Welcome to OUr november edition of the west hove directory... Hello and welcome to the November edition of The West Hove Directory! With the weather we had in October combined with the clocks going back recently, it suddenly feels like we have been plunged headlong into the winter months. But the good news is that The West Hove Directory has arrived on your doormat and it’s time to put that kettle on, put your feet up for 15 minutes and have a flick through the latest edition. We hope you find something of interest this month. We have the usual mix of local articles with the addition of a few extra bits and bobs of local interest – the most notable being the West Hove Forum article on page 5. Enjoy November and take care on Bonfire Night! The West Hove Directory team 01273 551021 info@westhovedirectory.co.uk

We love to feature local community groups in the Directory. Please let us know what you are involved with..

New members wanted for the West Hove Forum What is the West Hove Forum? The West Hove Forum was set up in 2005 and was formerly known as the Portland Road and Clarendon Forum. At the West Hove Forum, community representatives can come together to identify issues affecting West Hove and work together to tackle them. Meetings are held every two months, in West Hove venues. The forum covers part of Goldsmid ward and all of Wish and Westbourne wards. It can influence decisions and priorities, and it oversees funded projects. This year the WHF has received £4,000 from the Healthy Neighbourhood Fund for community health and wellbeing projects and activities. Groups can apply for up to £500 of this funding and a panel decides how to spend the money. The forum can also discuss what to do with Section 106 developer contributions from new developments in the area. At every meeting there is a neighbourhood policing report by local PCSOs and local policing priorities are set. Policing issues discussed at the last meeting, in September, included street drinkers in Boundary Road and car dealing in Portland Road. Current community policing priorities are: 1. Bike security awareness 2. Crime prevention – scams 3. Burglary 4. Parking outside schools. There is usually a Round Robin, so that every attendee has an opportunity to raise areas of concern or to inform other members about what their group has been doing. Some other issues raised at recent meetings are cannabis use in Stoneham Park and parking problems.

Wish Park Residents’ Association and the Kingsway And West Hove Residents’ Association. It is also attended by service providers such as members of the local community policing team, park rangers and the council’s Safe in the City team. Other members include community volunteers, groups such as the Friends of Stoneham Park, representatives of religious communities, local businesses such as Bungard & Sons, and ward councillors. Local councillor Garry Peltzer Dunn says that he values the meetings and goes there to listen. The Trust for Developing Communities provides assistance to the committee.

Who can attend? The WHF is attended by representatives of residents’ associations such as the Ingram Crescent Residents’ Association, the Bolsover Road Residents’ Association, the

We would love new members to come along - particularly representatives of local businesses, professionals and residents’ associations. We are always looking for new volunteers for the committee. So, if you are interested in helping to organise local events or meetings, or helping with our publicity through newsletter articles or social media, please get in touch. In return, you can learn new skills like IT or social media, or learn about how a local committee works and how the council services work. GARDENING Brought to you each month by Fiveways gardening expert Lisa Attwell...

Welcome to the February edition of Fiveways Gardens

n

With the increasing interest in growing our own food, and maybe not so much money to go round, why not give it a go this year? But what if you have no spare ground to plant into? Well, how about some carefully chosen nice big containers in your front garden. Or, even better, get rid of some of that tired looking concrete or paving slabs and plant straight into the ground. I’m often asked what’s easy and suitable for growing in limited space. Top of my list are onion, beetroot, carrot and a lovely waxy salad potato, such as Charlottes. Nip out to your local garden centre or chat up friends that have an allotment, who’ll be able to get you a dozen or so seed potatoes from the allotment shop. Growing potatoes is simplicity itself.

them. In about late June/July, you’ll find a lovely crop of salad potatoes that you can just dig up as and when you want them. Easy, huh? If the whole crop’s dug up by the end of July, why not use the space to grow a range of gorgeous late summer flowers – Rudbeckias, verbenas, asters, grasses etc, that will keep you smiling through the rest of summer and well into autumn.

1. buy seed potatoes ASAP. 2. put them in a dark cold place (the loft works well for me) for a few weeks to “chit” or sprout. 3. push these potatoes into the ground where you want them to grow and cover with about 3-4 inches or 10cm of your garden soil. 4. relax and go and do some other things for a month or two. 5. when there’s lots of green leafy growth to about 8-12 inches, put another few inches of garden soil (or the bought stuff) onto the growing potato plants. You don’t want to completely cover them up, but this “earthing up” process means you won’t get green bits on your spuds and you’ll get a bigger crop. Do this several times over the early summer months. Keep the plants well watered once there’s plenty of foliage. You don’t need to feed

I was at a meeting recently with the council Parks department in Preston Park and I’m chuffed to report that there’s a strong commitment to planting some banks of wild flowers in the park and some native shrubs and trees. Both of these measures are great news for us and local wildlife.

LOCAL business... Here we feature another excellent local business...

Shelby’s Hair and Beauty Here at Shelby’s Hair and Beauty, we pride ourselves on listening to what the client says and doing what they want. Many of our existing clients say that they love the relaxed, chilled-out atmosphere in Shelby’s and feel quite at home when they visit us. My name is Michelle Lloyd. I have owned Shelby’s for nearly six years now and I’ve got to say I absolutely love it. The street is such a nice place to work in and everyone is friendly and very welcoming. Since opening Shelby’s, I’ve had a family. I now have two beautiful little girls and it has been a tad hectic at times. I’m lucky I have such a good team at Shelby’s who have been there to support me. Dan, our senior stylist, has been working with us now for just over three years and the clients love him - his hair styling and general flamboyance are second to none. We also have Vikki Leigh, who works on a Friday and covers for Dan and me when we have holidays. She is a great hairstylist and between us all we have over 50 years’ experience in the trade. Then we have Sharon, our newest member of the Shelby’s team. Sharon is our resident beauty therapist and the proud owner of 10Beauty. She has been with

us since February and is building up a terrific clientele. She offers a wide range of treatments, from waxing to Shrinking Violet body wraps, all at affordable prices. At Shelby’s we pride ourselves on the fact that we try very hard to cater for all our clients’ needs and that includes being reasonably priced. We are always running some promotion or other, as well as having a loyalty scheme in place. Now I’m back from maternity leave, I have a lot of ideas to make Shelby’s even better, one of which is a complete overhaul of our colour range, which is very exciting. We have been using the same colour products for over five years and I felt when I came back it was time for a change. To launch the new colour range, which is most extensive and more than meets our clients’ needs, we’re going to put on an open day on Sunday 30th November. We are also celebrating six years of trading - the anniversary is 2nd December - so we would like to see as many of you as possible. There will be great promotions running all day and goodie bags with some lovely samples for you all to try, a raffle for a collection of haircare products, a cut & finish and a beauty treatment voucher, and more importantly wine & nibbles, ha ha!

SPECIAL OFFER 25% off for new clients on first visit Existing clients ask for details on offers

Hope to see you at the open day. If you can’t make it, we are there Tuesdays to Saturdays. Pop in and see what we are all about. Open late Tuesdays and Thursdays

LOCAL group... KINGSWAY AND WEST HOVE RESIDENTS’ ASSOCIATION

THE NEGLECTED END OF KINGSWAY The western end of Kingsway has become a dumping ground for illegally lived-in camper vans, empty caravans unconnected to vehicles, business vans and cars for sale.

Shortage of parking spaces on local roads is already a major issue in the area. Potential new developments with insufficient on-site parking will aggravate this, as will any expansion of parking controls nearby. KAWHRA residents voted against formal ‘pay and display’ parking. Some may have preferred ‘light touch’ controls, but unfortunately the council would not consider this - despite it applying from the nearby Wish Park area - so we have no parking control, and enforcement of regulations by the police and local authority is spasmodic at best. On Kingsway there is an additional need for short time parking to visit the local cafés and newsagents. Light touch parking, as in Boundary Road, would allow for this but would prevent the road being used as a dumping ground as now. It seems that any box, with wheels attached, can park for weeks or indefinitely. Trade and hire vehicles from Aldrington Basin, and even from the King Alfred, are left at night, over weekends or longer. KAWHRA has contacted the police and discussed

the problem with our councillors, Anne Pissaridou and Garry Peltzer Dunn. Anne notified KAWHRA of a swoop in September by members of the council‘s Traveller Liaison Team, Highways Team, Trading Standards, NCL Parking Enforcement team and a police PCSO from Hove. This joint action covered Kingsway from Hove Lagoon to Boundary Road. Eleven notices were served on vehicles that were lived in or believed to be lived in. Four of these vehicles remained, so summonses were issued in the Magistrates Court for orders for them to move on. The Highways team served additional notices on abandoned vehicles. They promise to repeat this exercise from time to time when funds allow. However the problem persists. Should there be specific vehicles that you are concerned about and appear to be lived in, illegally parked or abandoned, please contact KAWHRA and we will pass this on to our councillors, police and the council’s team. No doubt some see this part of Kingsway as part of the industrial/harbour area. However this is a residential area which is physically separated from the harbour and should be treated as such. People criticise Kingsway at its western (KAWHRA) end for being tired, run down and in need of drastic improvement. KAWHRA has pointed out that there is no problem with the north residential side. The south side fence is poorly maintained and gives the area a scruffy appearance. Damaged by storms several months ago, there is still a dangerous unrepaired gap, despite our representations to the owner. The bus stop close to the Blue Lagoon Bar is overgrown with tamarisk bushes, attracting rubbish, and the fence repaired with a forklift pallet. No wonder we feel neglected at this end of Kingsway! Regular article about local exercise opportunities by West Hove resident Isobel Muir...

spinning classes - ‘MyRIDE’ Although I love my gym and it contains everything I would ever want or need, I decided to have a go at MyRide, the most modern spin class I have ever done. Basically you cycle in front of a big screen with three choices of class: a class with a real life instructor (MyRide Live), one with virtual instructors on the screen (MyRide Virtual) or one where you cycle on a virtual road or other terrain (MyRide Sportif). I plumped for a virtual session where three different instructors took turns on the screen guiding the participants through a variety of different sections. All the usual things were covered: hill climbs, sprints, jumps, sitting climbs, standing climbs, sitting and standing sprints. The good thing is that the suggested RPM (revolutions per minute – how fast your legs are pedalling) are displayed on the screen and there is a monitor on the bike so you can check that you are within the correct zone. A problem I always had with the spin class I used to do was that I seemed to be incapable of pedalling fast enough to keep up with everyone else but here it was possible to adjust my resistance to make

sure I could stick in the recommended RPM. More often than not I had to turn my resistance down (you will know by now I have a tendency to push myself too hard when left to my own devices) to be able to pedal fast enough. The short sections with a countdown, so you knew how long you had left to put in the effort, were excellent and really helped me keep going when I was flagging. Naturally I chose the hour-long session and it was hard, but with all the mod cons, screens, darkness, everchanging (subtle) neon lighting and three different instructors, it never got boring and I didn’t feel like I was repeating myself. I did this class twice and it was different each time, so if you can only make a certain class each week you won’t be doing the same thing. I would have liked to do a Sportif where you follow a route on the road, but alas I couldn’t make any of the times for that. Overall though, I thought these classes were very good and would help newcomers get to grips with the idea of different types of cycling for different muscles and outcomes, strength, cardio and endurance. I did my MyRide at Withdean Sports Complex. Anyone can attend and the class timetable is easy to find on the Withdean website. If you are lucky you can have a free class as a trial, which is what I did!

For more details about my life in exercise please visit my blog “IMFitHove”. Thanks. Happy exercising! isobelmuir@hotmail.com

Local COMMUNITY A Community Fall Prevention Class for People with Age-Related Balance Problems

Keeping Your Balance - Keeping Active How does good balance help keep us active? As we get older we can experience loss of balance control and this loss can lead to a general lack of confidence or even falls. Our sense of balance and good balance reactions can be re-trained through specific exercises. With regained confidence we will go out more and this will, in turn, keep us fitter and more active. How will the class help with your balance system? I assess you before we start the classes to see what your needs are. In the classes, I give exercises tailored to improving your balance system, in sitting, standing or walking, depending on your fitness and ability. The course is based on The Otago Exercise Programme, a strength and balance retraining programme designed to prevent falls in older people. This exercise programme has been shown to reduce falling and the likelihood of injury when older people fall. Who will run the classes? Martina Bisping is a qualified physiotherapist. She practises in her clinic at the Shadi Danin Medi Spa in New Church Road and has been keeping older and younger adults active and balanced for 20 years. She uses training balance reactions as part of her treatment for sports injuries and post-surgery rehabilitation. She is running these classes as she has noticed how many of her elderly patients with other conditions have benefited from specific balance exercises. From Thursday, 13 November, at The Hive Community Room above Stoneham Park Café Call for information and to book: Martina Bisping Physiotherapy Shadi Danin Medi Spa, 70 New Church Road 01273 958478 www.martina-bisping-physio.co.uk

LOCAL gardening... Here is our monthly gardening feature written by Nareesa Sulaiman, a local garden designer...

In the garden...NOVEMber 2014 On bright, cold autumn days, I love to potter for a couple of hours in the garden. Once the garden has been tidied, it’s a good time to take a step back and look at where the garden can be improved. November is still a good month for planting so have a careful look at the beds and think about which plants have worked well, which plants need to be moved and which areas could have plants added. Many of the nurseries have a good stock of shrubs and trees at this time of year as well as spring-flowering bulbs. We looked at bulb ordering and planting in the September issue (view online at www.sussexmagazines. net) so here are a few guidelines to planting shrubs. Prepare the area to be planted by forking the earth over and breaking up clods of soil; this helps to add air and improve drainage. Measure the side of the pot against a spade or hand trowel then dig out a square hole to the same depth as the pot, no deeper, but three times as wide. Save the excavated earth to one side. Remove the plant from its container and tease out the roots. Shrubs sold as bare-root plants will be wrapped in protective layers which will also need to be removed. Place the plant in the centre of the prepared hole,

ensuring that the soil level of the plant is at the same height as that of the soil surrounding the hole. Adjust the angle and orientation of the plant until you are happy, then use the excavated soil to fill around the plant, firming in with the heel of the foot/hand. Do not add extra organic matter or fertiliser, as it is currently believed that this discourages the roots from pushing out into the surrounding soil. Water well and continue to water once a week if there has been little or no rain. Feature plant for November Nerine bowdenii Here on the south coast, this Cornish lily is hardy when planted in a warm, south-facing bed. Do you have plans for Christmas Day?... Hove Methodist Church will be hosting a lunch for all those who would otherwise be on their own on Christmas Day, so if you will be on your own contact us on the number below.

everyone else. This is a great day for the whole church family and those who have helped before have said how much they have enjoyed it. We will be very glad to have you alongside and believe you will enjoy it too. With many thanks, Terry Pomfrey (Hove Methodist Church) One of our advertisers has received a prestigious National award. please have a read...

Arka - Funeral Director of the Year 2014 Brighton & Hove’s local independent and green funeral directors, ARKA Original Funerals, has just scooped the main award at the National Good Funeral Awards 2014. Sarah Clarke, one of the funeral directors at ARKA, won the prestigious “Funeral Director of the Year” award. We have, for about 40 years, invited anyone, who might otherwise be on their own, to share in a free Christmas Day celebration, including lunch and entertainment, and we also aim to provide transport for most of the guests. This is the biggest event of our calendar in terms of outreach to the community. Last year around 100 people were fed, including guests and helpers. The lunch involves a lot of work, mainly on the day but also beforehand, and on Christmas Eve. We are fortunate to receive a good number of volunteers from outside of our church. Please do, therefore, give prayerful thought to lending a hand, whether for setting tables, welcoming, waiting at table, serving, taking coats, entertaining, washing-up or clearing the hall afterwards, or transporting some of our guests either to or from the church. We would really like to hear from you. Please contact the church office (01273 324600) about any help you may be able to offer. Even an hour from each person could make a big difference, if enough join in, and would make it easier for

Up against a longlist of ten others nationally, Sarah was delighted to have been awarded. “I’m absolutely thrilled to have won this award. The Good Funeral Guide is a beacon of good practice and inspiration in the funeral world and I’m honoured to have been recognised in this way. I’d like to thank all the people that voted for me.” ARKA Original Funerals, led by Cara Mair, has been pioneering in this industry for 12 years now and has changed radically the way that families can be supported when someone dies. Cara says: “We support a lot of really wonderful people and I’m so grateful that people have taken time out to vote for Sarah and ARKA in recognition of the work that we do. We are very focused on choice and empowerment at ARKA. The funerals that we organise are very much about the person, their life and what made them the person that they were. “Funerals play an important role in the process of saying goodbye to someone. How someone died and how you said goodbye will stay with the person left behind for life so it’s incredibly important to get that right. We encourage people to take time in making decisions so that they are involved and feel connected to the whole process.” Contact ARKA Original Funerals on 01273 621444 or via info@arkafunerals.co.uk

Flu occurs every year. It’s a highly infectious disease that can lead to serious illness. Older people and those with long term health conditions are among the most at risk from flu. The best way to avoid catching and spreading flu is by having a vaccination before the flu season starts.

Ask your GP about the free flu jab.
