We love to feature some of the interesting and talented people of West Hove. Here is another...

LOCAL PERSON - SYLVIA HOLDER Sylvia Holder lives in Westbourne Gardens. She is the founder of the Venkatraman Memorial Trust, a charity which gives children from a poor village in India a better education. In 2012 she won the Times Sternberg Active Life Award, designed to celebrate the achievements of people aged over 70. How did you come to found the Venkat Trust? Because of a chance encounter with a 12 year old boy on an Indian beach 15 years earlier. The boy was Venkat, the beach was Kovalam, a poor fishing village near Chennai. I put him through school and university and his career was progressing well when he was killed in a road accident. He was 27. By this time retired and happily living in my new home in Hove, I returned to Kovalam to see what I could do in Venkat’s memory. It was not a difficult decision: the primary school was in a shocking state. I returned home and set up the Venkatraman Memorial Trust in 2004. Retirement over! Tell us more about the charity’s work... The primary school now has new buildings, qualified teachers, books, uniforms, computers, a tuition centre and sports ground. A high school is nearing completion and already has 250 of the 1000 pupils it will finally accommodate. Some 240 of the most deprived children are sponsored by UK individuals with life transforming results. All donations go to the Venkat Trust as UK costs are met by the trustees. What do you like most about living in West Hove? Everything! It’s wonderful to be so close to the sea (and a beach hut), the friendly Portland Road shops and buses to Brighton. Is there anything about the area you would like to change? I wish the Council would enforce their own rules that beach huts should be painted every year – or at least, more realistically, every other year. The dilapidated ones don’t give our visitors a good impression.

How can people help the Venkatraman Memorial Trust? By sponsoring a disadvantaged child. For £12 a month, the cost of less than three hours’ parking in some Brighton car parks, unremitting poverty can be a thing of the past and the children can look forward to a bright, well paid, happy future. The children keep in touch with their sponsors several times a year. Many have now graduated from university and are enjoying stimulating, well paid careers, marking the end of generations of deprivation. www.venkattrust.org.uk info@venkattrust.org.uk

LOCAL NEWS... An update from the Hove Civic Society on the progress made regarding the Hove plinth project...

BIG STEPS FORWARD FOR THE HOVE PLINTH SCULPTURE PROJECT Exciting progress has been made on the Hove Plinth project, bringing Hove Civic Society ever closer to our goal of establishing new sculpture on the seafront. The Society has just revealed the ten shortlisted sculpture proposals for the planned Hove Plinth. The proposals, from which a final three will be selected at the end of the June, have been on display at the Jubilee Library and at Hove Library. There was also a seafront exhibition at the proposed site of the Hove Plinth. Actors in regency costumes created a static visual display to stir the public’s imagination. The Society’s sculpture committee received 70 proposals after a call to artists was issued in March and ten were shortlisted by considering their artistic quality, relationship to the site and technical feasibility. Taking the views of the public into account, the final three will be identified following interviews with each of the sculptors by a selection panel and the results will be announced in July. Fundraising for Hove Plinth and the first three sculptures is in progress and was given a significant boost in April

when £10,000 of Arts Council funding was awarded. This money will enable the Society to award £2,500 to each of the final three sculptors so they can make a small scale model of their proposal. Considerable support for the Hove Plinth has already been pledged, the total value of which to date is in excess of £55,000. The project was also given a boost when the renowned sculptor Philip Jackson CVO DL FRBS agreed to become the artistic patron of the project. There is still a long way to go and you can be part of this amazing project by making a donation large or small at www.justgiving.com/hovecivicsociety. There has never been a better time to be part of something so creative, historic and enduring in Hove. Further details regarding the Hove Plinth project can be found at www.hoveplinth.org.uk. The first in a series of interviews with all the local councillors in West Hove…

MEET WISH WARD COUNCILLOR ROBERT NEMETH Robert was elected in May as a Conservative councillor for Wish ward. What part of West Hove do you live in? I live on New Church Road, not far from Richardson Road where there are some of our area’s best independent traders. What is your background? I studied Engineering at Sussex University whilst finding my feet in the building trade. I’ve spent the past fifteen years growing my business which has proved to be a great opportunity to get to know our area and the rest of Brighton & Hove. I’ve written the Building Opinions column on local history and architecture for nearly ten years – close to 500 articles on interesting buildings around the city. What made you want to become a councillor? The first political issue that I can remember getting involved with was the campaign to save the Bandstand on the Brighton seafront. That was a fair few years back. I joined the Conservatives who I felt were doing more than the other political parties to restore it and also got involved with the Regency Society and Hove Civic. I’ve fought for many other local facilities since, including the new Connaught School and a new King Alfred. What do you hope to achieve in the area over the next four years? Common sense parking rules for all, more good school places, improved Lagoon/seafront, adult exercise facilities in Wish Park, greater resident involvement with Stoneham Park, closer links between traders on Boundary Road, a port with even more jobs, repaired pavements/roads, and a new King Alfred with a 50m pool…oh, and no more tatty camper vans on Kingsway.

It bothers me generally that Brighton receives far more council cash than Hove and Portslade, despite our part of the city contributing 40% of the council tax. This needs resolving urgently. What are your interests outside politics? My favourite hobby is beekeeping and producing wonderful local honey. I also enjoy going off-road in my Land Rover Defender and exploring Sussex generally. I’m not sure if I enjoy it yet but I’m currently training for next year’s Brighton Marathon following a pledge that I made on the doorstep during the election campaign! How can people contact you? I can often be found walking along New Church Road or on the No. 1 bus. Please do say hi in the street, otherwise, email me on robert.nemeth@brighton-hove.gov.uk or call 01273 291819. I’m always happy to help.

LOCAL gardening... Here is our monthly gardening feature written by Nareesa Sulaiman, a local garden designer...

In the garden... JuLY 2015 If you’ve got some time to potter around, there’s a lot to do in the garden this month... Weeding little and often helps to keep the garden looking good and the weeds don’t get a chance to really take hold. I like to work through the beds with a hand fork, loosening the soil and removing weeds from the root. Don’t add weeds such as dandelions or bindweed to compost piles as they will regenerate! As you work through the beds, deadhead roses, perennials and bedding plants to encourage a longer flowering period. A little word towards keeping your back happy; it is better to work on a kneeler or a garden stool rather than constantly bending over. Tidy up any shrubs that have just finished flowering, such as Ceanothus, Sambucus (Elder) and Philadelphus. If you are happy with the size, just tidy up the shape of the shrub but if the shrub has become too large, cut back to a manageable size and shape. Use secateurs or loppers rather than hedge trimmers, and make clean cuts about 1cm after a healthy leaf bud. If you added extra organic matter such as well-rotted manure through the beds in spring or last autumn, then your soil should have more water-holding capacity now

Penstemon

and be less prone to drying out. Still, in dry periods, ensure that all plants get a good watering every few days and any plants that have been recently introduced to the garden will need daily watering. Water in the early morning or late evening when the heat of the day has passed and water around the base of each plant rather than onto the leaves; evaporation will be slower and more water will soak into the soil for the roots to take up. While you are working in the garden this month, make a note of any areas lacking colour or of any bare patches. July is not really the best time to introduce new plants into the garden; this is a good job for the autumn. For now, fill any bare patches with your choice of colourful annuals. Feature plant for July Penstemon A long-flowering perennial which looks good from July right through to October/November. Great places to visit The Macmillan Coastal Garden Trail at the end of the month allows you to visit 25 private gardens from Brighton to Eastbourne in aid of a new cancer support centre in Brighton. £7 day ticket, www.macmillangardentrail.co.uk Happy gardening! News From The West Hove Forum...

New Healthy Neighbourhood Fund Grants Available The West Hove Forum has received £4,000 to give out to local groups. If you belong to a small community group in the West Hove area which has health and wellbeing benefits for local people, you can apply for a grant of up to £500. For an application form, email westhoveforum@gmail.com . The deadline for completed applications is 31 August 2015. YMCA Many members had been disappointed to hear of the possible loss of the YMCA building in Marmion Road, which may be replaced by five houses. Cllr Robert Nemeth said he hated the idea of it going, as it is a good resource. Cllr Denise Cobb said that we should be pushing developers to get recreational facilities on site. Stoneham Neighbourhood Planning Workshop Mike Gibson, Hove Station Neighbourhoods Forum planning advisor, said that they want to ensure that people living west of Sackville Road are fully involved in the preparation of the Neighbourhood Development Plan by creating a workshop with regular meetings. It will be called the Stoneham Neighbourhood Planning Workshop. They would like people with an interest in

West Hove Forum Community Open Day

the area to come along. If you would like to know more about this, contact Mike Gibson at hovestationforum@ gmail.com . Developer contributions for Friese-Green development in Portland Road Transport money under planning obligations from the developers of Friese-Greene House in Portland Road will pay for an access road at Ingram Crescent, modifications to road junctions onto Portland Road and an electronic board on the bus stop opposite Hove Junior School. Police Report Sergeant Paula Botting, Sergeant for Neighbourhood Policing, said that the police force have had to change their policing methods due to major cuts. This means that the PCSOs can no longer attend every community event; their main priorities are vulnerable people, the elderly and children. The current community policing priorities for the West Hove area are: 1. Burglaries 2. Vehicle crime 3. Anti-social behaviour in parks. The next West Hove Forum meeting will be at 2pm on Wednesday 22nd July 2015, in Muriel House, Ingram Crescent West. If you would like to attend on behalf of a residents’ association, business or other organisation, email us at westhoveforum@gmail.com or phone the Chair, Ron Gurney, on 01273 385361.

LOCAL... Local resident Mike Sharman muses on the problems of ageing…

Are you old? Been through a lifetime of changes but still feel young? My eight-year-old grandson thinks I’m old. “I’m not,” I said. “You are,” he said, “but what it was like when you were eight?” So I told him. Ration coupons for butter, sweets, chocolate, meat, cheese and more. .. 10” monochrome TVs, no channels, just BBC, six hours a day and UK only as no satellites. No watching Ronaldo and Messi abroad. Our grocer turned up outside our house, with local fruit and vegetables, sitting atop his wooden cart, pulled by his trusty heavy workhorse. Brass balance scales, plums in brown paper bags, fourpence a pound . No bananas or ice cream. Coal fire in one room, no central heating. Smoke pollution everywhere. Sweet sherry at Christmas, mild or brown beer, unfiltered cigarettes. Cars were rare and only one colour, black. No plastic except Bakelite made from milk, just wood, brass and leather. No mobile phones, computers, iPads, Google, Amazon, Apple or Microsoft. No Xbox! My wide-eyed grandson asked, “But you must have had broadband?!”

PREMIER WINDOWS

Doors and Conservatories

With advancing years, life becomes progressively harder. I’m now very deaf and getting ‘long in the tooth’. It threatens to fall out soon but my dentist says, “No problem, I can put in a titanium implant.” Only £3,000 for one tooth. It’s much cheaper in India, China or Eastern Europe but what if it goes wrong? Fly back to correct it? My fear of dentists stems from horrendous childhood experiences, no anaesthetic, cringing under vibrating slow speed drill machines with whirring Meccano-like arms. Watch ‘Marathon Man’ and you’ll understand! I recently injured my heel and had treatment by the diabetic nurses at Brighton General Hospital. Once the old workhouse for the ‘mentally deranged’ and ‘feeble minded’, it’s perhaps the right place for me! “Avoid walking, cycling, gardening and rest frequently, use a walking stick and attend weekly for dressings. We don’t want to lose our foot, do we?” said nurse. So I use Mum’s old walking stick. Grandson mimics me, bent over double, and hobbling. He’s right, I am old.

The second in a series of physiotherapy articles with advice from local physiotherapist Martina Bisping...

FOCUS ON PHYSIOTHERAPY...Neck pain Neck pain makes even simple tasks an ordeal: here is some advice for gentle treatment. Causes of neck pain Muscle strain – this is where the muscles around the neck shorten and can come from prolonged activity like using a computer, overdoing a strenuous task, or poor posture. Muscle strain can also lead to headaches. Joint pain – this can be caused by osteoarthritis, over-use or sleeping in the wrong position. The pain can radiate into the shoulder or make you tense your muscles. Nerve pain – this mostly originates from uneven pressure in the neck, like a bulging disc, and can cause both neck pain and numbness and weakness down the arm. Whiplash – this is caused by any sudden violent movement of the head. Whiplash causes the neck muscles and ligaments to overstretch but does not usually lead to disc or joint injury. Self-help with neck pain With all these injuries, try to continue with normal activities to prevent the muscles seizing up. Try to stand and sit normally as stooping forces your neck to overarch and puts more pressure on your neck muscles.

Martina Bisping Chartered Physiotherapist

Heat (like a hot water bottle wrapped in a towel) can provide pain relief and reduce muscle spasm. Gentle turning of the neck, bending from side to side and shoulder rolling will also help to relax muscles and calm down painful joints. About Martina - She has been a chartered physiotherapist for twenty years and practises at the Shadi Danin Medi Spa in New Church Road. LOCAL group... If you have some spare time to help a local charity please read on...

YOUNG CARERS NEED VOLUNTEER DRIVERS Very few Young Carers will see themselves as Young Carers, and very few know that there is help available, or that they can ask for it. They may also not see the benefits of letting people, particularly schools, know the situation they are in. Here at the Brighton & Hove Young Carers Team we offer a range of groups and activities for young carers throughout the year. Some are fun breaks and new experiences, whilst others are more focused on supporting young carers around specific needs and issues. Often just having the chance to spend time with other young carers can really help! Transport to these activities can be both costly and unreliable and here at Young Carers we would love to hear from anyone who would be interested in becoming a volunteer driver to enable our Young Carers to more easily access these events and keep our costs down to allow us to meet their needs more directly. The position would be on an as-needed basis with expenses paid. If this is something that you feel you could offer, please contact Elizabeth Freeman on 01273 746222.

The Effects of Caring: Financial • Many families where there is an illness/disability are reliant on benefits. Lack of money restricts the life of young carers. Educational • Poor attendance • Lateness • Poor concentration • Difficulty in doing homework • Difficulty in attending extra curricular activitites • Under-achievment Social • Isolation • Disruption of friendships • Bullying • Difficulty in having time/ability to go out to play and socialise • Not being able to act their age, having to be too mature • Being seen as / not wanting to be seen as different Health • Back strain from lifting an adult or child • Physical problems connected to emotional stress; e.g. headaches, feeling sick and eating disorders • Lack of sleep/rest • May develop emotional and mental health problems, such as depression Emotional • Stress • Anxiety • Insecurity • Guilt • Feelings of anger & resentment • False maturity
