At Sutton High it is a priority to extend the process of learning beyond the classroom and find ways to inspire, excite and enthuse our girls through a rich programme of clubs and activities, both before school, at lunchtime and after school. These clubs and activities give our girls the opportunity to experience a range of skills and qualities which add to their enjoyment, promote their academic achievements and prepare them for life beyond school. Clubs change from term to term, however there is always a wide range to choose from. This booklet provides an overview of the variety of activities on offer across the different areas of the Senior School. In addition there is an extensive range of trips and residential visits for girls in every year group. The programme of extra-curricular clubs and activities for the current term can be found in the Clubs & Societies section on Firefly. The programme of trips and residential visits for 2016 — 2018 can be found in the Trips & Events section on Firefly.

YEARS 10 — 13 AUTUMN TERM, TUESDAYS, LUNCHTIME 1.40 — 2.10PM ROOM G23, MR PARKINS / MRS PEEL

In the Autumn Term, the English Department will run a combined debating and public speaking club for upper school students. Through participation in short debates within the club, the girls will pit their wits against each other to build their research skills and their ability to structure arguments effectively. They will also have the opportunity to develop their confidence and proficiency in delivering speeches in front of an audience, an immensely important life skill. As well as internal events, such as house debating, club members will also participate in external competitions, including the ESU Mace debating competition and the GDST Crystal Prize for Public Speaking.

Young Reporters YEARS 9 — 13 SPRING TERM, TUESDAYS, LUNCHTIME 1.40 — 2.10PM ROOM G23, MRS PEEL / MRS HARVEY

Students will have the opportunity to put their sleuthing skills into practice in the Young Reporters club, which will run in Spring Term. Those who participate will independently gather information, interview witnesses, and write and edit their own news reports. The girls will explore current events and report on the issues which affect them the most. Following the Guardian Young Reporters scheme and BBC School Report, students will also develop their editorial, ICT and filming skills.

Creative writing YEARS 7 — 13 ALL YEAR, THURSDAYS, LUNCHTIME 1.40 — 2.10PM ROOM G22, ALL ENGLISH TEACHERS

Literature allows us to experience a thousand different lives; writing enables us to own them. In a new creative writing club, students will explore their imaginations and develop the tools to capture their ideas on paper. The club will aim to get students writing in a range of different forms, sharing created pieces with others and developing their ability to reflect effectively. In the Summer Term, the best pieces of writing will be collected together and possibly published in a Sutton High Anthology.

YEAR 12 NOVEMBER — JULY, TUESDAYS, LUNCHTIME 1.45 — 2PM ROOM BLACK, MRS YAMIN

We will meet to discuss the committee’s ideas for their school magazine — covering topics such as themes, layout, cover design, style, content and target audience. This is a chance for Year 12 girls to show the breadth of their skills and talents, working in a team environment to create a magazine that celebrates the achievements and activities of girls at Sutton High School during the year. Applications and interviews for the role of school magazine editor, as well as positions on the committee, will take place during September of Year 12.
