We love to meet local people. Meet Elaine Evans from the Portland Road area...

WEST HOVE

LOCAL PERSON - ELAINE EVANS Elaine Evans lives near Portland Road and in 2014 she was awarded the British Empire Medal (BEM) for services to the arts. She is a Regency Patron of the Royal Pavilion and Museums Foundation and sits on the Brighton & Hove Commemorative Plaques Panel and Hove Civic Society committee. How long have you lived in the area? I’ve lived and worked in Westbourne ward since 1948. After attending Hove County Grammar School for Girls, I worked for a millionaire in Princes Square for six months (an interesting experience!), then as a secretary for Hove Borough Council. After training to teach English as a 5 foreign language, I started my own school for teenagers, the East Sussex School of English, which was based in Portland Road from 1976 onwards. Sadly ill health (meningitis) forced my retirement in 1999. Tell us more about your work with the Royal Pavilion Foundation… The Royal Pavilion is the most wonderful building in the city, and I always took my students there for tours. I was so proud when their exhibition “Chinese Whispers” won a national award at the Museums & Heritage Awards in

2009. My niece, Dr Sarah Cheang, also a Hove resident, was a joint curator. I signed up as a Regency Patron in 2010, and love supporting the Foundation. When I received the BEM, the ceremony took place in the Red Drawing Room. You also volunteer at a museum in Spain. How did that come about? In 1982 my late husband Steve and I bought an apartment in Villajoyosa (Costa Blanca’s best kept secret) and loved visiting the museum and other historic sites in the area during our annual holiday. In 2012 I returned to Villajoyosa and met the new curator by chance. I became a volunteer, helped with translations on their blog and got involved in some projects in Steve’s memory (his grandfather was Spanish). The most recent is the restoration of the Tower of Sant Josep, a wonderful Roman funerary monument dating from the second century AD and the largest in Spain. (Some striking photos on the internet.) What do you like about living in West Hove? It is convenient and not as busy as Brighton. Near the seafront, good local shops and bus links to Brighton’s facilities.

Is there anything you would like to change? YES! An impossible dream, but replace all the pavements in the city. I had two bad falls last year, even though I was walking normally, so now I have to walk head down looking at every single paving stone. Horrible! Other towns aren’t like this. WHD March 2016

BOUNDARY ROAD One of the hospital parades passing Franklin Road, around 1914. These parades were held annually, usually on a Sunday, and were organised by trade unions and local working men’s associations. With a band, the procession toured the main streets collecting funds for the benefit of the hospital. The custom died out with World War One.

CITY READS 2016 – THE GOOD

“The Good Son” is a bitter-sweet tale, set in 1980s Belfast. Mickey Donnelly is smart, which isn’t a good thing in his part of town. Despite having a dog called Killer and being in love with the girl next door, everyone calls him ‘gay’. It doesn’t help that his best friend is his little sister, Wee Maggie, and that everyone knows he loves his ma more than anything in the world. Sarah Hutchings, Artistic Director of City Reads, said: “Choosing one book for a whole city to read, share and celebrate is a wonderful thing because it brings people together. This outstanding debut from Brighton-based Northern Irish writer Paul McVeigh was the perfect choice as this year marks the centenary of the Easter Rising, a rebellion that led to the eventual signing of the Anglo-Irish Treaty and the creation of Northern Ireland, which is where the story is set. I defy anyone not to fall in love with its protagonist Mickey Donnelly. I hope you love it as much as we do.”

Folowing on from our January article about the Oral History Project...

WEST HOVE

STORIES OF TEENAGE LOVE, LOSS AND REBELLION In our January issue we shared the news of a Brighton & Hove oral history project which has been supporting students from Longhill School to recruit, interview and photograph people with a story to tell about being a teenager in Brighton & Hove in the 40s, 50s & 60s. Since then, the Giddy project has staged four Memory Days attracting 33 people to come and tell their stories of giddy love, loss and rebellion – all of which will be used to create a free oral history app. Using GPS navigation technology, the Giddy app will take users on an alternative walking tour of the city, punctuated by the personal histories straight from the mouths of the people who lived them. 11 Histories such as those told by the man who, after a gig in 1969, met Jimi Hendrix in a beaten-up MG at the Dome stage door. He recounts how, after having his tambourine signed by the man himself, he was chased by a gaggle of screaming fans through the North Laine, narrowly missing being mobbed. Also, the lady who told of finding first love and first kisses in Preston Park at the age of 13, and was subsequently forbidden by her parents to see her boyfriend again. Forty years later she managed to find him online and they’ve been together ever since.

And the man who described his passion for fashion and music and how it led him to Brighton clubland and eventually discovering his gay sexuality. Carina Westling of The Nimbus Group, the Brighton arts collective behind Giddy, says: “We wanted to use digital technology to create something that celebrates the stuff of life that unites us as humans; that reveals our individuality but also highlights universal themes associated with youth that span the generations. Oral history offers a perspective of the past that stands outside the received wisdom of the history books. Our intention for Giddy is to bring history to life in such a way that the young (or not so young) people who hear these stories will never look at older people in quite the same way again.” Giddy will be launching as part of Brighton Festival in May. Here is our monthly gardening feature written by Nareesa Sulaiman, a local garden designer...

WEST HOVE

IN THE GARDEN... MARCH 2016 Now that the spring bulbs are in flower, it’s a good time to think about shrubs that will complement those lively colours. Here are a few shrubs that look good in the spring... Choisya ternata An all-round good performer, growing up to a maximum of 2.5 metres (there are smaller varieties) in sun and partial shade, this evergreen shrub forms a lovely green backdrop to summer-flowering perennials. In late spring, it has an abundance of highly-fragrant white flowers. I especially like Choisya ternata ‘Sundance’, whose yellowgreen leaves are great for bringing light into a shady spot. Maximum 1.5-2.5m in height x 1.5-2.5m spread. 13

Corylopsis pauciflora Native to SE Asia, this spring shrub is seldom seen in UK gardens and yet it works very well in smaller or shady gardens. The bare stems give rise to hanging clusters of pale yellow flowers in early spring soon after last month’s feature plant, Hamamelis, has finished flowering. Looks good with purple/blue spring flowers. Maximum 1.5m height x 2.5m spread. Skimmia japonica A really useful plant for adding structure to the garden when you don’t want a larger plant. Skimmias come in

Lonicera fragrantissima (winter honeysuckle)

male, female and hermaphrodite forms. All have attractive spring flowers. Female and hermaphrodite plants have berries, although female plants need a male plant nearby to form berries. Maximum 1.0m height x 1.02.0m spread. Stachyurus praecox This award-winning large deciduous shrub has strings of pale yellow flowers that hang off the branches in early spring. Another good shrub for a partly shaded border. Maximum 3m height x 3m spread. Viburnum tinus ‘Eve Price’ A garden staple, this evergreen shrub forms a dark green backdrop to summer perennial plants but it earns its keep with clusters of small pink-white flowers in spring which give rise to small black fruits. Maximum 3m height x 3m spread. Feature plant Lonicera fragrantissima Too untidy to earn its place amongst good backdrop plants but this shrub smells amazing when in flower, as it is at the moment. If you have a large garden you can hide this amongst other shrubs and then cut branches and bring into the house so that you can enjoy the wonderful scent! Great places to visit Palatine School Gardens, Worthing, West Sussex This school garden is truly inspiring. Go along and show your support, Sunday 27th March, £4. www.ngs.org.uk Happy gardening! Here is an update from the Kingsway & West Hove Residents’ Association….

WEST HOVE

KINGSWAY & WEST HOVE RESIDENTS’ ASSOCIATION These are some of the issues discussed at our February meeting, attended by about 90 people. Kingsway developments The development brief for Aldrington Basin approved by the council in 2013 says: “On the south side of the Kingsway, in order to protect the amenity of the West Hove townscape, any development shall not exceed the height of the recently built Vega flats.” This is a very important detail to go back to when new planning applications are submitted. We believe the PortZED site 15 (to the east of Pets Corner) is now being sold to the Hyde Group (who also propose to build the Sackville Tower). An application to vary the planning conditions has been approved, enabling site clearance. Britannia House, next to The Gather Inn (near Hove Lagoon), has had planning permission since 2006 for two and a half floors over the existing office building. New owners have applied to change the design, with a bigger penthouse on the top floor. Residents at the meet-

Renu Your Bath Baths restored to NEW without removal. One day service. Any colour

The proposed design for the corner of Kingsway and Erroll Road

ing agreed that the new scheme was unattractive and overbearing compared to the previous art deco design. KAWHRA have submitted an objection. Work has begun on the site at the junction of Kingsway and Erroll Road. This will be a showroom with eight flats above. Residents’ parking concerns were acknowledged by the Planning Committee, resulting in a legal agreement for a travel information pack for new residents and a developer contribution of £6,000 for pedestrian improvements. KAWHRA is concerned about the 17-storey building proposed for the Sackville Hotel site because the overall look of the seafront is important to all residents. The City Plan specifies that buildings of six storeys or more may be acceptable along Kingsway as far west as Wish Road. We believe 17 storeys is excessive and ignores its context. All residents at the meeting agreed. To comment on this application, go to the planning register on the council website and search for application number BH2015/04414. Oil seepage A couple of years ago, an oily odour became apparent in the harbour area. Shoreham Port identified the probable cause as a long-disused gas works beneath the port’s land. The port has agreed to carry out further tests and is expected to present the outcome and potential solutions in April.

After decades of talk about the fate of King Alfred...

KING ALFRED DEVELOPMENT PLANS We are at last hearing proper debate about the King Alfred project and this is music to my ears.

19

Some simply want to see the new facility built – urgently. Others think that the proposed enabling development is too big. Some don’t want any enabling development on the site at all. Many, including me, want to see a 50m pool. Others actually quite like the current building and want to see it refurbished (again). When I started the campaign with Mike Weatherley MP

The proposed design for the King Alfred Leisure Centre

to get a new public sports centre for Hove, we wanted to see a quality facility on the current site alongside however many flats were required to pay for it. We were very successful in persuading Brighton & Hove City Council to kickstart the project but, once this principle of development had been established, the council stopped listening. For some bizarre reason, the swimming clubs weren’t even consulted when the specification was written. Nobody had the courtesy to see the bowlers, weight-lifters or dancers. Much was decided from behind a desk. This was wrong. As it goes, I do think that we have reached something not a million miles away from the ideal solution. There is much good about what has been proposed by Rob Starr and Crest Nicholson. Most importantly, the sports centre is to be breathtaking. It will be the pride of Sussex once completed. The height and number of flats are lower than those of the Frank Gehry scheme which of course has planning permission already (18 vs 26 storeys, and 565 vs 751 flats). And the finances of the scheme actually stack up. If we are to get it spot-on then we need more public input. As the Conservative representative on the Project Board, I have been able to air my concerns behind the scenes. Residents of West Hove have not had this opportunity. The planning process itself, which is likely to start mid-2016 and conclude mid-2017, gives opportunity to comment but it is always better to start earlier, before an application is finalised. As Wish residents know, I certainly don’t shy away from listening to what the public has to say. Tell me on the bus. Stop me in the street. Write to me. Send me an email (robert.nemeth@brighton-hove.gov.uk). Send me a telegram. I don’t mind. If I am going to represent your views on the biggest singlesite development in Hove’s history, I need to know what you think. Robert Nemeth, Councillor for Wish ward WHD March 2016

POLICE & CRIME COMMISSIONER SPEAKS AT THE WEST HOVE FORUM The Police & Crime Commissioner (PCC), Katy Bourne, attended the latest meeting of the West Hove Forum and explained her role. PCCs came into being about 3½ years ago, to replace the old police authorities. Before that, police priorities would be set by the Government. The Sussex Police Authority had 17 members who ensured that the priorities set by the Government were carried out by the Chief Constable. However, some felt they didn’t connect with the public. The PCC sets police priorities which must reflect the wishes of local people. She is also responsible for the police budget - £250 million annually. This has to23be cut by £30-35 million and Sussex Police will be smaller in numbers by 2020. The senior policing team in Sussex are designing a new local policing model and they are currently looking at neighbourhood policing. Crime types have been changing, with much theft and fraud now online, and many historic cases of child abuse reported. Katy Bourne said that local neighbourhood policing needs to adapt to these changes. Some PCSOs have taken on extra responsibility, without getting paid for it. They may be given more powers around licensing

and investigation. When the new role is decided, they will get paid more. There will be fewer PCSOs, but we don’t yet know how many will be lost. The PCC has been given permission to raise the police precept of the council tax by £5 per year, to pay for an additional 45 police officers who can investigate digital crime. The next West Hove Forum meeting will be at 2pm on Wednesday 23rd March at Muriel House, Ingram Crescent. If you would like to attend on behalf of a residents’ association, business or other organisation, please email us at westhoveforum@gmail.com or phone the Chair, Ron Gurney, on 01273 385361.

WEST HOVE

Here is another date for the diary...

WEST HOVE’S ANNA LINSTRUM DIRECTS JACKIE THE MUSICAL Anna Linstrum of St Leonard’s Road directs Jackie The Musical which runs at Theatre Royal Brighton from 5th to 9th April. Tell us about Jackie The Musical... It’s a show packed full of 1970s songs, and is inspired by Jackie magazine, which was published from the 70s to the 90s. It’s set in the present day, with flashbacks to the 70s, and our heroine is Jackie, a woman of a certain age with a recent divorce and a teenage son. Her younger self comes back to help her mend her broken heart and 25 give her courage for the future. It’s funny, heart-warming, and features nearly twenty cracking songs, including big dance numbers choreographed by Arlene Phillips, and we’ve a cast of 21 who sing their heart out. My job as director is to shape the overall show so that it’s the best night out you’ve had in ages! Are you old enough to have been a Jackie reader yourself? Yes, I’m over 40 (how did that happen?), so I read the magazine in the 1980s. I wish I’d kept my old copies

now – but who knew I’d be doing a musical based on it?? I loved it, especially the fashion and the personality quizzes that helped you work out what sort of person you were. What sort of songs will be featured? We’ve got brilliant songs from David Cassidy, The Osmonds, David Essex, Mud, and loads of others which I won’t give away as I want them to be surprises, but they’re all big hits and all songs you’d recognise straight away. The writer has woven them in cleverly so they fit the story and the characters’ situations (a bit like Mamma Mia), and this makes it much more satisfying to work on and to watch. And they’re all so catchy, it’s great fun but driving me mad at night-time – try getting Tina Charles’ “I Love To Love” out of your head once it’s stuck in there…! How can we get tickets? In person from Theatre Royal Brighton Box Office in New Road or online at www.atgtickets.com/brighton or by phone 0844 871 7650 (calls cost 7p per minute plus your phone company’s access charge).

Here we feature an excellent local business based in Boundary Road...

A NEW KITCHEN FOR THE SPRING What could be nicer than a new kitchen for the spring! Improving the home is a priority for many of us at this time of year, but installing a kitchen from scratch is not for the faint-hearted! The work can be disruptive, messy and inconvenient, involving a range of workmen including carpenters, tilers, plumbers, plasterers and electricians. Because of the number of people involved in a full kitchen renovation, budgets can easily go awry and if the estimates are to be believed almost one quarter of kitchen installations go over budget. One way to minimise costs is to opt for a kitchen refresh as opposed to a full refurbishment. Updating cupboard doors, worktops and fixtures and fittings minimises the 29 work required, and a company like Dream Doors will cost out and arrange all the elements of the job including the workmen, in advance, so budgets are all agreed up front. Dream Doors offer a huge range of door styles and colours, made from the best available materials and fully guaranteed. Worktops can be replaced or overlaid onto existing tops, again reducing mess and disruption. To help you get exactly what you need, Dream Doors designers ask our clients to consider fundamental questions including:

• • • • • •

Why do you need a new kitchen? What do you like about your current kitchen? What do you dislike about your current kitchen? What preference do you have for the look and feel of your new kitchen? What are your storage needs? Apart from cooking, will you use your kitchen for anything else?

With this information Dream Doors can provide a quotation perfect for your needs. A brochure is available on our website or you can call or visit our showroom in Boundary Road, Hove.

Nathalie’s Monthly Health TIP

SPRING INTO SUMMER! The Spring Equinox falls on March 20th this year. Aside from the tell-tale usual changes in nature, an equinox also triggers in us a lot of deep changes that occur at cellular level, making it an ideal time for a detox. As our cells naturally attempt to shed the extra sodium, calcium and toxins they’ve accumulated all winter, this process can be challenging for many, bringing headaches, bloating, rashes, mucous discharge, etc. One way to avoid this is to make sure that toxins are efficiently eliminated through the liver, colon, lungs and skin. So here’s some advice to gently help clear this excess for the next 2 weeks: • Drink 2 litres of water slowly through the day – still, room temperature. Add a few drops of lemon33to your water first thing in the morning. • Simplify your diet: exclude processed food and go back to nature. • Try going vegetarian or vegan. • Cut out dairy and gluten to reduce the mucous and bloat. • Daily dry-brush your skin followed by hot/cold showers. • Do an enema or colonic to clear up sluggish bowels.

Practise some meditation and deep breathing daily to help spring clean your mind too J Happy Equinox, everyone! NEW STAR WARS TOY DISPLAY AT HOVE MUSEUM Hove Museum in New Church Road has a new display of rare Star Wars items loaned from private collections. These include very early figures and ‘dioramas’ (displays) from the first series of Star Wars movies, such as a Land of the Jawas set, released by toy company Kenner in the 1970s. The museum already displays a well-known collection of historic toys in its Wizard’s Attic area, including a rare model of an AT-AT, the feared combat vehicle from the first Star Wars film trilogy. The new display, which will sit in the museum’s Collectors’ Corner and has been loaned by two of the museum’s staff, includes more unusual items, in particular figures, from the second Star Wars trilogy. These demonstrate how merchandising developed between the two film series, as the array of characters grew and increasingly diverse options were explored. The new display brings things right up to date with a recent Disney Star Wars/Cars crossover range. It will continue until 17 May. The museum is open daily, except Wednesdays, from 10am to 5pm (Sunday 2-5pm). 35

Learn something new...bake some bread...

LEARN TO BAKE BREAD WITH STONEHAM BAKEHOUSE Have you always wanted to make your own bread, but need a bit of help? Simon Cobb of Stoneham Bakehouse now runs a monthly Everyday Bread workshop at The Hive in Stoneham Park to teach you the basic skills you need. There are only four participants in each workshop, so Simon, a former school teacher, can give you plenty of individual attention. He is very knowledgeable and enthusiastic, and gives you some great tips. Knowing a bit of the science behind bread-making can help you to understand the method and get it right. 37 During the evening, you will learn how to make two different loaves – an everyday loaf and a light malthouse loaf – as well as bread rolls. Simon teaches the basics of fermentation, kneading, shaping, scaling and baking, in a very relaxed atmosphere. You can have fun playing around with the dough to experiment with different shapes for your bread rolls, eg knots and plaits, and decorating them with seeds. Most people are put off making their own bread, as it seems to be such a long process, but for much of this

time you are just waiting for the dough to rise or bake, so you can get on with other things. Once the hard work is done and you are waiting for your bread to bake, Simon serves up a delicious vegetarian soup to accompany some flatbread you’ve just made, and you get to have a good chat with your fellow participants. It’s great to go home at the end of the evening with a bag full of warm bread and rolls! The workshops run from 6pm to 10pm on a Monday evening and cost £50. This includes the ingredients, recipes and refreshments. The next workshops are on March 21st, April 18th and May 16th. There is also a bun workshop on 7th March. Stoneham Bakehouse is a community interest company, so any profits go back into community projects. There are now more than 20 volunteer bakers, and their community work includes healthy food and bread workshops with Happitots Preschool and Hove Junior School. To order bread from Stoneham Bakehouse, email: orders@stonehambakehouse.org.uk, phone 07786 927110, or fill in a form at The Hive. Simon and his volunteers are looking for a permanent home, so that they can do more baking. If you can help with this, or would like more information on the workshops, please contact Simon at: stonehambakehouse@gmail.com , or visit stonehambakehouse.org.uk.
