A NEW TYPE OF DINER
We offer incredible new versions of food and drink that you might find familiar. We have sodas made in house with some help from our centrifuge machine. They have around one tenth of the sugar of regular sodas. Our cocktails are crafted with loving care using house made essences, bitters and artisanal spirits. Some of our cakes have no added sugar. Some are completely dairy free. We are really proud of our velvety, house made, organic cashew and tiger nut milk blend.
Our coffee has to be tasted to be believed. We only use the best butter, virgin coconut oil (for our many non dairy/vegan creations) and extra virgin olive oil for dressing. Our tea is brewed in clean glass, to the perfect temperature.
Everything we have is completely free of gluten. That's right, everything. Even our house made sourdough, sweet bakes and our buttermilk pancakes. Our aim is excellence as standard. We make super food for super people.

LagoonFest is back!
LAGOONFEST
7 SEPTEMBER 2019, 11AM-4PM AT HOVE LAGOON I cannot believe it is that time of year again, but yes, LagoonFest is almost here. Last year’s inaugural event was very successful and attracted thousands of visitors, who purchased food and drink, played Tombola, bought raffle tickets, watched skate jams, had their faces painted (that was just the adults), fell off paddle boards, saw a strange man on stilts feed sausages to dogs, learned about model yachts, bought a variety of goods from stalls, watched the artist Cassette Lord at work and danced to Jivin Jim Dandy, local bands and the5 sounds of a man named Fatboy Slim. This year there will be more stalls and a greater variety of activities for children and adults. Newcomers are the Purple Turtle Therapy Tent, Coastway Vets Dog Show, 3D and Sand Art and many more.
All profits will contribute to match funding for our planting scheme.
Our main sponsors this year are The Cheese Hut, Empire Construction, Shoreham Port Authority and Vero Screening, and donations from Big Beach Café, Lagoon Pirates and Lagoon Watersports.

News from the council...
COUNCIL BEGINS REMOVING WEED GROWTH... The council has begun an extensive weed removal programme after pledging to become a pesticide-free city. A team of eight will join existing staff who are already touring the city to remove weeds by hand and with tools as the council reduces the use of toxic herbicide glyphosate and explores new weed control technology. The council has been aware of the amount of weeds in the city, but has waited until the growth has developed before taking steps. The team has already cleared9the Bristol Estate of weeds as well as deep cleaning the pavements, and has moved onto other areas in the city. A major step forward to becoming pesticide-free Cllr Anne Pissaridou, chair of the council’s Environment, Transport and Sustainability (ETS) committee, said: “Stopping the use of glyphosate is a major step forward in making sure the city, its residents, wildlife and environment are all pesticide-free. It will always be the case that stopping the use of pesticides will mean more weeds, but this new team will control growth in the short-term while we investigate the use of new technologies including hot foam and infra-red technology.” Council taking expert advice The council is working closely with the Brighton-based Pesticide Action Network, experts in how to become pesticide-free. A plan is being developed to end the use of the toxic weed killer in all the city’s parks, open spaces, pavements, verges and housing land within three years. Cllr Pissaridou added: “We have already started to reduce the amounts of glyphosate used in city parks, housing land and public highways. However, we believe we can accelerate the reduction in use.”
The harmful effects of glyphosate Glyphosate, commonly known by its original trade name Roundup, is a toxic herbicide and the world’s most widely sold weed killer. But many experts, including Pesticide Action Network and the Soil Association, believe it causes cancer in humans while destroying the environment and wildlife. A report will go to the next ETS committee in October. In the meantime no glyphosate will be used in the city’s parks while the impact is monitored and alternative solutions are trialled. Residents who would like excessive weeds removed from public land can contact Cityclean on 01273 292929 or email cityclean@brighton-hove.gov.uk.

Local history from Rachel Bridgeman...
THE STREETS OF HOVE NOT PAVED WITH GOLD... Standing on the junction of Sackville Road and Hove Street, breathing in the car fumes and listening to the sound of traffic, it is hard to imagine that this thoroughfare started off as a track for driving cattle along (called Hove Drove), connecting the ancient village of Hove to the Downs. This road has borne witness to many events over the centuries – caravans of smugglers’ horses laden with contraband heading for their hideouts; militia men and clip-clopping cavalry horses preparing to defend these shores from Napoleonic invasion; fleets of ambulances during the Great War bringing wounded soldiers to one of the three military hospitals in West Hove and Poets’ Corner; renowned poets out for a stroll; Hollywood stars; and future kings of England wandering down to the beach, towel under arm, for a swim.

11
Even the last century has seen a huge change - a traffic census in August 1911 recorded a total of 1,529 vehicles (634 horse-drawn vehicles, 70 motor cars, 215 handbarrows and 600 bicycles, as well as 4,570 pedestrians).

The Victorian and Edwardian eras were those of horsedrawn traffic and that was reflected in the road surfaces used - the streets of Hove were paved with a variety of materials over the years: granite macadam, quartzite stone; flint and wood. Wood was a popular option, as stone caused a terrible din from iron horseshoes and carriage wheels. On the downside, it absorbed the horse manure and urine and, on hot days, the stench could be noxious. George Street, Church Road and Western Road were all paved with wood at one time or other. Macadam roads also tended to be insanitary for the same reasons, causing contaminated mud and windblown dust. In dry weather, watercarts made regular rounds through the streets of Hove spraying water to lay the dust, filling up with water from water standpipes. To learn more about the history of Hove, join a guided historical walking tour led by a local historian and tour guide. Hove Actually Walking Tours are fun, informative, informal and best suited to the incurably curious. This article is by Camrass Wills…
BLOODLINE WILLS AND CARE HOME FEES... Can you avoid your house being sold to pay for care home fees? The answer in some cases is yes but unfortunately it is sometimes no. If you are a couple (married or not) you can do a lot with your wills to help with this. There are also some big mistakes that you need to avoid. 1. Deliberate deprivation of assets. If you have intentionally decreased your assets in order to reduce the amount you are charged towards care fees and the local authority can show that you knew you were going to need care when you did this, it can overturn your actions. This doesn’t mean you should give away your house to your children13 just in case you might need care. 2. Lifetime gifts to children. In theory you can give everything to your children before you die or go into care but there are some real risks. If your children own part or all of your house and they happen to die before you, unless their will leaves the house to you, you may have to sell! Similarly if a married child gets divorced, the house will be part of their assets for the divorce settlement and again, you might have to sell.

3. Lifetime gifts to a trust. This can be a good solution but only in a few situations and not usually appropriate for your home. 4. Solutions for couples. The best solution for a couple who own their own home is to make sure they have the right sort of wills and own the house in the right way. There are two options: 1. Beneficial joint tenants (owners). 2. Tenants (owners) in common. 5. Beneficial joint tenants. This is the default option and is good for younger home owners because if one of them happens to die, the house automatically reverts to the other. For older couples tenants in common is better. 6. Tenants in common. This way you each own half of the house. On death, with the right will, one half can go into a trust which means it cannot be used to pay for care if the survivor requires it. With the right trust, the survivor can still live in the house (and downsize if required) but the half in the trust is protected and can pass on to the children on second death. This also protects against the surviving spouse remarrying and the house going to the new spouse. 7. How can Camrass Wills help? We can advise you what is best for your situation and make sure it is correctly documented. We can tell you how you own your home – the Land Registry documents do not use either of the phrases, beneficial joint tenants or tenants in common! Local news from Wish ward councillor Robert Nemeth...
COUNCILLOR NEWS... Cllr Garry Peltzer Dunn and I have a whole series of seafront issues to report on this month. The first relates to the Edburton concrete-crushing facility in Shoreham Port at the foot of St Leonard’s Road which pumps out dust onto nearby homes and vehicles. After a friendly approach didn’t work, we drew up a petition calling on the Port Authority to take action. The response was swift and a planning application for the site is now in for six two-storey commercial units by ECE Architecture. Edburton is to be relocated to a more appropriate secluded site in the south-west corner of the port so it’s a win-winwin. For the plan to work though, the planning application needs to go through so we are urging residents to add supportive comments – see BH2019/01502 Ferry Wharf on the council site. On the subject of St Leonard’s Road, congratulations to Dan Boorman and fellow residents who have been successful in their ‘Playing Out’ application for monthly road closures to allow kids to play in the street without traffic. The first is on Sunday 1st September at 12-3pm. Going slightly east, we continue to be frustrated by the Council’s catalogue of failures relating to the Wharf Road bank north of the Lagoon. Around £40,000 spent on a project without consultation with residents and Councillors. Gardeners now inform us that not enough plants have gone in and there is nothing set aside for maintenance (a criticism of the Council rather than the contractor). The worry is that it will soon be over-run by weeds. Across the road at the Lagoon, there have been tens of dogs injured after spiky grass seeds have become lodged in their skin (usually in feet) following the grass not being cut by the Council – a measure to promote biodiversity rather than to cut costs. We don’t believe that allowing these particular varieties of tough grasses to flourish is actually biodiverse so have requested expert advice. We
hope to persuade the Administration to resume a proper cutting schedule – not least so that it is cut properly before Lagoonfest on Saturday 7th September. Finally, it’ll be no surprise that the Administration has allowed the King Alfred deal to fall apart after years of delay and millions of pounds being lost. We think that a new scheme should just be about sports and leisure – if there has to be housing then its purpose should be to pay for the community facility. Cllr Robert Nemeth, Wish Ward The West Hove Directory is happy to publish views on local issues. This doesn’t mean it either agrees or disagrees with subjects covered. If you want to express a different viewpoint, please email us at info@ westhovedirectory.co.uk. We hope to bring you news from the Westbourne ward councillors next month.

NETBALL CLUB IN HOVE IS LOOKING FOR NEW RECRUITS...
Thousands of women across the UK are discovering a great way to get fit which is fun, friendly and you probably last played at school – netball. With England hosting and doing so well in the recent Netball World Cup it is more popular than ever. UK figures reveal it’s one of the fastest growing participation sports for women with more than 156,000 women of all ages, from 25 – 60 years, playing every week across

the country. It’s also a great alternative to working out in the gym or jogging. We’re a netball club in Hove originally set up in 2013 by a small group of friends who wanted to try out the traditional school sport again. The group has grown through word of mouth and online marketing, but we are still looking for more players. Players say it has become ‘the highlight of my week’ and ‘brilliant fun’. Fast-paced and great exercise, netball remains a really good game to play. Although we’re mainly meeting for fun, the competitive element means you push yourself a little bit more. And when you’re concentrating on getting the ball, you forget you’re actually doing exercise. Netball can burn up to 600 calories a session with its fast, explosive sprints and longer jogs, improves upper body strength and flexibility with its quick changes of direction, plus helps hand-to-eye co-ordination. We have two fantastic coaches/umpires who take turns to teach us. Each session we meet and do gentle warm-ups and stretches followed by some ball skill and tactic training. We then play a friendly game with players choosing what position to play and with regular breaks to swap position and have a breather. We’re open to all and operate a drop-in policy. Just turn up and play, £8 per person. We play on Wednesday evenings from 7.30 – 8.30pm on the indoor netball courts at King Alfred Leisure Centre, Kingsway, Hove. The first session back after the summer is 11th September. Please do come and join us. If you’d like to know more email Helen at helenholt45 @gmail.com or contact Helen on 07789 912360. WEST HOVE
Nathalie’s monthly health tip…
THE BIG BLOAT… (PART DEUX) In last month’s article, I listed some of the most common causes of bloating I encounter daily in my work. Keeping in mind that there might be other triggers for your bloat (and do check with your GP if it persists), here are some practical guidelines to help you achieve a flatter, healthier belly: Is your bloat likely due to: Slow digestion/constipation/gas? • Sip plenty of water daily, slowly, but away from food. • Daily fibre: in raw leafy vegetables and fruit, wholegrain, pulses. • Lubricate with good fats: avocado, coconut, ghee, 29 quality butter, unheated oils. • Increase magnesium-rich foods: leafy greens, pulses, nuts, seeds, wholegrain, seaweeds, sea-salt. Bacterial imbalance/candida? • Eat probiotic foods: lacto-fermented vegetables (with caution if yeast is a problem), full-fat organic live yogurt, miso, kombucha etc. • Avoid sugar, alcohol: unfriendly to good bacteria Bloat after certain foods? • Eliminate gluten, dairy and/or sugar strictly for 6-8
weeks, then re-introduce gradually and monitor how each food feels. • Avoid ‘gums’, pectins, starches added to gluten-free foods. For all bloat sufferers: these tips might make ALL the difference: • Eat mindfully: slow down your meals to last 20 minutes and chew 30 times. • Keep a food diary. • Belly breathe: practise deep belly breathing before and while you eat to hugely enhance your digestive ability and provide oxygen to the vital bacteria. An event coming to Bishop Hannington Church...
A local group...
THE COBWEB ORCHESTRA VISITS HOVE!
HATCHERY WRITERS RETURN TO HOVE LIBRARY!
The Cobweb Orchestra is an open-access, multi-award-winning orchestra based in the North of England where it comprises a regional network of local community groups meeting weekly, and a programme of weekend events open to all.
33
On Saturday 5th October a contingent of the orchestra will be coming to Bishop Hannington Church for a study day on Mahler Symphony No 1. Andy Jackson, Artistic Director of the orchestra, will use his musical understanding, versatility and vision to guide the orchestra through this wonderful work. If you play an orchestral instrument, you are warmly invited to come and join in with the friendly and supportive group of players who will look forward to meeting and playing with you. Music will be provided. The workshops will run from 10.00am – 12.30pm and 1.30pm to 4.30pm, with a shared lunch in the Church Lounge. Informal performance at 5.30pm (estimated finish time 7.00pm).
Hatchery Writers have returned to Hove Library where they now hold their monthly group meetings on the second Saturday of the month, 11am to 1pm. Hatchery Writers is a friendly and supportive group. We welcome writers of all levels as well as non-writers who are interested in literary matters. Our meetings are lively literary and social events. They provide opportunities to hear authors talk about their novels, to participate in workshops on aspects of writing and to share writing. Entry fee per meeting: £3 non-members; £2 members. Annual subscription: £2. We also have a subgroup – the Scribblers – who meet on a regular basis to share and critique one another’s work. For information about Hatchery Writers email: hatchery.writers@gmail.com For information about the Scribblers contact: scribblers.hove@gmail.com Join us on Facebook: https://www.facebook. com/groups/418002109039542/

A great achievement by Amber Anning...
An annual sporting event...
EUROPEAN UNDER-20 MEDALS FOR AMBER ANNING
SCOOTATHLON ACCOMPANIES BRIGHTON & HOVE TRIATHLON
18-year-old West Hove athlete Amber Anning represented Great Britain at the European under-20 Championships in Boras, Sweden, in July and returned with a gold and silver medal.
35
This September will be the fourth year for the Brighton & Hove Triathlon on Hove Lawns.
She won silver in the individual 400m, where she ran the fastest time by a British under-20 woman for 37 years, and the gold as she anchored the GB 4x400m relay team home. Earlier this year she won a silver medal for Great Britain in the 400m relay at the European Indoor Athletics Championships in Glasgow, her first senior competition. Amber attended Hove Junior School and has just completed her A-levels at BHASVIC. She will be starting university in America this month, studying at LSU (Louisiana State University) for the next four years. LSU is a powerhouse of track and field in the collegiate system and her goal is to make the GB Olympic team next year.
The event has grown annually since its inception in 2016 and now boasts over 1400 entries due to its beautiful location, the ability to do a sea swim, traffic-free roads for the bike section, and a weekend of family-focused races. Children aged from three to eight years are able to compete over the weekend in the Scootathlon – scoot, bike and run - thanks to Race Director John Lunt who is passionate about getting young people active. He said: “Last year we had 140 children aged between 3-8 years of age racing along Hove seafront and the atmosphere was fantastic.” This year’s Scootathlon will take place on Saturday 14th September at noon. The Children’s Triathlon (8-15) and Adult Triathlon will take place on Sunday 15th September. For more information, visit www. brightonandhovetriathlon.com

WEST HOVE
A local update…
FRIENDS OF STONEHAM PARK Litter is an issue we ought to tackle in our parks and open spaces. The outcry over plastic straws in the wake of Blue Planet II misses the point that it is how we dispose of our litter that counts, not necessarily what litter we make in the first place. When the seafront is busy - as inevitably it was in the very warm weather in the summer the inland parks get left behind and bins emptied less often. This is a real problem and we will try to look at ways of reducing it. If you feel strongly on this, or other issues, why not come to our next meeting in the George Payne on Tuesday 3 September at 7.30pm? You’d be most welcome.
An all-too-familiar sight

Richard Hearnden Free PSA tests organised by Brighton Lions at Bishop Hannington Church...
FREE PSA TESTING FOR PROSTATE PROBLEMS The PSA test is a blood test that measures the amount of prostate specific antigen (PSA) in your blood.
NOW TAKING BOOKINGS FOR 2020 TOURS
PSA is a protein produced by normal cells in the prostate and also by prostate cancer cells. It’s normal to have a small amount of PSA in your blood, and the amount rises as you get older and your prostate gets bigger. A raised PSA level may suggest you have a problem with your prostate, but not necessarily cancer. Brighton Lions, in conjunction with the Prostate Cancer Support Organisation, hold PSA testing sessions from time to time. The test involves taking a blood sample which is sent to a hospital laboratory for analysis. The result will be sent to you by post or email within two weeks or so. Only trained nurses will perform the tests, which are free of charge to men aged between 45 and 80. Our next testing day will be Saturday, 28th September 2019 at Bishop Hannington Church, Nevill Avenue, Hove. Book an appointment online at www.psatesting.org/events/hove or, if you cannot book online, call 0845 650 2555.
