Welcome to the Portslade Mill February edition of Fiveways Gardens
A copy of a very old photograph showing Portslade Mill, probably in the 1860s. It was thought to have stood just above North Street, and may have been part of Red House Farm, some of the other buildings of which are also seen. It was demolished in the 1870s. In the distance were the trees which adjoined St Leonard’s Church in New Church Road, Hove.
Thanks to the Regency Society for this image from their photographic archives, The James Gray Collection. You can With the increasing interest in growing our own food, andsee maybe not more so much money toofgo round, and why not give it thousands historic pictures Brighton Hove www.regencysociety-jamesgray.com a go this year? But what if you have no spare ground to plant into? Well, athow about some carefully chosen nice
big containers in your front garden. Or, even better, get rid of some of that tired looking concrete or paving slabs and plant straight into the ground. I’m often asked what’s easy and suitable for growing in limited space. Top of my list are onion, beetroot, carrot and a lovely waxy salad potato, such as Charlottes. Nip out to your local garden centre or chat up friends that have an allotment, who’ll be able to get you a dozen or so seed potatoes from the allotment shop. Growing potatoes is simplicity itself.
them. In about late June/July, you’ll find a lovely crop of salad potatoes that you can just dig up as and when you want them. Easy, huh? If the whole crop’s dug up by the end of July, why not use the space to grow a range of gorgeous late summer flowers – Rudbeckias, verbenas, asters, grasses etc, that will keep you smiling through the rest of summer and well into autumn.
1. buy seed potatoes ASAP. 2. put them in a dark cold place (the loft works well for me) for a few weeks to “chit” or sprout. 3. push these potatoes into the ground where you want them to grow and cover with about 3-4 inches or 10cm of your garden soil. 4. relax and go and do some other things for a month or two. 5. when there’s lots of green leafy growth to about 8-12 inches, put another few inches of garden soil (or the bought stuff) onto the growing potato plants. You don’t want to completely cover them up, but this “earthing up” process means you won’t get green bits on your spuds and you’ll get a bigger crop. Do this several times over the early summer months. Keep the plants well watered once there’s plenty of foliage. You don’t need to feed
I was at a meeting recently with the council Parks department in Preston Park and I’m chuffed to report that there’s a strong commitment to planting some banks of wild flowers in the park and some native shrubs and trees. Both of these measures are great news for us and local wildlife.

LOCAL business... How to find the right builder a quick guide from 360 Home West Hove’s attractive housing, with its proximity to town and coast means extending or renovating can create the perfect family home.
Once your plans have been drawn up and approved and the finances have been cleared, you need to find the right builder. This can often be the trickiest part of the process. There are many places you could try: Checkatrade, friends’ recommendations, local adverts. But what makes a ‘good builder’? And how can you be sure that the relationship you form at the beginning of the project is as smooth at the end? When we started 360 Home, we drew up a list of qualities we considered paramount. We instil them into every member of our team and hope they’ll help guide your decision-making at this crucial stage. • Professional skills supported by an intelligent approach to building. • Friendly, polite, genuinely helpful craftspeople. • Skilled workmanship with fine attention to detail. • Innate knowledge of different period styles and a feel for what will work in each space. • Clear, open communication and pricing structures. • Reliable and responsive client care. We don’t pretend to be the cheapest builders in Sussex
but we do aim to offer extremely good value for your money. We encourage all our new clients to talk to our previous clients – after all, they’ve been through the process of finding the right builder and they’re best placed to give an honest appraisal. A good builder is a busy one It’s always worth waiting for the right builder. We schedule our projects carefully so we can be as attentive during the final stages of your build as we are at the beginning. We have many years’ experience designing, renovating and extending houses in West Hove and have created some clever solutions that add extra living space whilst keeping the flow of the house intact, maximising the light and designing bespoke storage. Our craftspeople are highly skilled and everyone takes personal pride in achieving an excellent finish. The monthly article from the Hove Civic Society....
Another Year of THE Hove Civic Society On the 16th October Hove Civic Society meets for its 53rd Annual General Meeting. Much has happened in those years and the pace of our activities and involvement in our local environment is hotting up. In the past year we have been active in commenting on new developments affecting Hove (and Brighton), including the former Lansdowne Hotel, the Hippodrome and the proposed changes to Hove Town Hall, which we supported. As far as the City Plan is concerned, we have made joint representations with the Brighton and Regency societies to all party leaders on the council, urging them to do everything they can to progress the plan to avoid it being thrown out by the Inspector. We have commented on the Shoreham Harbour Joint Area Action Plan and have welcomed the approval of the Rampion offshore windfarm by the Secretary of State in July. Our campaign for the restoration of our Victorian Tree Heritage resulted in some 35 street trees in the Poets’ Corner area. The campaign continues and we have already several streets where people are starting to prepare for street tree planting schemes. We have prepared a call for artists to select the first SECRET GARDEN GROUP

five sculptures to go on the Hove Plinth which will be issued as soon as we have raised some additional pump priming funds. We are delighted to announce that Sir Timothy Sainsbury, who was MP for Hove from 1973 to 1997, has agreed to be a patron for the Plinth. We were very encouraged by the call of Mike Weatherley, MP, for a bigger share of the city council’s funds for Hove and we are in the process of making a submission to the council to include environmental improvements to Church Road and accessibility improvements to the Hove Station footbridge in the next Local Transport Plan. Our annual lecture programme was again a success and I was particularly pleased about the panel discussion in April on the future of Hove. Our visits to places of local interest, including St George’s Church, West Blatchington Mill and the Lifeboat Station in Newhaven, were also a great success. I believe that societies like ours can make a great difference to the local environment. The more support and help we have, the more we can do for our own city. So please join and support us. The Jazz age kitchen The sales brochure survives from the development of the West Hove Garden Estate in the 1920s. The brochure for the new estate of houses laid out in the roads from Derek Avenue to St Keyna Avenue certainly did the hard sell to the jazz age housewife. In addition to this drawing of the kitchen, the brochure enthused that: “A tiled kitchen has always seemed beyond the reach of the average purchaser of a house of moderate size, yet in West Hove Garden Estate these are a feature. Only the house wife will realise what this means in labour saving and cleanliness, and a bright and shiny kitchen is one that all will appreciate.” “Specially deep sinks with white glazed combination draining boards have been fitted and still another feature of the kitchen is the oak enclosed Hygenia dresser equipped with all the culinary articles necessary.” “The Ideal boiler providing constant hot water burns up all refuse.” If anyone still has one of the oak dressers they probably now have a collector’s item! In the days before washing and dishwashers those “specially deep sinks” would have been a great asset. Washing cotton sheets was a heavy task with the housewife’s arms plunged deep into soap suds, then scrubbing, rinsing and wringing before putting the sheets through a mangle. Weather permitting, the sheets were pegged out on a washing line in the garden. Then the creases had to be ironed out before they were fully dry. No wonder the brochure highlighted the airing cupboard: “Cupboard room, an important item, has been fully considered. In each house there is a linen cupboard heated by hot water pipes which is connected direct from the domestic boiler.” As an alternative to all this hard work, households who could afford it may have sent the sheets to one of a number of laundries which then existed in Hove. These returned the weekly wash bleached, washed, starched and ironed, thereby avoiding the backbreaking chore at home. The brochure also explains that a gas point was fitted in the kitchen for a gas cooker. The drawing shows a typical one standing next to the boiler, whose top is also being used to
keep a kettle hot. The cooker is basically similar to one we use today, but in those pre-electric fan oven days ovens each had their own character. Even in 1960 my domestic science teacher emphasised that you had to get to know where the hot and cool parts in your gas oven were. Only then could you put roasts and baking in just the right spot to get perfect results. That “specially deep sink” would then have been required for washing up all the mixing bowls and utensils necessary in those pre-food processor and washing up machine days. No doubt the jazz age housewife did find their new kitchen labour saving, but it was still a great deal of hard work! Sue (kawhra@gmail.com)

Regular article about local exercise opportunities by West Hove resident Isobel Muir...
strength training As those of you who have read this article often will know, I am a firm believer in doing any sort of exercise and keeping fit in whichever way suits you, and today I am talking about the importance of keeping your body strong along with all the aerobic activity. In an attempt to get back to the glory days of last summer, when I went through a so-called “purple patch” where I ran fast and well for around six months, I have been getting back on the long runs. More importantly (or equally importantly to be more accurate), I have started a strength regime at the gym specifically targeting my legs, which had, unnoticed by me, become quite weak due to lots of running, not enough eating and no gym work. Unfortunately the only way to get back lost muscle is to hit the gym and do weights to break down the muscle and develop lots more nice new, strong and fresh stuff to propel me back to the better running of yesteryear. This is a perfect reason to use my Alive gold gym membership card that has been languishing in my bag since I started work and am no longer able to get to the classes that used to make up the full complement of my gym-going. Before I started, I made an appointment with Matt (gym instructor) to make sure I was doing the
right kinds of exercise that would help in my running and generally be functional rather than just for looks. I now have a routine that takes about 45 minutes to complete, which includes such beauties as the leg press machine, squat jumps, lunges and calf raises. One excellent thing about the gym is it is easy to see tangible proof of your improvement. I have gone up five stone on the leg press since I began, which means my legs are now five stone stronger. This in turn means I can transport myself much faster (or I shall be able to, once my fitness and endurance catches up), which in consequence should make a happier Isobel. I have also increased my other weights, so soon I shall hopefully have the strongest legs in the universe. OK, so perhaps not, but they shall be back to their old strength or better, and all down to a few trips to the gym each week! For more details about my life in exercise please visit my blog “IMFitHove”. Thanks. Happy exercising! isobelmuir@hotmail.com

Local business There are many great businesses in West Hove. Here is one of them...
PLUMFLOWER TAEKWONDO SCHOOL A FRESH APPROACH TO CHILDREN’S MARTIAL ARTS! Plumflower Taekwondo School opened its doors this May to offer Olympic-style Taekwondo training for children aged 5-11 years. The school is located at: St Philip’s Church Hall, New Church Road, Hove, BN3 4BB. Classes are every Tuesday, 4.30pm-5.30pm, and cost just £5. Plumflower Taekwondo is run by Rachel Innes. Rachel has taught Taekwondo for over 15 years. She founded and ran Vo’s 2 Taekwondo in Rottingdean for 10 years before taking a break to have her second child. Her original students now run their own Taekwondo school. Her career as a martial artist began in the USA and, on returning to the UK, Rachel competed nationally and internationally, including as a squad member of the Great Britain Technical Taekwondo Team. I sat down with Rachel to ask her why she chose Taekwondo and what makes it such a great martial art. What attracted you to Taekwondo? I was a dancer initially but had a lifelong dream to train for my black belt. I signed up for a class after having my first child back in the 90s. I only really intended to go once a week for fitness, but the constant challenge

had me hooked within a week! I loved the dynamics of Taekwondo; it can be full-on fitness training and sparring, but also graceful and technical requiring full concentration. I liked using my legs to kick. It really gives you a full work-out using every muscle in your body. But because you have to concentrate, you forget about the physical challenge. So what are the other benefits of training? Taekwondo, like all traditional martial arts, is a great format for life. You develop yourself and learn how to improve both mentally and physically. The values of Taekwondo are about respecting yourself and others. Because you work alongside your team-mates, you learn to support one another through the tough training and applaud each other’s achievements. The values are built on five rules for life: courtesy, integrity, self-control, perseverance and indomitable spirit.

LOCAL gardening... Here is our monthly gardening feature written by Nareesa Sulaiman, a local garden designer...
In the garden...october 2014 A month of glorious tones of red, orange, yellow and brown. Enjoy the fresh air while getting a good workout in the garden... Leaf collecting Oh, the joy of leaf raking; you spend time and energy raking and sweeping up all those fallen leaves, you pop in for a cuppa, look out of the window and the garden is covered again! Even in small gardens, it is important to sweep up leaves regularly; if left on the lawn too long, yellow patches develop and, if left in the beds too long, you get a multitude of slugs and snails! Collected leaves can be added to the compost heap and mixed in well. If you have the space, they can be bagged (plastic bags with holes in or hessian bags) and left in a corner to rot down till next autumn when they can be used on the beds in the form of leaf mould. If the leaves are large or have tough stems, such as horse chestnut leaves, they may need to be left for longer or shredded before bagging. Pruning Many perennial plants, i.e. those that die down in autumn but come back next spring, will have finished flowering. If the leaves are dried and the plants are look-
ing scruffy, cut back to 2cm from the base. If the leaves are still green and looking good, remove dried parts of the plant. Some perennials have attractive seed heads, such as Phlomis, Echinops and Achillea, plus many grasses. These can be left on the plant until next spring as they will add interest to the garden during the winter months, especially on frosty mornings. Any rose bush taller than a metre should be cut back to around half its height to reduce the risk of damage from high winds. For information on pruning climbing roses, take a look at the RHS website which gives easy-tofollow guidance. Feature plant for October Amelanchier lamarckii This large shrub/small tree has small star-shaped white flowers in spring, a contrast against the bronze new leaves. The leaves gradually turn to green and then give a blaze of reds and oranges in the autumn months. There is the additional bonus of non-poisonous dark red-purple berries in the summer months. Great places to visit Visit the gardens at Nymans to see examples of our feature plant, as well as many other trees displaying fine autumn colours. There are guided tours and self-led walks. Further information at http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/ Happy gardening! Nareesa

21 With possibly the longest title for a play ever, here we bring news of a local theatre group’s latest offering…
WE FOUND LOVE AND AN EXQUISITE SET OF PORCELAIN FIGURES ABOARD THE SS FARNDALE AVENUE Amateur dramatics is alive and well in Hove with The Sackville Theatre Company’s latest production being staged locally in October. Here is a paragraph outlining what promises to be a fun evening for all who attend: Flushed with their previous successes, the stalwart veterans of The Farndale Dramatic Society are poised to conquer yet another dramatic idiom. This production sails the SS Farndale Avenue into the world of thirties musical comedy. The ladies prove that the age of glamour, elegance and enchantment is not dead - “well, not quite”. Circumstances almost beyond their control threaten to wreck the evening’s entertainment, but the ladies and Gordon in true Farndale form soar above such mundane matters to present some catchy numbers and a stunning underwater sequence.

ROYAL PAVILION The second in a series of articles uncovering some of the treasures and stories of the Royal Pavilion...
A Micro-Masterpiece By Caan Walls Legend has it that, when the Royal Pavilion was purchased from the Royal Household by the Brighton Corporation in 1850, workmen who were exploring the cellars found many intriguing articles including hundreds of empty wine bottles, dusty tomes…and a large, square stone, face down on the floor. As it was turned, to the workmen’s surprise, the underside revealed a head and shoulders portrait of the Prince Regent dressed in robes of the Garter. Upon closer inspection the portrait turned out not to be oil on canvas as first thought but rather a micro-mosaic formed of incredible detail and skill. In 1819 Pope Pius VII requested from Sir Thomas Lawrence a replica of the portrait of the Prince Regent which Lawrence had painted of him and exhibited in the Royal Academy in 1818. Lawrence made several copies of his standing portrait of the Prince Regent, one of which hangs in the main entrance of the Royal Pavilion. Lawrence duly sent a replica to Rome which now hangs in the Vatican Galleries. Pius VII ordered the head and shoulders of the replica to be copied in

marble mosaic in the Vatican workshops by Domenico Moglia with the intention of presenting it as a gift to the Prince Regent. Born in 1780 in Cremona, Domenico Moglia was a designer, sculptor and woodcarver in the Vatican workshops. He later became a professor of design and was responsible for the ornament of the Arco della Pace in Milan. Pius VII died in 1823 and Moglia, as shown by the signature and date, didn’t complete the mosaic until 1829. The following year George IV also died and the portrait made its way to England only after the King’s death. It is said to have been sold to an anonymous buyer for £4,000. Whatever the true early history, we know from records kept in the Royal Pavilion archives that the mosaic was purchased by the Brighton Corporation from a Dr Willington in June 1888 at the cost of £150, who had received it as a gift from one of his patients, who we can assume was the original anonymous buyer. Whilst the early history of the mosaic is intriguing, most fascinating is the portrait itself which is formed out of half a million marble and semi-precious stones such as cornelians, lapis lazuli, beryl and corals for drapery and skin, and other rare stones for the jewels of the Order of the Garter. Each piece of stone is no more than a quarter of an inch long and an eighth of an inch wide. The eyes, being the centre-piece of this masterwork, contain hundreds of the tiniest pieces imaginable. It is considered by connoisseurs to be one of the finest Vatican mosaics in the world and is a masterly example of the use of stones to imitate paint. It took seven years to make and is in near perfect condition with no stone being lost. The original cost of the mosaic in 1819 is estimated to be £20,000, it is framed in iron-gilt and weighs around half a ton. The micro-mosaic is one of the most beautiful objects in the collections here at the Royal Pavilion, being a favourite of designer Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen among others. The only shame in this story is that the Prince Regent, who was such a patron of the arts and lover of beautiful and unique objects, did not get to see the finished portrait before his death. The portrait is currently on display in the Yellow Ante Room of the Royal Pavilion. SEE IT FOR FREE AS A MEMBER! Call 01273 295898 to join.

LOCAL CHARITY event... Here we feature a local charity event going on in the area...
John Renbourn IN CONCERT Hove Methodist Church Friday 7th November Stay Up Late, the Brighton-based charity, are proud to announce that the legendary guitarist John Renbourn is appearing at a benefit gig for them at Hove Methodist Church, Portland Road, on Friday 7th November. band were frustrated at seeing the lack of social opportunities that people with learning disabilities had, often typified by their fans having to leave gigs at 9pm due to inflexible staffing rotas for support staff. Hence the call to ‘Stay Up Late’.
John is maybe best known for his collaboration with guitarist Bert Jansch as well as his work with the folk group Pentangle. His work is often categorised as folk but it also covers blues, early music and classical, and he is a true master of his art. Support comes from well-known local folk treasure Bob Lewis, a fine singer of traditional Sussex songs. The night will be raising funds for the charity’s Gig Buddies project, which enables socially isolated people with learning disabilities and autism to enjoy live music by matching them up with a volunteer ‘buddy’ who loves the same kind of music. The scheme was started by the charity in Brighton and Hove in 2013 and has now spread to the rest of Sussex, with them recently being included in Nesta’s 50 New Radicals in the UK, working to change communities for the better. Stay Up Late’s roots as a charity lie firmly in music as it was founded by the punk band Heavy Load. Three of the members of Heavy Load had learning disabilities and the
(The band’s story was featured in the award-winning feature documentary, also called ‘Heavy Load’.) West Hove resident Paul Richards was the bass player in the band and is now the director of Stay Up Late, working to ensure that people with learning disabilities have full and active social lives, something that many of us take for granted. For more details on the event, contact Paul on paul@stayuplate.org or visit www.stayuplate.org where you can also find out more about the Gig Buddies project. All money raised on the night will go towards providing more opportunities for socially isolated people in Brighton and Hove.
