Walk down the tidy pavements and it will quickly become evident that the street is proudly serving a multitude of retail needs. Between the varied selection of shops, you can pick up your prescription or a bottle of wine, purchase fresh fish at Kevin’s of Hove or meat at R.C. Secker Family Butcher, indulge in some pampering before a special occasion at Rocksea Beauty or have your watch fixed at Time Restoration Watchmaker & Jeweller. In the estate agency, the instantly likeable Healy & Newsom prove that oldfashioned customer service and charm are by no means dead. Offering 24 years of industry wisdom, they delight in building personal relationships with their clients, often dealing with several generations of the same family. From within the Upper Crust Bakery’s petite quarters wafts the scent of freshly baked bread, homemade cakes and soups, presented with a friendly smile by owner Elaine and her family, and at the deli the lunch crowd gathers to pore over the day’s specials. In Drury Tea & Coffee, pure arabica beans - roasted to a secret Italian recipe - are transformed into arguably the best coffee in town, served in a welcoming café adorned with local art. A few doors down, Viva Verde flourishes in a blaze of colour: an Aladdin’s cave of fresh country garden flowers, contemporary arrangements and trinkets for the home and garden. Coloured lanterns, locally-made candles, jewellery, ceramic pots, stone statues and gift cards tempt even the most restrained shopper. Florist Lynette’s ethos echoes that of many businesses in the street; locally grown, sustainably sourced produce is key. Welcome to the Hove’s Crown February edition of Fiveways Gardens a truly wonderful local shopping street....

Richardson Road, right? Perhaps not; tucked into a quiet spot between New Church Road and Portland Road, o many shoppers, entirely unknown. Yet in an increasingly commercial world, it’s rather refreshing to discover a hops and family businesses, where commitment to quality and community spirit is alive and kicking.

With the increasing interest in growing our own food, and maybe not so much money to go round, why not give it a go this year? But what if you have no spare ground to plant into? Well, how about some carefully chosen nice big containers in your front garden. Or, even better, get rid of some of that tired looking concrete or paving slabs and plant straight into the ground. I’m often asked what’s easy and suitable for growing in limited space. Top of my list are onion, beetroot, carrot and a lovely waxy salad potato, such as Charlottes. Nip out to your local garden centre or chat up friends that have an allotment, who’ll be able to get you a dozen or so seed potatoes from the allotment shop. Growing potatoes is simplicity itself.

them. In about late June/July, you’ll find a lovely crop of salad potatoes that you can just dig up as and when you want them. Easy, huh? If the whole crop’s dug up by the end of July, why not use the space to grow a range of gorgeous late summer flowers – Rudbeckias, verbenas, asters, grasses etc, that will keep you smiling through the rest of summer and well into autumn.

1. buy seed potatoes ASAP. 2. put them in a dark cold I was at a meeting recently with the council Parks place (the loft works well for me) for a few weeks to department in Preston Park and I’m chuffed to report “chit” or sprout. 3. push these potatoes into the ground that there’s a strong commitment to planting some where you want them to grow and cover with about banks of wild flowers in the park and some native 3-4 inches or 10cm of your garden soil. 4. relax and go shrubs and trees. Both of these measures are great and do some other things for a month or two. 5. when news for us and local wildlife. there’s lots of green leafy growth to about 8-12 inches, Happy days put another few inches of garden soil (or the bought stuff) onto the growing potato plants. You don’t want to completely cover them up, but this “earthing up” process means you won’t get green bits on your spuds and you’ll get a bigger crop. Do this several times over theing early months. theteam, plantswith wellmanicures watered provided by Sharon. are summer offered by MichelleKeep and the once there’s as plenty of foliage. You don’t to feed Operating a tight-knit community, theneed business owners of Richardson Road prove there is still a friendly face to business, and an affordable way to shop locally, right on your doorstep.

LOCAL GROUP.. The monthly article from the Hove Civic Society....

A GLIMPSE AT THE ARCHAEOLOGY OF HOVE AND PORTSLADE Another focus of Hove Civic Society is the heritage, history and archaeology of Hove and Portslade. Portslade used to be an Urban District Council with its own town hall and administration until it was merged with Hove. Then Hove and Brighton were joined together in 1997, and now it is Brighton that is usually in the headlines. I tend to concentrate on Hove and Portslade when I write pieces for our newsletter. There used to be an interesting display at Foredown Tower relating to the excavations at Mile Oak when the bypass was being built. It was dismantled when the Tower closed, prior to being taken over by Portslade Aldridge Community Academy, and the sarsen stone, female skeleton and other artefacts are now in store. (Foredown Tower has now been validated as a centre to prepare students for university entrance.) 20 years ago I was thrilled to find a carefully-worked flint blade from the Stone Age in my back garden (near Portland Road) – the cutting edge was still sharp. The area from the sea to the railway line is known as the coastal plain. North of that the land begins to rise – the South Downs. Prehistoric man roamed the area for millennia. Although it cost me nothing, that blade is one of my most treasured possessions. Without doubt the most valuable item in the City Council’s museums is Hove’s Amber Cup. In the Bronze Age important individuals were interred in burial mounds called barrows. One survived in Hove untouched until it was flattened in 1856 to allow the building of Palmeira Square. Fortunately it was excavated first, to reveal an ancient coffin hewn from a single piece of oak. This miraculously preserved the artefacts within, and the amber cup is the only cup surviving intact in Britain. It is approximately 3,200 years old and suggests trade links with the Baltic. In 2010 the British Museum borrowed it

for a major exhibition, “The history of the world”. They wanted to keep it but it is the star exhibit of Hove Museum, in a special alarmed cabinet in the 1st floor corridor. The cup is about the size of a small tea cup, and a press button light shows the beautiful translucence of the amber. I strongly recommend a visit (closed Sunday morning and Monday). What else lies beneath our feet waiting to be discovered?! Elaine Evans, BEM www.hovecivicsociety.org

KINGSWAY AND WEST HOVE RESIDENTS’ ASSOCIATION

DONT LET THE WORLD CUP KICK OUT KAWHRA’S AGM AND POLICE TALK ON TUESDAY 8th JULY! Nearly half the people in the world are watching the World Cup but don’t let that stop you coming to the KAWHRA Annual General Meeting on Tuesday, 8th July. It’s at the usual hall in Glebe Villas and starts at 7:15pm so we can guarantee to finish at 8:45pm sharp. Many KAWHRA residents are football fans and will want to be home in time to watch the World Cup semi finals. Police Community Support Officer (PCSO) Martina Mindekova of Hove Neighbourhood Policing Team has kindly agreed to talk to us on SAFETY, SECURITY AND SCAMS IN WEST HOVE and about her work in our area... with an opportunity for residents to ask questions afterwards. Martina has been working for Sussex Police since October 2008, providing a high visibility patrol in the local community, dealing with low level crime and anti-social behaviour. By meeting local people, she and her colleagues help to resolve community issues and provide reassurance to our residents and the general public. The talk will be followed by updates on parking and 20mph streets, including nuisance parking on Kingsway

and KAWHRA streets. Then we have an improved updated constitution to consider. We are very grateful to Peter Reeves for spending so much time and effort on this. The constitution is available to residents to see on our website (www.kawhra.info) and has already been emailed to members. The AGM follows, with election of committee members. If anyone is interested standing for election to the committee, please contact Jane, our secretary, on kawhra@ gmail.com, before the meeting. KAWHRA was formed over 3 years ago to fight Portzed, but has now broadened its horizons. We seek ‘to represent local residents and aim to help safeguard, represent and promote their interests on buildings, property, transport, access, community facilities, parking and other environmental matters’. We intend to remain locally vigilant and to notify residents of major plans or proposals affecting our area. All residents of the KAWHRA area are very welcome to come to this meeting. If you have recently moved here, we hope you come along. There’s no fee to belong to KAWHRA – you just need to live in our area. The boundaries are Kingsway, Boundary Road, New Church Road (south side) and Roman Road.

LOCAL news... We are very happy to support the campaign to keep St Leonard’s open. Please read on...

Saving St Leonard’s Does St Leonard’s Church, on New Church Road, look derelict to you? Well, despite all the long grass (part of a conservation project), it is still used as a place of worship. Not for much longer though, since the Church of England has announced that they are seriously considering closing the building. There has been a place of worship here since Saxon times, but now it’s the end … Or is it???

Many local people think the idea of closing St Leonard’s is wrong. In a way, this pretty church belongs to the people of Aldrington - and the hundreds who have been married here would probably agree. The bells, rung out at the joy of a wedding, are the only peal of bells left in Hove and whilst some may be annoyed by the noise, they are a vivid reminder of how life used to be. If the church closes, weddings probably won’t happen here again. If you go into the graveyard, you could almost think you’re visiting a rural church, it’s so peaceful. The ashes of a famous England and Sussex cricketer – who became an even more famous film star - are buried here. There is a Commonwealth War Grave too, where the remains of a WW1 RFC pilot are buried, killed in a mid-air crash over Aldrington in 1917. Inside, there is a memorial to local men killed in both wars – this might

be moved from the closed church. The people who worship at St Leonard’s want to keep it open. Not only for prayer but because we can see that it could offer so much more to the wider community of Aldrington, too. We are developing plans and looking to raise money to keep it open for community use as well - but first, we have to persuade the Church of England that we’re serious. We’ll be talking to our local community about what we’re planning and we’ll be hoping you will tell us too, about how you think we could serve people. We’ll also be telling the church what we’re thinking! Will you help us to preserve this beautiful piece of Aldrington’s history? Will you join us in Saving St Leonard’s? Please sign our petition when you see us in the street. Find us on Facebook at “Saving St Leonard’s”, for information about our online petition.

We love to feature local West Hove people. Let us know if you are interested or know someone who might like to feature...

Local Person... Sarah whiffen What is your name and where in West Hove do you live? Hello, I’m Sarah Whiffen and I live in Lawrence Road. How long have you lived in the area? I have lived here for eight years now with my husband and two children. What do you most like about living in West Hove? The needs of a growing family are local and within walking distance. There are plenty of open spaces and leafy streets. I feel part of a community, which is very appealing. We know you are involved with West Hove Infant School. Tell us more… I am a member of the PTA at the school, and in 2011 headed up a fund-raising campaign to provide essential repairs and upgrades to the school swimming pool. We reached our target of £30,000 in the summer last year and I am thrilled to see the new and improved swimming pool open to the pupils this term. We notice you have an upholstery business. What sort of work do you specialise in? Yes, I trained for two years with the Association of Master Upholsterers and Soft Furnishers and became accredited with them in 2010. Shortly after that I set up my own

upholstery business and named it The Upholstery Artist. It is this handcraft that I specialise in and is ideally suited to antiques. Other services I offer are rebuilds, repairs and re-covers. What is the most enjoyable part of your job? During my training with the AMUSF I studied the history of furniture and textiles. Being able to draw from my knowledge of this subject when advising customers on the right choice of fabric for their furniture is an area that I find very rewarding. There are thousands of upholstery fabrics on the market these days and it is impossible to know them all, but being able to work with some truly gorgeous fabrics and seeing how they can transform furniture pieces is a joy. How could someone get to find out more about what you offer? I have a website: www.theupholsteryartist.co.uk . It explains about traditional upholstery and the other services I offer; it shows examples of my work complete with testimonials from customers. I can also be reached on weekdays on 07920 844509. What is your greatest claim to fame? One of my very first upholstery commissions was for Vivienne Westwood.

how physiotherapy can help Martina Bisping opened her physiotherapy clinic on New Church Road in March 2014. We asked her some questions about her clinic... What treatments do you offer in your clinic? Everything from spinal and joint manipulations; muscle releases and stretches; acupuncture; home exercises; posture education; and a variety of treatments to help improve sports style, walking style, or just how you can sit comfortably in ways that aid recovery and ease pain. How do you accelerate recovery after injury or surgery? I assess and diagnose, then use gentle mobilisations, muscle release and acupuncture to relieve pain and help heal tissues. I also give qualified advice on when and how to start the rehabilitation process effectively, as the correct mix of rest and exercise is key to quick and longlasting recovery. How do you treat spinal injuries? I perform a full assessment through interview and physical examination to help me understand the symptoms and underlying causes of your problem. I then reduce muscle spasms, manipulate stiff spinal joints, and use

acupuncture or gentle mobilisation to reduce the inflammation caused by disc injury or spinal arthritis. If your core muscles appear weak, I teach simple exercises to help improve your stability. How do you help people with arthritis stay active? I use special techniques to mobilise joints, and reduce muscle tension, inflammation and pain. Osteoarthritis of the spine, knee, shoulder and other joints can cause intense pain, stiffness and weakness, but I work with your body to get the surrounding muscle strength back, and to use the body’s own ability to brace your joints. I also give you personally tailored exercises to relieve your pain and help you return to an active lifestyle. What is your training and work experience? I qualified in Berlin in 1996 and moved to Hove in 2007. I have practised in Berlin, Brighton and Haywards Heath. I regularly attend postgraduate programmes and am certified in Manual Therapy, Acupuncture and in the Rehabilitation of Balance Disorders. Who do you treat? Everyone from walkers, dancers, tennis coaches and kayakers, to doctors, office workers, and anyone who wants to stay fit and active no matter what their age. The Tree of Life Centre’s community choir is a friendly and fun group that started at the beginning of the year and has been growing and attracting new members ever since. Choir leader and natural voice practitioner, Helen Bowman, believes that everyone who can talk is able to sing. The choir sings a wide range of music, from traditional folk songs to modern music. Helen arranges the songs in simple but beautiful and uplifting harmonies; everything is taught by ear, so you don’t need to read music. No previous experience is needed, just a desire to sing! LOCAL gardening... We are delighted to introduce a new monthly gardening feature written by Nareesa Sulaiman, a local garden designer...

IMPROVE YOUR GARDEN, IMPROVE YOUR HEALTH Whether you like to potter for an hour at the weekend or spend hours in the garden every day, gardening has been shown to be good for reducing stress as well as improving physical fitness. Here are some jobs for the garden this month... Weeding and Deadheading Keep your plants happy and healthy by eliminating competition from weeds. Work through the beds with a hand fork or hoe, loosening the soil and removing weeds. Some weeds are able to regenerate from roots left in the soil so take out as much of the root as possible. Deadhead roses, perennials and bedding plants to encourage a longer flowering period. Pinch out on small soft plants or, for larger or woodier stems, use a sharp pair of secateurs to make a clean cut. Watering In dry periods, ensure that all plants get a good watering every few days. Soft fruit bushes, vegetables and any plants that have been recently introduced to the garden will need daily watering. Now that we are all on metered water, using a watering can filled from a water butt not only helps your water bills, but is also good exercise

and can burn a few calories! Water around the base of each plant rather than onto the leaves; evaporation will be slower and more water will soak into the soil for the roots to take up. Pruning Tidy up any shrubs that have just finished flowering, such as Weigela, Sambucus (Elder) and Philadelphus (Mock Orange). If you are happy with the size, just tidy up the shape of the shrub but, if the shrub has become too large, cut back to a manageable size and shape. Feature plant for July Salvia nemorosa This plant is a favourite of mine for its long flowering period (July to September, at least), its tolerance of our chalky soil and its being able to withstand the salt-laden coastal breezes. Good varieties include ‘Caradonna’, ‘Amethyst’ and ‘Ostfriesland’. Looks good with Geranium ‘Rozanne’ and Astrantia ‘Roma’. Great places to visit It’s always great to get inspiration from other gardens. If you missed the Sussex Beacon Garden Gadabout last month, go and have a look at the amazing borders at Sussex Prairies in Woodmancote, just 25 minutes’ drive from West Hove. You’ll be amazed at what they have achieved! www.sussexprairies.co.uk Happy gardening! Nareesa
