Welcome to OUr June edition of the west hove directory... Another four years passes and once more the World Cup is here. For once the expectation levels amongst the majority could be termed as ‘realistic’, with the gradual realization since the last World Cup that we are no longer a major force in world football. That said, however, and what keeps us all gripped and fascinated by sport is that it can throw up amazing stories and unexpected heroes. Fingers crossed!! So, we have the usual mix of articles for you this month, all written and supplied, proofread and distributed to you by local people. Many thanks for all who send us items each month and if you want to see something published about something local you are involved in, please get in touch. Have a great June!! LOCAL GROUP.. The monthly article from the Hove Civic Society....

Reaching out to hove From a hydrogen-filled balloon 65 feet in the air in the 1960s, to Twitter in the 2010s, Hove Civic Society has always found ways to communicate with our local community. At the heart of what we do is the aim to stimulate interest in the beauty, history and character of Hove and its surroundings. This means reaching out to residents and encouraging our members to spread the word.

Back in 1960, a local resident used a balloon to show her neighbours the height of a proposed new building development, and as a result collected 2,000 signatories to her petition. From this interest in local community matters, Hove Civic Society was born. Today the society produces a regular newsletter for members, has an email list, a popular website and a presence on social networking sites Facebook and Twitter.

two-way. We can use them to gather the views of our members and local residents, and encourage conversation and debate about the issues that affect us all. If you are interested in joining these discussions, we want to hear from you! We are always looking for new members who want to celebrate and support our local area, and have a range of projects that you are welcome to become involved in. To find out more, please visit our website:

Through these media we keep our members, and the wider community, up-to-date with our work: from involvement with planning decisions to planting street trees; from fundraising for seafront art to fascinating lectures from local experts. KINGSWAY AND WEST HOVE RESIDENTS’ ASSOCIATION

Time travel in west hove A 1920s estate agent’s brochure published when the ‘West Hove Garden Estate’ was built has survived, passed down to the occupants of one of the houses. So people living in the area from Derek Avenue to St Keyna Avenue can see the original drawings showing what the interior of their homes looked like. This one shows a dining room which, after 90 years, still looks retro - stylish. The black painted beams on the ceiling are in fact the joists that support the floor in the bedroom upstairs, so the ceiling between the beams is the underside of the upstairs floor. When I moved into our house I wondered if some past occupant had removed an original ceiling to expose the beams - but the brochure shows that this was how the house was originally built. This means that there isn’t as much sound insulation between the upstairs and downstairs rooms as in a modern house. This seemed odd until I realised that when these houses were built kids didn’t have any loud sound equipment in their bedrooms. So parents could dine in peace downstairs! A local resident told me that in the 1970s, when DIY stores sold stick-on fibreglass fake beams, a visitor confidently insisted that these had been used for the dining room ceiling. Fed-up with trying to convince the

visitor of his error, the resident said, “My grandmother’s bedroom is above here, and she’s up there. So if those beams are only fibreglass she will be joining us any minute now!” Over the years there have been many changes to the houses, so in some the beams are now hidden behind ceilings added when there was a post-war fashion to ‘modernise’ houses by hardboarding over character features. The ghost of the original features recently appeared in our house when wallpaper was stripped off our dining room wall. We saw the clear grey outlines of the tall mantelpiece that once surrounded a long-gone fireplace; the now blocked-up door; and between them the clear outline of the serving hatch between the dining room and the adjoining kitchen. Serving hatches were a clever feature of 1920s homes that sadly went out of fashion post-war. Many were blocked up, but some survive. As my friend handed me my meal through her serving hatch she said, “I know serving hatches are old-fashioned – but it’s too useful to lose!” When the food is ready the person who cooked it just hands it through the hatch - no need to trot in and out carrying plates between the two rooms. Also, hatches usually had little doors which could be shut, hiding the sight of piles of used pots, pans and plates. So when doing the Sunday roast the jazz-age homeowner could enjoy the convenience of open plan, whilst being able to shut off views of the waiting washing up. Who knows, future designers may introduce these useful features again in new homes! Sue (kawhra@gmail.com)

LOCAL EVENT... The ‘not to missed’ annual event Paddle Round The Pier is back...

Paddle Round the pier Brighton’s favourite and the world’s largest free charity beach festival, “Paddle Round The Pier”, returns to Brighton on July 5th & 6th 2014.

This annual water-sports and beach lifestyle celebration offers something for all the family, whether you like to join in or simply sit in the shade with a cocktail while the kids play. There are performances, world class races on the water and also the chance to have a go yourself. It’s not all wet stuff, as there are plenty of dry activities to enjoy too! Taking up most of Hove Lawns (just west of the old West Pier wreckage), the Paddle Village hosts exhibitions, retail and performance space. It’s a free-to-enter event; however, as it’s for charity, they do ask for a donation of just £1 from adults, but kids go free! “Paddle” (as it’s affectionately known among the locals) began back in 1996 and last year saw visitor numbers of 60,000, proving its ongoing popularity and laid-back appeal. Over the last few years the event has donated over £200,000 to charity. This year’s charities are the RNLI, Freddysmile - a Sussex-based, family-run charity raising money for children who have been diagnosed with cancer - and Surf Life Saving GB, a charity which has approximately 6,000 members nationwide helping to make our beaches a safer and more enjoyable place for everyone. Features for 2014 include: The Fabulous Kids entertain-

ment stage, kids’ area, rides and amusements, huge sandpit, skate and BMX ramps, the main Music Stage, Ukulele Stage, Tea Dance, world food courts, bars, Parkour, slalom skate, retail stands, a seated grandstand, exhibitions, displays, demo beach, Surf Life Saving Competitions, SUP races (competitors for some of the races have come from as far afield as France, Belgium, Brazil and Hawaii), boat races, Streetball, strongman, muscle beach, beach volleyball and the title event “Paddle Round The Pier”. A firm favourite of local businesses and clubs alike is the chaotic carnage of the “Paddle Something Unusual”, where teams have to think of the most ridiculous thing they can - then try to paddle it round the pier! Any disabled child, young person and their family/carers can use the “Paddle Access Beach” (full of every water-sports toy possible). The Paddle Crew work on a ratio of 3:1 to enable the kids and young people the full support they need to enjoy a day in the sea with family and friends, ensuring this great event is completely inclusive! Featuring local nursery My First Word...Grows up. Read on...

my first word grows Up...Hove (PART OF THE MY FIRST WORD GROUP NOW COMPRISING TWO PRE SCHOOLS, ONE BABY UNIT AND A NEW PRE SCHOOL DUE TO OPEN IN MARCH.) MY FIRST WORD GROWS UP.....HOVE has been open now for 15 months, and was rated GOOD in all areas from OFSTED at their first inspection, and has just been awarded the QUILT Quality assurance badge for their 2 year old module and introductory work with 2 year olds. Manager Dena James said, “We are thrilled with the way the setting has grown and progressed and are very excited to be adding an acting/imaginative play class led by DEBUTOTS from March this year. We already offer Yoga on a weekly basis led by TATTY BUMPKIN. Yoga and Acting are a great way to help children build self esteem and have fun. We are also lucky enough to have a qualified level 3 Spanish teacher on our staff so are able to provide Spanish conversation and singing on a daily basis and the children performed in Spanish for the parents at our Christmas show.”” “We have just added an Astroturf garden area, which the children love and is perfect for our football skills training, twice weekly provided by one of our staff who holds a level 2 football training qualification. All of these activities link to the Early Years Foundation Stage and promote our ethos of “learning through play”.

The setting which is conveniently located close to Boundary Road, within easy walk of Portslade station, and Hove’s main Church Road, is open Monday to Friday 8 – 6. We offer funded hours for two, three and four year old children with no restriction on when these hours can be taken. Director, Lisa Southon, who started as a childminder over ten years ago, said “We know how hard it is to find good childcare, and we believe in offering our parents the flexibility they need to meet their individual needs. As working parents ourselves, we are aware of how hard it is to juggle family life and work. “ MY FIRST WORD ....BABIES is now also located at GLEBE VILLAS with a beautifully renovated room and which leads directly onto the Astroturf garden, this unit also offers the flexibility of hours, baby yoga weekly and trips out for walks to local parks, and places of interest in the community. Welcome to the ANYone for Tennis? February edition of Fiveways Gardens Regular article about local exercise opportunity by local west Hove resident Isobel Muir...

Although it is hard to believe, summer is on the way and what better way to get out and get fit than having a go at tennis? I was never very good at it, as precision and finesse is not my strong point, thus I would generally hit the ball at full strength way out of the court (and indeed the entire park on occasion).

Brighton & Hove City Council have a good selection of tennis courts, the closest to this area being those on the Kingsway. All the council’s courts are free before 10am, with various fees thereafter depending on the location and the time. I would suggest getting out there bright With the increasing interest in growing our own food, andand maybe not so much money to go round, why not give it early one day (possibly not a day like the day I am a go this year? The Secret Garden is a plot of land behind St Leonard’s Church that last year was completely overgrown. It is being transformed into a vegetable garden and wild garden with a pond. A path is due to be completed and some large raised beds are also soon to be completed. Wild iris, several shrubs and elm trees surround the garden and make it feel secluded. We have a beehive too. 43 Glebe Villas, Hove BN3 5SL Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th June 11am – 5pm In summer our garden becomes our living area with comfy seating for relaxing and socialising. The patio, with its pretty pots, leads onto the lawn and colourful flower borders, and to a ‘secret’ area at the end which opens into a compact raisedbed vegetable garden.
