It’s nearly that time of the year again...West Hove Artists Open House trai

THE WEST HOVE ARTISTS’ OPE The West Hove Artists’ Open House Trail is back this year with seventeen houses offering an exciting array of sculpture, paintings, ceramics, jewellery, workshops and more. Alongside the illustrious Brighton Festival and Fringe, which attract throngs of people from around the world to the city each May, the Artists’ Houses consists of several trails running throughout Brighton and Hove every weekend from 30th April to 30th May. The Open Houses’ inclusive ethos means there is something for every type of art and culture lover, with work from a wide variety of artistic disciplines. Novice or professional, May is an opportunity to celebrate the whole spectrum of visual beauty. Judy Stevens, the festival director, said: “It is very important to us to give opportunities to marginalised artists, those facing barriers to the art world for any reason, including economically and geographically as well as those with physical and learning disabilities.” The West Hove trail has grown in popularity since it launched five years ago - a relative newcomer to the Artists’ Open Houses, which began in 2011.

EN HOUSE TRAIL In 2014 the Open House Award went to a West Hove house - Peanut Butter Tree Arts at 3 Lawrence Road. The 2013 winner ‘Encounters’ at 12 Langdale Road was also awarded the VisitBrighton Visitors’ Choice Award in 2014. Last year ‘Encounters’ also won second place and housed talented artists from three continents. Villa LVI on 56 Payne Avenue was shortlisted for the award in 2015 and this year will be creating and showcasing a range of floral art, a unique and beautiful practice that hasn’t been seen much before along the trail. Breezier No. 46 will house a series of workshops where visitors can participate in and develop their 5 own artistic skills. Here you will also find works from silversmiths, painters, illustrators, and more.

Coral Beach, Connemara, by Karen Potter

This year there are more opportunities to get involved in artists’ workshops than ever before, with Lawrence Art Studio in West Hove doing demonstrations on a variety of techniques, including oil paintings, watercolours, wood engraving, paper making, bookbinding, acrylics and pastels.

We are proud of the impact the West Hove Trail continues to have on the Open House festival and the fantastic collaboration that takes place within our neighbourhood during this time. But don’t just take our word for it, get out and celebrate with your fellow West Hove dwellers.

MAJORITY BACK MOVING HOV A majority responding to a survey were in favour of merging Hove’s library with its museum as a way to save community libraries. Cuts in Government funding have led to the council proposing a reorganisation of services. Since November the authority has been consulting residents about the proposed changes, enshrined in a four-year plan. The Economic Development and Culture Committee approved the plan on 11th March and the final decision was due to be taken at a meeting of the full council on 24th March, after we went to print. The council says that crucial to saving all of the city’s 12 neighbourhood libraries is finding cost reductions of £350,000 a year from running Hove Library. The 1908 building costs £500,000 a year to run and needs £750,000 of repairs in the next five years. The plan proposes merging it with Hove Museum 300 metres west along New Church Road. A new cultural centre for Hove would be created by building an extension doubling space on the ground floor. Consultation forms revealed 57% of respondents tended to agree or strongly agree the Hove moves, 38% tended

But keeping it in that building will leave us no choice but to consider shutting other libraries to pay for it. So we must put services before buildings and provide the best citywide facilities with the money we have. This is a great opportunity to work with residents and library

WEST HOVE

SECRET GARDEN GROUP NEWS AND EVENTS The Secret Garden Group runs the Secret Garden situated behind St Leonard’s Church. Our continuing aim is to create a wonderful space the whole community can enjoy. We have free workdays on Wednesdays and Saturdays, 11am until 2pm, however the garden is open for all to enjoy any day of the week. On workdays you can come along with a pair of gardening gloves and join us growing organic vegetables, a variety of flowers and trying to create a wild woodland area with a mix of shrubs and fruit trees. We aim to make it a child-friendly space where wildlife can thrive. We have our own bee hives, safely contained in the new trellised apiary and run by our beekeeper Chris Hogarth, who is happy to talk about the bees and will sometimes suit you up in protective cloth11 ing for a closer look. She sells their delicious unprocessed honey in the summer months – it always sells out quickly! We also have a wildlife pond – no goldfish – but many tadpoles, frogs, solitary bees, dragonflies and butterflies are attracted to it. The Secret Garden hosts events throughout the year such as ‘Big Digs’, ‘Trick or Treat’ (with home grown and made pumpkin soup) and a Christmas Celebration. The next event to come up will be sowing wildflowers – this is in association with Grow Wild which sends out free seeds to community groups. In June we are planning a

The Secret Garden Group has been very fortunate to have been donated many items. We have also been awarded funding from various sources including the West Hove Forum and the Sussex Community Foundation and this has enabled us to erect a fine potting shed to which we have attached guttering and four water butts in order to save water ready for the dryer months. FOCUS, LOOK, LISTEN The road safety mantra for crossing the roads has been “Stop, Look, Listen” – from when we were in primary school. Failure to look properly is the biggest cause of collisions in the city – for all road users. Modern life gives us many distractions – mobile phones/devices and headphones. We are often caught up in our thoughts when using the roads. Taking time to be aware of how we are feeling before we get on the roads can help us focus on the roads when we are using them. Roads remain probably the riskiest environment we use each day – walking/ cycling/driving or riding. The new “Focus, Look, Listen” Share the Roads, Brighton & Hove reminds all road users in the city that a clear campaign focus on the roads allows you to look and listen effectively, able to make the best decisions.

Volunteers are needed to help with a wide variety of roles and you can register to volunteer at: http://www.brightonmarathon.co.uk/volunteer. The deadline to sign up is 10th April. Road closures will include New Church Road and part of Boundary Road (9am to 3pm), part of Kingsway (7am to 3pm) and Basin Road South (9am to 4pm). This year’s official race starter on behalf of the Motor Neurone Disease Association is TV presenter Zoe Ball, a resident of Western Esplanade. She will be at the Mass Start in Preston Park at 9.15am, with the elite runners 13 starting in Withdean Park. Both the men’s and women’s champions from 2015 are returning to the race this year, Duncan Maiyo of Kenya and his compatriot Penninah Wanjiru. The first elite runners should reach Boundary Road at approximately 10.35am and Shoreham Harbour around 10.55am. If you want to see the end of the race, the first runners are expected to finish in Madeira Drive at around 11.25 and you can cheer them on from a grandstand situated directly by the finish line, which will be filled on a first come, first served basis. WEST HOVE

IN THE GARDEN... APRIL 2016 Now that the weather is starting to warm up, there’s lots to do in the garden... Prune shrubs that have just finished flowering such as Forsythia and winter-flowering Viburnums. Using clean, sharp secateurs or loppers, cut back to create a pleasing shape. On well-established shrubs, you can cut back every fifth branch to the base of the shrub, to encourage new shoots to grow. Spring clean the plant beds by lightly weeding using a hand fork and then add fertiliser to the soil, following the instructions regarding coverage. Trees and shrubs don’t usually need fertiliser but roses love a good feed and, if you don’t mind using chemicals, this15 is the perfect time to spray roses with a fungicide to prevent blackspot. Insert plant supports now where they will be needed so that you don’t need to trample through the beds later in the season. Hopefully your lawn has had time to recover from the winter rain and you should be able to give the lawn its first cut, if you haven’t already. Set the blades on their highest setting for the first cut, if you have a choice of settings, and then gradually lower each time you mow.

Feed the lawn with lawn feed after mowing to help strengthen growth, but take care not to overfeed. This is a good month to plant summer-flowering bulbs such as lilies, gladioli and dahlias; my neighbour had such a good show of dahlias last year that she kept half the street supplied with cut flowers! Generally, summerflowering bulbs like sunny beds with well-drained soil. If your soil is quite heavy, add grit to the bottom of the planting hole to help with drainage. Allium neapolitanum Cowanii Group Earlier than other Alliums, this ornamental onion has a head of pretty white flowers that bees love and that look good as a cut flower in a small vase. Relatively inexpensive and quite easy to get hold of despite the name, these look good planted en masse. Height 40cm. Great places to visit Arundel Castle has a tulip festival throughout April and May with over 32,000 tulips to admire; www.arundelcastle.org, admission to gardens £9, more if you want to visit the castle as well. Happy gardening! Nareesa 07946 527280 www.leafgardendesigns.co.uk

The need for change has been triggered by rising demand for secondary school places, and also by the University of Brighton’s proposal to create a new secondary free school in the eastern central area of the city. As of September 2018 the projected rise in the number of secondary age pupils means that in some catchment areas there will be too many pupils for the places available. 19 The proposals being considered relate to community secondary schools and academies, but not to faith schools. Interested parties are invited to give their views on three different catchment area proposals: Model A: each school to have its own catchment area Model B: the city to have four catchment areas, three with two schools in and one with three schools in Model C: each secondary school being part of a catchment area with three schools in. Under Model A, residents of

West Hove living to the west of Saxon Road would have the Portslade Aldridge Community Academy (PACA) as their catchment school. West Hove residents living to the east of Saxon Road would be in the catchment area for Hove Park School. Model B would give West Hove residents a choice between these two schools. Model C would see Blatchington Mill also included as part of a wider threeschool catchment area. Key - Average of the percentage of pupils in each catchment area receiving Free Residents’ views are sought on whether to keep random allocation within catchment areas as the “tie-breaker” for oversubscribed schools, or to use home to school distance instead. Councillors are also looking to see 525000E they can make 527500E 530000E 5 whether more schools more accessible to children from disadvantaged backgrounds. The chair of the cross party working group is Cllr Daniel Chapman. He said: “The boundary lines indicated are suggestions at this stage. The feedback we get from this engagement exercise will help us draw up concrete proposals that will be the subject of a formal consultation process in the autumn.” Wish ward councillor Robert Nemeth said: “My ward colleague Cllr Garry Peltzer Dunn and I have alerted as many residents as we can about this worrying proposal and have written to the Administration for the date of a Hove consultation meeting. We feel that Options B and C would be far better for West Hove than A.” You can find out more and give your views via the council website at: https://www.brighton-hove.gov.uk/2018-admissions. There is just as much to be gained from shorter off-road runs and races. They are a hell of a lot cheaper, don’t require reams of time to train for, are not crowded and are just as much fun - if not more so - as they don’t last for hours and hours and hours. Ok, so the only spectators are likely to be a few uninterested cows and

sheep, but that can be much more relaxing and pleasant than the cacophony of a big city race. This is where WSFRL comes in. West Sussex Fun Run League races take place all over the county and are run by local running clubs. All are between 5km and 10km and cost £3 (£7 unaffiliated). Most events have an accompanying junior race of no more than one mile which cost £1. The emphasis is on the fun in all the races! I have run several on various parts of the Downs as well as riverside and road runs. Those new to running will find them a brilliant introduction as they are short enough to complete even if you need to walk a bit, they are really cheap at £7/£3 and cater for everyone. I’m sure I’ve gone on enough about how inclusive and brilliant running is but I shall continue now! Please don’t be afraid to come along and give one of these runs a go. Yes, you may be surrounded by people in a variety of running club vests but you will also see plenty of unattached runners (by which I mean those not affiliated to a running club). Running is such a good thing to do both for your physical and mental health. I credit it in a large part for helping me get to grips with the depression/anxiety that has plagued me for my whole life. The actual act of running combined with the friendships you will make with likeminded people is better than any prescribed medication in making you feel better so I implore you to get out there! Even those who already feel full of the joys of spring or are seasoned runners will get something good out of participating in one of these runs. Search WSFRL or Sussex Races for the full range of races in the county. Go! For more details about my life in exercise please visit my blog “IMFitHove”. Thanks. Happy exercising! isobelmuir@hotmail.com WHD April 2016

Hello, I’m Belinda and I teach Musical Bumps classes in Brighton and Hove.

WEST HOVE

MUSICAL BUMPS We offer top quality, friendly music classes to share with babies, toddlers and pre-school children. We use traditional songs and rhymes, musical games and percussion from around the world. Our repertoire is chosen to enable children to learn. The songs and games we use all have a purpose. We like to keep up to date - thus ensuring that Musical Bumps fully supports the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum. We know that children learn best through play - our classes are playful and engaging. We have enough percussion and puppets for everyone to use, as well as colourful resources. We believe that music education for the very young is so 29 important to a child’s wellbeing and development. Music benefits all areas of learning. For example, it can support speech and language, social skills, fine and gross motor development, increased confidence, musical skills and much more, all of which is pivotal to a child’s happiness, growth and learning.

Our classes provide the perfect opportunity for you and your child to share time making music and singing, whilst having fun. Refreshments are provided too, giving everyone a chance to get to know each other. Come along and see for yourself, book a FREE TASTER SESSION and join the class in action. • Babies (from newborn) • 1 – 2 years • 2 – 3 years • mixed age classes. Here we feature a locally based art group...

TAKE UP PAINTING AT YOUR LOCAL ART CLUB Have you ever thought of taking up drawing or painting? If you would like the opportunity, how about trying your local art club in Hove. Whether you have never done any art work before or wish to reignite a long lost skill, Dupont Art Club is there to welcome you. It is open to all abilities; some members had never held a paintbrush in their lives before whilst others have made art their careers. So why not go along and give it a try! You can start by having a free “taster session”, then if you decide to join membership is £35 per annum and each session you attend is just £5 for two and a half hours and you only pay for the times you attend.31There is a tutor at every session who will help and advise you as well as demonstrating interesting art topics. Sessions are held on Wednesday afternoons 1.30 – 4pm, Thursday mornings from 10am – 12.30pm and Thursday afternoons from 1.30 – 4pm. On Thursdays there is a model all day; if you wish to draw him or her you pay a small amount extra to cover their costs. Alternatively you may choose to do a still life or your own subject. On Wednesday every fortnight the tutor will introduce a different topic ranging from the use of varied media to a specific subject. These topics are discussed and demonstrated

for those who wish to try them out. Some members just like to work on their own projects and are given advice from the tutor if they wish. Aside from weekly sessions the club has quite a varied calendar with opportunities to sketch “plein air” and they occasionally invite outside artists to talk or give demonstrations. Dupont hold an annual art exhibition and join in with the Brighton and Hove Arts Council Exhibition at the Friends Centre. Members’ art work can also be seen for sale in two cafés in Brighton. Dupont Art Club was founded in 1979, the first gatherings being at the Old Market in Hove. The name Dupont was inspired by the Dupont Riding Academy that was held there in the 1870s. After three years at the Old Market, Dupont moved, eventually ending up at the Connaught Centre in Hove. After the Connaught closed in 2010, the club moved to Ventnor Hall in Blatchington Road. That is where you will find them today, so why not go along and discover more on a Wednesday or Thursday. Take a look at their terrific website: www.dupontartclub.org.uk.

WHY YOU CAN’T SHIFT THOSE LAST FEW POUNDS The Spring Equinox falls on March 20th this year. Aside from the tell-tale usual changes in nature, an equinox also triggers in us a lot of deep changes that occur at cellular level, making it an ideal time for a detox. You’ve done it all: hit the gym at ungodly hours when your body was SCREAMING for more sleep, you’ve cut out all carbs and introduced unspeakably bland smoothies to your life, and yet, you just can’t get rid of the extra pounds or get the energy you should – surely – be getting from such a healthy lifestyle. Trouble is: you’ve probably become insulin resistant. Insulin is your fat storage hormone. In an ideal world, it transports sugar to your liver where sugar is transformed into fat to be burned off. But if you have a history of 35 excess alcohol, sugar and carbs (‘good’ or ‘bad’ ones), then sugar is not burned off and stays as fat in your liver, leading to mid-section ‘tyres’ and ‘bingo wings’. So what’s the solution? Diet is of course vital to overcome insulin resistance, so reduce or cut out all refined carbohydrates (including all sugars) but you also need to reduce stress as it can lead to inflammation – a BIG precursor of insulin resistance. So increase good fats (avocado, oily fish, nut and seeds, olive oil, coconut oil), protein (lean meats, fish, pulses, nuts, seeds, quinoa, eggs) and lots of fibre (vegetables,

some fruit, avocados, quinoa, nuts and seeds)..and relax… Go to www.newleafnutrition.co.uk for my latest insulinresistance bashing delicious recipe. PAVILION BLUES: DISABILIT A new display now in the Prints & Drawings Gallery at Brighton Museum tells the previously untold story of the 6,000 amputee soldiers who received treatment, rehabilitation and training at the Royal Pavilion during the First World War. This tale of adversity and opportunity is revealed through photographs, poetry and objects from the Pavilion Military Hospital, as well as insights into the lives and experiences of three patients. From 20th April there will also be panels in five of the Royal Pavilion’s rooms giving information on this moving story. Kevin Bacon of the Royal Pavilion writes: “The Royal Pavilion’s use as a hospital for wounded Indian soldiers is well known. Its use as a hospital for limbless men is less famous. It opened in the summer of 1916, and retained many of the same medical personnel who had run the Indian hospital. It continued to care for men who had lost arms and legs in World War One until 1920, when the Pavilion was returned to the Brighton Corporation. “The contrast with the earlier hospital is striking: the primary focus of the Indian hospital was to make the men fit enough to either return to the front or be invali-

TY AND IDENTITY ded back to India. Although the men were celebrated for their bravery in combat, little official concern seems to have been given to what happened to those men who returned home. By contrast, the hospital for limbless men was established with the aim of equipping its patients with new skills with which to rebuild their lives. “A workshop named after Queen Mary was constructed on the northern grounds of the Pavilion, where the patients could learn new skills in carpentry and engineering. But it was not all about work: the men were also given 37 a good deal of leisure time, and sports were regularly enjoyed. “Cricket, and the old Sussex game of stoolball, were popular in the hospital. As with the Paralympics today, technology was used to enable the men to take part in these sports. Football may have been amongst the other The Royal Pavilion as a World War One military hospital sports played.” Brighton Museum & Art Gallery is open from 10am until 5pm (closed on Mondays) and the display ends on 20th November. Local news that will affect manyresidents...

RESIDENTS SUPPORT CONTROLLED PARKING AS NEW AREAS ARE PROPOSED Controlled parking zones have won the approval of residents in Brighton & Hove - as the council is set to ask two more areas if they want a scheme. A survey of recently-introduced zones including R (Bolsover Road) and W (Wish Park) drew just over 100 responses, with 67 per cent agreeing or strongly agreeing their scheme worked well for them. The council’s environment and transport committee agreed on 15th March to canvass views in the Preston Village and Surrenden areas, as well as in West Hove. It follows representations from residents concerned about being unable to park near their homes. Residents in West Hove will be consulted in early 2017. All households will get a leaflet asking whether they want restrictions all day, or for certain hours, or whether they want no change. They will also be able to choose whether restrictions should apply all week or Monday to Friday. There would be an option of having limited free waiting or exclusive paid parking outside shops and services. The West Hove area to be consulted is bounded by the A259 and the Worthing-bound railway, between Roman

Road and Woodhouse Road in the east and St Leonard’s Road and Worcester Villas in the west. Committee chair Cllr Gill Mitchell said: “We’re proposing this in response to residents’ requests. It seems that where schemes are introduced people do like them. Controlled parking can make streets more pleasant and safe and there’s the obvious benefit of not having to drive round and round looking for a space.”
