WEST HOVE
HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL WEST HOVE RESIDENTS! We hope you had a relaxing Christmas and are looking forward to the new decade. We have details of how you can get your Christmas tree collected for a small donation to charity. Isobel Muir has advice on getting back into shape after all the excesses of the festive season. We also have an article from Al-Anon, who run support groups for anyone affected by someone else’s drinking. They have recently started a Hove group at St Philip’s Church. If you’d like to welcome the new year Chinese-style, Asiana in Portland Road will be celebrating with a lion dance on 26th January. We wish you a very happy new year! Meet a prize-winning local writer who also leads workshops at the Tree of Life Centre...
LOCAL AUTHOR...SANDRA JENSEN Sandra Jensen lives in Richardson Road. Her novel “Seagull Pie” recently won the Peggy Chapman-Andrews Award at this year’s Bridport Prize. The competition is judged on the first 30,000 words of a complete or partially complete novel. How long have you lived in West Hove? About six years. I’ve been moving around all my life, and actually have three passports! South African, Canadian and British. Tell us about “Seagull Pie”... The story, which I’m still working on, is based on my time as a teenager in the 70s when my mother, a famous South African sculptor, was invited to start a craft centre in Donegal. Essentially it’s about Samantha, a girl who’d like her family to be the Waltons and her boyfriend Alexander the Great. Instead, her father is dead, her mother wields oxyacetylene torches, her older brother makes bombs and her grandmother, very deaf and very disappointed, isn’t exactly the comforting sort. And, Samantha’s never been kissed, let alone had a boyfriend. Life has been one unfortunate experience after the other, including attending five schools where she learned little more than the cruel nature of

teachers and fellow pupils. In Ireland, Samantha concocts a plan to avoid school and prove she’s as tough and smart as her mother: she’ll teach herself O Levels. She hopes Donegal will be the home she longs for and that she’ll find her Alexander amongst the Celts. But chaos reigns from the beginning… You also lead writing workshops locally... I teach once a month at the Tree of Life Centre on Portland Road. It’s particularly beneficial for anyone who has a personal ‘story’ to tell but doesn’t know how to begin. Details on the Tree of Life website (tolcentre.com/writingworkshop). What else are you working on? Mainly I need to finish Seagull Pie, but I’ve just completed a novel set in Sri Lanka during the civil war. Another project I’m planning is a ‘novella-in-flash’ – short, linked pieces exploring events told from a mother’s point of view and also that of her daughter (myself) uncovering her past and navigating the unexpected depth of her grief when her mother dies.

What do you do in your spare time? I admit to binge-watching shows like The Handmaid’s Tale, The Night Manager and Killing Eve. I’m also involved in animal rescue in Bosnia Herzegovina, all done via Facebook - a rather dangerous ‘hobby’ for a writer: it’s easier to go online and help save a dog than to face the blank page… For more information about Sandra, see her website: www sandrajensen.net

West Hove resident Lindsey Tydeman has sent us another great image from The Keep archive centre...
FROM THE KEEP... HOVE CEMETERY Hove residents in 1890 had a choice of burial plots in their new cemetery, recently opened along the Old Shoreham Road. This detailed plan of Hove’s new cemetery in 1890 has wooden rods attached to the top and bottom, and was designed to be hung where customers could identify or choose a particular plot. Perhaps they consulted it in the keeper’s lodge at the main entrance - a price list was probably displayed alongside. It’s a marvellously ornate plan. Every plot is detailed and numbered and sizes are given at the bottom, ranging from a child’s grave through to a single or double adult plot. Vaults were also available, holding up to three coffins. The cemetery is demarcated into areas of ‘consecrated’ and ‘unconsecrated’ ground, the former accommodating those of the Anglican (Church of England) religion and the latter those of Catholic, Jewish or other faith. The two chapels (again, one consecrated, one unconsecrated) are linked by a sheltered portico with plenty of space for the hearse to unload and turn in to the appropriate door. The depiction of the cemetery above the plan itself is perhaps its unique selling point. We are looking at a beautiful garden, almost a pleasure ground, of freshly landscaped downland, with just a few white headstones added for embellishment. The field gate in the right hand corner is a clever insertion, reminding the viewer of how near the cemetery is to the countryside while in the distance is the sea. One or two boats are bobbing

along, and the rigging of a larger one, probably berthed in Aldrington Basin, can be seen behind the trees. The buildings and churches of Hove can be seen to the left and among them are the two gasometers which stood where Hove Tesco’s stands now. Look hard at the centre of the image and you can even see the steam train chugging along on its way to Shoreham! A full Victorian funeral is taking place at the gates of the cemetery. Three horse-drawn carriages are moving through into the Main Avenue, the first, with glass walls, carrying the coffin on full display. The horses have black plumes and each carriage is preceded by an undertaker carrying a ceremonial staff. Three carriages (two containing the mourners) would have constituted a funeral of the more expensive type. Driving along the Old Shoreham Road today, you can clearly see the wall, lodge and entrance gate of Hove’s first cemetery, and it’s well worth going inside and looking at the extravagant and even exuberant graves of our first wealthiest citizens, strung out along the Central Avenue. Hove’s rapid expansion during the early 20th century resulted in the Council building a second
cemetery across the road from the first. This has made the South Cemetery a very quiet place but at the same time it has enabled it to retain its original appeal. It is still a desirable final resting place in a garden between the Downs and the sea. www.thekeep.info Lindsey Tydeman

Local history from Rachel Bridgeman…
“IF I DON’T SPEAK, WHO WILL?” - ALFRED HUBERMAN Holocaust Memorial Day, 27th January 2020, marks 75 years since the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau. One West Hove resident dedicated his life to bearing witness to the Holocaust in the hope that his own harrowing story would help future generations learn the lessons of the past, and to show how the Holocaust was a process which started with intolerance and discrimination. Painful though his memories were, Alfred gave talks to local schools and community groups. His widow told me: “Alfred wanted everyone to know what hatred of the other could bring about.” Alfred was part of a large, happy, close-knit family in Pulawy (Poland). Although he had previously encountered anti-Semitism, after the Wehrmacht invaded in 1939, the Jewish population was immediately confronted with violence – savage beatings; deportation for slave labour; driven into overcrowded ghettos. 11-year-old Alfred and his family fled to the countryside

but, denounced by the local mayor, were forced into a Jewish ghetto. His family were torn from each other during a roundup; his last heart-breaking memory was of his youngest sister, terrified and distraught. Alfred was deported to a slave labour camp where, working in a munitions factory, he suffered from TNT poisoning and tuberculosis. Later, he was transferred to Buchenwald concentration camp from where – starved, emaciated and ill - he was forced on a Death March to Theresienstadt concentration camp. He was liberated in May 1945. Among 732 child Holocaust survivors brought to England, Alfred was first welcomed to Windermere (Lake District), before moving to Hove in 1946. He traced one sister who had miraculously survived Auschwitz; his parents, four sisters and more than 50 relatives perished in the death camps. “I get upset when I cannot remember their names. I am the only one left who knew them, what they looked like, so I often repeat to myself my cousins’ names.” He worked as a master tailor in Brighton, married a local girl and had three children. Alfred died in 2011. His legacy is The Alfred Huberman Award to encourage young people to learn the lessons of the Holocaust and to ensure that its horrors should never be forgotten (see separate article). News from the Friends of Hove Lagoon…
THE FRIENDS OF HOVE LAGOON
Lagoon Update The Lagoon pools will be emptied and cleaned at the end of December and hopefully be refilled by early February. LagoonFest 2019 At its committee meeting on 27th November, Angie, Friends of Hove Lagoon Treasurer, reported that LagoonFest 2019 made a surplus of £13,149. This included donations from our main sponsors: The Cheese Hut, Empire Construction, Shoreham Port & Vero Screening, and our other sponsors, Big Beach Café, Lagoon Pirates and Lagoon Watersports. The funds will be used for our planting scheme and other projects to improve the Lagoon environment. We are already planning LagoonFest 2020, which will be held on September 5th. We couldn’t have done so well this year without our superb volunteers and as the event grows, we need even more, including people to lead on a number of activities. Please contact me if you are interested. We are particularly keen to encourage younger people to help, as this year Mischa and Amber (age 14) helped Elinor with the children’s games and they were wonderful!

Al-Anon provide support for anyone affected by someone else’s drinking…
WEST HOVE
AL-ANON FAMILY GROUPS Al-Anon Family Groups provide support to anyone whose life is, or has been, affected by someone else’s drinking, regardless of whether that person is still drinking or not, with currently over 700 meetings around the UK and Ireland and over 24,000 meetings worldwide. Lisa, 49, shares her story: “I met my husband when I was 20 years old. There was an instant attraction and within a month of meeting we were living together and inseparable. I knew he liked to have a drink, but I had no idea what an alcoholic was. “On our wedding day, he was hungover even though I had pleaded with him not to drink the night before. I worried every time he wasn’t home when he was supposed to be – “Is he dead?” I would ask myself. It got worse when I got pregnant; when our first child was born, he disappeared for almost four days. After our second child was born things got even worse; he was hardly ever home.

“When the children cried for his attention, he would put on earphones and turn the volume up. It was so awful that I began to realise I was happier when he wasn’t there, so finally I asked him to leave and he did!
With the help of Al-Anon meetings I am improving. I have begun detaching from responsibilities that are not mine. “With the help of Al-Anon meetings I am improving. I have begun detaching from responsibilities that are not mine. For almost 30 years I have carried the responsibility that it was my fault the children were not raised by a decent father. My children ended up having a good life, and that was thanks to me. It’s hard to feel comfortable with that, but it is necessary for me to let go of blame, both of him, and of myself.” A new Al-Anon group has recently begun meeting at St Philip’s Church (in the Vestry), 7-8pm on Wednesdays or find other meetings at www.al-anonuk. org.uk/find-a-meeting/. We caught up with Rebecca to find out the latest from Waggie Tails...
NEW ERA FOR WAGGIE TAILS... How long have you been grooming dogs? Hello, I am Rebecca Mckay. I have been a dog groomer for 13 years and 10 of those have been at 43 Boundary Road where I started Waggie Tails grooming by myself for a number of years. The business grew from strength to strength and I quickly was in high demand; this demand enabled Waggie Tails to grow into the business it is today serving the local pet community.
What is your favourite aspect of your work? My favourite aspect of my work is transforming my clients’ dogs from scruffy to fluffy, making them look great and allowing their owners to show their glamorous pampered pooches off around town. I also love to help with grooming-related advice on how best to care for their loved pooch’s coat.
Have you got a dog yourself? I have a small black and tan little bundle of cuteness chihuahua called Ollie and he is nine months old and full of beans. Tea R oom Grand Opening Saturday 11th January 9.00 - 5.00 43 Boundary Road, Hove waggietailsgrooming@gmail.com
As part of the celebration Waggie Tails has a great announcement. As I wish for Waggie Tails to be the number one pet lovers’ community hub in the area, I am expanding Waggie Tails to include a dog-friendly tea house and pet shop, serving speciality grade coffee, brewed by a skilled barista, made using high-end equipment, ensuring our coffee is straight from bean to cup.
I am expanding Waggie Tails to include a dog-friendly tea house and pet shop Waggie Tails is a great place to come and meet petminded folks or just simply to come in and enjoy a great cup of coffee or our large array of different tea, cakes and pastries, light bites and treats for the dogs, all in a nice relaxed environment. I will also be offering time with myself, Rebecca, for all pet owners to come and learn to groom their own dogs, or even if you have always dreamt of working with dogs, Waggie Tails will be running certified accredited dog grooming courses of various levels to suit your requirements. Waggie Tails aims to be the one shop stop for all your pet-related needs.

News from Westbourne ward councillor Carmen Appich...
COUNCILLOR NEWS... Chris Henry and I have been very busy over the last few weeks. I am pleased to report that I have finally given up work in the credit union (though I remain an active member), so I can focus on my councillor tasks, which are many and varied. Chris and I have met several times with the West Hove Forum and the West Hove Seafront Action Group, to discuss ways of improving our neglected western seafront. We have also engaged with the new owner of “The Venue”, who is planning to work with residents to improve the area around this restaurant, which we hope will include new playground facilities and improved beach access for people with disabilities. City wide, Chris and I have been active in the licensing committee, including a visit with police to “Operation Marble” to observe policing and licensing in the night time economy. There’s also been a lot of training for us new councillors, on areas including licensing and planning policy and standards in public life. In my role as lead councillor for Adult Social Care I am engaging at national, city wide and local level: I have attended weekly meetings with council officers, quarterly sessions of the council’s health and wellbeing board, the public health workshop on dying well, the city safeguarding conference and the national care conference. I am very happy to report that I have found some amazing staff and residents during my visits to local care homes for older people and for people with disabilities. I am looking forward to completing my round of visits, including lunch clubs and day facilities, early in the new year. Chris has been busy with the South Downs National Park authority, and with school transport problems some parents have been experiencing following a change of provider.

And please do come and visit this fabulous museum, it’s worth a trip just to see the wonderful cinematic history exhibitions including some very rare old films! And please stay in touch and let us have your comments and concerns. You can get our contact details from the council’s website: https://new.brighton-hove.gov.uk, search for “councillors”. I hope you all had a good holiday and enjoyed the festivities. Cllr Carmen Appich Westbourne ward

Bloodline wills and care home fees… Can you avoid your house being sold to pay for care home fees? The answer is sometimes yes and sometimes no. If you are a couple (married or not), you can do a lot with your wills to help with this. Solutions for couples. The best solution for a couple who own their own home is to make sure they have the right sort of wills and own the house in the right way. There are two options: 1. Beneficial joint tenants (owners). 2. Tenants (owners) in common. How can Camrass Wills help? We can advise you what is best for your situation. We can tell you how you own your home – the Land Registry documents do not use either of the phrases, beneficial joint tenants or tenants in common! Lasting powers of attorney. These are often overlooked but they are a vital part of planning for later life. We offer a comprehensive service to help you set these up correctly. __________________________________________________________________________________________

Regular article about local exercise opportunity by West Hove resident Isobel Muir...
LOCAL EXERCISE...GET INTO SHAPE It’s that time again! Time to get rid of the festive excess and get back into shape, or perhaps get into shape for the first time ever. Daunting, right? Wrong. Well right actually but you can make it a lot less so by following this simple rule. It must be enjoyable. If it’s a chore there’s no way you’ll stick to it. If you don’t know what you like, a great way to start is to try a load of classes. You can get a 10 or 5 class pass for The Circle (North Street, Portslade) so you can try out a variety of classes without having to commit to being a full member. A secondary path to the exercise regime (regime sounds bad but I can’t find a suitable synonym) of your dreams is to find an instructor that you like and stalk them to the death! No. Don’t do that. What I mean is, once you find an instructor you click with, it is worth trying any other classes they do, that you may not otherwise have considered (at worst you won’t go back, but at least the instructor will have been good). This is how I have found myself with a new exercise regime commencing in mid-January.

I am currently 14 weeks into a 16-week plan at The Underground Gym (Camden Street, Portslade) to regain all the muscle I lost slowly through the course of 12 years of running. I have enjoyed seeing my progression in strength and having a target to strive for has really helped me stay motivated. The fact I’ve had to buy a whole new wardrobe of clothes for my rapidly expanding bottom could be seen as a blessing or a curse. Anyway I digress. Having spent the last year or so doing BODYPUMP at The Circle I discovered the wonder that is Rick. Immediately I knew he is exactly what I want from an instructor. I proceeded to go to a few other classes he teaches. Thankfully he has not served a Cease and Desist order on me and now I’m going to try out another of his myriad skills: one-on-one gym training. I’ve been reading about the benefits of compound movements for strength and flexibility and this will be my new obsession for 2020. Once Rick has showed me how to do all the exercises safely and effectively I’ll be off pumping iron until the end of time, or at least until I fancy trying something else. To see what Rick does, visit TotalFitnessExperts.co.uk. For more details about my life in exercise please visit my blog “IMFitHove”. Thanks, isobelmuir@hotmail.com

We’re talking to Mark Dalton of lookafteryourdog.co.uk.
NEW BUSINESS COMES TO BRIGHTON IF YOU LOVE DOGS READ ON... Mark, I hear you’re bringing a new business to Brighton that will interest pet owners and particularly dog lovers. Tell us more. Yes, my brother has been running a successful dog boarding business in the Midlands for some years. Living locally, I know there are so many dog owners around Brighton & Hove who want to lead a more flexible life and need a trusted home for their precious pet while they’re away. Does that mean you will be looking for people to host these dogs in their own homes? Yes, we are keen to hear from people who have a secure home with space, and most importantly, love dogs. What sort of person would fit the bill?
And finally, a bit about you and the team?
You may be retired or working from home, and you may already have a sociable or good natured dog who would enjoy the company. Pet lovers who’ve had a dog in the past often, in our experience, enjoy the chance to host a dog on a flexible basis.
Well, my brother Steve is a retired police dog handler, hugely experienced in all dog management. Me and my partner Suzy live in Brighton and are dedicating ourselves to building up the business in Sussex. We also plan to add dog walking and home visits for cat feeding in the future.
What would potential home boarders need to do?
Thanks and good luck with the venture.
Firstly, get in touch with us and we can answer your questions. Depending on how many dogs you look after, you may need a licence. We are experienced in working with the Councils and will guide all dog boarders through the regulatory process. The website and contact details are below and you are free to call any time with questions

Health advice from Nathalie…
SIX TIPS TO MAKE MEDITATING EASY Years ago, when at university, I was in awe of a friend who completed a full-time Masters with honours, while working in a high responsibility full time job. Her secret? She always meditated before studying. Meditation has many known health benefits – improved focus, immunity, sleep, energy. It’s also known to help reduce stress, anxiety and even panic attacks. With all that being said, many people find it challenging to stop their mind’s chatter or find the time to stop and sit still for even a few minutes a day.
Notice – After meditating, write down the thoughts that came up or how you felt during and after. This will make the benefits more obvious to you.
So here are some easy-to-apply tips to get you started:
WARNING: Daily meditating might change your life in many ways! Nathalie x
Guided meditation – If your mind tends to wander, use guided meditations on YouTube or download a meditation app on your device. Use headphones. Start small – Start at 5 minutes then slowly increase over time. Sit or lie down – Whatever feels right for you. Consistency – Try and stick to your daily goal – even if only for a few minutes at a time. Be kind to yourself - Don’t get annoyed if thoughts keep coming up. They will. Notice them and let them float by like clouds in the sky.

Local update…
FRIENDS OF STONEHAM PARK Our Christmas Market and Santa’s Grotto on 7 December was an enormous success. The weather was good and the sun shone. The music played, the choir sang and the mulled wine flowed. Crowds turned out and people were happy. In all we took nearly £1,400 on the day, making a respectable surplus for our coffers. And the band of local volunteers who made all this happen had a very enjoyable time. There is not enough space to thank all the people who helped us in one way or another but you know who you are, so thank you from the bottom of my heart. Richard Hearnden News from the Friends of Wish Park...
WISHFEST 2020 Friends of Wish Park are excited to announce that this year’s festival in the park will take place on Saturday 11 July 2020. If you want to have a stall, perform, get involved or be a sponsor we’d love to hear from you. We will also be holding a meeting on February 4 to discuss how to improve the park, exciting news about a new mural and to decide how to spend the money raised from WishFest 2019. Hove Methodist Church in Portland Road need help to get their roof repaired...
HOVE METHODIST CHURCH ROOF FUND An old church in need of roof repairs is such a cliché, but here we are – any minute now we’ll be putting a thermometer up on the wall outside. We need to keep the hundreds of people using our church building every week warm and dry.
One of the church's community events
A recent cascade of water down the organ stairs prompted us to call the roofer. Once he got the tiles off and the long-term damage was revealed, an initial quote of £3,000 ballooned to £20,000. And there are more tiles missing elsewhere. So, for the first time in years, we are raising money for ourselves. As a church our policy is to spend what we have making this building earn its place in the local community, every penny of our rents goes towards this. We encourage groups that in turn foster community. Our aim is to spread the good news through the myriad moments of grace that happen under this roof.
We welcome people of all faiths or no faith - one of our lunch club regulars is a militant atheist and enjoys regular theological disputation with the Minister but otherwise our theology is largely practice-based. We know some other local churches are in far worse situations than us, so we’re not asking for large sums, just a few pounds if you are moved to give them, dropped into the office, or passed to a lunch club volunteer, or popped through our letter box. Elin Star, Hove Methodist Church office@hovemethodistchurch.co.uk
News from the council...
COUNCIL EMISSIONS FALL Brighton & Hove City Council saw another big reduction in carbon emissions in 2018/19. Figures show the city council’s total carbon footprint was 21,793 tonnes CO2e compared with 24,965 in 2017/18, a fall of 12.7%. This exceeds a council target of a 4% reduction for the year. The figures look at emissions including electricity, gas and oil use in corporate buildings, schools and housing (communal supplies) as well as emissions from street lighting electricity and fuel usage from fleet vehicles. The council’s goal is to be carbon neutral by 2030.

An update on the council’s policy on the use of glyphosate...
WEST HOVE
COUNCIL TO CONTINUE WITH MANUAL WEEDING Brighton & Hove City Council’s Environment, Transport and Sustainability Committee agreed at its meeting on 26th November to end the use of glyphosate by its Environmental Management services with immediate effect, other than in exceptional cases to kill invasive plant species such as Japanese knotweed or to kill tree stumps. Glyphosate, commonly known as Roundup, is the world’s most widely sold weed killer, but many experts believe it causes cancer in humans while destroying the environment and wildlife. The removal of weeds in parks and on hard surfaces will instead be undertaken manually and the committee will review this approach in autumn 2020. Cityclean have responsibility for removing weeds on hard surfaces. They have explored different options but the only effective and affordable method was manual removal. This will involve employing an additional six staff for six months during the growing season which will cost £70,000 a year, which is £33,000 more than it would cost with the use of glyphosate. A report to the council said that ending the use of pesticides on hard surfaces would be likely to mean that there will be more visible weeds for longer periods of time. However, weeds contribute to biodiversity by providing a habitat and source of food for insects.
Cllr Pete West said that the Green Party had been calling for this policy for a number of years. However, he thought it was important that pavements remained weed-free to avoid trip hazards, so it was sensible to keep the new technique under review. Vanessa Brown, Conservative councillor for Hove Park, commented: “Residents like the idea of a pesticide-free city but they also don’t like to see all the weeds on the pavements. They are particularly bad in the outlying areas that have less footfall and this has been made worse recently by the fact that all the leaves have been coming off the trees. They’ve all got caught up in the weeds and it has become a mess in some places right across the pavement and a trip hazard.” Rachel Chasseaud of City Environmental Management reported that the council had only carried out about six weeks of manual weed removal in 2019 as a test and in the winter the weeds would start to die off naturally. In 2020 the weed removal will be much better planned, using information from this year’s trial. Please send local articles about local events and items of interest to info@westhovedirectory.co.uk
