WEST HOVE
Meet local resident Rob Galloway
LOCAL PERSON – ROB GALLOWAY Dr Rob Galloway lives with his family in Coleman Avenue. He is an A&E consultant and has been a vocal supporter of junior doctors in their contract dispute. He is also the crowd doctor for Brighton & Hove Albion. What do you like about living in West Hove? It is a fantastic place to live. I am incredibly lucky to live here with my wife and three kids. At the top of our road is our kids’ school and nursery which are both great, half way down my street is Wish Park and at the bottom of the road is the sea. Added to that, we now have some of the best cafés and pubs around. What more could you want…except a bigger garden I suppose. Do you have a favourite local place to relax? I love Wish Park and the café there.
5
What are the biggest challenges you face in A&E? It is not an easy job working as an A&E consultant, but I am privileged and lucky to do it. It is a difficult job and shift work is not easy with the intensity of what we do. The biggest challenges are not managing individual patients – that we are well trained to do. The biggest challenge is working with an NHS which is struggling to cope because it is under-resourced and with problems getting patients who need admitting going to the wards. It means patients in A&E then can get sub-optimal care and I find that really demoralising and challenging. But overall I love the job even on a Friday and Saturday night! Tell us your role at the Albion matches... As a football fanatic and a doctor I have the ultimate Saturday job. Match day doctor at the Amex. I am there to cover if anyone in the crowd gets ill. Ideally I would just watch the match but we often see 4-5 people a match who need a doctor. What I am most proud of is that we have had three cardiac arrests since the Amex opened and all of them have had their heart shocked back to life and survived because of the medical set-up at the matches.

Following on from this role, I am also the Medical Director of the Brighton Marathon. In charge of a team of 170 volunteer medics and 350 St John volunteers who look after the runners and spectators at the Brighton Marathon. You also give medical advice to TV programmes such as Casualty. What sort of questions do they ask? I got involved in this following a book I wrote about seven years ago: “In Stitches; the Highs and Lows of Life as an A&E Doctor” (written under a nom de plume, Dr Nick Edwards). This was a fictionalised account of what it is like working in A&E. Casualty contacted me and I started giving advice and now I occasionally review scripts from a medical aspect. I don’t, though, review the scripts from a storyline point of view, or a realism of what doctors and nurses outside of work are like point of view!

THE SHOREHAM–HOVE HORSE TRAMWAY - 1913 This tramway which was opened in 1884 ran from Brunswick Road, Shoreham, through Southwick to Portslade and thence via Boundary Road and New Church Road to the Hove–Aldrington boundary at Westbourne Villas. The cars were originally drawn by steam-engines, but by 1890 horses had been substituted. In 1897 the line was acquired by the British Electric Traction Company with a view to extending an electrified service through to Hove and Brighton but this project did not materialise and the line finally closed in 1913. This single decker is at Fishersgate.

News on a meeting of local groups...
In June, representatives of several local residents’ groups met to establish common ground and to co-ordinate their approach to proposals for new developments in the West Hove seafront area. The groups say that their immediate concern is to ensure that Brighton & Hove City Council are not pushed into ignoring their own planning policy, agreed after full local consultations. They propose to decline to talk to any developers who will not undertake to stick to the existing height guidelines. Some groups had been invited by Hyde Housing to attend a design workshop for the former Sackville Hotel site on Kingsway, but turned down the invitation, as Hyde could not give an undertaking to restrict any design to the council’s approved limit of six to eight storeys. An application to build a 17-storey tower on the site, which is in a conservation area, was withdrawn in March by Hyde following residents’ concerns. Hyde are also planning to develop the “PortZED” site near the Gather Inn pub. Preliminary designs for that site are expected in July. Residents say that Hyde have so far refused to agree to abide by the explicit height restrictions for that part of the seafront in the Aldrington Basin Development Brief. At the meeting were Angelique Henderson of Hove Seafront Residents’ Association, Jeremy Mustoe, Chair

As guests enjoy the unfolding views, they can move11 freely around the pod and even enjoy a glass of Champagne during their flight. A host will be available on board to assist guests and answer any questions. During the evening BA i360 will transform into the Sky Bar, and will host a calendar of exciting events throughout the year.

Here is our monthly gardening feature written by Nareesa Sulaiman, a local garden designer...
WEST HOVE
IN THE GARDEN... JULY 2016 The roses are really looking beautiful this year. For so long they have been considered out of fashion but now they are making a bit of a comeback. If you are looking to add roses to your garden, here is a (very) brief guide to the different types... The largest roses are the ramblers and climbers which can grow over 10 metres in height in ideal conditions. The main difference between the two is that ramblers tend to have flexible stems with large bunches of flowers whereas climbers tend to have stiffer stems with fewer but generally larger blooms. Both types are great for brightening up a house or garden wall and take up little 13 space in the bed in which they are planted. Bush roses are our most popular roses in the UK. This group is made up of the Hybrid Tea roses, which have large single flowers, and the Floribundas, which have large clusters of flowers; both groups have fragrant forms. These roses form a large bush up to a metre in height and spread. Standard (1m stem) or Half Standard (0.75m stem) roses have a straight clear stem with all the leaves and flowers forming a bush at the top; these look great in formal gardens. There is also a rather
‘Rhapsody in Blue’ rose
amorphous group of roses called the Shrub roses, which includes the Old roses such as the Gallicas and the Damask roses as well as the Species roses which usually have simple five-petalled flowers. Finally, there are many smaller roses such as the Miniature and Patio roses (about 0.5m) and the Dwarf Polyanthus roses (about 0.45m). All of these types are useful for the edges of beds, next to paths and in pots. Roses may have a single flowering period or may be repeat flowerers. Read plant labels and catalogues carefully to find out about flowering periods; many of the more modern roses such as the Hybrid Teas and Floribundas are repeat flowerers. Feature Plant Rosa ‘Rhapsody in Blue’ (Floribunda) I saw this rose in a garden late one summer’s evening last year; the blooms range in colour from purple to almost blue and the scent was incredible. Easy to grow and long flowering! Great places to visit Sissinghurst Castle Garden, Biddenden Road, Kent, TN17 2AB It’s a long drive and the roses may just be going over but there’s always so much to see in Vita Sackville-West’s garden, it’s well worth a visit. www.nationaltrust.org.uk Happy gardening! News from the West Hove Forum...
NEWS FROM THE WEST HOVE FORUM Hove Library: Our last meeting was held prior to the council’s recent vote not to sell the old Hove Library Carnegie building. The guest speaker was Sally McMahon, Head of Libraries and Information Services at Brighton & Hove City Council. She spoke about the wide-ranging changes planned to the council’s library services, including the introduction of Libraries Extra from July so that people can get access to libraries when they are unstaffed. Sally then outlined the proposal to move Hove Library into Hove Museum, building a large extension at the back, with plans for a “cultural hub”. She said a lot 15 of people were very concerned about the old building, but it’s a nightmare to run as a modern library service. Sally was questioned about the lack of parking at Hove Wish Park Surgery Museum. She said that the council had looked at putting the library into Hove Town Hall; however, the only big would make it more accessible. Sally said that the car enough space available there is on the second floor, park hadn’t been considered as a location for the library, which would mean problems with accessibility. One but she would look into it. forum member suggested that the library could instead Wish Park Surgery parking be put into Norton Road car park opposite Hove Town Hall, with another parking floor added on the top, which The Wish Park Surgery Patients Participation Group is concerned about access difficulties for disabled and ill patients at the new surgery in Portland Road. There are six doctors’ parking bays and two taxi bays, but nothing for the pick-up and drop-off of ill and disabled patients, so a petition to the council will now be the only remedy.

The information is picked up by St Mungo’s, the organisation that now runs the city’s rough sleepers service. The next West Hove Forum meeting will be at: 2.15pm on Wednesday 6th July at Hove Methodist Church (Upper Hall), Portland Road We will hear from community groups who will outline progress on the projects they were funded for through last year’s Healthy Neighbourhood Fund. Local nursery receives outstanding osted report...
NEW ‘SUPER NURSERY’ GETS OUTSTANDING OFSTED RATING Hove Village Day Nursery at 126-128 New Church Rd, which only opened at the end of September 2015, has 100 registered children and was rated ‘outstanding in all areas’ by Ofsted. Providing care for children aged 12 months to 5 years, Hove Village offers something unique at their impressive 8,000 square foot nursery. The facilities are second to none and the sense of space is apparent as soon as 19large you step inside their large reception. There are six classrooms, a dedicated art studio, soft play room and two studios for music and dance classes. At the rear is a large garden which holds an outdoor classroom, allowing learning to be extended outside. The location is great, with a large child-friendly park next door and the beach at the end of the road. Hove Village was the brainchild of Kathryn Hyatt, who over the last 15 years founded and built Caterpillar Music, one of the UK’s leading providers of pre-school music and education classes.
Kathryn’s vision was to open a nursery where specialist classes would be at the very heart of the daily timetable. Today, Hove Village delivers music, dance, art, yoga, Italian and Spanish classes for all children at the nursery and also has its own fully-equipped Montessori department. Parents are fully involved through events such as Parents’ Week where parents are invited to deliver sessions of their own. They also have access to a Parents’ Work Area. In May, an Ofsted inspector rated Hove Village ‘outstanding in all areas’ and stated: “The exceptionally high quality of teaching ensures that babies’ and children’s individual needs are precisely met and their outcomes are exceptional.” The full Ofsted report is available on the website. For more information, email hello@hovevillage.com, visit www.hovevillage.com or call 01273 358589.

News of local policing...
NEW ROLE FOR LOCAL PCSOS Following a review of local neighbourhood policing, Joe Higgins and Bethany Edge will continue to be our local PCSOs for Wish and Westbourne wards. They will however have a revised role from July, when they will be given new powers. The new role will involve investigating low level crime and anti-social behaviour. They will also be taking on problem-solving files and working closely with partner agencies to resolve issues within communities. They will be able to complete basic investigative tasks, such as the taking of statements from victims of crime and handling court exhibits, in support of resolving these local issues. They may also complete 21 community resolutions for low level crimes. PCSOs will be equipped with body-worn video cameras and smartphones as these are rolled out across Sussex, giving them access to the latest information and intelligence. Stoneham Park is currently on the list of local priorities due to anti-social behaviour by a group of youths, and Hove Neighbourhood Policing Team urge all local residents and users of the park to report any crime or antisocial behaviour by calling 101, or 999 if appropriate.

The Hove Library debate seems to have drawn to a conclusion for now with the recent decision below...
WEST HOVE
HOVE LIBRARY TO REMAIN IN CARNEGIE BUILDING A meeting of the council’s Policy and Resources Committee voted in June for an amendment by the Conservative and Green parties to the Libraries Plan, which means that the Hove Library service will stay at its current Carnegie building until at least spring 2018. This will be achieved using money from last year’s council underspend. Future options for Hove Library and Hove Museum are now subject to further review and cross-party working.

We have never received more letters on a single topic at The West Hove Directory than on the topic of the proposed move of Hove Library. Thank you to all residents who have written to us on this emotive local subject. We received the following readers’ letters before this latest council vote.
Applause for Hove Library Campaigners When I was growing up, in a down-at-heel part of South London in the 1950s and 60s, our local library in Tooting High Street was a good friend and motivator. For a young working class lad, the fact that the library was in the busy High Street was fundamental. I would never have ventured into suburbia to find it. I was the first in my family to go to university and the library was a part of that story. As an old school socialist I have no qualms whatsoever in applauding Robert Nemeth and all those who campaigned to save our library in its present site. Well done! I am only sorry the Labour council has strayed so far from its roots. I Butlin New Church Road

As residents many of us would like to keep the beautiful Victorian building which is our current library which offers fantastic facilities for children and adults alike. I strongly disagree with the library being shoehorned into Hove Museum which will compromise the current facilities and exhibition space. Worst of all, the plans to take away green space outside the museum...the only green space within our ward, and this is unforgivable on many levels. I have been a Labour supporter all my life but I have to say Councillor Robert Nemeth clearly listens to residents whilst the Labour Party choose to walk all over them and bully local residents to their own ends. I would like to hear from someone who wishes to keep our historic buildings alive and retain green space for future generations to enjoy. Nathalie’s Monthly Health TIP
TO EAT OR NOT TO EAT…MEAT! Whether for ethical reasons or because so many trendsetters are encouraging eating less/no meat, a Mintel study in 2014 found that one in five 16 to 24 year olds in the UK were vegetarian or vegan. So here are a few pointers if you (or your teen) are thinking of taking the plunge: • Get plenty of good quality protein. Insufficient protein will wreak havoc on your blood sugar and make you snack on sweet foods, which will tip the scales in the wrong direction: eat a palm-sized portion of protein 4-5 times a day. Good options are pulses (with a grain or seeds to make it a complete protein), quinoa, 33 eggs and dairy (if not vegan), tofu, some grains, nuts, seeds, nut butters, houmous, avocados, seaweeds. • Get organized: Many people won’t know what to cook for you when you go round so offer to bring some food, host yourself or eat a protein snack before going out. • Get your Vitamin B12 levels checked if you feel exhausted all the time. You may want to supplement it if you go vegan.
• Connect with your body and regularly check if the new diet is making you feel better or worse – and be honest with yourself – it doesn’t work for everybody. HOVE PARK ACTORS CHOSEN TO PERFORM AT NATIONAL THEATRE Hove Park School are very proud to announce that the school has beaten off stiff competition from 500 other schools, youth theatres and professional theatre companies to perform at the National Theatre as part of their Connections Festival celebrating youth talent. Connections is the largest youth theatre festival in the world and is this year celebrating 21 years of brilliant new writing for young people aged 13 - 19 by some of the UK’s most exciting playwrights with performances 35 by 12 companies 28 June - 4 July. On Saturday 2nd July at 7pm the Hove Park group will perform Citizenship, a hilarious coming-of-age play by Mark Ravenhill, exploring sexual identity. Students Hari Johnson, Eleanor Rowland, Lily Alderson, Phoebe Cook, Liam Purtell, Gareth Bourne, Devon Magness-Jarvis, Noah Bramley, Mellisa Penduka, Ilayda Yoleri and Max Bower will tell the story of Tom, who dreams of being kissed, but he’s not sure whether by a man or by a woman, and he feels he should choose pretty quickly.
Director Tania Banks said: “Ours is a city rich in diversity, which also reflects our student and staff population. Citizenship was a play that connected with us all as it communicates the themes of sexual identity, which are so relevant to the lives of young people. Friendship is also deeply rooted within this production and we have bonded on- and off-stage. We are absolutely over-themoon to perform at the National as this really is the stuff that dreams are made of.”

PROPOSALS FOR NEW TERM-TIME HOLIDAY IN LOCAL SCHOOLS A new week’s school holiday during term-time may be introduced in Brighton & Hove on a trial basis during the academic years 2017-18 and 2018-19. The new holiday would be created by saving five days from existing holiday periods. Brighton & Hove City Council’s Children, Young People and Skills Committee has been holding a formal consultation on three options for the new week of holiday in 2017-18: the weeks commencing Monday 16 October 2017, Monday 20 November 2017, or Monday 5 March 2018. A final decision on the new week’s holiday for 2017-18 will be made in early July. 39 The council say that, during an informal consultation, 59% of more than 1,500 respondents said they would like to see a new week’s holiday created outside the traditional pattern. The council is looking at this because the cost of a holiday taken in the school holidays is higher than the equivalent holiday in term time. They say a stand-alone week’s holiday during term time could allow parents to buy a cheaper holiday without taking their child out of school. Creating a stand-alone holiday during the summer term has been ruled out due to concerns expressed by the

education community that this would cause too much disruption to vital exams and revision. The Chair of the council’s Children, Young People and Skills Committee, Councillor Tom Bewick, said: “The new term-time holiday could offer lower-income families in particular the chance to take holidays that might be unaffordable during the traditional pattern of school holidays. It should also help to address the issue of parents taking their children out of school during term time for an unauthorised holiday.”

MACMILLAN COASTAL GARDEN TRAIL July sees the fifth annual Macmillan Coastal Garden Trail to raise money to support the newly constructed Macmillan Horizon Centre in Brighton (next to the Royal Sussex County Hospital). Geoff Stonebanks’ Driftwood Fundraising Group has now raised over £32,000 for the building of the centre and this year’s funds will contribute to its maintenance, upkeep and running costs. At least 29 gardens between Brighton & Hove and Eastbourne are set to open their garden gates. Most will open between 11am and 5pm on both Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th July, many serving home-made tea and cakes. The following gardens will open in Hove:
