site was blessed with beautiful gardens, a magnificent ballroom and roof sundecks that attracted the “in-crowd” for a weekend by the sea. Today the apartments have a similar appeal with many being sold as weekend and holiday bolt holes for those yearning for that unique combination of the cleansing sea air and the vibrancy of a Brighton weekend.
Grand Ocean, the restored art deco landmark now converted to luxury apartments, has joined an illustrious list as one of the most famous buildings in Brighton. The development, formerly the Grand Hotel overlooking the sea at Saltdean, has been chosen as the starting point of a new tour which takes visitors on an architectural journey of the city. Grand Ocean is indeed in fine company as the tour takes in the Georgian splendour of Kemp Town, the world renowned Pavilion, the famous pier and the Grand Hotel. Ever since the Prince Regent built his extravagant Pavilion, Brighton has been proud to be seen as out of the ordinary, as offering visitors and residents something special. Today, the transformation of Grand Ocean from the iconic art deco hotel into a collection of stunning luxury apartments is continuing the city’s association with the architecturally exceptional. For much of its history the Grand Ocean site has been a landmark destination. Built as one of the most spectacular hotels on the South Coast, the
Today Grand Ocean is simply one of the finest coastal developments in the UK. The development offers a range of luxury one and two bedroom apartments along with a very few penthouse apartments which, with their huge wrap-around terraces and 29ft long living rooms offering wonderful sea views, simply take the breath away.
attractions, night life and arts scene. A short taxi ride allows you to sample the myriad restaurants, bars and quirky eateries and to finish the evening with a walk along the sea front. The Pavilion Theatre and the Brighton Centre offer a year round choice of big names and fringe artists and the Lanes offer endless hours of rummaging in antique shops, visiting galleries or enjoying a cappuccino and watching the world go by. For those whose love of the sea extends to more than simply enjoying the spectacular views, Grand Ocean is just five minutes from Brighton Marina and its 1600 berths.
Internally, the apartments find the perfect balance of contemporary style that pays tribute to heritage but delivers the very best of modern convenience with the latest kitchens and bathroom designs and oak finishes to all internal doors.
Prices for an apartment at Grand Ocean often surprise, being just outside the City Centre you get that much more for your money. 2 bedroom apartment prices begin at just £249,995 whilst the breathtaking penthouse is on the market at £479,995. WELCOME TO THE JULY ISSUE OF
SUSSEXSTYLE
A huge thank you to all our readers… And so, after six years’ waiting, summer finally has arrived. With that and Andy Murray winning Wimbledon (as predicted by Greg Rusedski in last month’s issue) 2013 seems set to be a summer to remember. Meanwhile in the Sussex Style offices we are spending the summer months dancing around happily as we are so delighted that our magazine has been so well-received. I have had some great emails from readers landing in my inbox (keep them coming, I really appreciate communication) while one retailer even told publisher Seán that he was so inspired by my feature on rebranding the High Street that he went and gave his own store a makeover. We are on a mission/adventure to create the best magazine in Sussex with smart, sassy and irreverent features (whether it is frocks or fracking) that are a must-read. And we’re free! Can it get any better? Yes it can, we’re not complacent, but pushing ahead with new ideas every month. This month we have a new foodie writer, Sam Bilton, greedily scoffing and slurping her way around Sussex on our behalf. The inspiring Sofie Allsopp has written a fascinating piece about turning to the internet for interior (and exterior) design ideas, our new gadgets and gizmos writer Callum Stannard is almost persuading me to ditch the paperback with his review of e-readers, while Daniel Raven turns his acerbic attention on Brighton Weirdos – watch out, Brighton!

FOCUS: FOREST ROW What’s the fuss about… asks Emma Piper
32
July 2013
www.sussexstyle.co.uk
SUSSEX STYLE
The village is a bit of a mash-up with a curious mix of rustic, old-fashioned and smart and chic
F
orest Row is a surprise: an oversized village with a collection of swanky shops surrounded by wooded hillsides. It sits on the northernmost edge of Ashdown Forest - 6,500 acres of woodland and heathland perhaps more familiar as the home of Winnie the Pooh. WHY The location is the draw: rural but commutable. Forest Row abuts Ashdown Forest with houses hidden down tracks that twist away into woodland. It’s perfect for those seeking privacy (reputedly the likes of Ben Elton and Dave Gilmour live here) yet still need access to London which is a little over 30 miles away, although it doesn’t have its own railway station; East Grinstead is the nearest mainline station. For those moving out of London it is considered a relatively soft move, it’s not so far that it’s scary. WHAT Forest Row is described as a vibrant village with a diverse range of shops and a strong community. I’m assured there’s always something going on from the scrabble club at Coco Café to the jazz club at Forest Row Social Club. A highlight of the year is the Forest Row Festival in September involving all the villagers and including art, music, a bike fest, beer fest and food and craft market. WHERE The housing market is dominated by Victorian, Edwardian and Pre-war houses with a few older properties in the centre. There’s also a bias towards four-bedroom detached houses.
The most favoured roads include Rystwood Road which has the most expensive properties, Dale Road and Ashdown Road which are both attractive and popular roads, while Deerhurst Park has big, modern executive houses. Houses tucked along the roads that become tracks into Ashdown Forest are really desirable. THE LOOK The village is a bit of a mash-up with a curious mix of rustic, old-fashioned and smart and chic. There’s everything you need from friendly cafés to gorgeous boutiques. If you approach along Hartfield Road, Forest Row is all tree-fringed picturesque greens. FAMILY A friendly atmosphere, some great recreational facilities, including a cricket pitch, playgrounds, and all those acres of Forest for adventure. People buy into the area for the top notch schools. The village primary school has been rated Good by Ofsted, the Michael Hall Steiner Waldorf school draws lots of interest, bringing in Dutch and Germans and those keen for children to thrive in an educational environmental that’s a little softer, while Ashdown School is considered one of the leading prep schools in Sussex and the South-East. FOOD & DRINK Although only a village, Forest Row supports a variety of promising eateries including Taffels café and deli open for breakfasts, lunches and afternoon teas as well as dinners Friday and Saturday evenings. Then there’s Aldeia, an
www.sussexstyle.co.uk

propertystyle authentic Portuguese restaurant (open evenings), and The Swan, once the old village inn now a bar and restaurant serving up dishes with an unexpected leaning towards ‘Mountain Range’ food such as tartiflette (potatoes, cream, bacon and onions baked and topped with reblochon cheese), Himalayan goat curry and cheese fondue. Perhaps the most popular is Java & Jazz, a lively, atmospheric café, pizzeria and gelato recommended by aforementioned Ben Elton as well as Ronnie Wood. SHOPPING Forest Row has a great selection of independents such as award-winning fishmongers Veasey & Sons with some fresh fish caught by their own boat based in Eastbourne, a haberdashery, colourful hardware store, plus a cache of upmarket shops such as Jeroen Markies

specialising in art deco antiques, stylish Kingsnorth Interiors, girlie Cadari home boutique, Ashdown Gallery for big impressionistic landscapes, Lily Grace lingerie, and Neilsons – voted by Grazia as one of the best fashion boutiques outside London. Then there’s Wine Discoveries selling great wines from small producers, Global Adventurer for outdoor types and West One Bathrooms. And yet there’s something a bit new-agey about Forest Row. On the outskirts is Tablehurst Community Farm Shop and café selling farm produce from a community-owned 550 acre biodynamic and organic farm with regular barbecues and barn dances during summer. Plus there’s Seasons Organic Food Shop, and a few clinics and salons with an
emphasis on a natural approach, such as Gaia Natural Health. THE DOWNSIDE The busy A22 crashes through the centre. WHAT DO YOU THINK? Tell us why you like living in Forest Row. NEXT ISSUE We’re visiting Eastbourne and East Grinstead. Give us the inside knowledge on these two towns… Where do you eat, drink and chill, what are the best bits and do you have any irritations to share? Email: emma.piper@sandrpublishing.co.uk

t was a perfect summer day when I rolled up outside the beautiful 16th century country cottage in West Ashling where I was to meet Neil Lawson-Baker, artist and sculptor and chairman of National Open Art, which he has transformed into what is considered to be the best open art competition in the UK attracting the likes of Brian Sewell and Grayson Perry as judges and with over £60,000 in prize money. Several competitors have even gone on to become recognized artists selling worldwide (entry to this year’s competition closes 31 July). The tranquility of the setting bathed in the warm sunshine with roses tumbling carelessly down the thatched roof and the soporific hum of bees in the background did nothing to prepare me for the human dynamo who came bursting from his studio. Neil is just four months away from his 75th birthday but looks like a fit guy in his fifties. He greeted me with the enthusiasm and bonhomie he imbues in everything and within minutes I was parked in his amazing timbered studio on one of those lovely, old sagging sofas with bits of art work pushed up against one end. For two and a half hours I listened, slack-jawed, to the life of a man who

has really lived. If ever I have met a mover and a shaker this person is right up there with the best. His energy and zest for life is almost alarming. If I wasn’t so polite I would have asked him what he was on and could I please have a warehouse full of it and let’s patent it!
main enemy was boredom. This was a man used to working five days a week employing hand to eye skills, and so he decided to have a go at doing some sculpture as it requires a similar discipline; in sculpting he discovered a new passion.
Although art is the thing Neil is immersed in now, he started his professional career training at Guy’s and St George’s to be a dental surgeon and was interested in maxillofacial surgery. During his distinguished career, which spanned 40 years, he worked in the plastic and reconstructive field and in radiotherapy at Charing Cross Hospital and the Royal Marsden among others, and set up his own dental practice in Belgravia, bringing together a top team of practitioners. This in time became the pre-eminent reconstruction dental practice in Europe. But hang on, what have teeth to do with art?
Having always been interested in art, collecting all forms to adorn his house and garden, he now found himself creating it. Back at work he would get chatting to his well-connected patients, some of whom could be with him for a whole day at a time, and before he knew it he found people opening doors for him as a sculptor and within a very short time he found himself working on his first major commission for one of the big boys - British Gas.
In 1987 while treating a patient the needle he was using slipped and punctured his hand through the plastic glove. It was a minor accident, not something to be too concerned about, except that the patient was a carrier of Hepatitis B and Neil became infected. For several months he was seriously ill. But while he was convalescing the

A lesser person might have been overwhelmed, but Neil, with that positive gung- ho nature of his, sees everything as a challenge and after two years of hard work he succeeded in producing two identical pieces wrought in bronze, both 25-feet high, which stand outside British Gas headquarters in Loughborough and Reading. Commissions kept coming, including a massive piece of work standing 50-feet high in the form of a keris outside the fourth largest stadium in the world
in Kuala Lumpur. It was ordered by the then prime minister, Mahathir Mohamad, and very quickly became a national monument. If you think your commute to work every day is hard then let me run this by you: Neil would work from Monday to Thursday in his dental practice, then hop on a plane on Friday for a 13hour flight to Malaysia to work on the sculpture and get the plane back on Sunday evening to be in his practice on Monday 8 am sharp. For most of us that in itself would be enough to dine out on for the rest of our lives, but this man, who had never ridden before, also took up three-day eventing after surviving testicular cancer having been given three months to live. He came second in his first event six weeks after getting on a horse. He has gone on to own and sponsor horses with one that went on to be picked for the British Team. He has also played sax and clarinet in a jazz band, raced a sports car round the world to raise money for the Chearish Fund for Children’s Hospices, and in particular Helen House , the first chldren’s hospice in the world, which he founded, and opened the first oral

We are all on the search for the ultimate treatment to keep us looking young and beautiful, but many of us don’t like the idea of invasive treatments thank you very much. NewTechBody represents a revolutionary anti-ageing, non-invasive breakthrough therapy. Developed by German scientist Heinz Freier, the NewTechBody beauty

treatment is turning back time for hundreds of women and men. By penetrating skin tissue with electric impulses that cause high-frequency electromagnetic vibrations, the machine stimulates collagen fibres – a protein responsible for building skin strength and elasticity, preventing wrinkles. This safe non-invasive treatment is said to have extraordinary powers to reduce lines and encourage brighter, clearer skin, and was launched last February at Bolney near Haywards Heath. It is the first treatment of its kind in the UK.
NewTechBody also offers ultrasound fat reduction techniques for men and women, which are especially suited to targeting difficult areas of the body, including love handles, wobbly thighs and bingo wings. The method uses painless ultrasound waves to break down deposits of fatty tissue without damaging the surrounding area, encouraging the body’s natural processes to safely and permanently dispose of excess fat, leading to a more sculpted shape without the need for a nip and tuck!

Carly Hesketh-Read, managing director of NewTechBody, says: “Until now, lifting saggy and wrinkly skin has been the job of the plastic surgeon. This changed with the discovery of diathermy, which is the heat penetration of tissue through high frequency electro-magnetic vibration that directly heats up the connective tissue without damaging the upper layers of the skin. ”The effects are immediately visible on the skin which keeps showing improvements for several months after the therapy has ended.” As one delighted client commented: “I didn’t think it was possible to have the result that I have had without plastic surgery!” NewTechBody, Bolney www.newtechbody.com

hot spot: horsham Is there a Horsham effect? Emma Piper visits
44
July 2013
www.sussexstyle.co.uk
P
eople visit Horsham for the day and stay. This lovely and lively market town offers what you find you need in life (comfort and quality), rather than what you think you want (excitement and edge). WHY First of all there is the relatively easy commute into London. Trains from Horsham and Littlehaven stations take 55 minutes or so into Victoria or London Bridge while there are decent road links to south London. Next there is the totally impressive selection of state and private schools. And then there is the lifestyle. Horsham has quality of life wrapped up. WHAT Horsham is, oh, so much lovelier than I expected it to be. This is a market-based town centre with bandstand (with free regular concerts), cobbled streets, wide pedestrianised areas adorned with specimen trees (such as gingko and Indian bean trees) and quaint weatherboarded and tile-hung period cottages and townhouses. The motor car has been tamed and the town centre given over to pedestrians with lots of public space for meeting and eating. Shopping feels safe, calm
and easy – no wonder Horsham has such a buoyant, busy high street, and there are frequent special events throughout the year, including the Big Nibble, Piazza Italia and French Fest, as well as regular weekly markets. You can even reach the arts venue and the lush acres of Horsham Park with its inviting outdoor-indoor pool complex without crossing any main roads. WHERE Commuters like to be within walking distance of the station while families favour the catchment areas for those schools which are particularly highly rated by Ofsted – for example the west side of Horsham, the location of Tanbridge Park school, is a hot favourite at present. The suburbs north of Horsham are popular with commuters due to Littlehaven mainline station, while St Leonard’s and south of Horsham attracts those looking for the best of both worlds, town and country, as roads quickly run into woodland and farmland. If you want a more rural location, villages that attract attention include Warnham and Slinfold as both have shops. THE LOOK Causeway must take the award for Horsham’s most picturesque street
lined with 17th, 18th and 19th century houses hidden behind London plane trees, although the east side of Horsham has plenty of good, turn of the century properties with lots of character. Otherwise there’s an array of substantial pre-war and more modern family houses. FAMILY Families gather to picnic and play in Horsham Park, landscaped acres with tennis courts, gardens, maze, Pavilions in the Park swimming complex, café and more. Close by is The Capitol arts venue comprising theatre, cinemas, studio and gallery space. Horsham also offers a programme of family-orientated activities and events throughout the year, but it is those schools that are the major draw for families. Most are rated Good by Ofsted, but an impressive list have achieved the accolade of Outstanding, among them Heron Way primary, Tanbridge Park (co-educational specialist science, mathematics and computing college), Millais (girls’ comprehensive) and Collyer’s sixth form college. Then we mustn’t forget the highly-respected independent Christ’s Hospital on the outskirts. FOOD & DRINK East Street has been nicknamed www.sussexstyle.co.uk

Bill’s is in the old town hall on the Market Square and The Black Jug pub on North Street is worth checking out. There’s an Italian deli, lots of cafes including Artisan Patisserie and Tea Rooms, and regular produce markets for foodies. Although there’s a Waitrose in a pretty courtyard location it’s on the small side and plans have just been touted for relocating Waitrose and creating a new John Lewis Home on the west of the town. SHOPPING This is a bustling, vibrant and prosperous town centre. Swan Walk is a light-filled shopping centre with names such as Marks & Spencer and Monsoon, Gerry Weber and Jones the Bootmaker. Otherwise the centre comprises the wide pedestrianised Carfax and lovely cobbled streets, squares and passageways. It is particularly good for home boutiques with La Source’s contemporary and continental collection, Inside Design for names such as Designer’s Guild, Pure White Lines’ shabby chic furniture and a rather cool upholsterer.

Use the Dulux Paint App to find the perfect colour

ir Tim Berners-Lee might not be a household name but he has done more to change the way we live than any other Briton for a century. If you asked many people who he was they may well draw a blank, Kyle Minogue’s gold hot pants are probably more recognisable, but Sir Tim invented the World Wide Web. It is hard now to think what we did before the Internet – before Google, emails, You Tube and online shopping – we definitely watched fewer cats doing ‘crazy’ things. The World Wide Web has even changed the way we decorate – previously if you found it difficult finding the right paint colour to match the curtains, couldn’t summon up inspiration for the spare bedroom or just felt overwhelmed by the choice of fabrics for the sofa, your only recourse was hiring a professional or pouring over interiors magazines.

That’s all changed; the Internet is a fantastic tool, an endless source of inspiration and advice – from apps to help you choose the right paint colour to step-by-step instructions on how to hang wallpaper. Here are my top five apps, websites and blogs to help you design the house you have always wanted. Dulux Paint App There are quite a few android apps on the market which can help you choose paint colours and schemes. One example is the Dulux app which is easy to use and free and they have a wide range of colours. With this app you can take a photograph of a colour you like – for example I took a photograph of a mahogany table top on my android phone and the app immediately matched it to a Dulux paint (Fire Cracker 1) and also suggested colours which

Next time you see a mint green vase and think it would be the perfect colour for the hall you can upload a photograph of it and get a pretty good colour match. The app also has master classes and tutorials to help you with your DIY projects. Back to Front Exterior Design This website is truly inspirational: the Back to Front Exterior Design company provides an architectural design service that specialises in remodelling and extending unattractive properties and turning them into beautiful houses. Anyone who is buying a house should visit this website as it is amazing what you can do to the exterior of a house. An ugly 1960s bungalow can be transformed into a contemporary masterpiece; a plain 1930s house can be given a Georgian makeover. If you are

house hunting and you have been put off by the exterior of the property then this website proves that you can change the exterior as well as the interior. Decor8 Holly Becker has been writing her blog Decor8 for six years, it has proved so popular that she now has a spin-off book to her name. This is an American blog and it is sometimes a little twee – I am not sure many people would have the time or inclination to make ceramic feathers to use as napkin rings – but there is also a lot of good in this blog. What do you do when you rip up the old shag carpet in your new house to find concrete rather than parquet? A lot of people would think the only solution was wood flooring or new carpeting. Not Holly, she shows you how to treat the floor, get rid of the old carpet adhesive, fill any holes, sand and then paint the concrete. It is cheap, durable and looks incredibly chic. create and manage a collection of theme-based photographs and users can browse others’ collections and ‘like’ and ‘re-pin’ images. It is effectively a giant mood board, a limitless source of inspiration. If you are redesigning your bathroom, for example, you can find images of every style of bathroom imaginable – from the mundane and practical to the out-of-this-world. If your house is desperately short of space and your clutter is taking over, you don’t have to settle for a floating shelf anymore: type in ‘storage’ and heypresto images of every conceivable type of storage solution – from book shelf room dividers to walk-in wardrobes to salivate over – will pop up. My current favourite collection is entitled ‘inspired living’ and includes images such as a floating cabin in a Norwegian fjord or a beach house in Bilbao. Houzz.com This American website has been billed as the Wikipedia of interior design and if you love interiors this is the site for you. There are millions of images, but the website is very easy to use. You
can browse by room and theme. For example, if you are remodelling your kitchen click on Kitchens, then click on the style you want: be it modern, traditional, eclectic or retro. You can also be more specific and browse through the choice of countertops, tiles, or islands. If you don’t find a kitchen you like on this website you never will. Houzz has advice on pretty much everything – from how to use bold colours in your home to which types of house plants can withstand months of neglect. If you enjoy nosing round other peoples’ houses and property porn was invented for you then Houzz could become a time-consuming distraction. I could spend hours browsing this site – it provides practical advice, escapism, inspiration and some pretty sexy interiors.

T
he success of The Upholsterer would, according to Mary Portas, appear to go against the commonly held perception of what is happening on Britain’s high streets. This personalised, quality, independent supplier of upholstery services, individually tailored curtains, fabrics, bespoke furniture, and interior design services has not only survived the recession but moved from strength to strength. Husband and wife team Laura and Milos Jandac opened The Upholsterer in October 2009. Milos is the upholsterer and brings more than 20 years experience to the craft he cares so much about. Laura studied textile design at Leeds University, supplementing this with a diploma in interior design at the renowned KLC School of Design in Chelsea Harbour. Fabrics are Laura’s passion which, combined with her creative abilities, enable her to help clients find exciting solutions to their design and fabric needs. A full upholstery service includes advice about a range of options such as piping
finish, deep buttoning, padding and replacement springs, while a choice of more than 2,500 fabrics meets clients’ varied needs, budgets and preferences from conservative to contemporary and eclectic. In line with The Upholsterer’s philosophy of tailoring their services to meet customers’ specific needs, all curtains are handmade locally. A free consultancy service includes design advice, measurement, finish and trimmings guidance to ensure customers’ budget and style requirements are met. Similarly with blinds, where the sheer volume of blind types and operating mechanisms can be difficult to fathom, free tailored consultancy and guidance is also available. As the space in which we live has such a vital influence on our state of being, The Upholsterer is happy to offer decoration advice transforming a blank canvas into a finished living area with a samples service that enables customers to colour match and complement existing features, shades and fabrics.
For those who cannot find the exact design or shape they want Milos has years of experience in designing and creating bespoke furniture. From sofas and chairs to upscale children’s furniture, Milos offers a highly focused and personalised approach to meeting customers’ needs. The workshop is on-site and potential and existing customers are encouraged to view the high quality of workmanship for which the business has become known. Laura and Milos have created an approach based totally around the customer and their needs. Their shop is run with a relaxed ambience and style that makes The Upholsterer a haven for anyone wanting to steer away from standard furnishings in favour of creating their own personal touch. ART WORKS
Express yourself, says Anna Dodonova of Anna Casa Interiors, who advises on how to choose art for your home

SUSSEX STYLE
That is the beauty of art; everyone has their own individual tastes but everyone can appreciate a good artwork piece
T
here is no better way of expressing your personality in the home than through the artwork you choose to hang on your walls. I believe every home should have this truly personal touch, and it is not simply about filling up empty walls.
As art is one of the biggest reflections of someone’s personality, it does need to be a piece that is specific to the home owner. Art isn’t an accessory and neither can it be easily changed, so be sure to pick the right piece. Neither does it need to be a traditional painting in oils or watercolours, photography can look very effective in the home. Energy is a big part of my life and art has a lot of positive energy. I believe that certain images and sculptures have the power to recharge you simply by looking at them. This is something that I feel Caroline True has managed to do in her new photographic collection Flowers. Caroline and I have recently started working with each other and her work is simply inspiring. Whether you are looking to brighten up a minimalist room or add to the vibrancy of an eccentric room, Caroline’s photographs fit perfectly. Caroline’s photographic creativity and passion for nature has led her to create a captivating and seductive collection of images of flowers. These modern and hypnotic photographs create a fantastic focal point to any room and her dramatic yet delicately intricate patterns have a kaleidoscope effect that brings nature to life in an unexpected way. Personally I think they work in a variety of situations whether within a commercial or residential property. Every few months I like to introduce a new artist’s work into my showroom in Mayfair, creating a platform for artists to showcase their latest work. Recent artists have included Nicola Savik and Alex Turco, and that was also how I came to work with Caroline. www.sussexstyle.co.uk

Two of the images from Caroline’s Flowers collection
Caroline made her name in the 1980s and 1990s producing music videos for the likes of Virgin Records, Limelight Films and Ridley Scott Associates, and worked with artists such as George Michael, The Rolling Stones, Janet Jackson, David Bowie and Mariah Carey. More recently she has been commissioned as a photographer to work with Geri Halliwell, Pearl Lowe and Anna Friel, and by The Sunday Times Magazine, The Telegraph Magazine, Style Magazine, You Magazine and many others. They like the keen eye and inimitable style she brings to every project – indeed she has worked extensively for George Michael throughout her career and was his photographer of choice for his recent Symphonica tour. George has said of her: “Caroline has the exact thing you need; she sees the moment and then makes it look even better.”

My favourite piece of hers is a very simple image which fits perfectly in most rooms due to its subtle beauty, however I think if I were to hang it somewhere in my home it would probably be the bedroom as there is something so sensual and sexual about it with its blend of soft and bold tones. That is the beauty of art; everyone has their own individual tastes but everyone can appreciate a good artwork piece. Some of my favorite artists include Lorenzo Quinn with his incredible sculptures. They are more than sculptures though, they tell a story. Mauro Perucchetti is another favourite of mine: the colours he uses in his work are so energetic and bright they can bring any room to life. Some people ask what the rules are about using art in a room. I say there are no rules, it is about expressing your free and creative side, exploring your imagination and soul. You can place
art anywhere: a bedroom, a bathroom, a kitchen… There is no right or wrong place. Personally I like to play with period and styles, combining antique art pieces with a modern interior always works wonderfully. Or vice versa. They complement each other perfectly. There are only two or three things to remember. If you have a great collection of fine art you should use the colours and textures in the room as a background to this as the aim is to draw the eye to the piece of art rather than the walls. However, if you simply want to hang something on the wall that fits with the style of the room you might like to consider something more generic such as a monochrome image.
I always try to experiment with the juxtaposition of form, texture and colour with a chosen group of objects and try and connect the display to the rest of the scheme, perhaps through an accent of colour. Finally, I always give the same advice about art to people looking to introduce art into a space. Don’t be afraid to research the artist, their work and see what’s out there before making a decision. Make sure you have thought about what a piece means to you before putting it up on your wall. If you can tick these boxes you’re on the right track!
Another key point is to be sure to hang your art at the right height. People are constantly hanging their pieces too high which make them uncomfortable to look at. They should be at eye level so you don’t have to tilt your head back. www.sussexstyle.co.uk

ICONIC SUSSEX
W
hen Littlehampton resident Jane Wood purchased the site of what is now the East Beach Café she did it only as a desperate way to stop the planned development of a monstrous two-storey carbuncle that would have ruined her sea view. Suddenly she had a prime seafront plot but no idea what to do with it! Enter Fate in the shape of a chance meeting with brilliant designer Thomas Heatherwick at a charity lunch... The result is one of Sussex’s most striking buildings, chosen by RIBA as one of the star UK constructs of 2007. What Thomas Heatherwick and Jane Wood cooked up for his first British building was an architectural wonder inspired by a warped mottled hunk of weathered driftwood (as you do). “The seaside at Littlehampton has a raw beauty,” enthused Thomas Heatherwick at the time. “Rather than make something swanky and shiny, we decided to make something that almost looks like it’s from the sea.”

East Beach Café visited by Norman Miller
Rather than straight edges and right angles, the East Beach Café is a rippling shell made from sliced metal sections forged in a specialist Littlehampton foundry admired by Thomas from earlier projects. Each section was artfully rusted with seawater to provide a suitably weathered coastal patina then, after nine months of crafting, lifted into place one sunny morning with prayers this complex piece of engineering would slot together as planned. Of course it all fitted perfectly, and today it’s a seafront beacon contrasting brilliantly with the more old-fashioned seaside charms around – chippies, amusement arcades, kiddie play areas. A wide glass frontage gazes toward the adjacent beach and ocean. Inside a pale bright dining space mirrors the ripples of the outside, somehow managing to be cutting edge and cosy at the same time, like the inside of some slightly surreal cave.
And don’t be fooled by the word Café into thinking this is your typical seaside gaff. The East Beach serves great nosh done with panache from a team led by a Ritz-trained chef. Pan fried sea bream comes on a bed of artichoke and beetroot, the crab linguine kicks with a dash of chilli, and even good old fish and chips means zingingly fresh local catch with fantastic twice-cooked fries. After eating, step outside and take a bracing walk to the mouth of the Arun, where a glorious wide dune-backed sandy beach beckons over on the west bank. There you’ll find the West Beach Café, the East Beach’s simpler but still elegantly modern riverside cousin, designed by Asif Khan – the man behind the 2012 Olympics Beat Box Pavilion. But that can be a story for another day. East Beach Café, The Promenade, Littlehampton 01903 731903 www.eastbeachcafe.co.uk

HOMES with a difference
Fancy living in a turret or having your own private cinema? Here’s your chance at Hart’s Wood

art’s Wood, Crest Nicholson’s most spacious and sophisticated collection of houses within the Bolnore Village development, are so special that just four of the nine five-bedroom homes are still available following the collection’s recent launch. The properties are individually designed and configured so that very few are exactly alike; the architecture is dignified and traditional, and comfortably settled into its surroundings. All have a study, spacious kitchen/breakfast room and extensive private gardens, while some of the homes include unexpected features such as a cinema room or a sun room! Just one of the remaining homes features a stunning turret design which has proved exceptionally popular with buyers.
Christine Tiernan, sales and marketing director, Crest Nicholson South, comments: “Many are attracted to this area of West Sussex by the beautiful countryside of the South Downs, especially now it is protected by National Parks status, plus the easy commute to London and the proximity to the sea and the lively arts scene in Brighton, just 12 miles away. “Crest Nicholson is proud to have three developments in Sussex, and we’re particularly proud of Hart’s Wood at Bolnore Village. It has proved to be such a special collection of homes that half of them have already sold since the recent launch.”
The exclusive homes share all of the many benefits of Bolnore Village, however they stand apart in terms of quality of design. Villeroy and Boch bathroom suites, granite worktops and ceramic floor tiles in the kitchens, as well as an integrated, multi-room sound system with an iPod docking station to the ground floor, are just a few of the upgraded specifications each of the sophisticated homes offers. The Hart’s Wood collection stands alone in a leafy enclave on a private cul-de-sac off Bolnore Road surrounded by lush hedgerows and woodland. Although the centre of Haywards Heath is within walking distance, the feeling within Hart’s Wood is that of simple tranquillity
and the homes enjoy lovely views across open countryside.
Local facilities are excellent for commuters, too, as the development is just 1.8 miles from Haywards Heath mainline station, where trains to London take as little as 21 minutes and just 15 minutes to Gatwick Airport. For families with children, Bolnore Village Primary School, a new self-governing, parent-promoted school, has recently opened on the site. The development is also within the catchment area of some of the excellent local schools. Prices for five-bedroom homes at Hart’s Wood start from £794,950. rand Ocean, the restored art deco landmark now converted to luxury apartments, has joined a list of illustrious buildings included in a new tour of the architectural highlights of Brighton. The development, formerly the Grand Hotel overlooking the sea at Saltdean, has been chosen as the starting point of the tour which leads visitors on an architectural journey of the city taking in Kemp Town, the extravagant Pavilion, the famous pier and the Grand Hotel. Ever since John Nash built the Prince Regent his extravagant Pavilion,

Brighton has attracted architects seeking to push the boundaries of their craft and never was this more so in the 1920s and 1930s with the advent of art deco. The expression of this style was to find a particular home at Saltdean on the eastern fringes of the city with the building of the Grand Hotel and the Saltdean Lido by RWH Jones in 1938. For much of its history the Grand Ocean site has been a landmark destination. Built as one of the most spectacular hotels on the south coast, the site was blessed with beautiful gardens, a magnificent ballroom and roof sundecks that attracted the in-crowd for a weekend by the sea. Today the
apartments have a similar appeal with many being sold as weekend and holiday bolt holes for those yearning for that unique combination of the cleansing sea air and the vibrancy of a Brighton weekend Grand Ocean is simply one of the finest coastal developments in the UK. The development offers a range of luxury one and two bedroom apartments along with a very few penthouse apartments which, with their huge wrap-around terraces and 29ft long living rooms offering wonderful sea views, simply take the breath away.
SUSSEX STYLE
Internally the apartments achieve the perfect balance of contemporary style that pays tribute to heritage but delivers the very best of modern convenience with the latest kitchens and bathroom designs and oak finishes to all internal doors. Grand Ocean has recently unveiled three large statues by leading local artist Jon Mills, created to celebrate the completion of the development. The iconic Grand Ocean building was one of the country’s leading hotels in its art deco heyday of the 1930s. In the ‘50s it became the first ever Butlin’s resort hotel before falling into disrepair.
The three specially commissioned metal sculptures that now adorn the Grand Ocean building are entitled Stepping Up and evoke both the dancing heritage of the building and the new life breathed into it by the Explore Living restoration. The artwork consists of two pairs of larger-than-life couples dancing around two musicians and makes a significant visual reference to the art deco style of the 1930s.
As Grand Ocean is located just outside the city centre, prices are perhaps a surprise, you get that much more for your money, with a two-bedroom apartment starting from just £299,995 while the breathtaking penthouses are on the market for just a little over £500,000.
Mills says: “As silhouettes the figures display a ‘snapshot’ quality reminiscent of shadows or memories of the hotel’s ballroom, while also reflecting the spirit of leisure and the ‘good times’ of the Butlins’ years.”

AVOIDING THE ACID TRIP
On the Holy Grail of healthy eating Natasha Corrett discovered alkaline foods and transformed her life
I
t all started when I hurt my back in 2009 and my mum sent me to an ayurvedic acupuncturist who said I was completely acidic and suggested I go on an alkaline cleanse. He said he can spot an acidic person straight away – they look stressed and bloated. He then asked me if I struggled to lose weight, felt heavy, tired and struggled to wake up in the mornings and concentrate during the day. Basically he was describing how I felt most of the time.

After some hesitation, having tried so many ‘fads’ in the past (my weight had yo-yo-ed for years having tried different diets), I decided to do it. He put me on a 21-day alkaline cleanse and within days I felt amazing. I’d never really heard of alkaline eating before, but it seemed simple and I never felt hungry. My energy levels improved, my skin glowed, the weight fell off gradually. Crucially, it stayed off.
I wanted to learn about alkaline food so I spoke to my Godmother Vicki Edgson, one of the country’s top nutritionists, and learnt what happens to food when digested. Surprisingly, foods you think are acidic, such as lemon, are actually very alkaline when digested. I had learned to cook at my father’s restaurants in the summer holidays and started to cook using alkaline foods for the holistic retreats I then ran. When
Our top tips to an alkaline lifestyle
SUSSEX STYLE
• Drink coconut milk for breakfast; it’s a great way to fill your body with protein, healthy alkaline and minerals, ensuring your body is super hydrated for the day. • Snack on vegetables or nuts throughout the day. Replace chocolate and crisps with fresh raw alkaline vegetables such as celery or a bag of nuts such as pecans. • Start your day with hot water and lemon after a night of natural detoxification. • Eat as nature intended - meaning eat as little processed foods as possible. • Follow a predominantly vegetarian diet as the majority of vegetarian foods tend to be alkaline. • Choose wholegrains over processed foods every time. • Drink freshly juiced vegetables rather than fruit juices which are quite high in sugars. • Upgrade from cows’ milk to nut milks such as almond milk and hazelnut milk; this will improve your skin’s elasticity.

my clients started asking for my food when they were back home I decided to start a healthy food delivery service, Fridge Fill. With Fridge Fill fast becoming a success we launched the service nationwide and Vicki and I published a book together: Honestly Healthy, Eat With Your Body In Mind, The Alkaline Way, now a best seller which has been translated into seven languages. Our Fridge Fill service uses the best organic vegetables and dishes are not only delicious, but nutritiously balanced. There are three Fridge Fill options which all include breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks from nutty granola with mango kuzu compote to spinach humous and raw crudité, and lemon pearl barley risotto with roasted butternut squash and salad. And the food is all wheat-, gluten-, cows dairy-, sugar- and meat-free. [And recommended by Robbie Williams!]
• Consume alkaline foods that are high in vitamin B3 which will help boost your sense of confidence and self-esteem, such as oats in porridge and flapjacks, spinach, kale and watercress. • Sleep is precious. Eating excessive amounts of acid-forming animal protein at night will interfere with the quality of your sleep. Instead choose alkaline protein sources such as tofu, cashews and feta cheese added to stir-fries, slowcooker casseroles and salads. • Most importantly remember this is a lifestyle so it is 70 per cent following the Honestly Healthy way and 30 per cent letting your hair down. If you look at your week as the overall 100 per cent, three meals represents 30 per cent. Fridge Fill and Honestly Healthy www.honestlyhealthyfood.com
The body functions best when in an alkaline state and much of our 21st century food choices and lifestyle is acid-forming in the body, causing a range of conditions from indigestion and bad breath to kidney and gallstones, IBS, troubled skin and lank hair. Eating a primarily vegetarian programme with an abundance of vegetables, some fruits, grains and pulses, can help to redress the balance of a diet that has consisted predominantly of red meats, dairy produce and alcohol (which are highly acid-forming). The many benefits to eating alkaline food include not only helping you manage your weight and boosting your energy levels, but improved sleep and healthier skin and hair. Some research has even shown alkaline foods can reduce your risk of certain illnesses including cancer. Eating alkaline is not a ‘diet’, but a connection between what we put in our bodies, our health, and our outward appearance. As a general rule, alkaline foods – such as quinoa, lemons, leafy green vegetables and berries – should make up 70 per cent of what we put into our bodies. www.sussexstyle.co.uk

SCOFF & STUFF Our greedy Sussex foodie Sam Bilton on this month’s tastes and treats
Hot Stuff West Dean Chilli Fiesta 9-11 August West Dean Gardens, Chichester www.westdean.org.uk Things will be hotting up in August as West Dean Gardens heads south of the border with its annual Chilli Fiesta. If you want to test your taste buds’ mettle there will be food stalls galore selling spicy treats (plus three bars should the heat get too intense). Celebrity chef Dean Edwards will be among the special guests providing food demonstrations during the show plus there will be an eclectic music lineup to keep you in the party mood. Not too long ago Dean Edwards would have been more at home on a building site than a professional kitchen. But this changed in 2005 when his family and friends persuaded him to enter BBC’s Masterchef. Although Dean narrowly missed out on clinching the Masterchef trophy he secured the opportunity to work in a two Michelin-starred restaurant and then went on to become

resident chef on ITV’s Daybreak and Lorraine. “I am still a massive fan of Masterchef and watch every series,” said Dean. “To this day it remains one of the hardest things I’ve ever done.” The former digger driver’s continuing culinary career success has resulted in the publication of his first cookbook, Mincespiration, earlier this year, with useful recipes transforming this relatively mundane ingredient into inspired meals, including some fairly spicy numbers.
Some like it hot! Fiery Foods Festival 20-22 September Victoria Gardens, Brighton www.fieryfoodsuk.co.uk For those that crave further eyewatering action the Fiery Foods Festival in Brighton will be hosting chilli eating contests and a chilli cook off.
“I love chillies,” said Dean, who confesses to being a little addicted to the kick and heat. “I add chilli to many of the dishes I cook at home. What people forget is that chilli enhances the flavour of a dish. It’s not all about scorching heat.” Dean will be demonstrating chilli themed dishes at the West Dean Chilli Fiesta on Saturday, 10 August: “I love events like this, they give me a chance to meet other food lovers and have a good chat,” said Dean. “I could chat about food all day!”

Taffels, Forest Row
Coffee Break of the Month Taffels, Forest Row It’s rare to find a town in Sussex that doesn’t have at least one multi-chain café on its high street. Forest Row bucks this trend with several independent coffee shops. I particularly like Taffels: a sleek, contemporary café with a convivial vibe. I popped in recently for a substantial brunch of eggs royale, a huge toasted muffin topped with an ample serving of smoked salmon, poached eggs with oozing saffroncoloured yolks and a rich, lemony hollandaise. The bread (which you can also buy in the café) is delivered daily by artisan bakers Flour Power City. If it’s afternoon coffee and cake you’re after, there’s a very tempting selection of cake. Sussex Style foodie Sam Bilton returns to Restaurant Tristan
lmost five years have passed since Tristan mason opened his restaurant in Horsham. During this time he has collected accolades and praise from critics and diners alike. I first visited the restaurant shortly after its opening in 2008 and couldn’t fault the quality of the cooking, but do remember the portions being of nouvelle cuisine proportions. It was the first time I’d left a restaurant after an amuse bouche, three courses, coffee and petit fours and still felt like I had room for a kebab on the way home. Restaurant Tristan has survived and appears to be going from strength to strength and was recently awarded a michelin star for its efforts. I suspect one of the secrets of its success lies in its keen pricing. On a recent visit my friend and I opted for the Select menu (available Tuesday to Saturday lunchtimes and Tuesday to Thursday dinner). as the name suggests it is very succinct with only two choices per course, however, you can’t deny it is excellent value at £18 for two courses or £24 for three. The building itself may be old, but the interior is sleek and modern; the only slight frivolity is the crystal chandelier. Immaculately presented tables with crisply folded napkins, polished glasses and a single rose in a bowl scream

precision without being ostentatious. amuse bouches are something you come to expect of a restaurant carrying a michelin star, so we weren’t surprised to receive one, but were slightly startled by its size. They are normally little soupçons to pique the palate, but our carrot and ham hock velouté garnished with frizzled carrots arrived in a tumbler (rather than a shot glass). For a minute I feared Tristan had gone to the opposite extreme with his portions. The vibrant orange soup seemed to float on top of a bed of shredded ham. It looked thick and filling but was surprisingly light and airy with an almost mousse-like texture although a little on the salty side. We began with the simply stated asparagus, quail’s egg, truffle and cress: the bundle of glistening spears were topped with a tangle of cress, baby salad leaves and asparagus ribbons and rich with the heady aroma of truffles. a green crusted, solitary soft boiled quails egg revealed a golden runny yolk when cut. Wilted wild garlic and crumbled pistachio added a splash of vivid green to a juicy beef rump served with a rich jus. Rump is a cut that is often overlooked in favour of sirloin or fillet but generally packs a lot more flavour. This particular piece, served medium rare, did not disappoint in taste or tenderness. Jerusalem artichokes
served roasted and as delicate crisps added a nice contrast to the soft meat. However the seasoning was a bit heavy handed. So far the portions had been spot on - neither too small, nor too large. I happily proceeded to order my passion fruit soufflé. as grand finales go this would take some beating: perfectly cooked, evenly risen, crisp top liberally dusted with icing sugar and a soft, feather-light inside. Its sweetness was offset by glacial shards of chocolate granita with slightly bitter coffee notes. Our meal was rounded off with coffee and delectable petit fours (blackcurrant jelly, rose scented white chocolate fudge and chocolate and ginger truffles) served in a vintage sweet tin on a bed of coffee beans. It’s little touches like this combined with the excellent food and attentive but unobtrusive service that reinforce why Restaurant Tristan won its first star. Overall, a great place to sample michelin starred cuisine without breaking the bank. Restaurant Tristan, Stans Way, East Street, Horsham 01403 255688 www.restauranttristan.co.uk

READING BETWEEN
THE LINES
By Callum Stannard
Summer time reads made easy
Photo: Sony
W
ith holiday season fast approaching it’s time to select those all-important summer reads. In the past we had to whittle down our holiday choices, relying on the ordained literary wisdom of Richard and Judy to help us choose. The beauty of an e-reader is that you can now take countless books down to the pool without an entourage of book wallahs and extra suitcases. With over 30 models now on offer, however, it can be hard to know which is the best for you. So with shades, sandals and sun screen sorted, I set out to uncover the best buys in e-readers this summer. Amazon Kindle Paperwhite £109 Probably the most popular brand, the Kindle delivers solid all-round performance at a reasonable price. It improves on previous models by adding touch screen, an intelligent lighting system and a ‘time to read’ function that tells you how long it will take to reach the end of the chapter or the whole book. The main drawback is that its storage capacity is less than other e-readers, but at roughly 1,100 books it will probably suffice for most of us! www.amazon.co.uk
Kobo Aura HD £139 A larger and far clearer screen makes the Kobo a smart choice, but this does make it heavier both to your touch and to your finances! That said it does have the capacity for twice the storage of most other competitors, so if you’re looking to transfer a vast library onto your e-reader then the Kobo is definitely one to consider. As the most recent release of the bunch, it’s also the least likely to be eclipsed by anything new. www.kobo.com Sony Reader PRS-T2 £119 The Sony Reader offers the lightest and most compact design of the models featured, making it a good choice for carrying around on your travels this summer. But the notable lack of a back-light function means that when the sun goes in you’ll have to rush to a lamp to finish your chapter. While it does come with a handy stylus for underlining or making notes, you will be paying more for the pleasure. However its superior battery life means you don’t have to cut your holiday short to go in search of a charger. www.sony.co.uk Archos 90 eReader £99 For those of you worried about the transition from book to e-reader, the Archos 90 boasts the largest screen, giving the nearest experience to holding a physical document. Some may find it clunkier and more awkward to carry around, and it’s the only leading model with no touch screen. But it does offer competitive storage capacity and attractive design for a lower price. www.amazon.co.uk www.sussexstyle.co.uk

I always knew what I wanted to do. School days were undoubtedly the easiest days of my life, but I knew what career I wanted to pursue from quite young, and to be honest I just wanted to get out there and start work! As a young child, I had a passion for geology and built up a vast collection of rocks, minerals and gemstones. Becoming a Goldsmith combined this passion with a love of metalwork. I was introduced to the Sir John Cass Faculty of Arts College in East London by a family friend and it was this course that led to an apprenticeship with a well-respected Goldsmith in Hatton Garden. Winning competitions is a rewarding experience. I won the UK Fine Jewellery Competition with a brooch which featured many different shaped stones and skills I was then learning in the trade. The design was set by the competition organisers; we just had to make it the best possible to exacting standards. To win a competition in something you are passionate about is an incredibly rewarding experience. To then go on to represent your country in the World Skills Competition for that skill was mind blowing. The competition was held in Seoul, South Korea. It was one of the toughest things I have ever done. I am proud to
be part of the World Skills Alumni and enjoy giving my time to support and encourage young people to pursue vocational careers. The inspiration is to create one-off items of beauty from totally natural resources. It would be impossible to nominate a favourite piece, although my wife’s engagement ring would be one of them! The most memorable would have to be the Dragonfly Brooch (above) I made as my masterpiece to mark the end of my apprenticeship. Over 200 man-hours of work went into that! Trends can change very quickly, like all fashion items. It is really exciting to keep up with the ever changing designs, although traditional jewellery will always stand the test of time. Semi-precious stones, like aquamarine and tourmaline, have become very popular of late. People are frequently wanting a more contemporary look for their jewellery as well. Palladium is a relatively new metal to be widely used. It is very popular for men’s wedding bands right now. I wear a platinum wedding band, which was made for me by my wife, and an Omega watch.
the Customer’s reaction when I present them with their finished piece. My business dream is to be big enough for my jewellery to be widely known, but still small enough to continue to care about my customers. My favourite time of day is 12 o’clock. That’s when Jeremy Vine comes on radio 2! Outside work I enjoy Taekwondo, walking and good wines! I have based my office in Wivelsfield as it’s very close to home, spending three hours a day travelling to work for 14 years made me realise just how valuable my free time was. I believe in keeping this historic trade alive. I have learned so much in my 18 years at the bench, but I am still learning new things every day. I have just taken on my first apprentice and, like my master did for me, I shall be passing all I know onto him over the forthcoming years. My hope is that he will in turn do the same in years to come in order to keep this historic trade alive. RTFJ handmade bespoke jewellery, Wivelsfield, Haywards Heath 01444 471380 www.rtfj.co.uk

The question is: which car? The top ten convertibles currently competing with each other resemble the line-up of a set of flat race fillies at Chantilly with little to choose from in terms of style and performance. In their own way each is iconic; ultimately it boils down to the colour of your money.
If that is not enough to turn you on, swivel your eyes round to the Mercedes SLK, another classic which takes some beating. Open the throttle and the car surges forward at an alarming speed, and once past 2000 rpm there’s a thunderous roar as the revs rise. The nearest to sex on wheels, except, possibly, for the competition from its even more sophisticated relation, the XL model, with its compact body, cosy cabin and snazzy accessories, and the animal purr of an engine. at well over £100k to put on the road, the Mercedes is beyond the reach of ordinary mortals, but will ensure you god-like status and exclusivity. When considering a convertible car from the female angle, full throttle power is one thing, but immortality is only achievable by keeping one’s hairstyle in place and not freezing to death in the blast of air created as you shoot off into the middle distance. Here the Mercedes SLK wins hands down on both performance and comfort. An air diffuser comes as standard, ensuring protection from the elements. At the same time the air scarf system blows warm air into the cabin at neck level from the head rests guaranteeing topdown driving all year round. The diesel

SLK version is the pick of the range, and its folding metal roof is beautifully engineered, providing all weather protection that other models struggle to compete with. There may be a gap in the price range between this and other convertibles, and on paper the Mercedes looks expensive, but it does come very well equipped. If you fancy a real blast then the Porsche Boxster might take your fancy. It comes in at £22K less than the F Type Jaguar and is the little sister to the Porsche 911. It may not have as much acceleration as the F Type’s V6, and is not as muscular as the 911, but it just needs revving up to hit the road in a matter of seconds and gives the Jag a run for its money. Although smaller than the Jaguar it is more practical in terms of space and organisation. The engine is tucked away down below the roof mechanism, leaving the front bonnet space with decent luggage room as well as the rear. Every control is evenly weighted and its steering is slower and more confident and it may well appeal to the girl racer
in you because of its more compact body. At £45,000 on the road the Boxster is, according to Top Gear’s Sam Philip, the best sports car you can buy. If you are casting your eye around still further then you cannot overlook the Audi A5 Cabriolet; the A5’s classic image makes it a real contender in the satisfaction stakes. Add to this a top quality interior, solid construction and an efficient engine that keeps the running costs down so that, although pricey, the popular diesel version promises 57.6 mpg and its competitive fuel emission ratio places it in a lower road tax band. There is a more powerful V6 petrol engine and there are several gearbox alternatives, six-speed manual or seven- or eight-speed automatic, but the mid spec SE models offer the best balance of kit and value. All have a generous 320 litre boot size and the option to carry passengers in the rear, unlike many of its competitors, with further boot space when the split level rear seats are folded. However the Audi does not come with some essential kit

TALKING POINT Put down that phone, suggests Emma Piper
I
loathe the mobile phone, iPhone, smart phone, or whatever you call it. There I’ve said it.
For me it all came to a head the other week over the dispute between a cashier and customer in Sainsbury’s that burst unexpectedly into the national press, with all of us seemingly taking one side or the other - mostly, it transpires, the side of the cashier. It was reported that the assistant refused to serve the customer until she came off her mobile phone. The customer, Jo Clarke, apparently told the assistant she had no right to give her a lecture on checkout etiquette and complained to Sainsbury’s, who apologised and offered her vouchers in way of compensation. This incident has triggered a storm of protest on the internet with most people supporting the shop assistant and criticising Sainsbury’s for not standing by her. Having friends and family working in retail, I am aware there is nothing quite so dispiriting as serving someone who talks on their phone through the entire transaction without making eye contact and without acknowledgement. In such circumstances assistants usually enjoy the view from the moral high ground and thank them and wish them a good day whether they are listening or not, marking such customers down as downright rude (along with those who leave changing rooms in the same disarray you would expect from a pubescent girl, with clothes and

hangers strewn everywhere. Do they regard assistants as their upaid servants or their mothers? But this is probably a different talking point piece.) What I am concerned about is whether this is just the beginning. The mobile phone is changing etiquette not just at the till, but at the dining table and in the restaurant, café and pub, too. I’ve often viewed a table of diners all busily texting away on their phones and not communicating with each other. We have a generation coming up who seem increasingly disconnected from the world around them. I’m told the phone and the internet is all about interconnectivity… Wasn’t it the prescient Douglas Adams who said ‘Only Connect’ and prophesied the smart phone in his Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy? But have we ended up creating a generation who can ‘talk’ to virtual ‘friends’ in cyberspace more easily than the person across the table? In my experience they appear less capable of interaction in the real world – sometimes at their own risk. I have had young people (and not so young) on phones or wearing headphones walk out into the road in front of me when I’ve been cycling along and even when I’ve been driving, on at least one occasion totally oblivious as I have braked and manoeuvred around them. So what is a cashier spurned if they don’t value their own lives? And Sainsbury’s (and other supermarkets) haven’t helped by undermining the acceptable standards of ‘service’ with

their self-service tills ‘manned’ by a patronising female voice admonishing me because I’m not quick enough to remove my card or fill my bags. (I am the mad woman ranting at the machine – you may have seen me.) We can’t turn back the clock, but how I wish people would turn off their phones more. Don’t they enjoy their own company? Don’t they need to think? I love the peace and thrive in the space beyond the phone and the computer that gives me the opportunity to think, wonder, plan, write, communicate, listen and observe my environment. My worry is that everyone is so busy talking and texting no one is actually listening and thinking. And yes, when at the till, may I suggest we switch off our phones and engage with the cashier? Daniel Raven talks weirdos
B
righton is for weirdos. Everyone seems to know this; I once spoke to a middleaged man in the Cotswolds who told me that it was a town full of ‘unthinkable’ people (but didn’t think to tell me exactly what kind of unthinkable behaviour he was thinking of ). In the olden days this may simply have been because the weirdos couldn’t afford the train back to london after spending all their money on magic beans, amateur dramatics etc, but in the modern era it’s more a case of them being drawn to Brighton by its reputation as an ‘alternative lifestyle mecca’. This is both a good and a bad thing, because there are good and bad kinds of weird. When weird is good it can be startling, glorious, exhilarating – like John Cleese in his heyday, or Count arthur Strong now – but when it’s bad it can be almost life-blightingly disheartening – like michael Barrymore in his heyday, or John Cleese now. Brighton has more than its fair share of both kinds. On the good side, the fact that there’s so much less pressure in Brighton to grow up and get a ‘real’ job has supplied us with a slew of sublimely skewed writers, artists, musicians and film makers over the years, and continues to do so now. (For instance if you haven’t yet seen any of Ben Wheatley’s films that’s very much something I’d recommend considering – they do get a bit gory, though!) But it has also yielded us a bumper crop of middle-aged men on skateboards/

weird little scooters and deluded individuals who believe that having once used a roll of black and white film entitles them to answer the question ‘and what do you do?’ with ‘I’m a photographer’; not to mention Simon Fanshawe. It’s basically about the difference between seeing an extraordinarily talented opera singer, violinist or jazz musician busking on a street corner, and feeling genuinely privileged that you just happened to happen by, and finding a boozed-up bongo-basher in the same spot the next day and thinking ‘Why can’t you just leave us all the hell alone?’
When weird is good it can be startling, glorious, exhilarating – like John Cleese in his heyday, or Count Arthur Strong now – but when it’s bad it can be almost life-blightingly disheartening – like Michael Barrymore in his heyday, or John Cleese now
and then there’s the now-annual zombie parade, which looks like it should be good-weird on paper (because, come on, it’s zombies!), but actually turns out to be very badweird indeed when you actually see it happen or hear any of its participants going on about how hilarious it is (something, incidentally, that tends to be a key indicator of bad weirdness).
