LOCAL GROUP.. The monthly article from the Hove Civic Society....
Inspirational Places and People Members of Hove Civic Society like to look behind the scenes to find out about possibly less well known endeavours for the public good, past and present. We do this through a combination of visits to local places and lectures by well-informed speakers. Recently we visited St. George’s Church in Kemptown, a place for worship and a thriving community centre. It has solar panels on its roof, and historical displays in its basement. The Reverend Andrew Manson-Brailsford explained the history of St. George’s from Regency times to the present day. The Church provides an important and beautiful venue for group activities, musical performances and a food bank. The solar panels were installed by the Brighton Energy Co-op, and some members were guided up onto the roof by Will Cottrell, Director. A few weeks later we went to the lifeboat station in Newhaven, and found out about the development of this essential service around our coasts and in busy rivers such as the Thames – all staffed by volunteers, some of whom regularly risk their lives. Following an excellent presentation by Margaret Kimber, RNLI Education officer, we went aboard a lifeboat, moored below, all high-technology, but none-the-less still totally depend-
ent on teams of local men and women who regularly go on critical rescue missions, sometimes in collaboration with lifeguards and helicopter crews. Later in July we visited West Blatchington windmill, from the ground to the sails (‘sweeps’), in the expert company of Peter Hill of ‘Friends of West Blatchington Windmill’, the charity which raises all the funds and carries out the maintenance of the windmill, a survivor of many mills in the area. Although no longer milling grain, it is a fine museum of local, rural life over 200 years. We were inspired and excited by the machinery and it reminded us of the human ingenuity that brought bread to families and food to farm animals. Here is a summary of our proposed monthly 2014-15 lecture programme. Full details will be made available from September on www.hovecivicsociety.org Clare Tikly (Vice Chair)

With the increasing interest in growing our own food, and maybe not so much money to go round, why not give it a go this year? But what if you have no spare ground to plant into? Well, how about some carefully chosen nice big containers in your front garden. Or, even better, get rid of some of that tired looking concrete or paving slabs and plant straight into the ground. I’m often asked what’s easy and suitable for growing in limited space. Top of my list are onion, beetroot, carrot and a lovely waxy salad potato, such as Charlottes. Nip out to your local garden centre or chat up friends that have an allotment, who’ll be able to get you a dozen or so seed potatoes from the allotment shop. Growing potatoes is simplicity itself.
them. In about late June/July, you’ll find a lovely crop of salad potatoes that you can just dig up as and when you want them. Easy, huh? If the whole crop’s dug up by the end of July, why not use the space to grow a range of gorgeous late summer flowers – Rudbeckias, verbenas, asters, grasses etc, that will keep you smiling through the rest of summer and well into autumn.
1. buy seed potatoes ASAP. 2. put them in a dark cold place (the loft works well for me) for a few weeks to “chit” or sprout. 3. push these potatoes into the ground where you want them to grow and cover with about 3-4 inches or 10cm of your garden soil. 4. relax and go and do some other things for a month or two. 5. when there’s lots of green leafy growth to about 8-12 inches, put another few inches of garden soil (or the bought stuff) onto the growing potato plants. You don’t want to completely cover them up, but this “earthing up” process means you won’t get green bits on your spuds and you’ll get a bigger crop. Do this several times over the early summer months. Keep the plants well watered once there’s plenty of foliage. You don’t need to feed
I was at a meeting recently with the council Parks department in Preston Park and I’m chuffed to report that there’s a strong commitment to planting some banks of wild flowers in the park and some native shrubs and trees. Both of these measures are great news for us and local wildlife.

KINGSWAY AND WEST HOVE RESIDENTS’ ASSOCIATION
THE SUN IN WEST HOVE Even if this article was on page 3, it’s not about Rupert Murdoch’s Sun newspaper. Read the West Hove Directory magazine instead - it’s better! This summer was one of the hottest ever; we’ve had plenty of sunshine. The sun is 92 million miles away but without it life wouldn’t exist, no light for plant growth and warmth for animals. Global warmth has always been due to the sun until the Industrial Revolution, when humans added to it. Over-use of fossil fuels released heat and gases, carbon dioxide, methane and fluorocarbons, which escaped into the atmosphere and reduced the protective ozone layer. Penetration of the sun’s light increased and further heated up the planet, hence the ‘greenhouse effect’ or ‘global warming’. With more extremely hot summers expected in the future, Noël Coward’s song, ‘Mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun’, suggests that there are dangers. Let’s look at them: Dangers The main risks are from ultraviolet (UV) light: Repeated sunburn and/or prolonged sunbathing, especially in fair-skinned people. Exposure without clothing or sunscreen creams (factor 30+). • Skin damage and cancer

Ageing of the skin with loss of elasticity and wrinkling is accelerated by sun damage to DNA, causing the ‘old prune’ look! Skin carcinoma and melanoma are the cancer risks and people with many benign, dark pigmented moles (sunspots) are more prone. There is a delay of about 20 years between exposure and cancer. • Eye damage Excess sun exposure risks cataracts, macular degeneration (loss of central vision), cornea and eyelid damage. Wear UV protective sunglasses. However the sun is also good in prevention of some diseases: Benefits To benefit, you only need to expose the hands and face to the sun for about 15 minutes, several times a week, longer for dark-skinned people with more natural melanin skin pigment. It’s best to avoid the fiercest sun between 11am and 3pm. • Vitamin D creation Invisible to the human eye, ultraviolet light triggers production of the ‘sunshine’ vitamin D. Needed to absorb calcium, iron, magnesium and zinc, it prevents rickets in children and makes strong, healthy bones. Vitamin D reduces soft and brittle bone risk in elderly and malnourished adults. Blood pressure and cholesterol levels fall. Breast, ovarian and prostate cancer risk drops. • Natural disinfectant Sunlight kills bacteria by damage to their DNA. Soldiers in WW1 used it to cleanse wounds by exposure to sunshine. • Skin disease treatment Sunlight improves eczema, psoriasis and acne. Hospital skin clinics use PUVA or UVB light treatments, a modified artificial sunlight. • Mood elevation Sunshine causes the brain to produce serotonin, a mood enhancer. Lack of it can cause ‘SAD’ (seasonal affective disorder) in sensitive people, a depression in winter. By resetting your biological clock, exposing your skin to sunlight helps jet lag recover, especially after long flights. As with most things, moderation is beneficial, excess is hazardous. Save your skin for the future as the changes are permanent! Mike Sharman (KAWHRA)

LOCAL gardening... Here is our monthly gardening feature written by Nareesa Sulaiman, a local garden designer...
In the garden...September 2014 September is often a period of good weather here in Hove so it’s a great month to get jobs done before the cooler, wetter weather sets in. Autumn is traditionally a good time for introducing new plants into the garden; the soil is still warm but the sun is lower in the sky so new plants have a good chance of establishing a strong root system before the growing season ends. Plants to introduce into your garden this month include trees, shrubs, perennials and spring- and summer-flower bulbs. Bulb ordering and planting Many online suppliers have special offers on bulbs this month. If you have a small garden, it is worth combining your order with friends so that you can take advantage of multi-buy prices plus share the cost of postage. Bulbs look good planted in pots, in beds or even planted in lawns. Ideally, soil should be moist and well-draining. If necessary, improve the soil by digging over and adding well-rotted manure to improve water retention or aid drainage. As a general rule, plant bulbs at three times their depth. Try to avoid walking over where the bulbs have been planted.
Lawn care It may seem old-fashioned but all lawns will benefit from some TLC this month. First, cut the grass with the mower set to low. Next, use a metal spring-tine rake to vigorously rake the lawn, removing the layer of dead grass and moss. This can be hard work but is very important for a healthy lawn. Follow by aerating, i.e. introducing air holes to improve drainage and soil quality. Using a garden fork, make holes 15cm deep in rows 15cm apart. Powered scarifiers/aerators are available to hire/buy to make the job easier. Lawn top-dressing is optional as is autumn weed and feed, but it really helps to improve the look of the lawn if you add grass seed to any bare patches. Feature plant for September Rudbeckia fulgida var. sullivantii ‘Goldstrum’ Also called black-eyed Susan, the yellows of the Rudbeckias shine in the autumn sunlight. They come in several varieties of differing heights and shades but I have chosen this long-flowering variety as it is commonly found in local nurseries. Great places to visit Staying local this month, the flower beds along Old Steine and around the new playground at The Level are looking amazing. There are some interesting flower combinations which may inspire ideas for your own garden. Happy gardening! Nareesa

Regular article about local exercise opportunity by local West Hove resident Isobel Muir...
Run Brighton As we slide seamlessly into autumn, it can mean only one thing: half marathon training! I have, once more, signed up for the Brighton Half which happens in February. This always seems like a good idea and well in the future when I do it (around March of the preceding year – just after the last one is over). Then suddenly and inexplicably it is September and I have done nothing to begin preparing. Fear not! RunBrighton is here to save us all! Catering for all runners, be it total beginners, or those who just wish to improve their marathon time, the friendly and knowledgeable RunBrighton Ambassadors are here to guide you through. The runs are on Sunday mornings starting in October and begin at around six miles to ease you in gently. The Ambassadors will lead pace groups, so you are always guaranteed a group to run with at a pace suitable to your current level of fitness and speed. The runs are on a variety of terrains, from flat road runs to runs over the downs containing some “delightful” hills. I must admit that I am not a fan of hills or off-road running, but can’t deny that it makes you a stronger runner and is good training for a flat road half marathon, as once you get onto the lovely flat tarmac after months on the stupid, muddy hills it seems a breeze in comparison. Of course many people love running off road and don’t like the flat, boring, uninspiring roads, but those people are obviously insane. Joking! Everyone likes their own thing and that is what is good about these runs – they cover all types of terrains which means you get to do runs you are not so likely to do if left to your own devices without a group to run with. To join this training programme you will need to sign up with RunBrighton and it does cost money, but really it is worth it as you will have a guaranteed group of like-minded folk to run with. You will also be able to learn everything about marathon running at the free seminars that come with your entrance fee and you will no doubt make lots of new friends who you can meet up with at your chosen race. RunBrighton is aimed at those running the Brighton Marathon but works just as well
for the Brighton Half and any other full or half marathon that takes place in February – April. For more details about my life in exercise please visit my blog “IMFitHove”. Thanks. Happy exercising! isobelmuir@hotmail.com

Local business There are many great businesses in West Hove. Here is one of them...
Viva verde flower shop Viva Verde is not your typical flower shop; it is a sensory explosion with colours, scents and textures. Imagine a riot of colourful flowers, a wonderful aroma, buckets of foliage along with potted plants, herbs and a friendly welcome. You will find all this in the heart of the bustling Richardson Road community of independent shops.
Both inside and out our displays are arranged on old apple crates, a wooden wagon, an old wash-stand; our flowers are in vintage glass with statues and ornaments mixed amongst it all. You will find a continually changing selection of high quality flowers and plants with the emphasis on British and locally grown products in season. We specialise in a relaxed style using country garden types of flowers and foliage, but we are also keeping up to date with the latest trends in both flowers and design
ideas. All events and occasions catered for and delivered. If it’s gifts that you are after, we have an amazing array of individual plant pots and vintage vases, handmade soya candles (made in Steyning) and currently a vast selection of English concrete statues. This range is completely weather proof and offers Buddhas of every size and shape alongside plaques and birdfeeders. Caroline Gardner gift cards are available for every occasion along with handmade cards by local artists. You will also find a selection of Fair Trade gifts, cushions, jewellery and scarves mixed in with lanterns, tea light holders and other small ornaments that help to create a snooper’s paradise. The owner, Lynnette Cash, is fully qualified and has 15 years’ experience in both London and on the South Coast. Her previous employment includes managing the flower shop at BBC Television Centre as well as lead florist at In Water, a design studio with contracts which included the National Portrait Gallery, The Ivy restaurant and the cafés in Tate Modern. Lynnette and her team are friendly, dedicated, knowledgeable, experienced florists, who are always willing to go that extra mile, to help with any queries you may have and to pass on our passion for flowers. The walking club
“The best way to start the day”; “I feel happier after a speed walk by the sea”; “I’m definitely fitter”. These are just a few of the reasons why you will find a group of walkers striding out at a brisk pace along the seafront bright and early, three mornings a week. The group was started nearly a year ago by Debbie and Mel who wanted regular exercise but were not keen on joining a gym and for health reasons couldn’t run, so they started Hove Weekly Beach Walks on Meet-Up - the online social network. Very quickly, the group attracted others who all shared the same desire to get out there and get healthy. Yes, it’s an early start…7.15am does not suit everybody, but it does mean that those who need to can get their exercise quota in before work. There is also something quite special about early mornings on the seafront. Not only are there the morning pleasantries exchanged with regular dog walkers, runners and fresh air sleepers but every morning the sea, the beach, the sky, the view look different. The amazing sunrises in the winter months have given way to calm summer seas and sunny mornings. There have been some cold, rainy and windy walks too! Brisk walking is said to be the closest thing to perfect exercise. It is great not only for those who have injuries which make high impact exercise more difficult, but it is one of the few physical activities that transcend age, ability and gender - and it has been proven to significantly improve health mentally as well as physically. In fact, the Wednesday early morning walk has been taken on as a Healthwalk, a wonderful programme of walks across the city. Walking in the fresh air beats a sweaty gym any day… It also allows for a lot of chatting…something this group is very good at! New walkers are always made to feel welcome. The walkers set off at 7.15 sharp every Monday, Wednesday and Friday morning from the corner of Coleman Avenue and Portland Road in Hove and walk down to and along the seafront and back again. This three-mile route takes about 45-50 minutes. The group also meet up for coffee once a month and they are slowly making their way around the coffee shops of Hove. It’s also a great alternative to working out in the gym or jogging. We’re a new netball club in Hove set up by a small group of friends who wanted to try out the traditional school sport again. The group has grown through word of mouth, posters and online marketing, but we are still looking for more players. Most of us haven’t played for over twenty years and we’re gradually relearning the rules and learning some new skills while making new friends as the club grows. Players say it has become ‘the highlight of my week’ and ‘brilliant fun’. Fast-paced and great exercise, netball remains a really good game to play. Although we’re mainly meeting for fun, the competitive element means you push yourself a little bit more. And when you’re concentrating on getting the ball, you forget you’re actually doing exercise. Netball can burn up to 600 calories a session with its
fast, explosive sprints and longer jogs, improves upper body strength and flexibility with its quick changes of direction plus helps hand-to-eye co-ordination. Each session we meet and do gentle warm-ups and stretches followed by some ball skill and tactic training. We then play a friendly game with players choosing what position to play and with regular breaks to swap position and have a breather. Afterwards, we sometimes go to the pub for a well-earned glass of wine and a chat. So far, we are not in a league but it is something we hope to do in the future. We’re open to all and operate a dropin policy. Just turn up and play, £5 per person. We play on Wednesday evenings from 8.30 – 9.30pm on the indoor netball courts at King Alfred Leisure Centre, Kingsway, Hove. The first session back after the summer is 10th September. Please do come and join us. If you’d like to know more email Caroline at c.sutton@virgin.net or contact Helen on 07789 912360.
