Welcome to September’s edition of your local publication... Welcome to The West Hove Directory and we hope you have enjoyed a great summer in this fantastic area of Hove. It has certainly been a mixed summer weatherwise. I have stood outside my house and measured 102 degrees during that heatwave early in July and I have also headed out for the day in a jacket and with a woolly hat in my pocket just in case as it was so chilly! It has certainly been predictably unpredictable in a truly British way! We have some good local content for you this month. Another local councillor is featured on page 5. We also have an interview with another interesting local resident on page 11. There are a variety of other local articles this month so we hope you find some things of interest. Have a great September! LOCAL COUNCILLOR...

The third in a series of interviews with all the local councillors in West Hove…

MEET Wish COUNCILLOR GARRY PELTZER DUNN Garry was re-elected in May as a Conservative councillor for Wish ward. He is a former Mayor of Brighton & Hove and leader of the old Hove Borough Council. How long have you lived in West Hove? About sixty years – that sounds terrible - part of two centuries and two millennia! What is your background? My entire working life was involved with property. I qualified as a chartered surveyor and worked in Brighton and Hove for many years. My surveying practice was based in Portland Road for a good number of years. This has of course given me an insight into the many problems people experience with housing. How long have you been a councillor and what is your proudest achievement? I was first elected to the Old Hove Borough Council in 1971. I became a member of Brighton and Hove Council in 1999. My proudest achievement is probably that most times I seem to have been seen to be a good local councillor who has represented residents in a reasonable manner. Although I have been defeated in some elections I have in the main managed to encourage residents to vote for me! My aim throughout my time

on the council is to try to ensure that residents get good services at a fair price. What do you hope to change in the area over the next four years? Resident involvement is vital with local associations being an essential cog in representing residents’ views. Groups such as KAWHRA are greatly appreciated. I would hope that other groups will become involved with the West Hove Forum which at the present time has over 20 local spokespersons representing our area. Although improvements have taken place in Stoneham and Wish Park I would like to see further improvements to the Hove Lagoon and the esplanade. It’s time that monies are spent in our ward (and not just in central Brighton). Commerce is vital to our area and I (together with my fellow councillor, Robert Nemeth) will do everything we can to make the Boundary Road shopping area more attractive to traders and shoppers alike. What are your interests outside politics? Chip (my wife) and I have two children and three grandchildren. We are lucky to be in close touch and enjoy their company (even when we disagree!). I enjoy sport and now play bowls (Hove and Kingsway Club) with cricket having now given me up! I am a life member of the Sussex County Cricket Club and the Hove Civic Society and a member of the Hove Deep Sea Anglers, although the only thing I fish for is compliments! How can people contact you? Living at 234 New Church Road, I am easily accessible and hold a surgery there every month (apart from August). My telephone number is 01273 291186. Robert Nemeth and I are in the process of arranging residents’ surgeries throughout the ward, and the venues and times will be announced very shortly. We will continue to issue our ward newsletters by email and if you would like to put your name on our list please contact me (garry.peltzerdunn@brighton-hove.gov.uk). In conclusion please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any problems with which you feel I might be able to be of some assistance.

MODENA GARAGE At the north end of Rutland Gardens, this long line of garages stretching to Modena Road were erected in the 1920s. LOCAL GRoup... Here is the regular update from the Kingsway & West Hove Residents’ Association…

A BOAT TOUR AROUND SHOREHAM PORT Shoreham Port invited members of KAWHRA and other local groups to boat trips between the lock gates and the harbour’s eastern end. Starting from Nautilus House, the port’s Southwick head office, we enjoyed a fascinating tour with an impressive running commentary about the port since Roman days, through the Industrial Revolution, to the present day. In the 19th century the port was mainly used for coal storage for the old gas works (1870) and power station (1897-1987) on the south bank of the canal. We saw old and brand new warehouses, giant cranes for new businesses importing and processing timber, steel, sand and grain. We saw the flat area of land between the canal and the main road where part of the A259 coast road collapsed into the canal in 1957. The port is successful and thriving with new businesses like ArcelorMittal and ParkerSteel. However, they increase the heavy lorry traffic alongside the port which can only enter and exit via the road beside Hove Lagoon and traffic lights up to the A259. The main cycle route passes along Basin Road South and so a cycle path is needed urgently, perhaps in conjunction with the forthcoming bolstering of sea defences to safeguard the port and A259. A Problem About Oil Seepage And Smell There has been some complaint about an unpleasant

smell in our area coming from 500 metres west of the port’s eastern end. Peter Davies, Development Director, wrote to KAWHRA and stated: “We are doing all we can, working with all the relevant agencies, in dealing with the issue in a proper and responsible manner. The seepage has unfortunately arisen at no fault of our own due to historic contamination left when the old gas works closed many years ago. It has only become an issue since the storms last year which resulted in exposing deeper layers of the foreshore and causing a small amount of oil to seep out at low tides. It has occasionally caused a noticeable odour in the nearby area. We have been advised by Public Health England it is not harmful. We have employed specialist consultants to advise us and the other agencies on how the seepage may be stopped, but the gas works occupied a large site and the seepage mechanism is complicated, so the solutions are not simple nor will they be speedy. In the meantime we are providing information on our website: http://www.shoreham-port.co.uk/Oil-Seepage-onPortslade-Beach ” Mike Sharman kawhra@gmail.com

Here we feature another talented resident of West Hove...

LOCAL PERSON ANNA LINSTRUM-THEATRE DIRECTOR Anna Linstrum lives in St Leonard’s Road and is the director of the new musical comedy CRUSH, which runs at Theatre Royal Brighton from 22 – 26 September. How long have you lived in West Hove? Two and a half years and I’ve loved every minute. I never want to move. What do you like about the area? Seeing ships docked in the port right at the end of our road, the lights twinkle on them at night and I can see them from our upstairs window. I love that in West Hove we’re far enough from the centre of the city to be quieter and less touristy but that I can cycle on the gorgeous coastal cycle path and in 15 minutes be in town seeing a show or shopping. I love being on the beach in four minutes (and in the sea swimming in about seven if the weather’s good!) and I’m so happy that The Railway pub has been renovated recently - it’s lovely in there. What sort of shows have you directed in the past? I’ve worked on a lot of musicals, I recently directed a big UK tour of a Cole Porter musical - High Society, and I spent many years on The Sound Of Music which began at the London Palladium. People may remember that show because it was the first time Andrew Lloyd Webber had the idea to cast a leading role via television. Connie Fisher won and she was our Maria! It was all very surreal. Tell us more about CRUSH... It’s a musical comedy set in a girls’ boarding school in 1963, a jolly-japes adventure about saving the school from a hideous headmistress. We encompass a gay love story and a tap number with hockey sticks and we’re aiming it at all ages, it’s definitely not just for youngsters. The story is by Maureen Chadwick who wrote Bad

Girls the TV show, and also Footballers’ Wives, so she knows how to please an audience. The songs are really catchy and I’m having trouble getting them out of my head every evening when I come home from rehearsals. Have you worked at the Theatre Royal before? I’ve worked on several shows as an Associate Director which have toured there - Noises Off by Michael Frayn which came from The National Theatre, also a show called See You Next Tuesday with Ardal O’Hanlon from Father Ted, but this is the first time a show has played Brighton that I’m the main director on, so I’m thrilled and excited that it’s coming to my adopted home town. How can we get tickets? Visit www.atgtickets.com/brighton or call 0844 871 7650 (booking fees apply).

LOCAL news... Here is an appeal from a local charity....

Barnardo’s Supported Lodgings More Hosts Needed Could you offer more than a room? Earlier this year, we asked for people to provide lodgings and support for vulnerable young people aged 16 to 21. We have now managed to find and approve our first four host households and we have young people in placements who are working towards living independently, which is fantastic news. We also have a number of other people who have expressed an interest and/or started the assessment process. There is still a real need for more placements though. Most residents in Brighton & Hove are familiar with the lack of housing in the city. Whilst the majority of people find somewhere safe to live, the same can’t be said of some vulnerable young people. The children’s charity Barnardo’s and a number of Brighton residents are trying to prevent this from happening by finding new homes for young people at risk of living on the streets. Olly Davidson, the Service Manager, said: “Brighton and Hove is full of generous-spirited people. We are pleased to be working with some of these people to offer a second chance to some young people who don’t have anywhere else to go.” The scheme was started at the end of 2014 alongside Brighton & Hove City Council, with the aim of supporting young people who may be homeless or leaving the care system. It offers supported lodgings to help them make a smooth transition to independent living. Eddie Miller, 78, a Brighton & Hove Supported Lodgings host, said: “I can see it’s a very good idea to have young care leavers staying with a family, so they can learn to budget, cook and live on their own.” Barnardo’s is looking for more volunteers to open their doors to vulnerable young people. The service is looking

for individuals or families to provide a home for 16 to 21 year-olds, along with emotional care, practical advice and confidence building to boost self-sufficiency. Hosts will receive round-the-clock assistance, a key worker, a training programme and an allowance of £150 per week. Lyn Lynch, also a host, said: “There are lots of expectations on this generation and not all of them are helpful. We can show these young people that they are important and they can have their own goals and don’t have to conform…and can make a difference in the world.” If you would like more information about becoming a Supported Lodgings host, contact Olly or Lauren on 01273 412010, email brightonlodgings@barnardos.org.uk or follow @bhovelodgings on Twitter.

local Gardening... Here is our monthly gardening feature written by Nareesa Sulaiman, a local garden designer...

In the garden... September 2015 Something for nothing... Everyone likes to get something for nothing. The start of the new school year signals to many of us that autumn is just around the corner. This is a good month to get out into the garden to collect seeds, cuttings and to divide perennials to give you new plants at no extra cost. Here are a few ideas... Take cuttings from your favourite geraniums and fuchsias by making a clean cut below the third pair of leaves from the top of a healthy looking stem. Remove any flowers and the lowest pair of leaves. Put the cutting in a bottle of water, resting on the top so that about 2cm of stem is submerged. Leave the bottle on a sunny window ledge until roots develop. Plant into small pots of compost and keep in a cool light place until late spring next year when the new plants can be planted out. Collect seeds from plants with seed pods such as sweet peas and hollyhocks. Seeds are best collected on warm dry days and stored in paper bags or envelopes. Remember to write the name of the plant and date of collection on the bag/envelope. Many perennials such as crocosmia and sedums benefit from being divided every few years although a few

Helenium “Moerheim Beauty”

plants, such as peonies, hate being disturbed. The RHS website is a good starting place if you are unsure whether you should divide a plant. If dividing, ease the plant out of the ground using a garden fork. Tease the plants apart. If the clump is tightly knit, insert two garden forks, back to back, into the middle of the clump and push the handles apart. If the plants resist even this, you may need to use a pruning saw to cut through the clump. Replant a small portion of the plant in the original location. Divided plants can then be planted in new locations around the garden or potted up in compost to swap with another gardener. Feature plant for September Helenium ‘Moerheim Beauty’ This long-flowering perennial looks good at the back of a border amongst grasses and other late-flowering plants such as Rudbeckias. Great places to visit Sussex Prairies on the edge of Henfield has eight acres of perennials and grasses planted in large drifts. At this time of year, the grasses look stunning amongst the lateflowering perennials. £6. www.sussexprairies.co.uk Happy gardening! Nareesa

NEW HEADTEACHER AT HOVE PARK SCHOOL

ROB NIEDERMAIER-REED Rob Niedermaier-Reed is the new headteacher at Hove Park School. We found out more about him… Where were you working before? I was the headteacher at Chessington Community College in the Royal Borough of Kingston for six years. Before that, I worked as a deputy headteacher in Lewisham and as an assistant headteacher in Tower Hamlets. Why did you want to come to Hove Park? My previous school had recently had a highly successful Ofsted inspection. This was followed by a visit from the Secretary of State for Education recognising the hard work of everyone - students, parents, colleagues and governors - that had led to the transformation of our school. I loved working at my old school but the time was right to think about the next stage of my career. I saw the advert for Hove Park and it immediately caught my attention. A job in beautiful Hove! I investigated a little further and became more excited. Colleagues and friends knew about Hove Park School and everything they told me was positive. The moment I walked through the door, I liked the atmosphere. The first people I met were friendly and

welcoming. During the interview days, I was increasingly impressed with what I saw. Relationships between students and adults were clearly based on respect. Hove Park was evidently an outward looking school committed to serving the local community. The school had made impressive improvements and there was an almost tangible feel of optimism and ambition. I soon realised that I really wanted to work at Hove Park School. Do you plan to make any changes at the school? Through the hard work of our staff, students and parents, Hove Park is already a good school with outstanding features. We will now become a truly outstanding school. Our school will be characterised by superb teaching and extensive extra-curricular opportunities that guarantee the best possible education for every child. Our children will display the highest standards in their studies, their appearance and their behaviour. Where do you stand on the issue of becoming an academy? I have always worked in local authority maintained schools. Schools should fully engage with and be accountable to their communities. It was immediately obvious to me that Hove Park is an outward-looking school and it is a school that has experienced considerable success as part of the family of maintained schools in Brighton and Hove. Unless government policy determines otherwise then I want us to remain as a community maintained school. What are your interests outside work? I love cycling and I’m really looking forward to exploring Sussex on my bike. I love rugby. I have coached, refereed and (many years ago!) played a little but nowadays I am primarily an obsessive Leicester Tigers fan (and still a season ticket holder who goes to most home games!). I also love film and one of the leaving presents from my old school was a year’s membership of a local Brighton cinema.

HEALTH... The next in a series of articles with advice from local physiotherapist Martina Bisping...

FOCUS ON PHYSIOTHERAPY

WHAT IS TENNIS ELBOW? Tennis elbow is a repetitive strain injury of tendons in the outer elbow. Tennis players can get it from practising topspin but the people I see are more likely to have overused a mouse or screwdriver. What are the symptoms? In tennis elbow, the muscles that pull your wrist and fingers up are overused, putting strain on your elbow tendons, and so you are just as likely to feel pain along the forearm and into the hand as you are to feel the sharp local pain at the elbow. Some people have pain when resting but usually the pain comes on as you lift a cup of tea or twist the wrist to use a key or a kettle. What should I do if I have tennis elbow? Keep using your arm, but avoid repetitious activities by using the mouse with your other hand or buying an electric screwdriver. With computers, adjust your desk so you sit upright with the keyboard and mouse close to you so you don’t hold your arms up and can rest your wrist on the desk. Important are specific stretches and strengthening exercises which are easy to find on the internet.

HMS FATBOY AT HOVE LAGOON A large wooden pirate ship was installed in the playground at Hove Lagoon in time for the school holidays. HMS Fatboy was donated by the Big Beach Café, owned by DJ Norman Cook, aka Fatboy Slim, and managed by Danny Stockland. Norman Cook said: “Danny and I have both watched our children grow up in this park. It’s a great place to spend time, what with the watersports on the lagoon, the skatepark and pirate boats and crazy golf. We wanted to give a little back to the community as a thank you for their support and help the area to be a hub for residents. So we contributed to the Norman Cook with daughter Nelly playground which needed a Photo by www.snapitnow.co.uk bit of a boost right now.” The council is working to improve the Hove Lagoon play area and additional funding has been found to replace other items in the playground. The installation of the new pirate ship was paid for by Brighton & Hove City Council.

LOCAL NEWS... Great news for Wish Park thanks to Sussex Heart Charity and local residents...

LIFE-SAVING DEVICE FOR WISH PARK For those going to Wish Park (named Aldrington Recreation Ground by the council but by no-one else) you may notice something new in the park. Attached to the side of the café is a big yellow box and inside that is a lifesaving piece of equipment - a public access defibrillator. If someone has a heart attack, they can go on to have a cardiac arrest – where the electrics of the heart go haywire and they die within a couple of minutes. The thing which can stop them dying is doing CPR (pressing up and down on the chest - forget about the kiss of life) and using a defibrillator to send electricity through the heart to jump-start it. These defibrillators can be used by any member of the public and there is no need for training to use them. In addition they cannot cause any harm - as unless a shock is needed it will not deliver one. The purchase of the defibrillator was organised by local residents, the local café in Wish Park, West Hove Dynamos FC who are based in Wish Park, along with the Sussex Heart Charity who provided a large grant to go along with the £450 raised by the local residents. Training has been organised by A&E consultant and local resident Dr Rob Galloway. He said: “These are life-saving

devices and can be used by anyone. If you see someone who has collapsed and has no signs of life, call 999, start CPR and get someone to get the defibrillator. The 999 operators will give the access code to you. Turn on the defibrillator and do as it says. We know they work. The Sussex Heart Charity provided eight for the AMEX stadium and there have been three cardiac arrests there in the last five years – each one surviving and coming back to watch more Albion matches! Without these defibrillators, they would all have died.” Dr Galloway would now like to help raise money for the Sussex Heart Charity to buy more defibrillators for Hove Lagoon and any other parks or places where a lot of people would benefit. If you are interested in the work of the Sussex Heart Charity, please go to www.sussexheartcharity.org, and for further information on training for the Wish Park defibrillator, contact drrobgalloway@gmail.com.

Caroline Marsland Art has been called deep play where you can reach a meditative state that helps you access the right hand side of the brain where your creativity lies. Lucy Parker I am a floral artist. Connecting with flowers in a creative way can often trigger a healing process within ourselves we may not even realise. Halima Ridley

LOCAL NEWS... Here is a worthwhile fundraising event to get involved in...

THE BIG SLEEPOUT 2015 Do you often find yourself taking for granted a warm house at the end of a cold winter’s day, tucking into a hot meal and finally climbing into a comfortable bed? For so many sleeping rough around Brighton & Hove, this is far from their reality. The Big Sleepout 2015, run by Portland Road-based charity Off The Fence, will give a glimpse of what life is like for those without homes and raise the much needed funds to rebuild their lives. Will you join us on Saturday November 14th? The Big Sleepout is another annual Off The Fence fundraising event with a twist! Held in the grounds of Aldrington School, from 7pm to 8am the following day, it is the best way to spread awareness of homelessness, to experience sleeping rough and raise money through sponsorship. There’s also a complimentary breakfast for all participants courtesy of our friends at Crossover Brighton. If you’d like to take part, put up a poster or receive flyers to share, email us at: fundraising@offthefence.org.uk. We believe our services and your support can make the biggest difference to so many lives around our city.
