LOCAL PERSON – LUCY “ELLE Lucy “Elle J” Small lives in Portland Avenue. She has a radio show on Reverb 97.2FM, DJs and is the founder and director of Funk The Family and Funk The Format music and arts festivals, in Hove Park on 28th and 29th May, respectively. How long have you lived in West Hove? I moved to Portland Avenue two years ago. Before that I lived in Poets Corner for seven years. Who is the most interesting artist you’ve met? Before the radio and music festivals, I was a music journalist and interviewed many artists. I was pretty star-struck by Janet Jackson and Outkast’s André 3000. Jay Kay of Jamiroquai was definitely a character. Meeting rapper Lil Jon in Miami was possibly the most memorable. He sent a Hummer limousine to the hotel for the photographer and I, then greeted us by pouring tequila down our throats. I was about 24 years old so didn’t object! How did you come to found Funk The Family? I’m a parent and I love music; this is the case for a lot of people in Brighton & Hove. I felt our city was lacking a credible all-day festival that focused on really high

E J” SMALL Why should people go to Funk The Family? For the vibes! One of the reasons Funk The Family is so successful and sells out every time (1,000 people the first year at Hove Lagoon, 4,500 people at Hove Park) is the festival’s reputation for creating a brilliant atmosphere. We’ve also been praised by families who love the fact the festival is in an enclosed space and feel safe. Plus we have free trapeze workshops and circus shows, archery, yoga, DJ Format, Vula from Basement Jaxx, King Porter Stomp, Professor Elemental and tons more!

Soul II Soul and Norman Jay are launching Funk The Format festival… It’s gonna be amazing! This is my first adults-only festival and the full line-up is incredible. We’ve got Rodney P, Jamie Rodigan, Nubiyan Twist, Robert Luis from Tru Thoughts and too many more to mention. Plus it’s a bank holiday so good for recovering! How can we get tickets?

quality music and brilliant, unusual entertainment for all the family. I’d organised two very successful community festivals in Stoneham Park, so doing my own thing was a natural progression.

LION MEWS A BRIEF HISTORY During the late 1800s the Dukes of Portland loaned money to Gallard & Williams who were the original developers of an estate in Aldrington described as West Hove and West Brighton. The developers defaulted on the loan in 1888 and the 6th Duke retook ownership of the estate, selling off smaller parcels of land from 1890 through to the 1920s, one of which was the stables, Lion Mews, sold to the Westerman family in 1922. Within our community, five of the shops on the west side of Richardson Road were converted from the former stables offices of Lion Mews. Current businesses on the frontage are a salon, florist, off-licence, watchmaker and sandwich shop. Inside the Mews there are a dog parlour, joinery manufacturer, an outside caterer, plumbing & heating engineer, carpenter & locksmith, flooring contractor, upholsterer and a printer, otherwise used as storage. Above these business units are 12 residential flats that were at one time the homes of the fly-cab jobmasters. The fly-cabs, similar to today’s taxis, were a mode of personal transport like the horse buses that ran along New Church Road to Brighton. These connected to

The most famous business within the Mews was of Brian Parnell who took over Lion Garage in 1971 until his death in 2007, and operated the petrol pumps on the forecourt until 1995 when pumps had to change from gallons to litres. The longest business to survive here is Higgins Joinery which commenced in 1959. Steve Moore

Lion Mews’ first mention was in papers and maps from 1881; more buildings came along thereafter such as St Philip’s Church and buildings to the north. On the north-west corner was the blacksmith’s shop which became Widdecomes Dairy, currently a carpenter’s workshop, accessed from what was Naismith Lane until 1996 when it was renamed St Philip’s Mews. Avon’s Dog & Cat Grooming was preceded by the ‘Gay Dogs’ & Poodle Parlour ceasing in 1979. The florist, changing owners, was at one time the Post Office until it moved to Martin’s, later to be lost completely. G Dinnage, Community editor of the Richardson Road Facebook Page. Here is a local charity event taking place in the area in May...

BRIGHTON BIG BALLS – 8TH MAY Fast becoming one of the south coast’s favourite events - Brighton Big Balls - don’t laugh! -is a serious event. Brighton Big Balls began in 2013 after organiser Dave Samuel had a personal cancer scare. Coming from an event background he thought he should do something more to get men to talk about men’s health issues, and what better way than with a silly race. Brighton Big Balls is in aid of male cancer treatment and prevention – specifically prostate, penile and testicular cancer - and supports male cancer charity Orchid. Taking place on 8th May, Brighton Big Balls sees entrants stumble over the beaches of Hove carrying two large gym balls. The entrants must finish with their own 11balls. Apart from that, there are no rules! Local businesses also donate to the charity in return for putting their own obstacles on route and organised chaos is the order of the day. The event is clearly aimed at men but lots of women also take part to show support. However ladies are asked to wear a comedy moustache and run in a “manly manner”. The 2015 the event was supported by a host of celebs, including Brighton & Hove Albion players, and Norman Cook and Zoe Ball.

25% Off Nursery Fees

Registration costs £25. Entrants are then expected to raise sponsorship via the charity JustGiving page. For further details and to register, visit: www.brightonbigballs.com

Food review of a local eatery...

THE STONEHAM - FROM SNAPCHAT TO STOMACH In our social media-obsessed society, the first bite of an attractive meal is often preceded by a heavily filtered and hashtagged Instagram photo. We satisfy our followers before we satisfy our stomachs. No judgement here; I’ve been guilty on occasions. But whatever your stance on this new norm, it can’t be denied that the “social media effect” is challenging kitchens to significantly up their game, and pubs like The Stoneham are successfully rising to the occasion. To test out the new menu, I book in on a random Friday night, happily coinciding with the return of their21 popular vegetarian and vegan weekend. Co-head chefs Evalina and Carol regularly offer “Meat Free Mondays” to satisfy a growing local demand - not in neglect of their carnivorous customers (who will always be generously catered for) but in recognition of the exciting challenges that lie within veggie and vegan cuisine. The presentation of my first course - a neat quinoa and roasted vegetable stack - is gorgeous. Beside it, a delicate courgette ribbon hugs itself around fresh

Photo by Rosie Greenaway Italian salad leaves, and a balsamic reduction zigzags the plate. Fleetingly, I contemplate whether it might actually be too beautiful to spoil...then I get a grip of myself and demolish the tower with swift fork action. Ingredients tumble willingly: first pea shoots and artichoke hearts, then capers, sun-dried tomatoes, olives, sultanas and caramelised onions. It’s a tasty creation, if a little filling for a starter. A moth to the flame where exotic ingredients are concerned, my attention is grabbed when I learn that the star ingredient of my main course, marrow, will be substituted with a comparably dense and meaty Asian fruit called duku. I await the swap with gusto, and it doesn’t disappoint. The round duku steaks have a sweetness which complements the sharpness of the cheddar and pickled beetroot topping. The kale and parsnip crisps bring a pleasing crunch to an otherwise soft and comforting dish, but the pea and wasabi purée steals the show; spicy enough to bring the dish alive, creamy enough not to dominate. A dark chocolate and raspberry brownie lures me into its devilish clutches, but my appetite is spent and I don’t do the rich dessert justice. With so much left to explore on the menu, I’ll return soon - and I urge you to as well. Camera phones at the ready, dear diners, because pub food never looked so pretty. Nathalie’s Monthly Health TIP

BREAK-YOUR-FAST! The main function of breakfast is exactly that: to ‘break-the-fast’.

29

As you haven’t had a drink or food since the previous night, your blood sugar is very low by morning and will continue to plummet until you eat. Dehydration has also set in by morning, often triggering headaches and fatigue. Skipping breakfast will often contribute to low energy, weight gain as you snack on sugary (or starchy) foods and a reduced ability to focus. By the time you finally eat, it’s already too late: you will struggle all day to rebalance your blood sugar, prompting you to graze on ‘the wrong foods’, and the headaches and fatigue have set in.

A lot of people, however, find it difficult to eat breakfast, so slowly sipping (and chewing) a freshly made smoothie may ease you into this essential habit. Make sure to include ingredients rich in protein, fibre, good fats, minerals and vitamins to help keep your blood sugar and energy levels up until lunchtime. Ready Set Go Smoothie: Ingredients: 1 handful raw cashews/almonds (soaked overnight and rinsed in morning) 2 handfuls frozen or fresh berries 1 small slice of fresh ginger (to taste) ½ avocado 1 tbsp cacao powder (no sugar or sweeteners) 1 dose of pure hemp or pea protein (as per dosage on packet) Water/unsweetened almond/hemp milk Blend until smooth and enjoy! Wish ward councillor Robert Nemeth responds to last month’s article on Hove Library...

THE DEBATE CONTINUES - HOVE LIBRARY As I write, the future of Hove Library is uncertain. It will be uncertain when the magazine goes to print and when it hits doorsteps. And it will be uncertain for at least the next year or so. Why the Labour Administration is so keen to close and sell Hove Library is uncertain too. The building is a purpose-built facility and was of course a gift from the Scottish-born American steel baron, Andrew Carnegie. It is in an ideal location and is always busy. The crux of the matter is ultimately that Brighton Library was so expensive to build and is so costly to run that Hove Library now has to suffer. Improvements that 31 it would have been made if the intention was to keep have been put off. A café should have been installed, for example, and the Libraries Extra service introduced. The plan is now to close Hove Library and get rid of the ground floor elements of Hove Museum (which amounts to half of the museum). A new library-type facility will then be created on the ground floor and over its garden. The council claimed that 15% of the library floor area would be lost. The true figure of dedicated library space that is to go is a staggering 59% – a huge difference. I have two big problems with this whole fiasco. The first

is that I see this proposal as unnecessary and illogical. The reduction in floor area is unacceptable. The move away from the town centre is against the spirit of what a public library is all about. The business case is highly dubious. The sale is disrespectful to the donor. Costs will inevitably overrun. The second is the principle of Hove getting a raw deal once again from the city council. Whether it be the total lack of investment in our public realm, the removal of our public hall, or the languishment of our tourist boards, it seems to be okay that Hove loses out. The council claims to have information showing support for the closure. I delved a little deeper and discovered that the quoted figure of 57% means nothing. It refers to the response to a question that was put to all library users in the city, many of whom knew that their own library might close if Hove’s didn’t – most importantly, the question conveniently forgot to mention the actual closure! The West Hove ArtsTrail is always a lovely way to spend a weekend in May...

WEST HOVE

A PEEK INTO AN ARTIST’S OPEN HOUSE It is less than two weeks until the launch of the Artists’ Open Houses - the much celebrated festival that provides art lovers the opportunity to browse and buy original artwork from the houses and workshops of artists across a range of disciplines. The West Hove Trail, although a relative newcomer to the festival, has some of the most prestigious artists’ houses, boasting a range of accolades between them. Among the most successful is Encounters at 12 Langdale Road. With a vision to make art more accessible, Encounters celebrates the “democratisation of artistic expression”. We caught up with Miladys Parejo, the director of Encounters and an installation artist in her own right, to discover what makes the Artists’ Open Houses so special. What made you decide to enter the Artists’ Open Houses?

35

The Artists’ Open Houses offers a wonderful opportunity for people to meet informally. Recently Encounters has had more than 2,000 visitors each year - we meet neighbours and provide a place where people can get together. Also, opening an Artist’s Open House provides a Miladys Parejo connection with Brighton’s vibrant artistic culture. Festival each year. Our dream was to facilitate We began with a vision of sharing an artistic dream with encounters, forging meaningful connections between the many thousands of people who visit the Brighton people who would otherwise not meet. We have been very successful in that mission, winning the Best Open House award and the Visitor’s Choice Award and coming runners up last year.

What makes the West Hove Trail unique? West Hove is a new trail and one that has been particularly successful in a few short years. As newcomers we have been able to take a different view and been pioneers. Why is the Artists’ Open Houses so special? On the whole, art is shown in rather sterile settings. The Artists’ Open Houses are informal and provide opportunities for many hundreds of artists to connect directly with members of the public. Where do you source your art? We have local and international artists. In 2014 we displayed exciting work from Costa Rica, France, Germany, Israel, Japan and Venezuela. Last year we displayed work from Colombia, Korea and Spain, and in 2016 we have a great show with new artists. What type of art do you exhibit? We are eclectic. Encounters aims to be a destination that gives pleasure to everyone - offering something for all. For more information on Artists’ Open Houses, visit www.aoh.org.uk

Here is our monthly gardening feature written by Nareesa Sulaiman, a local garden designer...

WEST HOVE

IN THE GARDEN... MAY 2016 Plants in containers are a great way to add interest or colour to a patio, a wall, balcony, a windowsill or steps to the front door. Growing plants in containers is also a great way to exercise your inner creative self… Start by deciding how big the container can be for the space where you want to locate it. There are lots of different types of containers: wooden, metal, stone, plastic, ceramic - both glazed and unglazed, as well as every combination in between. Often your budget determines what you choose, although I have seen many fantastic planters made from recycled containers. Decide if you would like a planting scheme for your pot, eg summer colour, hot or cool colours, shades of41 green, or architectural. Plan your plant combination carefully, thinking about plant forms, leaf shapes and textures, as well as flowering period and flower colour. Remember that if you go to a garden centre and buy what is in flower now, you may have nothing in flower for the next 10 months of the year so planning is important! Once you have selected and bought your plants, it’s time for planting. Soak the plants well in a bucket of water. Check that your chosen container has drainage holes in it; if the container doesn’t drain, your plants may

become waterlogged and most will eventually die. Add some broken crocks or flat stones to help prevent the holes from becoming blocked. Partly fill the container with compost. I recommend either container compost, which has a water-retention component as well as controlled-release fertiliser, or a good quality compost, suitable to the types of plants that you have chosen, mixed with slow release fertiliser. Position plants so that they are no deeper in the new container than they were in their original pot; this may require you to put larger plants in first and then add compost until the soil level is suitable for the smaller plants. Level off the compost and then water well. Add a decorative mulch layer such as gravel or pebbles, if desired. This will also help with water retention. Feature plant Syringa meyeri ‘Palibin’ An unusual compact lilac, maximum height 1.5m, with an abundance of fragrant flowers in May and June. This looks great in a container underplanted with Geranium wallichianum. Great places to visit Highdown Gardens, Goring, BN12 6FB. Admission by donation. An award-winning garden in a chalkpit with some beautiful early summer plant combinations. Happy gardening! Nareesa

Do you know your neighbours...?

KNOW MY NEIGHBOUR WEEK 21st -27th MAY 2016 Our lives are often so busy many of us don’t know the people living closest to us. Know My Neighbour Week is being launched across the city because getting to know our neighbours is a highly effective way of tackling social isolation. This May, a week of initiatives and activities will help you get to know your neighbours. For seven days between 21 and 27 May, a pop-up café at One Church in Gloucester Place will become a hub of neighbourliness, with music, entertainment, information and support. Come along to find out how to get involved. Just a few reasons to take time out to know your neighbours… • Fewer than a quarter of people in the UK feel 43 a sense of belonging in the community. • One in 10 has no interaction with neighbours. • The effect of loneliness on mortality exceeds the impact of risk factors such as obesity, and has a similar influence to cigarette smoking. To find out more, go to knowmyneighbour.org or check out our Facebook (Know My Neighbour) or Twitter (@knowmyneighbour ) pages. Alternatively, you can email Kate at: hello@knowmyneighbour.org or call 01273 694746.
