Description Approaches to the management of sustainable tourism vary considerably across the UK, and exhibit a distinct ‘regional geography’ reflecting overall nature, form and function of tourism in different localities. The aim of this module is to build on the introductory modules at Level 4, and provide students with an opportunity to look at more distinct regional tourism geographies and approaches to sustainable tourism. The module will be based around a series of introductory lectures and a week’s residential fieldtrip in the UK. This module will provide consolidation at Level 1, by which time students will have developed an appreciation of the tourism industry and related sustainability issues in the UK at a local, regional and national level. The fieldtrip will also introduce wider themes discussed in Levels 5 and 6 of the BA (Hons) Sustainable Tourism Management programme through field investigation and visits. Outline Syllabus & Teaching & Learning Methods This module is primarily centred around a week’s residential fieldtrip to a part of the UK for example Devon and Cornwall or the Brecon Beacons.

In preparation for the trip, students will be asked to participate in a number of introductory seminar

discussions that consider the key themes and locations that are going to be considered on the fieldtrip. The residential fieldtrip will be based around a programme of visits to selected sites, incorporate on-site speakers or tours. The fieldtrip will attempt to highlight the contrasts between mass tourism destinations such as seaside resorts, and urban/rural destinations, and provide insights into aspects of tourism development such tourism impacts and sustainability, destination and site management and marketing through exposure to real life examples. In addition, students will have the opportunity to investigate the specific nature of sustainable tourism development through a series of fieldwork activities, which will allow student to apply and evaluate basic fieldwork techniques explored at Level 4. The precise module content will of course depend on the location of the residential fieldtrip and it is intended that the location will change over the course of the programme. However, using Devon and Cornwall as an example, the key themes covered could include: n

Sustainable Attractions: The Eden Project, Paignton Zoo

n

Managing Seaside Resorts: Torbay, Looe, Newquay

n

Rural Tourism: Dartmoor National Park

n

Waterfront regeneration and sustainability: Plymouth

n

Heritage Management: Historic houses (e.g. Saltram House)

n

Sustainable Tourism: Dartmoor National Park, South Hams

Assessment Scheme: Formative Fieldwork activities and debrief sessions will provide students with advice and guidance on aspects of their assessment. Assessment Scheme: Summative (i) Individual infographic (40%) (750 word equivalent) which reflects a specific theme or topic covered during the course of the fieldtrip.

[*A degree of flexibility is in-built into the assessment regime, as the exact nature of the fieldwork activities and the final nature of the poster presentation and report will depend on the location of the fieldtrip and the sites that are visited. The trip will reflect regional tourism developments therefore different case studies may be used each year, and it is also envisaged that the trip may use a variety of regional destinations over the life of the programme]
