FINALLY*

read the above in a sarcastic tone. yes, congratulations for finally moving out from your humble studio abode.

Outside the cold concrete walls of the Dewan Tunku Canselor, eagerness surrounded everyone an everything, to celebrate the graduates of 2012. Convocation, according to the unversity’s tradition is also one of the loudest events on campus. I wonder how everything responds to this. Is DTC smiling because once a year, graduates and parents would fill its huge cavity? Sooner or later, any moment now, DTC will vomit thousands of happy faces who finally received their scrolls of excellence. What would an ant think about this? “The ground vibrated without tolerance or hesitation. It was an earthquake! The collateral disturbances they usually make were tolerable but this time booming thunders flushed the atmosphere with incomprehensible boisterousness! It was... them again. Their aggregation is further disturbing the colony’s process in rebuilding the hill. This “convocation” is nothing more but a rain of luminous oddments that block our paths! Our horizon was bombarded between the shuffling of bustling human feet dancing to Mambo No. 5 just to make it worse. Eh, if you could call it dancing!? Oh Lord, have mercy on the colony and these dancing buffoons.”

THE STUDIO BINOCULARS Is it a set of repetitive lines? Is it a checkered flag? Is it a mirror set against a picture? Nahh, it’s just first year students. The lines under their zombie ridden eyes, forming patterns of both sleepiness and excitement of finally finishing their first module of their architecture journey. The first glimpses of these zombies were when they shared studio with us for presentation. On one side of the hall were dialogues of urban analysis and the back alleys of Chow Kit, and on the other side strolling zombies around intricate ornaments - that they probably sacrificed their sleep for last night. It must be hard adapting to this new studio lifestyle and the roller coaster ride of architecture school. But alas, they’ve prevailed as one of the batches that has survived the new module. The module that is more elaborate compared to the old linear, planar and hybrid formula. They had to produce a number of grid and geometry pieces in 2D, followed by pattern and textures in 3D. Led by their new studio master, Pn. Mazidah, they have never ceased to surprise us just yet. If this is only their first module, I sense an apocalypse coming soon. -Huda recalling the zombies in Studio 3

PETER COOK WAS IN KUALA LUMPUR. YES. HE WAS. He shared with us his insights of the small nooks and crannies that make up architecture. built or not. His idea of an interesting design includes sillyness, fascination, and linkage. A designer has to always explore new ideas. A word of advice from Sir Peter Cook:

Always question the notion.

*this sketchbook spread takes a look into the ideas that took place at the time of the talk.

CURIOCITY

-Faez reporting from Studio 2

one utama, 2012 – As written on the label “The city acts and responds as a living modular unit of development and changes. These enhancements can bring about natural events whether good or bad effects, such as climate change, urban sprawl and socio-culture variation. It is in the architect’s responsibility to show the way and light up the possibilities for a better city. That is why we as students choose to symbolize our part in our city change in these boxes of curious ideas that we’ve explored in school. The boxes tell of our ideas encased in modular units such as the city that grows in different stages of modular units as well. The hierarchy of the changing boxes reveals the architect’s responsibility to control design in terms of orientation, firmness, transparency, stability and sustainability. The bulb lights up ideas, putting our idea ecosystem idea under a protective light like an incubator. The mirror speaks about the layers and layers of ideas that we depend on to make designs work today, in reflection of the past and to mirror the future.”

Thank you to the hardworking committee and enthusiastic supportes who helped out for the exhibition this year :) Dualisma, next!

Hence we brought our idea to the PAM Exhibition on October 9 to be displayed until October 13 at One Utama Shopping Centre; alongside other architecture schools, namely UIA, UTM, Taylor’s University and many more. The installation gained 3rd place among other schools.

We have built and we are still building our own curiocity. Thinking forward and beyond the imagination of an average student. Here, we managed to catch an outstanding cube project. The big idea started with a primitive and ruin concept; this designer studied how the primitive people succeeded in developing simple shapes into complex design. Not only that, he also applied the emotional side into his design and played with human mood and symbolism. For his cubes, he created interesting small paths in order to incorporate feeling the journey into spaces. The starting point of this design revolves around the depression mood, in which the space starts small. The hierarchy begins at the lowest part of composition and this continues on a path to a scenic point of view, where the space is not confined and is open to the surrounding. The mood then changes as the path links to the first cube.

Project: Dynamic of Cube Concept: Human Mood Swings deciphered via cubes Duration: 1 week Current Stage: Submitted

The complexity of the first cube resembles a memory box where it allows one to recall memories by looking at the details inside: the big circular hole on top of the cube. The journey to the second cube is more interesting, even though it is a lot simpler. This designer used the idea of puncturing the wall to let in some light to give a spiritual mood to the space. This is inspired by Louis Kahn’s design.

Murder by Crit Session?

What killed Ajiq? .I

C.S

It was 9:00 am in the morning. The cool breeze whistled past the walkways and corridors of the new Faculty of Built Environment, accompanying the pale grey sky. Sights of people rushing and hustling to class can be seen from the new building. The new auditorium lobby seems serene… too serene. The spacious semi-open area has been set up for the third year students to have their interim crit for their latest project. In the last minute, Taofee the class rep had a message from Prof XX saying that they were to shift to the exhibition hall A on the floor above. By 10:00 am the students came up to the hall to pin up their works. 10:15 am, a loud thud was heard, everyone was stunned for a moment or two. No one knew where the sound came from. It went off again for a few times. Lost and confused, the only rational thing to do was find the source of the sound. They blindly searched everywhere. Because now it is just too early for any activities of the “you-know-what” to attack. They only attack at night lah weh! Meanwhile, Cha was late for the interim crit. He rushed up to the Studio 3 to grab his lucky pins and ran down the stairs, because the elevator was just too slow. He jogged with his set of printed drawings and

models held by both hands. He was heading for the lobby, thinking whether he can make it in time. Unfortunately, he tripped on the uneven tiles, making him drop the whole case of his favourite white pins. “Oh damn! Not now!” he shouted to himself while picking up the pins one by one. Sahaq was behind him and stopped by to help. As he was picking up the last pin, he paused. He looked at the tile attentively, “Woi, what is that?” Sahaq and Cha didn’t even exchange looks. They never recalled a broken tile in this new building before. Cha carefully looked around, unsure of what he was looking for. Sahaq pointed out a brute drag mark that led to one of the lifts nearby. He walked towards the lift. Cha left his drawings and pins on the floor. Curious, yet scared, Sahaq took a deep breath and pressed the lift button, thinking of the many possibilities that he might find behind the lift doors. Maybe it’s a blood hungry banshee behind the doors, ready to attack him. It could be anything. Before their mind could wander even more, the doors open. Cha then projected a high pitched scrream that almost sounded like a little girl’s shrill, astonished at the sight he found behind the lift doors....

Which stage are you at now? Comic by Cici & Kubi This victim was spotted during the Architecture’s flash mob during the convocation. Loving the colours on ya, hun, but not so on the corduroy jacket. I mean, it’s nice and all, but ain’t it too hot to be worn under the sun for a flash mob? Even wearing a light tee can produce a set of ketibas when jumping around at a flash mob, let alone this thick jacket. But all in all, liking the colours, and gotta love the prints on the scarf,
