Year 11 Week on the Wildside December 2014 Options 25th August 2014 Dear Year 11 Students and Parents, During the 2014 Week on the Wildside we will be offering three trips that the Year 11 students may undertake: Option 1 – Additional Parental Contribution

Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award for Young People (IYA) Silver Level – Nam Wa River Descent Once again we will take a group of students to the Nam Wa River in Nan Province for their Silver level Qualifying Expedition for the International Award for Young People. The trip will be led by NIST staff with White Water Rafting expedition experience and personal knowledge of the area, along with staff from The Wild Planet who are experienced providers of expeditions like this. The expedition section is a key part of the Award: At each level it involves some compulsory training and one assessment expedition. This venture consists of a 1 day trek to and from the Queens Phu Fa project along with 3 days white water rafting, incorporating a range of camp craft activities, where students will provide in groups their food, along with all of its preparation/cooking. We are able to offer Two trips this Year. Each trip with a maximum of 28 students, (56 in total) supported by 4 NIST Staff. The trips will take place during WOWS week of the evening of: Friday 12th – the morning of Friday 19th December 2014. The parental cost for the expedition is B8500. This is inclusive of the Day’s compulsory training, which will be based at The White Water Slalom Course – Nakon Nayok on Sunday 12th October depart NIST @0600 by school vans – to Nakhon Nayok, returning on Sunday 12th October by 1730hrs

Please note that if for any reason the expedition is cancelled The Wild Planet activity company will retain a small percentage which would have been spent on expedition logistics and deposits for train fares. If you would like your son/daughter to participate in this expedition please return the form below along with payment to the cashiers Office. Please note that we can ONLY take 40 students on the trip - first come first served. Payments can be made at the Cashiers Office from 0700 on Tuesday 26th August 2014.


The Duke of Edinburg’s International Award The Award Scheme is divided into a number of strands as shown below. Each strand is of equal importance. Students, who enrol into the award scheme, will gather and show their evidence via an Electronic Log Book.

Option 2 – Additional Parental Contribution

Khao Sok Jungle Survival Skills A unique trip that we are looking to run this December -5 days/4 nights – with 3 nights in the amazing Khao Sok National Park staying on a floating Bamboo Bungalow. Activities include Closed Cockpit Kayaking, to access the flora/fauna and view the wildlife of this beautiful park, and cave experience. Each day of the four days has a different focus on Jungle Survival skills, such as: water,

fire, using a knife, traveling safely on rough terrain, making natural rope, water from vines, wild edible plants, making shelter and survival fishing. This trip is run in conjunction with Paddle Asia, SE Asia’s leading providers of Jungle/Bush craft skills This Trip departs on the early hours of Monday 15t h December – late evening on Thursday 18th. Students will fly in and out of Phuket and transfer by Minivans to the Khao Sok reservoir If you would like your son/daughter to participate in this expedition please return the form below along with payment to the cashier’s office. Please note that we can ONLY take 18 students on this trip - first come first served. Payments can be made at the Cashiers Office from 0700 on Tuesday 26th August 2014. COST B8500.


Option 3: NO Parental Contribution Required

Kanchanaburi Adventure Challenge Four Days/Three Nights accommodated in a 2* level resort. During this Week on the Wildside trip, students will be engaged in a variety of outdoor adventure activities, which will concluded with an Amazing Race style event. Activities that will be undertaken include: Cycle Skills Training, Target Archery, Team Leadership skills, A full days trek incorporating micro navigation, half a day’s Sit on Top Kayak= Descent of the Kwai Noi river, half a day’s Mountain Bike Ride and the final Amazing Race. Monday 15th – Thursday 18th December 2014. No Charge for the Kanchanaburi Challenge. No action required at present. If there are any questions about the trips, please contact Mr Wardle at the school.
