Sometimes it’s good to be able to get out of the city and have down time exploring the surrounding countryside. Luckily, Sussex is home to some of the most glorious national and country parks. Seven Sisters Country Park It’ll take you an hour on the bus to get down to Seven Sisters Country Park but it’s worth it. The park is home to a steadily winding path leading down towards the coast and the famous chalk cliffs from which the park takes its name. The walk down to the beach is fairly easy but it you’re after a bit more of a challenge, take the hike up the side of the Seven Sisters and follow the South Downs Way National Trail (it’s over a 100 miles so you won’t get bored). There’s a visitors centre where you can learn more about the area and pick up a map, as well as a cute cafe tucked around the corner. Just please promise me you won’t fall off the cliff. Location: Seaford, BN25 4AD Stanmer Park If the library stress is getting real and you’re in need of a more instant headclearing walk, luckily for you Sussex Uni is based on the fringes of Stanmer Park’s rolling hills and woodland. There are great views, trees to sit under, and cows to admire - and most importantly not a book or laptop insight. Take some time out from stress-induced crying in the library and do it in beautiful surroundings instead. Stanmer Park is home to Stanmer Organics, the Walled Garden, and a tea-room serving hot drinks and cakes. Location: Stanmer Park, BN1 9PY

Your Guide to Brighton as a Student
Your Guide to Brighton as a Student NIGHTLIFE
SHOPPING
If bumping up against a sweaty stranger in a poorly lit room doesn’t sound like your bag, Brighton’s nightlife has so much more to offer. Aside from BBQs on the beach in the summer months, here are two of my favourite things that you can do all year long.
Brighton has blessed the student with a giant array of places to engage in some retail therapy, accommodating all budgets and styles. I’d recommend heading to Brighton’s beloved second-hand and charity shops to grab a bargain and reduce your contribution to fast-fashion retailers.
Pub Quiz @ The Lion and the Lobster
Beyond Retro Vintage Clothing
Having been to many a pub quiz across Brighton and Hove, I can reliably inform you that the Lion and the Lobster’s pub quiz is the best. Starting with a picture round and news of the week before meandering onto general knowledge and the dreaded maths question, there’s always a diverse selection of questions. Plus, you can’t beat £1 per person and a pizza for every team. It’s almost always packed so book ahead!
Cut out the arduous work that vintage shopping can be and head straight to Beyond Retro. Maintaining the balance between wardrobe staples and staying atop the fashion zeitgeist, their team takes inspo from international catwalks, street style, and editorial - providing classic pieces that never go out of style and current trend-focussed pieces.
Location: 24 Sillwood Street, BN1 2PS The Depot The Depot is an independent cinema in Lewes (a short train ride away from Falmer & Brighton Station) with a programme featuring mainstream films to specially curated seasons to Autism friendly screenings and more. The Depot offers £4 tickets for under 25s and operates under the principles of accessibility for all, social responsibility, and environmental sustainability. They also have a film quiz night and screen National Theatre Live productions. Location: Pinwell Road, Lewes, BN7 2JS

Totum members can get 10% off their online orders. Location: 42 Vine Street, BN1 4AG Charity Shops The timeless allure of the charity shop is that you never know what you’re going to find. Always my first pit-stop when I need a strange addition to a fancy-dress party, I’ve always been jealous of friends who can spend an entire weekend charity shop shopping, returning with amazing finds by the armful. Rumour has it the best charity shopping in Brighton is to be found on London Road - Oxfam and the British Heart Foundation are particular highlights. If you’re short on time or need something specific, the Oxfam website diligently catalogues almost all they have.

CHEAP EATS If you’re always running between the beach and your lectures, you’ll need something delicious, quick and easy to keep you going. Make sure you don’t scrimp on the quality! Check out these cheap eats. Trollburger Located in the arches between Brighton train station and the Lanes, Trollburger creates award-winning, organic ‘dirty’ burgers from scratch. Paul Clark, the man behind the buns, offers up meaty and veggie patties with a constantly rotating array of homemade seasonal sauces and pickles. Open Wednesday - Saturday, 12pm ‘til late. Need a break from your new overly-friendly flatmate? Go for ‘The Troll’s Stinky Breath’ feat. St. Giles cheese, smoked garlic mayo, and pickled cucumber. Location: Trafalgar St, opposite The Prince Albert, BN1 3DP The Real Junk Food Project Working nationally and internationally to “feed bellies, not bins.” The Real Junk Food Project intercepts food destined for the landfill from supermarkets, local shops and even farmers using it to serve delicious food on a pay-as-you-like basis. Tackling both food waste and the increasing amount of malnourished people in the UK, RJFP ensure that those in need of a free or cheap meal do not feel ashamed, whilst those who can afford to pay are supporting the venture. Check out their website and social media channels for more details and how you can get involved.
Meet your neighbourhood travel advisor We are bringing customer services to you with our neighbourhood travel advisor, Tom. Tom will be visiting Sussex University throughout the year to give you help and advice on travelling by bus. You can meet Tom at the Sussex University Welcome Weekend on 21 and 22 September.

VEGAN
COFFEE AND BRUNCH
Having once been crowned the UK’s most vegan-friendly city, Brighton certainly has the credentials to win the illustrious title again. With over 100 restaurants serving up vegan treats, you’ll be spoilt for choice. Here are some of our favourites. Happy Maki
Sugardough Student Discount
Think sushi burrito - but with a twist. Packed with fresh fusion fillings alongside the more traditional flavours, Happy Maki’s fish-free, sustainable sushi guarantees you a healthy and filling meal. I’d recommend the “Hoisin” Duck & Popcorn Cauliflower. Location: 8 Pool Valley, BN1 1PN Purezza
Willing to stick my neck out here and say that, bar from France itself, Sugardough do the best croissants. My ideal early morning consists of heading to their seafront shop in Hove, buying a coffee and croissant (or 3), and attempting to fend off seagulls on the beach. Sugardough, named one of The Telegraph’s best artisan bakeries, also offers up cakes and tarts to take away. If you’re after a more substantial brunch, they have a shop in the heart of Brighton where you can stop off for a bite whilst wandering the lanes. Location: 18 Market St, BN1 1HH
I had cheesy doubts before tucking into Purezza’s Cheesesteak Calzone earlier this year. I love cheese and no vegan replacement has quite cut the mustard for me... until now. Upon first bite, all doubts proved unsubstantiated. The ‘cheese’ is delicious, plant-based, allergen-free and completely natural. Winner winner, guilt-free dinner. Also, Purezza offers lots of options for gluten- free and raw diets so there’s really no excuse not to go. Location: 12 St James’s St, BN2 1RE HONOURABLE MENTIONS: Two Wolves Kitchen @ The Foundry Em recommends: Beer battered nori & banana blossom Location: 13-14 Foundry St, BN1 4AT Wai Kika Moo Cow Em recommends: Any and all of their baked goods Location: 11A Kensington Gardens, BN1 4AL
12
Don’t let Brighton’s nightlife ruin all that it has to offer during the day, perk up after a late night at one of these coffee shops and refuel whilst you catch up with mates.
Jaldee Jaldee @ Bottom’s Rest Em recommends: Vegan chicken malai thali Location: Conquer House, 16 Lower Market St, BN3 1AT
Redroaster If taking down a freshly roasted organic coffee amongst sleek furnishings think white marble and an abundance of houseplants - sounds like your kind of morning, you should probably head over to Redroaster in Kemptown. Not only is the coffee good and décor insta-worthy but it’s also a great place to people watch as you enjoy your delicious brunch in the summer months. Breakfast taco, anyone? Location: 1D St James’ Street, Bn2 1RE HONOURABLE MENTIONS: The Flour Pot Bakery Em recommends: Long black and a sausage roll. Student Discount Location: 40 Sydney Street (+ 6 other spots), BN1 4EP Mojo Coffee Em recommends: Detoxu Mojo smoothie Location: 148 Lewes Road, BN2 3LG
Pharmacie Coffee Em recommends: Ask the barista for a recommendation on which coffee to go for and enjoy it as a hand brewed filter. Location: 18b Cambridge Grove, BN3 3ED - Saturdays only

Sports There are over 40 sports clubs at Sussex, featuring an eclectic mix of traditional sports alongside more unconventional ones - anyone fancy Mountaineering or Ultimate Frisbee? Sussex is also a member of British University and College Sport (BUCS) - a national competitive league for University sport in the UK. Their aim? To create the best university sport experience in the world. We have 42 teams currently entered into the BUCS league, such as Lacrosse, Rugby Union, Football, Volleyball, Squash, and Hockey.
Hi, I am Becky, your Activities Officer. I represent Sussex students in sport, societies, media, volunteering, events and other student-led activities. My one bit of advice is to try and join an activity as soon as you can. As a student I studied Politics and played on the basketball team- making friends for life. I promise you won’t regret it. I’m excited to meet you all and help with the amazing things you’ll get up to this year! Contact Becky:

If your hobby is niche or you haven’t found a society you really love, then you can create your own? Running a society or sports club is easy, looks great on your CV and takes as much or as little time as you and your fellow committee members want to put into it. All you’ll need is an idea and people to be on your committee. Once approved by the Students’ Union committee, your society or sports club will be good to go. The Students’ Union will support you in your new group. We offer help with publicising activities, networking with other society committee members, storage space, inclusion into our insurance policy and more.

Supporting you during Freshers’ week and beyond Representing your acadamic interests Student Reps are one of the main ways that your Students’ Union represents your academic interests. Employability The Students’ Union is made up of over 300 full-time and part-time staff, the majority of whom are students at the University of Sussex. Our staff frequently say that the supportive atmosphere and people they work with are the very best things about working here. Working or volunteering with us is a great way to make new friends and really get stuck into student life at Sussex. Every year six students are democratically elected by the student body to work in full-time positions as the Students Union’s Full-time Officers. Officers take an active role in all aspects of Union life, responsible for the overall direction of the Students’ Union. This is covered by six roles available: President, Activities, Undergraduate Education, Postgraduate Education, Society & Citizenship, and Welfare Officers. Your Officers for the academic year are all featured in this magazine - keep an eye out for them if you want to learn more about what they do. From Events to Research and everything in between, we also offer graduate and industry placements for recent Sussex, BSMS, and IDS graduates. Check the website for the most recent information! Want to be one of the first to hear about jobs? You can keep up-to-date with Union jobs by subscribing to our vacancy notification mailing list. Go to: www.sussexstudent.com/about-us/ jobs/ to find out more.
Hi, I am Benjamin, your Postgraduate Officer. My role at the Students’ Union is to ensure the inclusiveness of Postgraduate Taught and Research Students within the wider University. Transferring into postgraduate studies is a quite daunting event, whether you’ve come straight from undergraduate study, taken a break, are working, or are returning as a mature student. In order to ease this process, you’ll find me around the campus running campaigns and events to promote the Postgraduate experience. I am available to answer any questions, concerns or comments you may have. I am here to represent and help you throughout your time at Sussex, so feel free to drop into Falmer House and have a chat, or email / message me. “All my life - people have underestimated me”.
Photos: The Head Drop
Niina
Don’t let Candy Floss’ sugary demeanour fool you. Much of the young Londoner’s career has been spent toughing it out with bigger, stronger opponents. If you’re standing across the ring from Candy when the bell rings, you’d better have a serious gameplan to avoid falling prey to her technical prowess and deadly armbar submission.
“TK Cooper, I’m going to rip your arm apart, make you tap out, so you’ll never underestimate me again”. Her foe is less than convinced. A Kiwi expat who’s made a name for himself in British wrestling - TK Cooper boasts an impressive combination of athleticism and power, but some might say that his upward trajectory of success in the last year has gone straight to his head.
“This is stupid. Credit where credit’s due - a great technical wrestler for a 19-year-old - but you don’t have time to get good enough to beat me!”. The stage was set - RIPTIDE: Deep Six at Brighton’s Brighthelm Centre. Would Cooper back up his own hype, or could Candy Floss prove that she has what it takes to topple the South Pacific Powerhouse?
Candy Floss vs TK Cooper
Welfare Officer
Health and Wellbeing at Sussex
The Brighton Faithful in attendance clearly appreciates TK Cooper’s ability but aren’t enamoured with his cocky attitude as he takes every opportunity to revel in his own dominance. As the showdown progresses, it seems like the bout is one-sided, but everyone soon learns that Candy Floss refuses to stay down. Despite Cooper’s best attempts, including a death-defying plunge from the top rope, he can’t seem to finish off his tenacious opponent. Frustration begins to set in. TK’s infamous self-confidence momentarily wanes - and Candy Floss seizes the opportunity to lock in her deadly Candy Cane armbar submission! Cooper is in BIG trouble as he screams in anguish. As each excruciating millisecond passes, it is one millisecond closer to Candy’s limb-tearing, ego-shattering prophecy coming true.
Hi, I am Niina. As your Welfare Officer, I’m here to support and represent all students with non-academic concerns or worries. My responsibilities include making sure the health and wellbeing support at Sussex is the best it can be, as well as promoting equality and diversity in all of our structures.
“TAP!” The crowd are at a fever pitch, chanting in unison for TK Cooper to surrender…
Watch RIPTIDE Wrestling Does Candy Floss grasp her validating victory, or does TK Cooper overcome? This entire match (and many other RIPTIDE Wrestling classics) can be watched in beautiful cinematic quality for free on YouTube. Or even better, head over to RIPTIDEwrestling.com to grab tickets to upcoming events. Whether you’re completely new to wrestling or a total die-hard, come and be a part of RIPTIDE’s thrilling physical theatre live show, and enjoy cheering and booing alongside our friendly, welcoming community. Welcome to our fantastic city from everyone at the council We want your stay here to be full of fun, excitement and, of course, new found knowledge! We’re very proud of our city and work hard to try to keep it clean and tidy. With 40,000 students and 11 million tourists a year, it’s a huge task. You can help by recycling properly. Why not cut out the advert on the opposite page and keep it as a handy reference. We also want to help you keep your new city clean and tidy when you’re out and about, so here are some pointers. It’s extremely important to avoid plastics and rubbish ending up on our beach and in our sea, so if you decide to have a party on the seafront please: • take your rubbish with you and find a bin, or take it home • try to avoid taking glass onto the beach • only BBQ on parts of the beach where it’s allowed • use the special bins on the promenade for used BBQ waste. ThisThis is a paid for advertorial is a paid for advertorial
Anti-social behaviour is a major blight on our city, and unfortunately we must issue Fixed Penalty Notices (FPNs) as a deterrent. So it’s only fair to let you know our environmental enforcement officers hand out fines between £75 and £300 for: • littering, including throwing cigarette butts away • fly-tipping, leaving bulky waste, like mattresses, on the street • graffiti, including tagging • fly posting and unauthorised flyering • spitting, urinating or defecating • dog fouling and not clearing it up. As in life, it’s always a small minority who spoil it for everyone else. But we’re sure we can count on your support to help us recycle more and avoid the possibility of you getting hit with an unwanted and costly fine. 27 Love our city
Brighton & Hove City Council has pledged to look at how we can help end the practice of unpaid trial shifts Councillor Amanda Evans, Brighton & Hove’s Lead Member for Community Wealth Building said: “No-one should be expected to work for free so we want to put an end to unpaid labour that is unacceptable, unethical and unfair. “Our survey will build on the work of the No Unpaid campaign group by giving us local information that we can use to find practical ways of tackling the issue.” ‘Say No To Unpaid Trial Shifts’ is a grassroots collective started by students in Brighton & Hove. Campaign co-founder Frank Chamberlain said: “The work of young people is demeaned by the concept that we should be asked to work for free. Too many young people, competing in a saturated job 28 a paid advertorial ThisThis is aispaid forfor advertorial
market, feel like they have no choice but to undertake unpaid trial shifts, with no guarantee of a job at the end of it. On some occasions, it has become apparent that employers had no intention of offering a job at all. “We hear horror stories of nine hour shifts and ridiculous anecdotes of compensation being given in the form of bread, beer and even spices. Even short unpaid trial shifts are time-consuming, and force vulnerable jobseekers into working for free” Find out more about the campaign at www.nounpaid.com Unpaid trial shifts can be reported to HMRC who investigate claims on a case by case basis. No Unpaid has simplified this process by providing an easy-to-use complaint letter-generator on its website. ACAS also provide free, confidential help and advice for workers. See the council’s information for businesses and prospective job applicants at www.brighton-hove.gov.uk/uts
Help us end unpaid trial shifts in Brighton & Hove We’re supporting a local campaign to end the practice of unpaid trial shifts in the city and we want you to help us understand the scale and nature of the issue. An unpaid trial shift is where an employer fails to pay for work which either makes money from a prospective employee or saves money for the employer. My name is Xianzhao. I used to be an undergraduate student of University of Sussex. I was an international student originally from China, and thanks to the support from Sussex Innovation Centre, I got the chance to start up my own business in the UK after my graduation in 2018. My company creates and runs an app named X-Cognition. It is a virtual learning platform originally inspired by the concept of virtual communities of practice where a group of people with common interests using communication technology to share and learn knowledge.

TIM HECKER PRESENTS ANOYO SUGAI KEN
When I was an undergraduate student, I found there were many people/ organisations providing ghost writing services, and quite a few students, especially international students(e.g. several friends of mine) chose to use those services for their coursework. After some investigations, I found the main reason for those students to use ghost writing was because they have various learning barriers caused by language, feeling embarrassed to ask questions in class, etc.
15 OCTOBER
So me and my team developed X-Cognition to help students with different learning barriers to overcome their barriers and also for those who want to improve themselves to achieve greater studying goals!
