We love to meet local people. Meet Sue Milner from St Leonard’s Avenue...

WEST HOVE

LOCAL PERSON - SUE MILNER Sue Milner lives in St Leonard’s Avenue and makes cushions with Vintage Textiles. In the 70s and 80s she had a successful career in London as a fashion stylist, when Mary Portas was one of her team! Where did you grow up? Until I was 17 I lived in Westbourne Gardens and in Portland Road. Tell us more about your time as a fashion stylist... I started work as a window dresser at Dorothy Norman, a ladies’ fashion store on the corner of Western Road, pre Churchill Square, at 15 years old. I soon realised 5 that London was the place to be for a career in fashion. Within a year I was commuting to London and living there by 17. I worked as a window dresser at various fashion stores in London before graduating to styling for fashion shows at Harrods, Harvey Nichols and many others. Along the way I met and worked with many famous faces. I worked on a photo shoot with David Bailey. He was photographing Joan Collins, then in Dynasty on TV. A window display mannequin had been made of her and the shoot was to promote that. She was wearing dresses designed by the Emanuels, the couple who designed

Princess Diana’s wedding dress. The best was yet to come though. I was asked to work on fashion exhibitions at the Victoria and Albert Museum. I was in the privileged position of seeing the collections not on public view. I worked closely with the museum’s photographer on some of the beautiful fashion books the museum produced. Happy days! Why did you come back to West Hove? Although I had an interesting and absorbing career I always missed Brighton and living by the sea. Is there anything about the area you would like to change? I am horrified about the amount of food that is wasted when people are going hungry. I would like to see a concerted effort by local supermarkets and shops to save past sell-by date food and distribute it to appropriate centres where it will be used.

What are you working on at the moment? I am passionate about textiles, especially vintage ones. I search them out wherever I go and make them into cushions. I am busy preparing for the Artists Open Houses in May. I will be exhibiting my work at Studio Loo on Portland Road. Hope to see you there! Thank you! WHD February 2016

Welcome to the new Hove Seafront Residents’ Association...

HOVE SEAFRONT RESIDENTS’ ASSOCIATION The Hove Seafront Residents’ Association has been set up to give people living in the area a voice on issues that affect them. One of the main reasons for the group is to ensure that new developments, such as the proposed ‘Sackville Tower’, are designed with the local community in mind. We have only known about the plans since November and already nearly 400 people have joined our No campaign on Facebook. This development will affect people living in the 9 immediate vicinity, whose houses and flats will be dwarfed and overlooked. It will also have a serious impact on light, casting a shadow over those homes and gardens. But it is not just residents of Sackville Gardens who are opposed to the tower - people from across Brighton and Hove have told us how worried they are. There are concerns about the tower’s impact on the local community, that the apartments will be expensive and that the scheme will be bought up mainly by property speculators from abroad. This ‘buy to leave’ culture has been widely reported in London. We do not want it in Hove. We need thousands of new homes in the city, but are high rise buildings the answer? It has been possible to achieve high-density housing without building tall in all the major cities of Europe, surely this must even hold true in Hove. Other, much more modest, designs for this site have been rejected on the grounds that they are too bulky or do not improve the area. The council’s own planning guidance on tall buildings is based on a detailed independent study which categorically excludes the Sackville Gardens conservation area as a zone suitable for a high rise.

The site of the proposed Sackville Tower

We want something to be built on this site. We would be fully behind a proposal of suitable height and design, something that enhances the area both architecturally and in terms of the community. We question whether this giant cylinder - which will loom over us and stick out like a sore thumb - is the legacy we want to leave to future generations living in Hove. We have invited the developers Hyde Housing and Yelo architects to join us at a public meeting to discuss the plans, but at the time of going to print, they have yet to agree. Please get in touch by becoming members on Facebook No To Sackville Tower and Hove Seafront Residents Association, via Twitter on @HOVESEAFRONT or email us at notosackvilletower@gmail.com. If you are yet to get started on your path to a healthier, happier and more fulfilling 2016 there’s still plenty of time! Why not start gently with a spot of volunteering at one of the ever present parkruns (Hove Prom, Hove Park or Preston Park)? As someone who has volunteered at and runs hundreds of parkruns (258 runs and 80 credited volunteers at time of writing) since the first one started in Hove Park in 2007, I have plenty of experience from both sides. As parkrun has gone from strength to strength since its inception 10 years ago, never more has the job of the volunteers been more important. So what can you do? The answer is pretty much anything! Ease yourself in gently by starting off as a general marshal, standing on the course directing runners or simply giving them a word or two of encouragement as they pass by. If time is really tight you could just help set up or dismantle the course, putting out cones, high vis bollard covers, fashioning the start area and finish funnel are amongst the things you could be doing. Plenty of brave folk are needed for the finish line with times to take, finishing tokens to give out, funnels to manage, cross checking to be done, scanning, the jobs go on. However all the jobs are easy to learn and you need only do what you are comfortable with. I generally stick to helping set up as I’m always early or running then scanning so I have got my run in and been helpful. Volunteers are rewarded after 25 goes with a free t-shirt

Here is our monthly gardening feature written by Nareesa Sulaiman, a local garden designer...

WEST HOVE

IN THE GARDEN... FEBRUARY 2016 Tired of being indoors? If weather permits, there’s lots to do outside to prepare for the year ahead… Begin by having a walk round the garden, however big or small. Take note of what is looking good and what needs attention. The weather has been so mild that it is surprising how much is already in flower. This is the month to cut back any perennials or grasses that were left through the winter for their interesting leaves or seedheads. Cut low to the ground but leave a short stem so that you know their location when adding new plants. Clear fallen leaves and twigs from the soil. If the13 soil is not too waterlogged, turn the soil with a hand fork, breaking up clumps and removing any weeds. This will add air to the soil and help improve the soil texture. If you have a large bed to work through, you may be better using a garden fork but only do this if the soil is not too wet; walking on wet soil will cause it to become compacted, reducing the air it contains and damaging the soil structure. This is a good time to prune summer-flowering deciduous shrubs as it is easier to see their shape when the

Hamamelis x intermedia ‘Jelena’ (witch hazel)

leaves are absent. Look at the shrub from several angles before you start pruning. Decide on the overall height and shape that you would like to achieve and try to keep this in mind as you work, pausing often to check your progress; shrub pruning can be very cathartic and you wouldn’t be the first person to get carried away and end up with a plant that is half of the planned height! If you can’t get outside, salad leaves, spinach and marigolds can be planted indoors and left to germinate on a windowsill. Hamamelis x intermedia ‘Jelena’ I saw this in a small courtyard garden the other day. This shrub has a lovely open shape, the burnt-orange flowers glow with their own light and the smell is amazing. Great places to visit The Old Vicarage, Washington, West Sussex As part of the National Garden Scheme, The Old Vicarage is open on Sunday 28th February, admission £4.50. The snowdrops may well be over by the end of the month but I love looking at gardens that are based around old properties and apparently there’s a new Zen garden with waterfall. Happy gardening! West Hove home owner David Walliams and his Gangsta Granny are in town...

GANGSTA GRANNY COMES TO TOWN The world premiere of Gangsta Granny is coming to the Theatre Royal Brighton. It is based on the book by the UK’s best-selling children’s author, David Walliams, who has a house in West Hove. The production runs from 2nd to 6th March. It’s Friday night and Ben knows that means only one thing - staying with Granny! There will be cabbage soup, cabbage pie and cabbage cake and Ben knows one thing for sure - it’s going to be sooooooooo boring! But what Ben doesn’t know is that Granny has a secret - and Friday nights are about to get more exciting than he could possibly imagine, as he embarks on the adventure of a lifetime with his very own Gangsta Granny! 15 “When I was a child I would spend lots of time with my grandmas,” says David Walliams. “Sometimes I would selfishly think spending time with them could be boring but when I got them on a subject like living in London during World War II when bombs were raining down, they would become very animated and I would be enthralled. I realised everyone has a story to tell.” David’s own childhood writing hero is Roald Dahl. He says: “I think Dahl’s books always feel a little bit forbidden. He manages to balance the humour and scary ele-

ments in his stories perfectly. My favourite is The Twits which is utterly hilarious.” The moral of Gangsta Granny, says David, is: “Don’t assume old people are boring just because they are old. They are likely to have had a much more interesting life than yours. Listen to their stories. They are bound to be full of magic and wonder.” You can book tickets for Gangsta Granny at atgtickets. com/brighton or phone 0844 871 7650.

Don’t leave it too late to have your say on Hove Library’s future...

HAVE YOUR SAY ON HOVE LIBRARY If you haven’t yet had your say on the proposal to move Hove Library into Hove Museum, the public consultation on the city’s library services is open until 16th February. The current library in Church Road is a Grade 2 listed building which is expensive to run and is in need of £0.75 million repairs over the next five years. Brighton & Hove’s library service also needs to save £1.34 million in the next four years as a result of reductions in funding to local councils from central government. The proposal is to sell the current library building and create a new community cultural centre for Hove, bringing together library and museum services on the19 site of the current museum in New Church Road. The publicly accessible space on the ground floor of the museum would be doubled, with the old extension being replaced by a new purpose-built extension. The museum galleries HOVE MUSEUM & LIBRARY on the first floor would remain. The library space would Aerial View (North / East) - As Proposed be about 15% smaller than at the current Hove Library. At a public meeting in January at Hove Museum, Sally McMahon, the council’s Head of Libraries, said that the number of staff would be reduced, but this would be through voluntary redundancies and volunteers would not be used to do staff jobs. She would like the com-

munity to make more use of the resources and building, with increased activities for children. Julia Basnett, Development and Operations Manager at Hove Museum, said that she would like Hove Museum to be a cultural centre for the area and having the library there would make this much easier. Labour Westbourne Councillor Tom Bewick said he plans to vote for the scheme, as the council needs to balance the books and he is passionate about library services. He lives across the road from Hove Museum and wants it opened up as a seven-day-a-week cultural hub. Conservative Westbourne Councillor Denise Cobb had several concerns about the proposal, including the loss of the only green space in Westbourne ward at Hove Museum, and she believes the council is selling off too many assets. She would like the current Carnegie library building to be kept by the council. The libraries consultation also asks for people’s views on changing the way library services are delivered across the city. The changes include opening up access to libraries seven days a week, with a mix of staffed and unstaffed days. The final decisions will be taken in March, by the Economic Development and Culture Committee. You can take part in the consultation at: www.brighton-hove.gov.uk/library-services-survey. Alternatively, you can complete a paper survey at the library. N.B. Copy deadline for the March edition of The West Hove Directory is 15th February WHD February 2016

Meet the man in charge of your local PCSOs.......

NEIGHBOURHOOD POLICING TEAM INSPECTOR – PAUL RANSOME How long have you been with Sussex Police? This is my 20th year as a Sussex police officer. I have served in most parts of the county and came to Brighton four years ago. I am in charge of Hove and East Brighton Neighbourhood Policing Teams which consist of supervisors and a number of Police Community Support Officers who are responsible for your area. What is the best part of your job?

21

Quite simply, the people. I have been lucky enough to work with some excellent officers and police staff over my career. You need a sense of humour to do this job and an ability to deal with almost anything. I have met some superb examples of public spirited people over the years too and continue to do so within my role in Brighton. I have also met a number of non-public spirited people who continue to impact on the lives of others; my job is to stop them.

Earn up to £1000 per week with a Renubath Franchise

What are the challenges that you face? Policing has changed and in order for us to look after the public we must change with it. Police and the public can all remember ‘the good old days’ or were they? We must prioritise our work based on threat, harm, risk and vulnerability and can’t continue to do the ‘nice to do’ things. We have to get the most out of every officer and work efficiently to ensure we make a difference to people’s lives and keep them safe. We cannot always get it right but we should do what is important well. What are your interests outside work? Sadly my football career is coming to an end and I have recently taken up football refereeing. I am kicking myself for waiting so long as I thoroughly enjoy it. How can we help you in your work?

This is the really important bit; the simple answer is support us by calling in suspicious activity or provide evidence so that we can deal properly with suspects and offenders. I am a big believer in positive action whether via diversion schemes or court, but I am frustrated when we don’t have the evidence to prosecute. Please help us to make Brighton a better place to live and work. How can we contact you? Sussex Police can be contacted on 101 (non emergency) or 999 (emergency) or visit www.sussex.police.uk to report incidents on-line. I can be contacted via email : paul.ransome@sussex.pnn.police.uk

Advice from local physiotherapist Martina Bisping......

MAKE GOOD USE OF THE LAST FOUR WEEKS BEFORE THE BRIGHTON HALF MARATHON Don’t ignore lingering niggles or just put up with muscle tightness. • If the IT (illiotibial) band in the outside of your thigh is too tight, this could cause knee pain and so you should massage it with a foam roller and stretch it. • Treat tight and short calves, hip flexors, hamstrings and quadriceps with self-massage and stretching. • If you experience severe pain whilst running, rest for 2-3 days and seek help if you are not improving. 25 Keep up your strengthening exercises for your trunk muscles. • Whatever core exercises you’re doing, keep doing them. • Remember that strong core and hip muscles will help prevent lower limb running injuries and help you maintain pace.

Don’t over-train: • At least two weeks before the race, do the longest run of your training programme (9-11 miles for a

first timer, about 13-16 miles for a seasoned runner) and then wind your training down to ensure you are rested and fully recovered by race day. • In the coming weeks you might also think about replacing some of your running units with cross-training if your legs don’t recover well. A cross trainer in a gym works fine but some people prefer swimming, as swimming gives the joints a complete rest from the pounding of intensive running.

Nathalie’s Monthly Health TIP

SKIN – GLORIOUS SKIN You may view your skin only as a reflection in the mirror, something to be worried about occasionally when spots appear or the glow fades? Did you know that your skin is actually the largest organ of elimination of your body? Believe it or not, we’re meant to be shedding nearly ½ a kilo of waste through our skin DAILY – mainly through sweat. Skin brushing: So, to increase elimination through the skin, particularly if you’re not sweating very often (which could be a sign of dehydration and/or not enough exercise…), get 29a longhandled brush from your chemist (with natural bristles), and start body brushing daily. This will not only help stimulate skin elimination but it will also brush away dead skin cells and stimulate the lymphatic system just beneath the skin, for deeper cleansing. This is how to do it: • Before your morning shower: in sweeping movements, dry brush gently but energetically from the toes upwards towards your heart, front and back of your body, everywhere except your face.

• This should take about 5 minutes and should be followed with a hot/cold shower to further stimulate movement: take a normal shower then end with 20 seconds hot, then very cold, then hot again and finish with 20 seconds very cold. …And watch that glow re-appear!
