The Seagulls’ captain is a local resident...

MEET BRUNO OF BRIGHTON & HOVE ALBION Bruno Saltor (known just as Bruno) is the captain of Brighton & Hove Albion and lives with his family in West Hove. Brighton & Hove Albion so nearly made it to the Premier League last season. What do you think your chances are of getting promotion this season? I think we’ve got plenty of chances to get promoted but we cannot think that far away; we need to think just about every single game, and take every single game as it comes. I think last season we did that. We 5 were just thinking about every single game and we were successful. We hope this season is going to be just a little bit better. Who is the best player you have ever played with or against? Against - Messi, of course. He is the best player I’ve played against, for sure. With - I’ve played with a few good players as well, but maybe Juan Mata, David Silva and David Villa would be three of the best players.

How does life in West Hove differ from your home country of Spain? It’s so nice, life here. I’m so happy to live in West Hove; it’s a nice area for my family, for me. It’s so friendly, everyone is so kind. The area is lovely and the seafront. We hear you have your own fashion label. Tell us more about that... That’s done. I sold the company. But it was a nice business, because my wife, me and the other partners, we love fashion. It’s quite complicated, like any business, but we really enjoyed it. What would you like to do when you retire from playing football? I don’t know yet, to be honest. I’m really focused on my football career. I would like to know what I’m going to do. All my life I’ve just been playing football and it’s finding the right thing to do after. That’s maybe one of the most important things, because I’ve got plenty of life in front of me and I need to find something that I’m going to be happy to do. Maybe something around football, maybe not, but we’ll see.

The new season has started so time to get yourself kitted up...

NEW KIT FOR BRIGHTON & HOVE ALBION Brighton & Hove Albion have revealed the club’s new 2016/17 Nike home kit – which is now available to order at seagullsdirect.co.uk. The club’s new home shirt retains the traditional blueand-white design, including a white back and red Nike swoosh, with red numbers and lettering to ensure maximum visibility. It is a throwback to the 1978/79 kit, which Peter Ward and his team-mates wore on their way to winning promotion to the old First Division. The shorts are blue with a white stripe that continues down the sides. Blue socks with a white Nike swoosh complete the kit. The kit has been constructed using the 7 latest Nike technology, featuring lightweight and durable materials for comfort and performance, and Nike Dri-Fit technology. The club has also released a new away kit, which features a black away shirt that features a volt stripe that runs down the shoulders and sides. The shorts are also black, including a volt stripe that continues down the sides. These are the same as last season’s away shorts, adding further value. Black socks with a volt Nike swoosh complete the kit.

The club can also confirm that a special mini-kit will be available to purchase in the autumn for £33. This price will be inclusive of a full kit, comprising a shirt, shorts and socks, but it will not feature Nike branding. Meanwhile, the existing crimson third shirt will remain in place for the upcoming season, and is also available to purchase online at www.seagullsdirect.co.uk. Tickets for Albion’s upcoming home and away games can be bought online at seagullstickets.com.

The magical sculpture trail will feature around 46 giant Snowdogs, inspired by the much-loved animated short film, The Snowman™ and The Snowdog, based on the book by Raymond Briggs. Each Snowdog will be individually decorated by different artists and generously sponsored by local businesses. The giant Snowdogs will be joined by a pack of Snowdog puppy sculptures designed by local schoolchildren. Locations will include 11 the Big Beach Café at Hove Lagoon, Hove Museum and Hove Promenade. The trail is being organised by the Martlets Hospice in conjunction with Wild in Art, following in the footsteps of similar projects run by Wild in Art in other cities, such as Gromit Unleashed in Bristol. At the end of the event each Snowdog will be auctioned to raise funds for the hospice. Snowdogs by the Sea is expected to attract tens of thousands of visitors to Brighton and Hove in the autumn.

Imelda Glackin, Martlets Hospice CEO, said: “We have been overwhelmed by the support of local businesses, artists, community groups and schools who have all come together to enable us to create this unique trail. What is wonderful about this project is that, as well as being a brilliant, free event, which everyone can enjoy, it will also raise vital funds for Martlets so that we can support and care for more people who need hospice care.” Many artists have drawn inspiration for their designs from Brighton & Hove’s history, seafront location and iconic architecture. DJ Norman Cook has commissioned well known street artist Ryca to create his Snowdog at the Big Beach Café, whilst crime author Peter James is likely to have a police-themed Snowdog. The Snowdog outside Hove Museum is by local artist Sarah Arnett. Schoolchildren have been busy coming up with their own designs for their snow puppies, which will join the trail and be on show at Brighton Museum, Hove Museum and the Jubilee Library throughout the event. Organisers also hope to run a farewell event in December, bringing all the Snowdogs together for a final extravaganza. There will be a trail map on the website and an app to download. The map will also be available at outlets such as libraries across the city. For more information and to keep up to date with all details of the campaign, visit: www.snowdogsbythesea.co.uk or follow Snowdogs on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram at @SnowdogsBTS #Brightonsnowdogs

Meet a local resident with a fascinating job...

LOCAL PERSON DAVID FLACK David Flack lives in St Leonard’s Road and is a Shipboard Project Manager installing Submarine Telecoms Cables. What do you like about living in West Hove? I like that it’s quiet compared to central Brighton & Hove yet close enough to dip into the hustle and bustle. Transport links from here are excellent with major bus routes along New Church Road and Portslade Station nearby. There is a strong sense of community here and my neighbours are a friendly lot. Boundary Road has some useful shops too. Where is your favourite local place to relax?

13

I’m often to be found at The Railway Inn, The Garden Bar on Portland Road, Hove Beach Croquet Club, Hove Deep Sea Anglers Club or walking my dog along the beach or on the downs. Tell us about your job... I’ve worked in the submarine telecoms cable industry since 1985. I was a member of the submersible team that recovered the black boxes from the wreckage of Air India flight 182 when it was bombed over the Atlantic. Back then the oceans were crossed by co-axial cables that only carried telephone traffic. Optical fibre technology was introduced soon afterwards and now submarine cables, the arteries of the internet, provide vast amounts of bandwidth allowing video and data streaming from servers worldwide. After working on early ROVs (remotely operated underwater vehicles) I trained as a Cable Engineer, installing and repairing long-haul cable systems. Nowadays I oversee cable installation projects and often spend about half the year offshore. What’s the best place you’ve visited for work? I’ve been to lots of different places but when I worked on repair ships I was stationed in Bermuda where I dived

GUTTER PROBLEMS?

on many interesting shipwrecks. I was lucky to meet shipwreck hunter Teddy Tucker, the inspiration for Peter Benchley’s “The Deep”, who took me to some amazing wrecks that weren’t on the tourist map. I also spent time in Fiji where I started paddling Hawaiian outrigger canoes. I now own one here which we paddle off the beach in summer. What do you do when you’re not working? I try to catch up on the house maintenance and sometimes get involved in local issues. I go to a few festivals and during May I’m mostly in town for Brighton Festival and Fringe. I’ve been helping out at the Brighton Open Air Theatre (BOAT) in Dyke Road, the legacy of Adrian Bunting, a friend who died of cancer in 2013. I’m slowly restoring an old antique fairground hoopla stall which I hope to take to a few events in future.

Nathalie’s Monthly Health TIP...

SUPERFOODS OR MARKETING DREAM? To me, a superfood needs to have a few attributes. It should 1: taste good, 2: be healthy, 3: help me live a healthier longer life. So when I hear that a superfood has been ‘discovered’ – like for instance quinoa, my antennae tingle. Is it the great nutrients contained in this seed that are pushing its price to such heights that it’s become too expensive for its native South Americans to buy? Or is it just a marketing dream product? My vote would go for the latter. So let’s keep it simple: when you look at the diets of the people who live the longest and healthiest worldwide, you won’t find green smoothies, chlorella or even quinoa (for most). The number one food item on their plate: fat. Yes, vegetables (and some fruits) are important, but 15 overall, the most delicious, most filling, healthiest food is good fat from local grass-fed animals (meats with fat - not lean; eggs, butter, full-fat organic dairy; duck and goose fats etc). And don’t forget oily fish, seafood, coconut oil, ghee, olive oil and avocados. Fat gets my vote as a superfood: makes food delicious and healthy - and keeps you full and energised all day. Nathalie x PS: more eye-opening information on fats in next month’s edition of the West Hove Directory!

Here is our monthly gardening feature written by Nareesa Sulaiman, a local garden designer...

WEST HOVE

IN THE GARDEN... SEPTEMBER 2016 September can often be a dry and sunny month, helping us to forget that it is officially autumn. Perhaps, surprisingly, this is the month to plant spring bulbs. Here is a quick guide to some spring bulbs you may want to consider... Winter aconites (Eranthis) give rich yellow flowers in January and February when there is not a lot in bloom in the garden. These are good in rockeries, next to ponds or coming up through the lawn. Snowdrops (Galanthus) - amongst the earliest flowering spring bulbs; some can be seen as early as December but they tend to arrive en masse in January/Febru19 ary. My favourite is the traditional single snowdrop, Galanthus nivalis. Crocuses - Always popular, I think crocuses look great when they are either coming up through the lawn or planted in small groups throughout the bed. Choose three colours that look good together or be a purist and just go for one colour. Chionodoxas - beautiful star-shaped flowers in February and March, these look good in small clumps throughout the border.

Anemone blanda - are good value for money, multiplying each year and giving a long show of star-shaped flowers in March and April. The blue variety looks good amongst the daffodils. Daffodils and Narcissus - There are so many different groups of daffodils and I love them all. Some suppliers such as J Parker’s have good offers on bulbs at this time of year and, if you can’t make up your mind, they offer mixed packs! Tulips - wait until November/December for planting tulips; more about tulips next month. Camassias - are a late spring, early summer plant with tall spikes of blue or white star-shaped flowers opening from the bottom upwards. These look fantastic in meadow settings but are equally as good in clumps in the borders. Alliums - another late spring, early summer plant, there is now a wide range of alliums to choose from, some of which are very expensive. Allium hollandicum ‘Purple Sensation’ is a very popular choice but do be careful with these as they can set seed and sometimes take over. Other alliums that I particularly like are A. nigrum, A. neapolitanum cowanii group and A. ‘Gladiator’. Great places to visit Alfriston Clergy House, The Tye, Alfriston, Polegate, East Sussex, BN26 5TL. Celebrating 120 years of being in National Trust ownership, this beautiful cottage garden is set in the heart of the Sussex countryside. www.nationaltrust.org.uk Happy gardening! Nareesa

An update on a great local community group...

WEST HOVE

STONEHAM BAKEHOUSE Stoneham Bakehouse has continued to grow over the last few months, with more places to buy our bread, and a series of successful workshops for those who want to learn how to bake their own loaves. We have also been lucky to receive funding for a number of projects, and some of these will be starting in the autumn. We’ve run a series of workshops on making rye breads, olive oil breads and general breadmaking skills. We’ve drawn up a menu of workshops for the autumn months which will include a sourdough bread workshop on 26 September, as well as workshops on how to make bagels (14th November) and festive breads (12th December), so 21 there’s a chance to learn some baking skills. Finally, as Stoneham Bakehouse gets bigger, with more of the community wanting to be involved, we’re looking to expand. Our current ‘itinerant bakers’ status, baking in my home, Pizzaface and The Hive, has been a great way to get started, but as we look to the future we need our own space. Somewhere where we can bring a bread oven to the heart of our community. We’ve been keeping our eyes open and ears to the ground, but so far we haven’t found the right thing. So, we’re looking for a helping hand from our community. Do

you know of a space you can see us pop up in? Have you a link to someone who works in commercial property? We’d love to hear from you with your ideas. Let’s get Stoneham Bakehouse into the community and sharing the process of baking with everyone. info@stonehambakehouse.org.uk /@stonehambake facebook.com/stonehambakehouse / 07786 927110.

You can also buy bread for your own table in the following ways: • Order bread during the week and collect it from The Hive on Friday afternoons and alternate Saturday lunchtimes. • Buy bread at the Hove Farmers’ Market on the third Saturday of each month from 10-2pm. If you’re interested in buying bread from us then we have an order form in the Hive, or you can email orders to us on: orders@stonehambakehouse.org.uk or phone/ text 07786 927110. To see when we’re baking, and what you can order, you can visit our Buy Bread page. We’re also still trialling an online order form.

Concerned about your home being sold to fund your future care fees? The Issue

You probably own your home as joint tenants if you are a couple and solely if you are single. For couples this means you own it wholly, jointly and severally. Ultimately therefore you do not own it 50:50 as you might have assumed. You actually own all of it together and when one partner dies the surviving partner owns it solely and absolutely. It is sole and absolute ownership that enables a whole property to be taken into consideration as an asset by the local authority and puts the property in danger of needing to be sold to fund care.

The Reality Today

The care Act 2014 introduced in April 2015 allows local authorities to assess your assets to determine if you need to pay for your own care under the new charges and assessment of resources regulations. Currently if you have assets above £23,250, you are on your own and require care, you will probably have to pay for it all currently averaging around £1,000 per week. Savings, cash and income would be used first and then your property would need to be taken into consideration. You would be expected to pay for all of your care until such time as your assets were depleted to below the £23,250 threshold. You would then pay for a proportion of your care until your assets were below £14,250 - at which point all your future care would be paid for after any relevant income was taken into account.

The Solution

For couples, simply by changing the way you own your property well in advance of any care considerations i.e. from joint tenants to tenants in common and by setting up two property Trusts either immediately or within a properly structured Will at the same time in most cases, protect the integrity of your home should you ever require care in the future, so long as avoiding care fees was not a primary motivating reason behind the implementation of the strategy - i.e. you should be looking to protect your half of your property should your spouse remarry after your death, or you should be looking to ensure that your children would not lose 50% of their inheritance should they be made bankrupt or divorce or for example you should be looking to prevent a generational inheritance tax burden in the future. These are all sound reasons for implementing this strategy which in themselves are not deliberate deprivation of assets, but the implementation of which protects the integrity of the property. For sole owners the process is simply to set up a Trust now and convey your property into it which will produce the same result and again this must be well in advance of any care considerations and the motivation must not solely be for the purpose of preventing your home being used to fund your care.

The Reasoning

When you own your home as tenants in common you actually own half each. With our Post Death Property Protection Package when the first partner dies, they leave their half into their Trust. The surviving partner is the Trustee of that Trust and also the Primary Beneficiary which means that as they own half and are Trustee of the other half they have complete control over the property and what happens to it. The children and/or whoever else is also nominated as ultimate Trust Beneficiaries will have access to that half of the property when the surviving partner dies. The first half of the property then is 100% securely in Trust for the beneficiaries and will not be at risk. As a result of this simple strategy and because it is not possible to sell just the survivor’s half of the property, the integrity of the property is protected. While the ‘’market value” of half a property is negligible, The Care Act 2014 guidelines do allow for this half to have a charge placed on it under a deferred payment arrangement for care fees which is why this package includes a Lasting Power of Attorney grant for Property and Financial affairs which will enable a preappointed Attorney to act on behalf of the survivor should they be unable to themselves and negotiate with the Local Authority for the property to be rented out and a percentage of the income given to the Local Authority instead of a charge being placed. The second half of the property would then ultimately go into the Trust for access by the nominated beneficiaries when the surviving partner eventually dies. With our Whole of Life and Post Death Complete Property and Family Protection Package both halves of the property are conveyed into Trust IMMEDIATELY. This means the whole property is protected straight away and not just after the first party dies. The benefits of this package are that it then protects the property even if both parties go into care before the death of either. It also means that if the survivor goes into care the property does not have to be rented out but if it is, 100% of the income goes directly into the Trusts for the benefit of the survivor or any of the other Trust Beneficiaries and does not have to be given to the Local Authority. The most important benefit of this package though is the property can be sold at any time and the resulting proceeds be fully protected for the whole family within the Trusts and no negotiation with the Local Authority is required. Sole owners and couples who have immediately conveyed their properties into Trust well in advance of any care consideration and not solely for the purpose of preventing their home being used to fund their care (deliberate deprivation of assets) secures the integrity of the property (so long as entry into care is not within 6 months of setting up the strategy) as the property is not absolutely owned by an individual anymore and it is not legal to force a Trustee to do something that is not in the ultimate best interest of the Trust Beneficiaries. Call us now on 01273 911142 for a friendly chat about which package would be of best benefit to you and your family.

This family-friendly display at Hove Museum explores how members of one profession, artists, see others at work; the works on show date from the 17th to the 20th centuries and all come from the city’s Fine Art Collection. The painting shown here is by Ronald Horton (19021981) who from 1944 to 1966 headed the highly successful Art Teacher Training Department at Brighton College of Art, which attracted students from all over the world. The painting features Dick Pennifold, who was imprisoned as a conscientious objector during the First World War, and was President of the Brighton Trades and Labour Council. Among other artworks featured in the display are The Ballet Shoe (c1932) by impressionist painter Dame Laura Knight, and a painting of fishermen c1980 by Laetitia Yhap, a Hastings-based artist.

Here’s a great new event coming to Hove Lawns...

BRIGHTON AND HOVE TRIATHLON 11TH SEPTEMBER The inaugural Brighton & Hove Triathlon takes place on Sunday 11th September on Hove Lawns. It will be the biggest closed road triathlon on the south coast. Brighton and Hove seafront will provide the iconic backdrop, and the event has been organised by the London 2012 Olympic Competition Manager and serial triathlon organiser, John Lunt. Professional triathletes and first-timers alike will commence their race with an open water sea-swim from the beach, before a flat cycle leg held entirely on closed roads takes them along the coast, followed by a 37 return to Hove Lawns and a run that will head out towards the West Pier and the i360 before crossing the finish line. There are three race distances available, including the standard “Olympic” distance, as raced by the Brownlee brothers - 1500m swim followed by a 40km cycle and ending with a 10km run; the Sprint - swim 750m / bike 20km / run 5km; and the smallest distance, the Super Sprint - 400m swim, 5km cycle and 2.5km run.
