Who are 2012 Top 100 Retailers according to Stores.org The annual ranking of the Top 100 Retailers for the year 2012 was released in July 2012. The list specifically includes the top US-based retailers, so no surprises if one does not find top European retailers like Carrefour and the Metro Group in the ranking.

At the time when the global economy is not doing very well in terms of growth, and the consumer spending has been constrained, retailers are taking strategic steps to sustain themselves. They are indulging in diverse strategic decisions to change the business model such as move from brick and mortar to online (or both), become small format store from a large format store, change from domestic focus and move to international opportunities, and so on. All these strategies are perceived to help in bringing about a change and add to the operational performance of the retailers, and / or add to the topline. At an overall level, in the 2012 rankings, the world’s largest retailer and discounter Wal-Mart (1st) has retained its top spot in 2012 as well. Wal-Mart was followed by Kroger (2 nd), Target (3rd) and the Walgreens (4th) who all retained their respective spots of 2011 in 2012 too. In the top 10 rankings, Costco (5 th) jumped one place up from 6 th position in 2011, pushing down The Home Depot (6th) one place. Safeway (10th) supermarkets marked its entry in the top 10 by moving up one spot in 2012. Under the pharmacies and drug stores category, Walgreens (4th) and CVS Caremark (7th) were found to be categorized under the top 10 retailers in 2012. Both of them have retained their 2011 spots. Coming to the home improvement category, the top three retailers of 2012 were The Home Depot (6 th), Lowes (8th) and Menard (48th). Lowes and Menard were positioned at 8 th and 46th respectively in 2011. Similarly, electronics retailers Best Buy (9th) and Apple Stores/iTunes (21 st) were not far behind, as they both retained their 2011 spots. Apparel retailer Macy’s (16th) was pushed down one level in 2012 as compared to its 15 th spot in 2011. Similarly, JC Penny (23 rd) lost one level to TJX (22nd) in 2012. TJX jumped two places up in 2012 from 24 th position in 2011.

Toys “R� Us (46th) was the only toy retailer that made in the list despite losing 9 places in 2012. Whereas, the foodservice category hosted a mixed performance, with McDonalds (11 th) gaining 6 places and Yum Brands (25 th) losing 2 places in 2012. Lastly, the online retailer Amazon.com (15 th) has gone 4 levels up in 2012, proving the growing consumer preference with online shopping over brick and mortar stores in the US.
