John Williams lives in St Leonard’s Road and is a Consultant for Cambridge Weight Plan...
WEST HOVE
LOCAL PERSON – JOHN WILLIAMS John Williams lives in St Leonard’s Road and is a Consultant for Cambridge Weight Plan. How long have you lived in West Hove? I’ve lived for many years in West Hove (more than I care to admit); I was born in Brighton and brought up in South Portslade. What do you most like about the area? I like the fact that Hove nestles close to Brighton and remains the ‘quiet’ neighbour. When I was younger, we used to go clubbing in both Brighton and Worthing as we were right between the two, though getting home 5 before night buses existed was always an adventure. I feel lucky to live between the sea and the South Downs with some fascinating shops in between. My own neighbourhood in St Leonard’s Road is vibrant, alive and friendly, and was once described as being like “Downton Abbey meets the Mitchell bros ‘off of’ Eastenders”. I also like the fact that Hove has a reputation as one of the healthiest places in the UK and I love being a part of that, my aim has always been to help motivate people to bring out the best in themselves, both physically and emotionally.
Just look at me now! Unlike other weight loss options, you’re never on your own with Cambridge Weight Plan. You'll have your own Cambridge Consultant who will support you through every step of your weight loss journey and explain the very real benefits of our flexible programmes.
How did you become a Weight Plan Consultant? I reduced my own weight on the Cambridge Weight Plan and managed to reduce my waist size down to a stage that I could wear trousers I wore in my early 20s. I’m positive in nature and love to mentor people and I saw an opportunity to support people based on my own rewarding experience, and being an Independent Cambridge Weight Plan Consultant gave me the chance to prove it. Tell us more about Cambridge Weight Plan... The Plan itself is based on six Steps which use nutritionally balanced products and allowable every day food. As a Consultant I would see the client at regular intervals and help to guide and encourage them through each Step of the Plan. What is your top weight loss tip?

If a decision has been made to exercise, then combine it with a targeted eating plan that has a sound balance of nutrients, and creates diversity, using the senses of taste, touch and smell together with interesting colour combinations and endeavour to pair up with another person who can be supportive along the way and can present feedback, tips and suggestions. It can open the gates to success in losing weight, I tried this myself and found it so much easier than plodding along by myself. News of the forming of a new local group...
HOVE LAGOON SUMMIT The inaugural Hove Lagoon Summit was held at the Big Beach Café on 4th May, with a view to setting up a Friends of Hove Lagoon group. The packed meeting was attended by many different user groups including Norman Cook and Danny Stockland from the café, dog walkers, residents’ associations, Lagoon Watersports, the Model Yacht Club and the family who run the pirate attractions, as well as representatives from the council, Shoreham Port and developers Hyde Housing. Cllr Robert Nemeth arranged the meeting and said he was struck by how much local residents’ groups could achieve - The Level in Brighton received several million 9 pounds of public money for improvements, so he felt that Hove Lagoon could benefit in the same way. Toni Manuel, the council’s Seafront Development Manager, said that a “Friends Of” group would be very helpful to the council as it could suggest how Section 106 money from developers should be spent. Mark Drayton of the Trust for Developing Communities said that, with the austerity cuts coming, the Lagoon would be at the back of the queue without a “Friends Of” group. Representatives of other local groups spoke about the advantages of people getting together.

Issues raised included the dilapidated state of the playground, the graffiti wall and the ramps at the skate park, a shortage of parking and the need for the smaller Lagoon pond to be cleaned out. Toni Manuel told the meeting that outdoor gym equipment would go into the area by the Lagoon skate park before the school summer holidays begin and Robert Nemeth added that £40,000 worth of playground equipment was due to be installed. Some people were in favour of more attractions at the Lagoon, while others did not want overdevelopment they are happy with the Lagoon as it is and would not like its tranquillity spoiled. Another resident thought that tidying the place up and holding events for local people would be a good idea. Tom Shaw, Development Director of Hyde Housing, said that Hyde had withdrawn the application for the proposed 17-storey Sackville Tower on Kingsway due to people power. Hyde will also be submitting a new planning application for the PortZED site on Kingsway/ Basin Road North. They will talk to local groups over the next few months and each development will include £7,000-£10,000 per home in developer contributions to pay towards local schools and parks. A group of volunteers has now been formed to set up the Friends of Hove Lagoon. If you would like to help in any way, please contact Robert Nemeth at: robert.nemeth@brighton-hove.gov.uk.

WEST SUSSEX FUN RUN LEAGUE It’s all very well being fit physically but what use is that if mentally you’re not up for going out and doing anything? Mental fitness is just as important as physical fitness, perhaps even more so, as when you feel fine it’s much easier to just get on with a healthy life. Although I’m not into the myriad apps available to track physical activity, I do use two to help the mental side. The first is Peak. This is a brain training app that improves your focus, coordination, memory, emotion, problem solving, language and mental agility through a range of games. Each day Peak provides you with four games which you can keep playing until you’ve achieved the set number of points for the day. I have discovered that I am strongest13 at language (no surprise there) and emotion (great surprise there). The app allows you to compare yourself with others in your age category, or by profession. If you pay for the premium version you can choose which games you want to play each day (rather than being stuck with the four it gives you daily) and there are more in-depth statistics. I only have the free version but that gives me all I need. I’m not sure if this has actually made a difference to my brain but it’s a fun thing to do each day and it can’t do any harm!

The second, more important, app I’m using is Headspace. This app guides you through a series of meditations to help you relax and become more mindful. This all sounds a bit “hippyish” I agree, and I’m a total sceptic when it comes to this sort of thing, but I decided it was time to put my prejudices aside and just give it a try as I need something to help me be less anxious and try to garner a bit of self-esteem and confidence. Andy (the founder of the app) takes you through the techniques step by step and doesn’t make it at all like meditation or all the things I assumed, stereotypically, would happen. I have chosen the 10 minute sessions and have been doing them daily since December. I do feel it has helped me become more calm and care a bit less about things I can’t control (for example I am writing this having been asked to cover a colleague, which meant I had to change my plans for running - something I would have found stressful in the past). Perhaps soon my brain will match my body in terms of fitness? Here’s hoping! For more details about my life in exercise please visit my blog “IMFitHove”. Thanks. Happy exercising! isobelmuir@hotmail.com

Here is our monthly gardening feature written by Nareesa Sulaiman, a local garden designer...
WEST HOVE
IN THE GARDEN... JUNE 2016 June is a month when the late spring bulbs such as alliums and tulips give way to the early herbaceous perennials and summer bulbs, such as phlox and hemerocallis. Unfortunately, it is also a month when many weeds get going so there’s plenty to keep you busy... Add plant supports around any plants that have a tendency to grow up and then flop over, such as Cosmos, Sedums and Knautias. Placing supports now will hopefully pre-empt that falling-over phase. Feed plants that are in pots, as well as roses, with a high potassium plant fertiliser such as Tomorite tomato fertiliser or Toprose rose feed, to provide extra nutrients for improved 15 flower production. Prune shrubs and climbers that have just finished flowering such as Choisya and Clematis montana. ‘How to prune’ advice, specific to plant species, can be found on the RHS website. Look out for bindweed; I know many Phlox gardeners allow it to grow up a cane and then pull it Unfortunately, the same cannot be said of ground elder. out but I prefer not to let it get a hold in my garden. I keep a look out and pull it out wherever I find it; I have If only the leaves are pulled off, the roots form a dense mat just under the surface of the soil which can take heard that the roots do eventually weaken if you keep several hours of labour and a sturdy fork to make any removing it. impact. Again, my advice would be to keep removing as much of it as you can, roots included, and try your best not to let it take over. You can spray both bindweed and ground elder with Glyphosate but care must be taken not to let the spray fall on other plants. Keep watering during dry periods; water near the base of the plant rather than over the leaves, maximising water available to the roots. Adding a mulch such as woodchip, gravel or decorative slate also reduces water loss from the soil through evaporation. Feature Plant Phlox divaricata ‘Clouds of Perfume’ Phlox really does come into its own during June and July. I love the fragrance and, even though I have chosen this variety as it is an RHS medal winner, I love them all! Great places to visit A group of six houses around Preston Park, as well as Preston Manor walled garden, are opening their gates for viewing on Friday 10th and Saturday 11th June. I love having a nose around other people’s gardens! Cost £5 combined entry. www.ngs.org.uk Happy gardening! Nareesa

Food review of a local eatery...
NEW MENU AT THE CONNAUGHT IN HOVE STREET Over the years of reviewing - and of being generally in love with food - I’ve lived by a rule of thumb when perusing a menu: never order anything you can whip up yourself (unless you’re in Italy, in which case order everything you would normally cook at home and learn, learn, learn from the masters). Passed down by my mother, it’s a policy which has served me well, encouraging me to try everything from the beautiful to the bizarre. Equally, ordering from a specials board pushes me to eat not what my appetite necessarily craves, but what the chef suggests I19 ought to crave. On a warm (dare I even say hot?) Saturday evening in early May, I cart myself, my companion and my trusty methodology off to The Connaught, to see what the new menu at one of Hove’s favourite establishments has to offer. On the proviso that I’ll be tackling three courses, for my appetiser I eat lightly from the specials crispy salt and pepper squid - and the hungry carnivore opposite me devours chicken wings in spicy sriracha sauce. Continuing with these themes of land and sea, he orders a juicy 10oz rib eye steak served with triple cooked chips, candied banana shallots and fire roasted red peppercorn jus, whilst I opt for something I can never get right in my own kitchen: pan-fried sea bass fillets. Thank the gastro-gods for dishes like this! Two fillets of my favourite white fish crown a tower of herbcrushed new potatoes and seasoned spring greens. The fish skins are crisped to perfection and softened only slightly by the juice of a fresh lemon. A generous amount of crayfish butter sauce surrounds the tower, bearing both a light, citrus flavour and a pleasing chargrilled undertone. I spot a genius dessert which makes me wish I’d eaten all my courses in the wrong order: Gin & Tonic sorbet.
Food For Thought Buffets Cold finger buffet & Home made cakes.
Local business Scoop & Crumb have officially read and blown my mind. Floating somewhere between pudding and a frozen aperitif, the sorbet is hugely refreshing, served with a chocolate lattice perched proudly atop the third scoop. I walk away replete. Lovers of locally-sourced ingredients and haters of GM produce, the guys at The Connaught are dishing up exactly what I believe local people want and need from a pub: decent portions of very good food which avoids the trap of pretension, but still manages to impress. Quality Care in Your Own Home “Care when you need it, peace of mind when you don’t” Here at Coastal Home Care, we understand the difficulties of coming to terms with the sometimes harsh fact that you may need to think about having some Quality Care at Home. Supporting people to live within the comfort of their own homes whilst receiving Quality Care at Home is something that Coastal Home Care is all too familiar with. Here are some things going on locally that you should be aware of...
BIRDS OF A FEATHER NEW EXHIBITION AT HOVE MUSEUM Until 29 November (daily, except Wednesdays, 10am-5pm; Sunday 2-5pm) Free admission Birds were the focus of many enthusiasts and collectors in the 19th century. The drawings, paintings and collections they created sought to identify and describe all species of birds but many were also intended as works of art in 31 their own right. The paintings, books and birds in this display all come from the collection of the Booth Museum of Natural History, here in Brighton & Hove. They show not only the desire to group and organise, but also the beauty and characteristics of the subject matter. Hove Museum, 19 New Church Road

Here we feature a local author...
LOCAL AUTHOR – TONY MAIN Tony Waddell, who writes under the name of Tony Main, lived in Hove as a teenager during the 1950s. His children’s adventure story Ancell’s Quest is out now. What part of Hove did you live in? Along Kingsway by the Lagoon. What do you remember about the area? The slightly daunting red brick façade of the then Brighton Technical College where I was a student, and also at that time the very modern King Alfred swimming pool with its top diving board that made the pool look small. 35
Dancing to Syd Dean’s band at The Regent Ballroom was a good night out. Back then the old power station at Aldrington Basin smelled a bit on windless days – not so now, but sadly little remains of the West Pier as a reproachful reminder of its former glory. Today my grandchildren who live in Hove love the Lagoon paddling pool. Watching them leaping about reminds me of running down to the beach on many a summer’s evening for a swim all those years ago.

Tell us more about your book... Ancell’s Quest is the story of a timid, dreaming hedgehog, who to his dismay is called to sail to the rescue of orphan children kidnapped by the merciless pirate Laughing Jack. But Ancell is no heroic adventurer and puts the motley crew of colourful and oftencomical animal sailors in peril of an island of evil, storm, shipwreck and capture. Will Ancell summon the courage to risk his life in a land set ablaze to save the children? And will the animals’ ally, Hector, the estuarine crocodile with an unfortunate sense of humour, ever get to enjoy a nap in peace? I hope that both boys and girls will warm to the somewhat oddball band of animal heroes, and now that children seem to face the pressures of ever more tests and exams, they will enjoy the adventures of Ancell, who for all his failings, triumphs by holding on to his dreams. Where are you living now? At Littlehampton, where I lived as a child. Still by the sea and the Downs. Have you got any more books planned? Nearing a final draft. Ancell’s Quest has taken Ancell to the Southern Continent, but he and the children must battle Laughing Jack in the Amazon rainforest and at sea before the children at last find a loving home they never dared dream of. Ancell’s Quest (ISBN 978 1784622 039), £7.99, can be ordered from bookshops and online booksellers or currently from Troubador Publishing Ltd at a discount. Ebook £1.99

A reader’s letter continues the debate on Hove Library...
Success for Hove Park School...
HOVE LIBRARY MOVE MAKES SENSE
HOVE PARK SCHOOL REACH NATIONAL FOOTBALL FINAL Hove Park’s Year 9 Under 14 football squad were not only the pride of their school in May, but of Brighton & Hove too as they played in the final of the ESFA National Schools Cup at the Madejski Stadium at Reading FC.
Councillor Robert Nemeth has again got hold of the wrong end of the stick with regard to Hove Library. Never at any point was the Labour council going to close Hove Library. It is simply going to move the library to another handsome building a little way along New Church Road, and will in fact be nearer to a convenient bus stop. The last time the Labour council was going to move the library to a half empty Hove Town Hall so that the children’s library could be enlarged and after-school clubs could be arranged. The Carnegie Foundation wished the council well and said it recognised its Victorian buildings were no longer fit for purpose. Meanwhile a huge amount of money has been spent on the building. The new proposals make much more sense and will enhance the life of the library, and the museum and café, for generations to come. Despite being defeated by an incredibly strong team from Thomas Telford School, getting so far in a national competition is an amazing achievement. The Hove Park boys have had an incredible season, also becoming Sussex champions after winning the County Cup final earlier this month. A coach full of fans including students, teachers and parents travelled to Reading and despite the heavy rain created an atmosphere of support and excitement in the stands. Hove Park were given a standing ovation at the end and the boys were commended on their performance as well as being very gracious in defeat. Team manager Mark Pulling said: “It’s a fantastic achievement to have reached the final. In this competition we play against teams with a lot of professional academy players representing their school sides. Our side only has one academy player so the boys should be immensely proud of themselves.”

Our next objective is for outdoor gym equipment for everyone and so far we have raised just under £3,000 to go towards the fund. The event is organised by a small group of volunteers and we DESPERATELY need help for the day to happen. Can you get involved?

News of a new choir starting in West Hove...
SHINING A LIGHT FOR DISABILITY We are pleased to announce the launch of Shine Your Light Choir, Brighton and Hove’s first pan-disability choir for adults with disabilities and health conditions of all kinds, and for carers. The choir, which is supported by Scope and People’s Health Trust, is part of Scope’s five Local People Programmes across England aimed at asking disabled people what change is needed in their communities and providing resources for them to address the issues that matter to them most. Christian Holder and Tom Isaacs felt that more could be done locally to help all disabled people access the happiness and health benefits of singing. Having a disability can be “isolating and lonely” and singing “builds 43 feel self-esteem and confidence” as well as “making you good!” Josephine, who has lupus, fibromyalgia and is a wheelchair user, says: “Even when I am in a lot of pain I feel much better after singing, but there are not many fully accessible choirs.”

If you needed help to resist dropping litter...
DROP LITTER – PICK UP A FINE! People caught dropping litter, flytipping and allowing their dogs to foul in public places anywhere in Brighton & Hove now face £75 on-the-spot fines. Enforcement officers, employed by private company 3GS Environmental Solutions, began patrolling in the city in March. The new service supports the council’s strategy to encourage everyone to produce less waste and recycle more. It aims to tackle antisocial and illegal behaviour, improve the environment and reduce waste clean-up and disposal costs. Each year the council receives dozens of complaints from residents about fly-tipping, litter and other antisocial 45 behaviour and the issues are often raised at residents’ groups and community meetings. The scheme was approved by councillors last year and 3GS was awarded the contract following a competitive tendering process. It covers fly-tipping, littering, flyposting, graffiti, dog fouling and disposing of commercial waste illegally. The enforcement officers wear body cameras to gather evidence and identify offenders. The council follows Government guidelines to ensure that any fines are issued responsibly.
Councillor Gill Mitchell, Chair of the Environment, Transport and Sustainability Committee, said: “We are often asked to take a tougher stance around antisocial behaviour such as dropping litter, fly-posting, dog fouling and graffiti. This enforcement scheme, along with the publicity and education programme, will tackle the problem head-on and send out a strong message that deliberate antisocial behaviour which blights our city will not be tolerated.” Those issued with a fixed penalty notice who refuse to pay could end up in court and not only be ‘named and shamed’ but also landed with a much higher penalty and possibly court costs.
