 2% incline to more closely mimic outdoors running (I don’t know why this is, but running magazines always tell you to do this) and 13.5kmph (7.09 minute miling for a sub 1hr 35 half marathon). The beauty of the treadmill is of course that you are forced to run at the speed you have set, yet this is also a problem as my natural pacing is very inconsistent. On the treadmill this translates into alternately running into the front of the machine then nearly falling off the back. Good for spectators, I’d imagine. Thankfully my gym has an hour limit on the treadmill so I was forced to stop at 8 miles.

THE LOGMAN

I can safely say that in my case outdoor running will always be my preference. I don’t like having to run at a prescribed pace and find that my running form on the treadmill is not as good as outside, maybe because of the pace being enforced so I’m never really relaxed? The lack of wind resistance makes it a very sweaty experience and not actually getting anywhere seems to make time drag. However I can also see how the very things I don’t like would be plus points for others (perhaps not the time dragging part…or the sweat…). Also you are not buffeted by hurricanesque squalls, attacked by dogs, heckled by youths or surprised by waves crashing over Shoreham arm into your face (though this is good exfoliation, I’m sure). Conversely you never have the joy of running through forest glades, over the downs, or along the seafront. Give me the outdoors any day (except that one).

LOCAL gardening... Here is our monthly gardening feature written by Nareesa Sulaiman, a local garden designer...

In the garden... February 2015 The first signs of spring are beginning to appear in our gardens; the brightly coloured stems of the dogwoods, along with the yellow-flowering winter jasmine, create a backdrop to the clean white of the first snowdrops. February is a good month to clean and sharpen tools in preparation for the coming seasons. It is surprising how easy it is to sharpen small tools and what a difference it makes to their ease of use; it also saves you money in the long run as the tools last much longer. I have a set of sharpening stones, a box of fine grade steel wool and a small tin of gun & rifle oil, purchased online for under ÂŁ20 for the lot, and which are now in their fifth year of use. Start by wiping away any dirt and grime. Use a small pad of steel wool to remove rust by working the wool in small circles all over the metal parts of the tool apart from along the cutting edge. If there is a blade or cutting edge that needs to be sharpened, select an appropriate sharpening stone. Sharpening stones come in a variety of sizes; some you fix on a surface/work bench and push the blade along them, whereas others are smaller and you hold the blade still and push the stone along the blade. For most tools, the sharp edge is angled. If

Helleborus orientalis – photo by Dominicus Bergsma using a fixed stone, angle the blade at an appropriate angle then push the blade along the stone. For smaller, handheld stones, angle the stone along the cutting edge then, WITH CARE, use sweeping strokes away from the body to sharpen the edge. Use an oily cloth to wipe over metal parts of the tool and add a few drops of oil to any moveable parts. There are some helpful short videos on YouTube that demonstrate this tool-sharpening process. Helleborus orientalis After the long winter months, the colourful buds of the hellebore look like jewels before they open to reveal their simple, beautiful flowers. Remove old leaves from the hellebore to allow the new leaves to come through and to show the flowers off at their best. Great places to visit Pembury House Garden in Clayton, West Sussex, has an amazing collection of snowdrops and hellebores. They will be open as part of the National Garden Scheme on 10-12th, 17-19th Feb plus 2nd, 5-6th March. www.pemburyhouse.co.uk Happy Gardening! Nareesa

Local ATTRACTION.. The latest article written and sent in for us by Caan Wells

A tRuly great kitchen - Brighton Pavilion The Great Kitchen was one of the first areas of the Royal Pavilion to be completed in 1816 as part of John Nash’s reconstruction. It was also one of the most advanced kitchens of its day and contains some very interesting objects. Perhaps the first thing you notice is the huge number of pots, pans, jelly moulds and other utensils which line the walls. The copperware, or batterie de cuisine, in the Great Kitchen is one collection which sticks in the mind. The collection is so well loved it is always on view in the Great Kitchen. Yet most of it is in fact not original to the Royal Pavilion. Many of the items were formerly used in the kitchen of the Duke of Wellington’s London residence, Apsley House, now the Wellington Museum. They are on loan from the Trustees of the Museum of London. The Great Kitchen was a masterpiece in modern engineering, featuring a smoke jack, a device with a rotary vane in the chimney which was turned by the hot air rising from the fire, which then turned the spit. It also featured the latest in steam heating technology with a steam-heated table supplied by William Slark of London, a constant supply of water pumped from a nearby well into the Royal Pavilion’s own water tower, and an impressive ventilation and illumination system of 12 high windows. The Great Kitchen, like so many other rooms in the Royal Pavilion, was not without its own ‘taste of the Orient’. Four cast-iron columns, ornamented with painted copper palm leaves, support the ceiling. A kitchen so close to the Banqueting Room was unusual for the day. It gave George IV the opportunity to impress his guests with his new facilities and he often escorted his guests around the Great Kitchen as part of his tour of the state apartments. The Great Kitchen is a favourite of designer Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen who claimed that ‘one of the first show kitchens was also the showiest of kitchens’. Much like the rest of the Royal Pavilion, the Great Kitchen has an intriguing history and was even used as an operating theatre when the Royal Pavilion became

Carers reablement elcome to the service bruary edition of veways Gardens

There are more than 24,000 carers in Brighton – around 9% of the city’s population. One in five of them do more than 50 hours of unpaid care work every week. The Carers Centre for Brighton and Hove provides information, support and advocacy to carers.

We have started a new project that will support carers to learn new skills or achieve other goals. The Carers Reablement Service is a pilot scheme designed to support carers to achieve positive changes in their lives. This will be done with the assistance of volunteers, who will help the carer to reach a clearly-defined outcome in periodnot of up ten weeks. willnot aimgive to it od, and amaybe soto much moneyThese to go outcomes round, why improve wellbeing of thesome carer in some way. nd to plant into?the Well, how about carefully chosen nice r, get rid of some of that tired looking concrete or paving slabs Examples of these ten-week goals may include learning to use a computer, starting going to the gym, drawing up and In beginning a weight-loss acquiring basic g in them. about late June/July,plan, you’llorfind a lovely crop cooking or car repair skills. Local Business... Here is a business feature that may be useful...

LOOK UP! AND GET MORE SPACE aT HOME FOR JUST £325 We’d all like more room at home. But not everyone can afford to move or extend. So what if there was a way to get extra space for just a few hundred pounds, ready to use in less than a day? In truth, that space is already there. It’s just not being used to its full potential. For most, the loft is a dark and dingy place visited on rare occasions; a precarious scramble across dusty beams with torch in hand, grabbing what’s needed then clambering back past boxes filled with long-forgotten belongings. But that dark and dingy place is worth thousands. In fact, it takes up a third of the floorspace in an average home. So shouldn’t we be making the most of it And that’s where More Than Loft Ladders (MTLL) comes in. Founded in Bolton six years ago, MTLL specialises in generating space by making our lofts easily accessible. The latest MTLL franchise is based in Brighton and is run by skilled local Patrick Aherne who says the company’s no-frills approach is what most people are looking for. “We’re not selling £15,000 loft conversions,” says Patrick. “This is a low-cost and simple alternative. For just £277 + VAT you can get a ladder that slides easily up and down, as well as a proper light and some boarding to make the space safe and secure. We can also fit a draft-proof loft hatch if required from only £55.”

The price customers are quoted is the price they will pay, with no additional call-out charges. Patrick provides a free guarantee on all parts and labour too. For a free survey and quotation with no obligation, contact More Than Loft Ladders now! Call 0800 035 9880 or visit the website at: www.morethanloftladders.co.uk
