We are really interested in any feedback you might have on what items you would like to see featured in the publication on a regular basis and any further improvements you think we could make. Featuring another local West Hove person…

LOCAL PERSON JOHN KENNETT FIREWORK DISPLAY ORGANISER John Kennett lives with his family in Portland Avenue and is co-producer of the Family Firework Spectacular at Nevill Sports Ground on 7th November. How long have you lived in West Hove? For about 15 years, originally in Poets Corner and then we moved to our current house around 10 years ago. How did you get into pyrotechnics? I’ve always loved fireworks, and was particularly fascinated by how different effects can be combined to create a compelling performance. I started by working 5 for as many different companies as possible, and learned a wide range of techniques and different approaches. It became clear to me early on that computerised electronic control was the way forward as it gives a level of precision that simply isn’t possible with more traditional methods. What is the most challenging display you’ve ever worked on? I’ve designed and fired displays from all sorts of interesting places including boats, rooftops, sports

stadiums, and even the moat of a castle. I’ve put fireworks on bicycles, and blown up sheds, caravans and a double decker bus on live TV. They have all had their challenges, particularly working out how to do it all safely. The Family Firework Spectacular is a different sort of challenge for me because I’m responsible for the overall running of the whole event, whilst Mike Sansom and his award-winning team from Brightfire Pyrotechnics deal with the creative side of things. It does mean that I get to stand with my family to watch the show though, which I love. Tell us more about the Family Firework Spectacular... When my children were small I was frustrated that there didn’t seem to be any suitable firework displays to take them to. I wanted a big, well designed display that would hold their attention, not too late in the evening, and without too much hanging around. I was working with Mike at the time on some other shows, and he came up with the idea of us putting on a display at the Nevill Sports Ground. That was nine years ago and it’s got bigger and better every year. What happens if the weather is bad on the day? We’ve had our fair share of weather, but can cope with all but the most extreme conditions. Rain certainly doesn’t put us off, and our site has enough space to cope with pretty high winds too. Do wrap up warm though, and wellies are definitely recommended. There will be a good range of hot food and drinks available to keep you warm on the inside too. How can we get tickets? Tickets are available online from www.familyfireworks. co.uk and from a selection of shops across the city, see the website for details. There will also be tickets available on the night. This month saw the launch of a world first in pet food – by local resident Neil McAdam of Berriedale Avenue, Hove.

WEST HOVE

NEW LOCAL BUSINESS - McADAMS PET FOODS McAdams Pet Foods have launched the world’s first dry dog food made using whole British free range chicken – no meat meal and no grain – in Pets Corner stores across the county and soon to roll out nationwide.

7

So what is so different about McAdams over other dry dog food available? We spoke to Neil who told us: “Those of you who walk your dogs in Wish Park may know me and my Labrador, George. He has epilepsy and a terminal heart condition. Vets told me he would do well to make 7 or 8. I wasn’t accepting that and decided to make sure I was feeding him the best food I could to give him the best life possible. “Then one day when we were out walking on the Sussex Downs we came across a really beautiful free range chicken farm and an idea came to me. If free range and whole free range chickens is better for people than farm fed and battery – then why not use free range and all the bird and make the world’s best dog food. The idea was born.

first dry pet food in the world made using whole British free range chicken, with no processed meat meal, no stripped carcass, grain free and totally natural. “George turns 13 shortly and loves nothing better than chasing his ball around Wish Park as he has done since I first got him at 8 weeks old.” McAdams Dry Chicken is available at all Pets Corner stores across the area; the nearest one is the West Hove Branch, 364 Kingsway, Hove. You can buy McAdams online at petscorner.co.uk or alternatively, catch up with Neil and George in Wish Park! You can find out more about McAdams Pet Foods online at mcadamspetfoods.com or email Neil & George at neil@mcadamspetfoods.com

“Over the next two years, firstly in my kitchen at home and then with help of pet nutritionists, I started experimenting with blends and recipes. I researched ingredients and decided that I wanted to make my food without any processed meat meal, a powder used in nearly all commercial pet foods. Meat meal is made by boiling up animal parts, separating the fats and proteins, drying and creating a powder which isn’t fit for human consumption but is cheap and used in most dry pet foods. It is sometimes referred to as dried chicken, or chicken meal, on ingredient lists. “The result of over 40 different recipe trials, tests with George and more latterly over 400 other feeding trials is the product we have today. We are really proud of what we have achieved – a world first for Hove. Ok, we may not have invented the wheel but McAdams is the WHD November 2015

Local West Hove news...

700 BUS UPDATES ITS SOFTWARE... The 700 bus travels east along the Kingsway in West Hove to central Brighton. In the other direction it goes to Worthing, Littlehampton, Arundel, Bognor Regis, Chichester, Havant and Portsmouth.

11

If you’re a wrinkly with a free bus pass and time on your hands, why not spend a pleasant day travelling the scenic coast route? The timetable has always been a bit of a lottery, with the long route and traffic delays. One bus may follow another, then a long time gap before the next. The electronic timetable displays were supposed to help but it was frustrating to see “3 minutes” to the next bus, then “2”, “1”, “due”, only to be replaced by “12 minutes”. It was great to find a new updated display was installed two months ago, hopefully more accurate. Once the display became active at the bus stop between St Keyna and Derek Avenue, the buses appear to be driving backwards to Arundel rather than Brighton - or perhaps the software is French where they drive on the right! SECRET GARDEN WINS CITY IN BLOOM AWARD The Brighton & Hove City in Bloom award is well known and supported by many local businesses and the council. Its aims are to encourage people to brighten up the streets and their own homes with wonderful garden displays that not only bring them cheer - but cheer those who see them. Another benefit is to the bees and wildlife, therefore they discourage the use of pesticides. The Secret Garden entered in the category of Best Community Garden this year. I and our lovely beekeeper Chris Hogarth were excited to be invited to the award ceremony at the Thistle Hotel (now called The Waterfront) and hoped to be placed somewhere! After cheering all the other winners we were delighted to find we had won joint first prize along with Stanford Community Garden and were presented with our award by the 13 the Mayor of Brighton & Hove, Lynda Hyde, along with award sponsors, Brighton & Hove Food Partnership. As well as the much appreciated £50 cheque, the Secret Garden will get a lot more publicity which we hope will encourage many more volunteers. In order to win more accolades such as this one, we are not sitting on our laurels and have lots of plans to continue to improve the garden. Our wonderful honey bees will get a natural enclosure of willow to protect them from rowdy visitors and encourage a better ‘bee line’ from their hives so that we don’t get in the way of

each other while we work. The pond will have a patio near the gate to allow visitors in wheelchairs to view it. All our pathways will continue to be improved and we will try out many different plants and vegetables to get as much variety as possible. The Secret Garden Group is pleased to announce that the Rockinghorse charity is funding our collaboration with the Royal Sussex County Hospital and we will be running courses from April next year to help children with diabetes have a wider understanding of growing plants. We are also working alongside Brighton and Hove Food Partnership to try to help people with early signs of dementia get involved with gardening and its many, well documented, healing benefits. The Secret Garden Group would like to thank our funders for helping us to continue to progress and create a garden for all. They include: all those neighbours who have donated plants from their own gardens, or a greenhouse and the small sheds; the local garden centre Mayberry’s; West Hove Forum Healthy Neighbourhood Fund and the Sussex Community Foundation. If you would like more information or to volunteer Wednesdays and/or Saturdays please contact: Joi Jones, volunteer coordinator: secretgarden730@gmail.com

Here is our monthly gardening feature written by Nareesa Sulaiman, a local garden designer...

WEST HOVE

IN THE GARDEN... NOVEMBER 2015 When designing gardens, I have to consider ways to make the garden look interesting during the winter months. Perennials may steal the show during the summer and autumn months but shrubs can come into their own during the winter months. Here are a few shrubs that will offer interesting foliage or flowers during the cold months ahead... Daphne odora - This clump-forming evergreen shrub has strongly perfumed pink flowers from January to March. It makes a lovely plant to have close to a path where the scent can be enjoyed as you pass. This is not a plant to take cuttings for flower arrangements as die-back can sometimes occur. Still, a relatively low-maintenance plant that earns its keep. Maximum height and spread, 19 1.5m x 1.5m. Garrya elliptica - Long silver-green catkins hang in clusters from this large shrub from December to February, earning it the name Silk Tassel bush. A great shrub for the back of a sunny border but it will cope with some shade. Maximum height and spread, 4m x 4m. Hamamelis x intermedia ‘Jelena’ - This witch hazel offers year round interest. The fiery-orange flowers spring from the bare branches in January and February making it a stunning focal point in the winter months. The new

Cyclamen hederifolium

leaves are a bright green which then show shades of autumn colour before they fall. Requires acid to neutral soil so this shrub is best in a pot rather than the chalky, alkaline soil which we tend to have here on the south coast. Maximum height and spread, 4m x 4m. Lonicera fragrantissima - The clue is in the name - the flowers of this winter-flowering honeysuckle have a wonderful scent and are borne on bare or semi-bare branches which look good in flower arrangements. The shrub will have more flowers if planted in a sunny position. Maximum height and spread, 2m x 3m. Sarcococca hookeriana var. humilis - A medium-sized evergreen shrub with highly scented flowers from December to March. This shrub copes well with shade and is fantastic planted next to a door or window where the scent is really appreciated. Cut flowering stems make good indoor arrangements. Maximum height and spread, 1m x 1m. Feature plant for November Cyclamen hederifolium As other plants die back, I love discovering the heartshaped leaves and pale pink flowers of autumn cyclamen. They look great planted in groups and can cope with sun or light shade. Happy gardening! Nareesa

Parking is an emotive topic across the city. Here is some local parking news...

WEST HOVE

NEW PARKING CONSULTATION FOR THE WEST OF WISH WARD On 13th October, the council’s Environment, Transport and Sustainability Committee agreed a priority timetable for a list of areas in the city to be consulted on residents’ parking schemes, tailored to meet specific demands in each area. A parking scheme re-consultation will begin in West Hove, in the west of Wish ward, from late 2016. The agreed area and type of scheme will be approved at a further ETS committee. Peter Reeves, Chair of the Kingsway and West Hove Residents’ Association (KAWHRA), presented a deputation paper requesting that residents of the area between Saxon Road and Boundary Road should be consulted on 21 an extension of the adjoining light-touch parking scheme (in the Wish Park area). He said that the extension of the light-touch parking scheme earlier this year into that area had severely aggravated an already difficult parking situation for residents to the west, as a result of parking displacement. Residents fear that the problems are likely to worsen in the near future because of expected local developments. A petition signed by 100 people was also presented by Tess Booth of Mornington Crescent. The petition

Cllr Robert Nemeth, Tess Booth, Cllr Garry Peltzer Dunn and Peter Reeves

requested the implementation of light touch parking restrictions in Mornington Crescent, Rothbury Road and Jesmond Road – three linked streets to the north of New Church Road. Wish ward councillors Garry Peltzer Dunn and Robert Nemeth have conducted their own survey of residents in 26 roads between Boundary Road and Saxon Road. They received around 1,000 replies, with a high percentage of responses in favour of some sort of parking scheme – in Roman Road, 95% of replies were in favour. They surveyed individuals, rather than households, as the council does. There were a few anomalies, with three roads against any change – Chelston Avenue (a cul-de-sac), Middleton Avenue (isolated from casual through-traffic) and Seaford Road (a short one-way street not approachable from the main road). All three of these roads are somewhat different from the norm. 75% of residents who wanted a parking scheme would prefer light touch to a full parking scheme, so this is what the councillors will campaign for. Many vehicles are left in the area by people commuting into Brighton by bus. Cllr Peltzer Dunn said, “The West Wish park and ride scheme is getting worse all the time.” Committee chair councillor Gill Mitchell said: “As always, we are responding to residents’ requests for action. With such pressure on road space, residents are asking us for schemes to deter commuter or visitor parking. We will always consult and only introduce schemes where most residents want them.” WHD November 2015

Here we bring you news regarding Hove library...

CAMPAIGN TO SAVE HOVE LIBRARY Hove Library could be integrated into a new cultural centre in Hove Museum’s building as part of plans to modernise the service, 12 years after a previous campaign to keep the library open. The option is being explored as the council faces rising costs and its biggest ever reductions in funding from central government. It would entail selling the current library building. The city-wide library service alone needs to save £1.34 million in the next four years. If agreed, the proposal would entail integrating the library service into a new cultural centre with Hove Museum in New Church Road. Any change would be subject to extensive public consultation between mid-November and next February. 27

The council faces a bill of £2.5 million to keep the library open for the next five years. As a Grade 2 listed building, the premises are hard to upgrade cost-effectively. Various parts of the building cannot affordably be made accessible to disabled staff or users. Officers have advised councillors that the most successful and cost-effective libraries these days tend to be located alongside other council and community facilities in multi-purpose buildings. Council leader Warren Morgan said: “Relocating Hove

Library offers the biggest single potential saving with the least amount of damage to the overall service. We could vacate the building and still provide a good service for Hove in a new way. In times of such huge financial stringency from central government it makes sense to concentrate on the services we offer, rather than the buildings from which they are delivered. In fact, that building makes a modern service more difficult.” Nothing has yet been decided. Any change would need to go before the Economic Development and Culture Committee in coming months. A final decision would not take place until March 2016 and any implementation would not take place before 2017. External advisors say the library building could fetch around £1 million at auction. However officers say the biggest financial benefits are in reduced running costs rather than any sale.

A campaign has already begun to save Hove Library - Green councillor Phelim MacCafferty has started a petition at https://you.38degrees.org.uk/petitions/savehove-library and former Green councillor Christopher Hawtree has started a Save Hove Library Facebook page. He said: “We have been here before, and had a very successful campaign which saved the library. I am hearing equally enthusiastic comments this time around, and am heartened by this. The posters are spreading. Onwards!”

CONFUSED OVER WHAT’S ‘GOOD’ OR ‘BAD’ FOR YOU? Countless numbers of clients tell me they no longer know what they should or shouldn’t eat, as every report in the media contradicts the previous day’s statement. My reply is to always find out who sponsored the latest piece of research or who’s on the board of the university or body that’s just published the findings. You’re likely to find one or more of the world’s prominent drinks or food manufacturers behind many of them. Interestingly, today’s Times’ online edition (October 14th, 2015) exposes over a dozen British scientists who have financially gained from their association with a wellknown fizzy drinks giant. These same influential29 doctors and political advisors have been casting doubts over the now well-published and accepted link between obesity and sugar consumption. Add to this the constant association of the same ‘junk’ food manufacturers with sports, through expensive sponsorship and ad campaigns, and it’s no wonder we’re confused! Thankfully, the public seems more accepting of the fact that something needs to be done to stop the obesity epidemic and support for a tax on st philips adv4 3/2/15 17:03 Page 1 sugar is growing.

So trust your gut feeling when it comes to food, stay as close to nature as you can – and take every media report with a (large) pinch of salt. HOVE LUNCHEON CLUB Hove Luncheon Club is a friendly lunch club for older people based at Hove Methodist Church. We believe that food tastes better when shared and it’s a real pleasure to cook a meal every week for people who you know have been looking forward to coming all week. We don’t manage to please all the people all the time but we generally receive lots more compliments than criticisms! We meet every Tuesday during term time between 12:30 and 2:30pm and a three-course meal with transport currently costs £2 thanks to funding from the People’s Health Trust and the Sussex Community Foundation. Our members are varied and aged from 55 to 95 from around the Poets’ Corner area and as far afield as Hangleton and Mile Oak. We hire two buses with drivers from Brighton and Hove Community Transport to collect people for whom a bus journey is unmanageable. We have33 a fantastic committee, made up of members including Des our chairman, which meets regularly. Our volunteers are really at the heart of the organisation. They help with food preparation, setting up tables, serving food, clearing up and often just sitting and chatting to members. Peter is our resident poet and also in charge of the music (although we did veto the pan pipes a few weeks ago). We subscribe to the food charity FareShare, who redistribute food donated by supermarkets. We received some amazing items last week including tomatoes, ham,

parmesan, mushrooms, orange juice and Alien birthday cakes! It’s my job as co-ordinator to turn the food into a three-course meal so it’s a bit like Ready Steady Cook on a grander scale. We have after-lunch activities regularly – last week we had Jo doing massage. Some of the members had never tried one before and enjoyed it. In a few weeks we have a visit from a local historian to talk about the Great British seaside holiday with handling objects. We are also looking forward to our Christmas buffet with Christmas cakes and singing, held upstairs at Hove Methodist Church on 16th December. This year we are hoping that some members from the Brighton Festival Chorus will be able to sing for us. Here is a fascinating account of an ambitious Hove building project from yesteryear ..

WEST HOVE

VIEWS OF BRIGHTON & HOVE IN THE EARLY 19TH CENTURY There is one month left to see an exhibition of prints and drawings of early 19th century Brighton & Hove at Brighton Museum. The exhibition shows how Brighton developed into a fashionable seaside resort. There are pictures of past attractions such as the Chain Pier and the Royal Brighton Gardens, other grand projects which were never begun, and buildings which have survived to the present day, such as a lithograph of the Royal Sussex County Hospital from 1841. Pictured tot he right is The Anthaeum. Kate Elms, of The 35 Royal Pavilion & Museums, writes: “In the summer of 1833, an unnamed artist settled down to sketch an ambitious new building that was nearing completion on a piece of land north of Adelaide Crescent in Hove. Artists’ impressions such as this ink and wash drawing provide a visual record of life before the development of photography, and this example was particularly timely. Just a few weeks later - at the end of August 1833 – this vast iron and glass structure lay in ruins. “The Anthaeum, as it was known, was the brainchild of The Anthaeum in 1833,

local botanist Henry Phillips. He envisaged a horticultural Eden, complete with exotic trees and birds, a lake and a rocky hill. Designed by architect AH Wilds and engineer C Hollis, it was to be a domed glasshouse measuring over 65 feet high and 165 feet in diameter. It was a huge logistical project for the 1830s: the structure was formed from around 500 tons of iron, which was shipped into Shoreham Harbour and then dragged to the site by teams of horses. “The construction was fraught with difficulties and further hampered by professional disagreements. Wilds and Hollis argued that the dome needed a central, supporting pillar, but, faced with resistance from the contractor, both architect and engineer abandoned the job. This proved disastrous. Before Phillips had sought further advice, the contractor removed the temporary support and, on 30 August 1833, the Anthaeum collapsed. “Hundreds of people came to view the tangled remains, which stayed where they fell for another 20 years. They became an odd tourist attraction in their own right until they were eventually removed for the development of Palmeira Square.” The exhibition is on until 13th December at Brighton Museum and Art Gallery in the Royal Pavilion garden (closed on Mondays) and is free with Brighton Museum admission. News of a charity fundraiser for carers...

CARER-VAN BALL 2016 The Carers Centre will be holding a Charity Fundraiser Ball on Friday 12th February 2016. This will be for the purpose of raising funds to go towards a caravan that we plan to purchase. This caravan will allow carers to take cheap holidays. Often carers have to quit their job in order to carry out their caring role, and therefore many don’t have the money to get away for a few days, which can be essential in allowing them to maintain a healthy balance between their life and their caring role. A caravan available in East Sussex at subsidised rates will allow carers to take holidays more affordably. The 2011 Census data shows that Brighton & Hove has 23,967 people who identify themselves as carers, which represents 9% of the population. According to the Census, the economic value of the contribution made by carers in Brighton & Hove is £388.7 million a year.37 Without the amazing work of carers we would all be worse off, but it is vital that they too get the help they need to ensure they can live healthy, balanced lives. The ball will take place at the Hilton Brighton Metropole, Kings Road, Brighton, BN1 2FU. It will start at 19:00 with welcoming drinks, and will include a delicious three-course meal provided by the Metropole Hilton Hotel, music courtesy of the Hucksters, a charity auction, and other entertainment besides. The dress code will be evening wear.

WISH MEADOW This photo from 1911 was captioned “Six-a-side Tournament”. Wish Meadow extended from Langdale Gardens in the east to Wish Road in the west, and from Kingsway almost to New Church Road. It provided space for football pitches and was frequently used by circuses and fairs until the First World War. The backs of some houses can be seen. These houses on the west side of Langdale Gardens are probably numbers 2 and 4, or 6 and 8.

Update from QS Howlett Clarke As we welcome the beginning of autumn, October is the month at which Howlett Clarke reaches its peak with charity and local community events, and this year has been no different! The period began slightly earlier this year with our Jeans for Gene’s day followed shortly by the Macmillan Coffee Morning; both days provided us with cake, casual clothes and fundraising. We have some brilliant partnerships also running this October, we have teamed up with Bernardo’s in which you can receive a free Will (standard T&C’s apply) and all that is asked for in return is the consideration of leaving a gift in your Will to

Barnardo’s. To see if you’re eligible, you can get in touch with us using the contact details below. Lastly, to finish October off with a bang we have our Wear it Pink, in support of Breast Cancer Awareness, which should be great fun! At Howlett Clarke we are passionate about what we do and as your local law firm we pride ourselves on providing a friendly yet professional approach. Law can often seem as complex and we will always work to put it all into context for you, keeping in regular contact and helping you move forward.
