HAPPY NEW YEAR WEST HOVE! Here is your January edition We trust you had a lovely Christmas and we would like to wish you all a very happy and prosperous New Year! Due to printers being closed over Christmas, I am actually wishing you that well before the festivities have even started so it does feel a little strange. That said, New Year is a great time to reflect on the year just gone and make plans for the up-and-coming 12 months, so write down where you want to be this time next year and stick it to the fridge and see how close you can get! In the meantime we have no radical changes to the magazine this month, just the usual mix of local items. We are however formulating plans to freshen the publication up this year both in terms of how it looks as well as content. If you get this edition through your door before New Year’s Eve, have a great celebration; if you get it afterwards we hope you have recovered! Here’s to a great 2015!! LELLIOTT’S NURSERIES These formerly stood north of New Church Road, just about on the site of the present Amesbury Crescent. The house, which was built about 1870, was approximately 60 yards back from the road and it was approached by a rough cinder track which ran from New Church Road to Portland Road. The nurseries were to the south and west of the house. The photograph was taken during the 1920s. When the land was sold for building, the nurseries were given up and the house demolished, about 1930.

LOCAL group... News from the latest meeting of the West Hove Forum...
Healthy Neighbourhood Fund Grants Still Available The West Hove Forum has recently allocated grants to several local groups. The Secret Garden Group were given £500, as were the Wish Park Residents Association for their vegetable garden, and Plot 22, who host activities on an allotment site in Weald Avenue. The Ingram Crescent Disability Christmas Party was granted £285. There is still £1,515 in the Healthy Neighbourhood Fund kitty. If you belong to a small community group which is based in the West Hove area and has health and wellbeing benefits for local people, you can apply for a grant. The funding criteria include: 1. Improving diet and nutrition and helping to reduce obesity 2. Increasing exercise 3. Improving mental health. For an application form, please email us at westhoveforum@gmail.com . The deadline for completed applications is 14th January 2015. At our last meeting in the Salvation Army Hall in Sackville Road, the police reported that there had been an increase in vehicle crime around Wish. Due to a resident’s diligence, however, two people were arrested who were suspected to be connected with the increase in vehicle crime in October. Since then, vehicle crime has dropped. Cllr Anne Pissaridou asked whether there was anything the police could do about the large number of cars for sale on Portland Road. PCSO Darren Penter said that, unfortunately, as the vehicles all have different registered owners and the mobile phone numbers on the cars are all different, there’s not much the police can do at this time. Trading Standards are now looking into it.Cllr Garry Peltzer Dunn was concerned that paper tax discs are no longer in use, as this was in the past a very good guide for residents to see if a car was taxed. PCSO Penter said that anyone can check the Government website to see whether a vehicle is taxed: https://www.gov.uk/check-vehicle-tax. Robert Nemeth (Treasurer of the Secret Garden Group) even

Anti-social behaviour in Boundary Road 2. Burglary 3. Cycle safety. The next West Hove Forum meeting will be on 21st January 2015 (venue and time to be confirmed). A GLANCE AT THE PAST AND A LOOK TO THE FUTURE
SUPPORT RENEWABLE ENERGY SOURCES We need energy to live – electricity, petrol, diesel, gas. Most of it comes from abroad, so its price is beyond our control.

The more we can generate for ourselves, the better for our pocket and peace of mind. This article mentions some of the projects which will keep our lights on and our radiators hot in future. The Rampion offshore wind farm will generate as much power annually as Shoreham Power Station from 2017, but it will be carbon free. Many buildings in the harbour already have solar panels on their roofs. A consultation was held last October on two wind turbines near the eastern breakwater to supply the pump house. From 2017, Shoreham Power Station will generate by burning gas only when the wind doesn’t blow and the sun doesn’t shine, saving carbon emissions and reducing climate change. A new power station (Edgeley Green) will be built next to it which will burn waste oil, and sell its waste heat to local buildings by district heating. Many local homes (like the picture of 22 Saxon Road) now have solar panels on their roofs, which give a good return on the investment through the Feed-in Tariff. Hove Civic Society exists to protect the environment, so supports renewable energy projects like those mentioned above. We also promote projects like planting street trees, and creating a plinth on the seafront for statues. We hold lectures every month on Thursdays at The Courtlands Hotel, The Drive, Hove. They continue every month until next spring, when we have visits to interesting sites, such as the Newhaven incinerator, which generates enough electricity for 25,000 homes by burning rubbish. We are looking for new members, particularly those who would like to work with us on committee or subcommittees, which include street trees, plinth, infrastructure and social. Please look at our website: www.hovecivicsociety.org , or call me, John Kapp, secretary, on: 01273 417997 or email me on: johnkapp@btinternet.com.

LOCAL gardening... Here is our monthly gardening feature written by Nareesa Sulaiman, a local garden designer...
In the garden... January 2015 Happy New Year! After the excesses of the festive period, you may be craving some fresh air and exercise. Even though it can look cold and wet out there, if you are up for it, here a few jobs that can be done around the garden... Pruning This is a good time to prune deciduous hedges, shrubs and fruit bushes as it is easier to see the framework when the leaves have fallen away. Use a sharp pair of shears or loppers to make clean diagonal cuts that slope away from the junction with the next branch; this ensures that rainwater doesn’t run back towards the junction and cause rotting. Cut close to the junction with the next branch, but not so close that it causes damage to the remaining branch. If you have space, save some branch cuttings for use as plant supports in the summer months. Soil improvement If the ground is not frozen or too wet, soil can be improved by digging in some manure or home-made compost. Impoverished soil means that plants struggle to flourish. Adding organic matter such as well-rotted manure improves the soil structure and increases water-
Sarcococca confusa holding capacity and water drainage. It also adds nutrients for the plants and soil organisms to enjoy. Organic matter can be laid on the top of the soil and incorporated into the soil by turning over with a fork. Even if the ground is frozen, spread the manure on the top of the soil and leave, allowing nature to do the work. Planting If you are thinking about introducing a new deciduous hedge into your garden, January is a good month as long as the ground is not frozen. The cheapest way to buy hedging is as bare-root young plants, called whips. Prepare the ground by creating a trench, two spades width and a spade depth. Add well-rotted manure to half fill the trench then refill with the removed, now brokenup soil. Insert the whips at regular intervals along the length of the trench and firm in with your heel. The hedge suppliers usually recommend planting distances. If necessary, protect the young plants from wind damage by creating a wind break, from plastic mesh or recycled bubble-wrap. Feature plant for January Sarcococca confusa This evergreen shrub has small flowers in winter which are hardly visible but have an amazing fragrance. Plant close to the back door in the ground or a pot and you will enjoy the wonderful fragrance whenever you open the back door! Happy Gardening! Nareesa

Regular article about local exercise opportunities by West Hove resident Isobel Muir...
New Year, New You! I can’t believe it is 2015! How the heck did that happen? It’s that time again where we are all enthusiastic and motivated to start afresh and get stuck into all the things we failed to do last year. As my birthday is the 1st of January it is even more motivational and this year I am going to try and give road racing a good go after stalling a bit over the last year. In preparation for this new lease of running life, I decided it was time to have another Body Composition Analysis done. I last did this in late 2008 when I had only been running for a few months, so thought it would be excellent to do it again now, so I would have definitive proof of the physical health benefits running and exercise provide. Rachel Love from Body Optimum came to my house armed with scales, blood pressure cuff and electrodes ready to conduct the analysis. The actual BIA (Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis) is carried out by an electrical current being passed through your body via electrodes stuck to your right hand and ankle as you lie on the floor. It doesn’t hurt! The results are immediately sent to Rachel’s laptop. She discusses these with you and asks a few questions about your eating habits and activ-

ity levels to give you advice on improvements you could make. She will email the results to you along with her advice so you can get started on improving your health. Every aspect of the analysis is explained so you know exactly what you are looking at and which parts of yourself could do with a little tweak. For example I discovered I am too watery so I now know I can drink less and still be perfectly well hydrated. Having BIA is an excellent way to kick off a health and fitness plan as it gives you something tangible to measure yourself against in the future, so you can see exactly how far you have come. I was pleased to discover everything is moving in the right direction, with decreases in my overall weight, body fat percentage and BMI. A definite boost to my morale as I look forward to the year ahead!
For more details about my life in exercise please visit my blog “IMFitHove”. Thanks. Happy exercising! isobelmuir@hotmail.com

LOCAL PROJECT... Here is the latest project being run by Barnados...
Could you make a difference to a young person’s life in your own home? Brighton & Hove Supported Lodgings is looking for individuals or families to provide lodgings and support for vulnerable young people aged 16 to 21. All you need is a spare room and some free time to offer advice and support in your own home. Could you support a young person who is at risk of becoming homeless? This is a new project, run by Barnardo’s but where YOU make the difference. The young people will need help with basic skills such as budgeting, cooking and shopping. They may also need help in gaining personal or social skills, training or employment. Every young person will also have the support of a key worker to assist them to achieve their full potential and move forward. A host can make a huge difference to the life of a vulnerable young person. As a host you will benefit from 24/7 assistance and a dedicated key worker. Barnardo’s staff will need to carry out a thorough assessment, DBS (criminal record) and reference checks. Successful hosts then access a comprehensive training programme, as well as receiving an allowance of £150 per week for providing lodgings and support for the young person. Supported Lodgings provides young people with a different option when faced with nowhere to go. It is an opportunity to provide a warm, welcoming home environment and a chance for a young person to get their life back on track. Similar projects have been established around the country and proved very successful, particularly in helping young people to gain skills, education or work experience. 21 Another great local campaign...
Handbags under the Hammer WANTED: Handbags, Hats & Heels! The Martlets Hospice is asking women from Brighton & Hove to dig out their unwanted handbags for a fabulous new charity auction event. The Hove-based charity is hosting its first ‘Handbags, Hats & Heels’ sale and auction of all styles of handbags, hats and shoes at the Sussex County Cricket Club in February. There will be items and prices to suit all purses, with sealed bids, items for sale and a luxury raffle. The money raised through the sale and auction will go towards the Martlets’ work caring for adults living in and around Brighton & Hove who are affected by terminal illness. Handbag donations can be made at any of the Martlets’ shops in and around the city, the hospice in Wayfield Avenue, the furniture warehouse on Hove Business Park and through special donation boxes around Brighton. Antonia Shepherd, Events Manager for the Martlets, said: “It’s not just pre-loved bags we are after; if any local fashion stores wish to make a donation, we’d be really grateful – or if any local business can spare space for a collection box, that would be really helpful too.”
The event itself takes place on Wednesday 11 February, with an afternoon auction between 2.30 – 5pm. There is also an evening auction 6.30 – 9pm. Tickets cost £5.00 for the afternoon and £7.50 for the evening auction, and include a complimentary cup of tea or glass of wine respectively. To book your tickets, please call: 01273 964200, or you can book online at: www.themartlets.org.uk/handbags.
Locality Project For 55+ Age Group If you are over 55 and would like to volunteer with a well-supported project, helping the less able mature people in West Hove to get around and attend groups and events to ease their social isolation, contact STEVE ANDREWS on 01273 676416 or 07480 113773. Steve is a Community Participation / Development Worker for the Trust for Developing Communities and is seeking to link groups catering for the 55+ age group with one another to share resources and ideas. The Locality Project, as it is called, is proving successful and has enabled groups in Hove to visit a ‘secret’ cinema in Coldean and for several neighbourhoods to be included in an ambitious programme of outings. There are also plans afoot to create older people’s advisory and steering groups in a number of neighbourhoods. steveandrews@trustdevcom.org.uk
