Welcome to June’s edition of your local publication We hope you enjoyed the festival and you managed to make the time to take in something of what was on offer! It always goes so quickly that I usually find myself at the end of May desperately trying to get tickets for something! So we enter June and in theory the first month of Summer and let’s hope we enjoy a lovely long and warm Summer this year. And talking of Summer probably the local event most synonymous with the season is the annual Paddle Round The Pier and we feature that event on page 9 of this month’s edition. Hopefully Summer will see you spending lots of time at the seafront and on page 5 we have an interview with a local Seafront Officer. There are plenty more articles for you to read this month so hope you enjoy the read! Have a great month! Charlie Branson is a Seafront Officer and Beach Lifeguard who patrols West Hove beach and we asked him about his work.

SEAFRONT OFFICER - CHARLIE BRANSOn How long have you been a Seafront Officer? I’ve been a Seafront Officer for a year, but have been with the Seafront Team for three years. What is the best part of your job? The best part of the job for me personally is working next to the sea. I grew up in Cornwall and have a passion for the marine environment and conservation, surfing and sea swimming. I consider myself lucky to be working on the beach every day and I also enjoy keeping people safe. I love working in the Seafront Team with my enthusiastic, like-minded colleagues managing beach safety together and also working with other organisations to deliver a good service to the residents of Brighton and Hove. What sort of problems do you face? Problems can literally be limitless. But the biggest problem is misadventure: those people who don’t know about sea conditions, the ocean and marine environment, or individuals over-estimating their own abilities. That sort of haphazard, careless attitude on the beach can prove very dangerous to those without awareness. If you combine that with the inevitable alcohol consumption at the weekend, this will obviously accelerate these problems. Lost children are also a major priority for us on busy days and parents losing sight of their children causes many resources to be called on. Where is the safest place to swim in West Hove? The main lifeguard station is in front of the King Alfred Leisure Centre. Immediately west of that is Hove Seafront office, our seasonal lifeguard HQ where we will have at least one Seafront Officer during the summer in the weekdays and two at weekends. During the middle part of the day there are always two Beach Lifeguards. Then, during the school holidays, there will be another lifeguard station just to the east of Hove Lagoon, to the south of the pitch and putt.

What are your top tips for staying safe on the beach? ALWAYS SWIM BETWEEN THE RED AND YELLOW FLAGS! Always speak to a Beach Lifeguard or Seafront Officer for advice. Be aware of the tides – tide tables are available in the Seafront Office. Always check the weather forecast before you go to the beach – the weather can turn adversely in a few minutes. Always keep your children in sight. Use sun cream if it’s a sunny day. For any beach or sea issues call the Seafront Office on 01273 292715. For seaside emergencies call 999 and ask for the COASTGUARD who will task the Seafront Office.

PORTLAND ROAD The section of Portland Road between Titian Road and Reynolds Road was one of the last to be developed, some years after the areas on either side. Building started in 1935 and was completed in about a year, but for some reason two plots at the corner of Titian Road were not included. For many years they were used for growing vegetables. This view is from Portland Road, in 1973. The building now on that corner is currently occupied by TJ’s Branding Solutions. LOCAL event... Summer’s coming - the world’s biggest charity beach festival takes place on July 4th and 5th 2015 at the eastern end of Hove Lawns.

Paddle Round The Pier 2015 “Paddle” is an annual free event which sees over 50,000 visitors converge on Brighton & Hove each year to celebrate all things Paddle sport and beach lifestyle related. This award-winning Paddle Round The Pier has been run by volunteers since 1996 and raises thousands of pounds for charity. The “Paddle Village” consists of 80,000m² of exhibition, retail and free entertainment space. There are three music stages: the Main Music Stage featuring up-and-coming acts, the Ukulele Stage introducing some of the best four-string-strumming from across the UK and an extremely popular kids’ entertainment stage. Within the Paddle village is the Paddle Lecture Theatre, featuring 30-minute micro-lectures on surfboard design and big wave riding, among many other subjects. There are restaurants, bars, and lots of have-a-go sessions on land and sea for all to try. On the prom will be the first ever Foffa bike skid contest (how far can you skid a Foffa bicycle?), skateboard ramps, land paddle racing, and the UK Slalom skate championships. On the Jeep Sand Arena will be surf lifesaving competiSFP_flyer-front-ol.pdf 1 05/02/2015 17:02 tions, beach volleyball and beach tennis.

On the water will be 48 hours of the very best competitions the UK offers in SUP (Stand Up Paddle), Swim, Prone Paddleboard, Giant SUPs, Lifeguard, Ocean Skis and inshore rescue boat racing. The title event Paddle Round The Pier itself takes place on the Sunday. This event creates a water-borne-blanket of entrants taking whatever they can get to float - surfboards, kayaks, dinghies etc - and paddling round the wreckage of the old West Pier. The biggest crowd pleaser has to be the “Paddle Something Unusual” - the perfect opportunity for those less stable in the community to exercise their creativity and join in the Paddle. It’s the team part of the event aimed at businesses or groups of friends. In previous years we’ve had everything from aeroplanes to cranes, from a bed to a shed – the only guidelines are to make it as ridiculous (but safe) as possible, raise money and have a spectacularly good laugh doing it! The charities chosen as the 2015 beneficiaries are: the RNLI, Rockinghorse and Brighton kids Surf Lifesaving Club. The opening times are: Sat 4 July 9am to 8pm and Sun 5 July 9am to 6pm. Yet more June activities for you to add to your calendars...

WISHFEST - FESTIVAL FUN IN WEST HOVE Come and join us in Wish Park for some good traditional fun at our annual Summer Fete and Table Top Sale on Saturday July 11. WishFest kicks off at midday with music, tasty food, popcorn and a bar to help the afternoon go with a swing. For the dog lovers, we’re having our Fun Dog Show, so give pooch a hairbrush and bring him or her along for some silly competitions. Get your aprons and wooden spoon ready for our Great Wish Park Bake-off competition with prizes for the best cakes for adults and young people. This year, one of the judges will be newly elected Hove MP Peter Kyle. Children will enjoy the bouncy castle for the kids, a craft table run by Red Jelly, a Nerf-gun shooting stall, Whack-the-Rat, tombola and lots of other fun entertainment. First4Football will be running football competitions for the football crazy. If you would like to set up a table, pitches are just £10 for the day. Last year we estimate we had over 400 visitors through the day, so it’s a great opportunity to advertise your company, sell your crafts or artwork or make some money selling your unloved stuff. We also need more volunteers. Just a couple of hours would make a huge difference. If you are a musician or in a band and would like to perform, we’d love to hear from you. The Friends of Wish Park have recently changed their name from Wish Park Residents Association as we felt the name reflected our community more. Anyone who enjoys the park whether you are using it for sport, dog walking, or just hanging out with friends and family are welcome to join us. Set up about four years ago, the group aims to improve the park for the benefit of users of the park. We have set up a community vegetable garden open to all; created our wildflower area Wish Hills; seen the renewal of our fantastic playground and the opening of Wish Park Café. Our next objective is for outdoor gym equipment for everyone to use and last year’s event raised just under £1,000 to go towards the fund. Community... Warmer days are coming - get out in the garden...

THE BENEFITS OF COMMUNITY GARDENING Gardening has long been known to have beneficial effects for both the body and the mind. Growing your own vegetables and fruit is now more important than ever with the ever growing population and the widespread use of pesticides etc; there is nothing that tastes as good as your own freshly picked organic produce. It can be hard work running your own allotment, not having the time to water the crops, being away on holiday and coming home to discover the weeds have taken over or the pests have munched it all! Therefore community gardening is a solution, with the benefit of shared knowledge and a place to meet new people. Special events are often planned so look out for these. Community gardens often try to help the wildlife too and can be lovely places for children to learn about nature and growing crops. They can be peaceful places away from the hustle and bustle of the city and they offer those who have no gardens the opportunity to grow things and experience gardening.

Wish Park vegetable garden

In West Hove we are fortunate to have two such community gardens. Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. The Secret Garden: Is situated behind St Leonard’s Church, New Church Road. It now has a pond, honey bees, four large raised beds, a

vegetable plot and a wild wooded area. Some structural work is still ongoing. No fee to join, work is varied and seasonal and we do ask that you bring your own gardening gloves and wear sensible footwear and clothes – be aware of hazards such as broken glass and uneven paths.

FREEPHONE 0800 0961696

Factory & Showroom: Units 4, 5 and 6, Southern Cross Industrial Estate, Freemans Road, Portslade. BN41 1GS www.premier4windows.co.uk

Just turn up any Wednesday or Saturday, 11am until 2pm (between these times is fine). Or email Joi Jones (Secretary) secretgarden730@gmail.com for more information. Wish Park: The community garden here, near Saxon Road, was started five years ago by a group now called Friends of Wish Park. It has a small pond and vegetables are grown in raised beds. Work sessions are held on Wednesdays from 4pm to about 6pm, depending on the season and weather. All are welcome to come and help, occasionally or regularly, no experience or gardening expertise is required, and we provide gloves and equipment. The work varies according to the season and produce is shared amongst the helpers. Just turn up, or phone 01273 723695 / 708824 for more information.

Pop in to Hove Museum to see quirky automata, magical mechanical contraptions from the film Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, and fabulous flying machines: all among the wonderful inventions of Rowland Emett (1906-1990).

THE MAGICAL MACHINES OF ROWLAND EMETT 2 May to 6 September 2015 at the HOVE MUSEUM BRIGHTON MUSEUM & THE BOOTH MUSEUM Rowland Emett was a cartoonist for Punch magazine, artist, inventor and builder of whimsical, mechanical ‘Things’. Some of his more famous works are the car and inventions that appeared in the film Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. But to older generations his ‘Emettland’, ‘Much Baking Halt’, ‘Featherstone Kite’ and many other weird and wonderful mechanical devices stick in the memory. “The first principle in science is to invent something nice to look at and then decide what it can do.” – Rowland Emett. With a few exceptions like the Emett Clock in the Victoria Shopping Centre, Nottingham, and another clock in Basildon, there is little of his work on permanent display in the UK. Exhibitions of his machines can be seen in the US and Canada in both permanent and seasonal exhibitions but much in the UK is in private collections, only rarely being seen in public until now. In 1968 Emett designed the elaborate inventions of Caractacus Potts (played by Dick Van Dyke) for the film Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. When asked how he came up

The Little Dragon Carpet Sweeper, Rowland Emett

with his strange designs, Emett remarked: “It is a well known fact that all inventors get their first ideas on the back of an envelope. I take slight exception to this, I use the front so that I can incorporate the stamp and then the design is already half done.” The Exploratory Lunacycle has brought its moon rock samples to Hove Museum, and the Humbug Major is thinking of sweets! At our other venues, Featherstone Kite Flying Machine has swooped into Brighton Museum, and The Ornithologist is busy with birds and The Little Dragon Carpet Sweeper will be cleaning at the Booth Museum. You can see them all for FREE by becoming a member of the Royal Pavilion & Museums. Join today! Call 01273 295898 and receive some great benefits.

LOCAL NEWS... Local operator of Riverford, Stephen Spears proves his commitment to healthy eating for children...

Riverford Brighton Sponsor the Children’s Parade This year Riverford Brighton sponsored the Brighton Festival Children’s Parade and what an amazing day we all had. Having worked frantically for the weeks leading up to the big day I had not really imagined what it would be like leading such an amazing party through the streets of Brighton. I was humbled by the boundless talent, creativity and imaginations shown by the children, their teachers and assistants in the costumes and models they had made. We spoke to hundreds of people about Riverford and our ethical approach to chemical free organic foods. They could see our fresh veg and fruit boxes, try our tasty apples and discuss how a veg box would work for them. We are a local business, with all our drivers and admin staff living locally, which means we can provide exceptional service with a personal touch.I have always wanted to promote healthy cooking, recipe ideas for our wide and sometimes unusual range of veg, while promoting food events and local places to my customers. The easiest way to follow us locally is to Like our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/ RiverfordBrighton.

LOCAL gardening... Here is our monthly gardening feature written by Nareesa Sulaiman, a local garden designer...

In the garden... June 2015 Wouldn’t you like your garden to be full of flowers all through the summer months? There are now many choices of plants with a long flowering period. Here are a few of my favourites that work well in a sunny spot... Gaura lindheimeri - This airy, clump-forming plant has long arching stems bearing pink or white almost butterfly-shaped flowers. The stems continue to grow and arch over, producing flowers from early summer through until mid-autumn. Dianthus carthusianorum - My husband chose this plant and I have been pleasantly surprised by its form and its long flowering period. A mound of narrow green leaves gives rise to stalks bearing deep pink flowers. It does well in chalky soil and flowers from July to September. Verbena rigida - A smaller form than its more common cousin Verbena bonariensis, this verbena can be grown from seed. It grows to 60cm and flowers from July to late autumn, with long stems bearing clusters of small purple flowers. Salvia greggii ‘Purple Queen’ - Salvias are a large group of plants and include common sage. This particular variety has small oval leaves with deep purple flowers borne on long arching stems. It flowers continuously from late June right through until late October-November.

Dianthus carthusianorum

Erysimum ‘Bowles Mauve’ - Although this plant is relatively short-lived (about 5 years), its floriferous habit earns its keep in the garden. A clump-forming plant, up to 80cm in height, with extended stems bearing long wands of flowers from April through to September. Erigeron karvinskianus - Even though it is often found growing in cracks in the wall, this plant used to be hard to buy. Now more widely available, this small plant is amazingly good value in the garden. Once established, it produces masses of white and pink daisy-like heads from early summer through to late autumn. Geranium ‘Melinda’ - I am a great fan of hardy geraniums and this variety is new to my list of favourites. Forming a low mound of green leaves with upright stems bearing masses of pale pink flowers from May through to the end of August. Great places to visit The Garden House, Brighton A hidden secret right in the middle of Brighton! The Garden House is holding a plant fair on Saturday 6th June; a chance to buy plants as well as view the garden, plus they are serving food and drinks. £2.50 entrance, www.gardenhousebrighton.co.uk Happy Gardening! The first in a series of physiotherapy articles with advice from local physiotherapist Martina Bisping...

FOCUS ON PHYSIOTHERAPY: CALF MUSCLES Calves are important in all exercise, but especially when we accelerate and spring. Injuries are a common reason people stop exercising but are generally easy to treat. Types of calf injury Strains occur as a sudden pain during exercise. A seized muscle becomes slowly noticeable at the end or some time after exercising. Both make walking and exercising painful but go with the right care. Achilles tendon pain usually comes with over-exercising and means the tendon needs more rest between exercise. Calf tears are immediately very painful and stop you bearing weight on the affected leg. Prevention The best way to prevent calf injuries is to stretch before and after exercise: Hold the position as shown in the picture for forty seconds. Treatment The best treatment is gentle, regular stretching, three or four times a day, coupled with a gradual return to exercise. Massage softens calf muscles and alleviates pain. To self-massage, simply sit on the floor, place the calf on a pilates roller or wine bottle and gently roll the calf back and forth for a minute twice a day. About Martina Martina Bisping has been a chartered physiotherapist for twenty years and practises at the Shadi Danin Medi Spa in New Church Road. To contact Martina phone 01273 958478 or go to www.martina-bisping-physio.co.uk

Cashless Parking Options to Suit Everyone Drivers will not necessarily need a smartphone or internet access to pay for parking in Brighton & Hove once coin-operated ticket machines start disappearing from early summer. The council is reassuring people without iPhones they can still register for the PayByPhone scheme. It is easy to set up an account online, but you can also do it without the internet. Call 01273 458 458 using any type of phone. The touch tone keypad is used for securely entering a self-chosen PIN number, payment card details and phone number. An operator takes your car number. The council intends removing half the 1,200 cash parking machines to save £250,000 a year. But there will still be familiar payment methods available: • Using cash in remaining machines – at least one machine will remain in each street • On-street credit card machines • Using cards or cash in any of 150 city shops displaying a PayPoint sign. • Texting from older mobiles. You don’t need to register to pay in a shop. Simply go to the nearest PayPoint outlet with your car number and the location number on signs. See https://paybyphone.co.uk/parking/

LOCAL sports... Regular article about local exercise opportunities by West Hove resident Isobel Muir...

MID SUSSEX MARATHON WEEKEND The Mid Sussex Marathon Weekend is an event that takes place over the May bank holiday weekend. It is a series of three running races which can be run either individually or in sequence to make the full marathon distance. In past years I have only run the Haywards Heath 10 mile race on the Sunday, but this year I had signed up for the whole weekend which incorporates a 10 mile race in East Grinstead on Saturday, the Haywards Heath 10 miler on Sunday and a 10k race in Burgess Hill on Monday, adding up to the 26.2 miles of a marathon. The first race took place in a freezing East Grinstead (who’d have thought it was May). The course was 95% off road and very hilly, with plenty of stiles to climb. Thankfully the ground was dry, but this meant it was incredibly uneven and rutted which could be deathly for those without ankles of steel. However I developed massive blisters as I was sliding about inside my shoes so much. I run off road so seldom I didn’t even consider this possibility. This was one of the hardest

Artist/Illustrator

races I have ever run. Shame I had another to do the very next day! At least I knew what was in store on Sunday. Hilly again but mainly on road. Much preferable. The weather was still horrible, very cold and wet, but I got out there and gave it my best. It was very difficult to get going after yesterday. My legs were shot to pieces and the blisters were very sore but I made it through. The last race in Burgess Hill was blessedly short but once again mainly off road, so rutted and uneven underfoot again which my blisters weren’t happy about. Thankfully the sun had decided to make an appearance so this was a much more pleasant end to a cold couple of races. Somehow I won third place in the overall marathon weekend which was a nice surprise. The three day weekend is a very challenging but fun event which would suit runners of all abilities. I found it hard as I much prefer road and flat but any runner who is into trail running would probably find it a breeze, whether taking part in one, two or all of the races. On completion of the three races you get a very nice medal made up of the individual medals of each race, which was a nice touch and not something I’ve seen before. For more details about my life in exercise please visit my blog “IMFitHove”. Thanks. Happy exercising! isobelmuir@hotmail.com

Concerned about your home being sold to fund your future care fees? The Issue

You probably own your home as joint tenants if you are a couple and solely if you are single. For couples this means you own it wholly, jointly and severally. Ultimately therefore you do not own it 50:50 as you might have assumed. You actually own all of it together and when one partner dies the surviving partner owns it solely and absolutely. It is sole and absolute ownership that enables a property to be taken into consideration as an asset by the local authority and puts the property in danger of needing to be sold to fund care.

The Reality

The Law (C.R.A.G - charging for residential accommodation guide) allows local authorities to assess your assets to determine if you need to pay for your own care. Currently if you have assets above £23,250, you are on your own and require care, you will probably have to pay for it all - currently averaging around £800 per week. Savings, cash and income would be used first and then your property would need to be taken into consideration. You would be expected to pay for all of your care until such time as your assets were depleted to below the £23,250 threshold. You would then pay for a proportion of your care until your assets were below £14,250 - at which point all your future care would be paid for.

The Solution

For couples, simply by changing the way you own your property well in advance of any care considerations i.e from joint tenants to tenants in common and by setting up two Trusts within a properly structured Will at the same time will in most cases, prevent your home from being taken into account by the local authority altogether should you ever require care in the future.

The children and/or whoever else is also nominated as Trust beneficiaries for that particular Trust will subsequently have access to that half of the property when the surviving partner dies. The first half of the property then is 100% securely in Trust for the beneficiaries and will not be at risk. As a result of this simple strategy the survivor is protected from having to sell the property to pay for their care should they need it because it is not possible to sell just their half of the property and the Crag guidelines clearly state that the market value of half a property is £0. The second half of the property will then ultimately go into Trust for access by the nominated beneficiaries when the surviving partner eventually dies. The beneficiaries will at that stage have both halves safe and secure in Trust and will be able to share and dispose of the property according to the wishes of the settlors (the original owners of both halves). By leaving 1/2 the property into Trust on first death, the surviving partner can still sell the property to downsize if they wish and are not restricted in any way with regards to what they wish to do to or with the property - it simply means that it is safeguarded and therefore will definitely be able to be appointed to the chosen beneficiaries when the time comes. For sole owners immediately conveying at least half of your property into Trust well in advance of any care consideration and becoming a Trustee and primary beneficiary of the Trust with others nominated to become beneficiaries after your death is usually enough to take away the risk of the property being considered as an asset to be sold if care is required as the property is not absolutely owned by yourself anymore and again it is not possible to sell half a house or force a Trustee to do something that is not in the ultimate best interest of the Trust beneficiaries. Call us now on 01273 911142 for a friendly chat about how this strategy could be of real benefit to you and your family.

For sole owners the process is simply to set up a Trust now and convey at least 1/2 of your property into it which will produce the same result.

The Reasoning

When you own your home as tenants in common you actually own half each. When the first partner dies, they leave their half into their trust. The surviving partner is the Trustee of that Trust and also the primary beneficiary which means that they have complete control over the property and what happens to it.

Local NEWS... Local music event...

31 New local business...

MUSIC AT HOVE LAGOON GEORGE’S GEMS SUNDAY 5TH JULY Boundary road The Motor Neurone Disease Association (MNDA) is holding a fundraising event at the Big Beach Café, Hove Lagoon, on Sunday 5 July, 2.30-4.30pm.

Members of inChoir will sing uplifting modern music. There will also be an appearance by magician Matt Wainwright, a Member of the Magic Circle who performs a unique blend of close-up magic and pickpocketing. The concert will be free, but there will be a collection for MND and a big prize raffle. A large marquee will be erected if the weather is wet.

A new card and gift shop has been opened in Boundary Road this year, having first been a successful online business. Its owner, George Denyer, tells us more…

I started the business online with a very small selection of cards and gifts which I grew over the years. I always dreamed of opening my own shop and, after eight years, I finally achieved my dream and opened the doors of my very own shop, 52 Boundary Road, on 14 February 2015. We would like to be known as a shop where you can get unique boutique gifts that no other shop on Boundary Road offers. Currently, no other shop in the area offers what we have in stock. We also sell an extensive range of greeting cards. The quality is top of the range; however, we have deliberately priced them at the low end in order to receive returning customers. The feedback so far on our cards and gifts has been amazing; people say that we have a great selection and how inexpensive they are. The following quote from a customer sums us up. They said, “You have brought the Lanes to Boundary Road.” If any customer brings this article into the shop, George will give them 10% off any purchases.

Deadline for articles for the July edition of The West Hove Directory is 15th June 2015 Please send your articles to info@westhovedirectory.co.uk PLease mention west hove directory when responding to adverts

It gives us a brilliant showcase for our bread but also a way to further connect with our community, which is a key part of the social side of our business.” There are also plenty of things to keep the children happy, with a bouncy castle, face painting, competitions and games.
