The Centrum When Southern Utah University’s 5,300seat Centrum was completed in 1985, it was hoped the state-of-the art facility would push the Thunderbirds to the highest levels of collegiate sports.

Clearly, those hopes are being fulfilled.

During the 26 seasons the Thunderbirds have played in the building it has been an inhospitible venue for visiting teams. The Thunderbirds have won 258 of 343 games in the building, a winning percentage of 75.2.

The Centrum was a key factor in SUU’s jump to the NCAA Division I ranks in 1988 and played a large role in Southern Utah’s bid to join the Summit League, and its more recent move to the Big Sky. Since opening in November of 1985, the Centrum has attracted thousands of people to Cedar City for Thunderbird sports, concerts and numerous other athletic, academic and performing arts events.

The Utah Jazz have twice called the Centrum home for fall training camp and each year the Centrum is the centerpiece venue for the Utah Summer Games.

The facility – which covers six acres and cost just over $8 million to build – is part of the Sharwan Smith Center, which houses the SUU Bookstore, Grand Ballroom, food services, and all of the student services offices. The concourse of the Centrum houses studios for SUTV and Power 91 – SUU’s television and radio stations – the basketball offices, academic offices and numerous classrooms and art studios.

2013-14 SOUTHERN UTAH OUTLOOK 2013-14 Thunderbird Schedule

Youth will be served this season as Coach Nick Robinson leads a young group of Thunderbirds into their second season in the Big Sky conference in his second year at the helm of the SUU program.

The team, which returns six letter-winners and adds six scholarship newcomers and four walk-ons, has just four upperclassmen, two seniors and two juniors, with four sophomores and six freshmen. All totalled the Thunderbirds enter the season with just nine seasons of Division I experience on the roster.

The returning lettermen include the two seniors, center Jayson Cheesman and forward Jaren Jeffery, while the juniors are center Cal Hanks and guard Chris Nsenki. Sophomores wing A.J. Hess and guard Drake Thomas also return.

Cheesman started 30 games last season when he led the team with 60 blocks – the second-highest single-season total in school history – and averaged 6.8 points and 6.0 rebounds per game. Jeffery started 29 games and averaged 3.5 points and 3.3 rebounds.

Hess started the final six games of the 2012-13 season and finished with averages of 5.8 points and 2.6 rebounds per game but while he was in the starting lineup those averages improved to 9.3 points and 5.0 boards.

Hanks blocked 36 shots while averaging 3.6 points and 3.0 rebounds while Nsenki averaged 2.3 points and 1.2 assists.

Both came off the bench in every game.

Thomas appeared in 19 games and averaged 0.1 points and 0.4 rebounds per game.

“We have six returners and each of them did a great job through the summer as well as through the fall in terms of improving on their individual skills,” Robinson said. “We’ve seen great leadership from all of them in different ways and will have three captains this year: Jayson Cheesman, Jaren Jeffery and Chris Nsenki.

“With it being a new year we expect our leadership from those returners to improve and we expect their play on the court to improve as well,” the coach went on to say. “We’ve got a lot of guys that need to step up to fill the gaps from last year, both defensively and offensively.”

The newcomers include forwards McKay Anderson and Casey Oliverson and guards Trey Kennedy, Juwan Major, John Marshall and Race Parsons. All but Oliverson, a sophomore, are incoming freshmen.

“We have six incoming scholarship players and four new walkons for a total of 10,” Robinson pointed out. “I really like the character of this group, I like their enthusiasm and I like the

versatility that this group brings to our basketball program. I think the youthful energy will be exciting for our fans to see.

“Each of the incoming guys is going to have opportunities early to play and to compete at a high level. We expect all of them to make a solid transition from high school or junior college to the Division I level. “

Anderson was a two-time all-CIF second-team selection at LaVerne (Calif.) Lutheran HS where he averaged 10.5 points last season. Oliverson, a graduate of Smithfield’s Sky View HS, comes to SUU from Salt Lake Community College where he averaged 8.2 points and 4.9 rebounds last season on the Bruins’ Scenic West Conference championship team.

Kennedy and Major were both Las Vegas, Nev. preps, with Kennedy coming to SUU from Bishop Gorman High and Major from Las Vegas High. Kennedy averaged 12.7 points, 6.3 rebounds and 4.7 assists last year while Major averaged 14.2, 5.1 and 3.0 en route to being named his region’s co-MVP last season.

Marshall spent last season at Westwind Prep in Phoenix, Ariz., where he averaged 12.1 points and 4.7 assists on a team that went 25-11 playing a nation-wide schedule, while Parsons was a three-time all-stater and two-time Utah 2A MVP at South Sevier HS where he averaged 27 points and 8.8 rebounds per game as a senior.

The 2013-14 walk-ons include Peter Barrus, Eric Rippetoe (who spent a redshirt season at SUU in 2010-11 before playing the last two seasons at Western Wyoming JC), Taylor Jenson and Thomas Tebbs. Barrus is slated to redshirt this season.

At point guard the Thunderbirds have Thomas returning after playing a reserve role last year, and both Marshall and Kennedy will see plenty of action as true freshmen. In the early going all three will share minutes to see who emerges in the starting role.

“We’ve got Drake Thomas as a returning point guard and incoming point guards John Marshall and Trey Kennedy,” Robinson noted. “With the point guard position it’s been extremely competitive through our first practices. I feel that each point guard is different and brings something unique to the court.

“Drake has been a lot more consistent this year,” Robinson added. “He worked exCenters (3) tremely hard in the off-season #34 Cal Hanks and he’s done a nice job of #44 Peter Barus playing hard through [early] #50 Jayson Cheesman practices. Trey also brings a winning mentality and has a command of what we want to do as a basketball team, offensively and defensively. John Marshall has a very physical presence as well as great competitive energy at both ends of the

court.”

Nsenki and Major are both combo guards who can play either the point or on the wing whose strength is their ability to defend.

“We have a couple of guards who can play either at the point or at shooting guard, Chris Nsenki and Juwan Major,” Robinson pointed out. “Both Chris and Juwan defend at a very high rate at multiple positions – both the point guard and shooting guard – as well as the small forward spots. Both have ability to play in transition. Chris has improved his range and shooting ability and he does a nice job of slashing. Juwan has the ability to get to the basket and his mid-range game is a strength offensively but the strength of both those guys is their ability to defend multiple positions.”

The shooters at the wing will primarily be Hess, Parsons and Anderson. Hess and Parsons have shown the ability to fill up the basket in high school and Hess made a smooth transition to the collegiate level last year, while although Anderson can also shoot the ball he brings athleticism and a defensive presence.

“A.J., with a year of experience and a great summer, has really improved his feel for the wing position, whether that’s at the shooting guard or the small forward spot,” Robinson explained.

“He’s become better defensively, he’s improved his pace offensively and we expect him to be aggressive like all of our guys given his experience.

“Race is extremely aggressive at the shooting guard spot and has the capability to score in bunches but needs to be more consistent,” the coach noted.

“McKay brings a defensive presence and more athleticism to the

wing position and has shown offensive sparks both from behind the arc as well as being able to get to the rim” Robinson said.

“Collectively, at the wing I feel – as with all of our perimeter players – we’ve improved our athleticism as well as our strength.,” he added.

Up front the team returns three players with good experience and one newcomer with great potential. Jeffery started all but two games at the power forward position last year and he has worked to improve his game in the off-season, while Oliverson is a good athlete who will be looked to for contribution early. In the post Cheesman made an instant impact after joining the team last year. He was the only player to start every game last season while Hanks came off the bench in each game and has continued to improve his game since arriving at SUU in the fall of 2010.

“I’ve been pleased with the progress of our post play at both the forward and the center positions,” Robinson said. “I feel like we’ve got needed depth as well as guys who can play in multiple spots.

“Jaren continues to be tough defensively but has greatly improved his offensive pace in the off-season,” the coach noted.

“We expect, as a captain, Jaren to help lead our team this season.

“Casey brings strength and athleticism to the front-court and has a great knack or rebounding at both ends of the court,” Robinson added.

“We expect Cal to continue to improve at the pace he did last year. He has improved his physical strength dramatically and that has helped him defensively.

road for a pair of match-ups, at Portland on Dec. 1 and Cal State Northridge on Dec. 3.

The team then takes a short hiatus for final examinations before returning to the court Dec. 14 with a home game against UNLV. Following the game against the Rebels the ‘Birds take to the road to wrap up the non-conference portion of the schedule with games at San Diego State (Dec. 18) and San Diego (Dec. 21).

After a 10-day holiday break the team departs on New Year’s Day for the Big Sky opener at UND on Jan. 2, followed by a game at Northern Colorado on Jan. 4.

The Big Sky home-opener is Saturday, Jan. 11 when Sacramento State visits the Centrum, with Northern Arizona coming to town the following Monday.

Defending Big Sky champion Montana visits the Centrum Jan. 30, while Montana State is in town Feb. 1.

A game with in-state rival Weber State on Feb. 13 begins the longest home-stretch of the season, four games, which includes match-ups with Idaho State (Feb. 15), Portland State (Feb. 20) and Eastern Washington (Feb. 22).

The regular-season wraps up with a pair of double-headers with the SUU women’s team. Both T-Bird squads will host Northern Colorado on March 6, and North Dakota on March 8.

“Jayson is one of our two seniors. He’s improved offensively in the off-season and we expect him to have a presence in the paint at both ends of the floor this year. “

The Big Sky tournament, which is hosted by the regular-season champion, tips off March 13.

The Schedule: Fourteen home games – including match-ups against UNLV and UC Riverside – highlight the schedule, while the road slate includes contests at Utah State, California, San Diego State and a pair of West Coast Conference teams. The Thunderbirds will also face each Big Sky Conference opponent both at home and on the road.

“Including our exhibition we’ve got four home games in November and December and we’re excited about the opportunity to have the students, the community and all our fans supporting us here in the Centrum,” Robinson said. “Our non-conference schedule includes four or five potential NCAA tournament teams and each team is very different and will be great preparation for our conference schedule.”

The T-Birds open the quest for their first-ever Big Sky championship at North Dakota on Jan. 2 but warm up for the conference schedule with an ambitious non-conference slate of games, beginning with an exhibition contest in Cedar City against LaVerne University on Nov. 2.

Following the match-up with LaVerne the T-Birds host Arizona Christian on Nov. 8, in the first official game of the season before traveling to Utah State (Nov. 12) and Cal (Nov. 18).

The first Division I home game comes Nov. 23 when the Thunderbirds host UC Riverside in the Centrum, then they hit the

NICK ROBINSON HEAD COACH

STANFORD, 2005 SECOND SEASON AT SOUTHERN UTAH Nick Robinson took the reins of Southern Utah’s men’s basketball program on March 29, 2012, becoming the eighth head men’s basketball coach in the school’s four-year history.

During his first season at SUU Coach Robinson helped usher the Thunderbirds into the Big Sky era, coaching the team to a sixth place finish and a playoff berth in its first season in the conference. Last year the Thunderbirds finished the season ranked among the nation’s top 100 teams in blocked shots (30th with 5.0 per game), free throw percentage (73rd, .724) and rebounding margin (88th, plus-3.0) and also became the first Big Sky team to win its first three league games in its first season in the conference since Boise State turned the trick back in 1970-71.

Two of Robinson’s players, Jackson Stevenett and Damon Heuir, earned all-Big Sky honors in 2012-13 after ranking second and third in the conference in scoring, with Stevenett also ranking 67th in the nation in scoring (17.6 ppg) and 27th in free throw percentage (.867). A third Thunderbird, Jayson Cheesman, finished the season 62nd in the NCAA with 1.94 blocks per game and his 60 last year are the secondmost in a season at SUU. The team also excelled in the classroom as the Thunderbirds earned a spot on the NABC’s Academic Excellence Team and placed four individuals on the NABC Honors Court based on their academic accomplishments.

A 2005 graduate of Stanford University, Robinson came to SUU from Louisiana State University, where he spent three seasons on the staff. Prior to his time at LSU Robinson served a season on the staff at William Jewell College and two seasons as an assistant coach at Stanford.

During his time as an assistant coach, Robinson helped guide his teams to a combined record of 87-47 and four post-season appearances, including two NCAA, one NIT and one NAIA Division I national tournaments.

At LSU Robinson served as assistant coach, director of basketball operations and as executive assistant to the head coach on Coach Trent Johnson’s staff, acting one season in each capacity.

Robinson’s coaching responsibilities included working with player development, on-the-floor coaching, recruiting, game preparation and opponent scouting.

As a member of Coach Larry Holley’s staff at William Jewell in 2008-09, Robinson helped the Cardinals to a 23-11 record and an appearance in the NAIA national tournament while working with all aspects of the program.

Prior to joining the staff at William Jewell, Robinson was an assistant under Johnson at Stanford from 2006 to 2008, where he worked with recruiting, opponent scouting, game-preparation and player development while also working as a position coach with the Cardinal forwards.

At Stanford, Robinson helped coach the team to NCAA tournament berths in both 2007 and 2008, including a Sweet 16 appearance in 2008 when the team finished second in the Pac-10 at 13-5 with a

He also helped mentor current and future NBA players Brook Lopez, Robin Lopez and Landry Fields at Stanford, and Justin Hamilton at LSU. Coach Robinson also spent one season as a volunteer assistant in the prep ranks, under Coach Brian Smith at Albuquerque, N.M.-area Rio Rancho High School, in 2005-06.

As a player at Stanford, Robinson helped the team to a 92-34 overall record and four NCAA tournament appearances, including the 2003-04 season when the Cardinal earned a No. 1 national ranking and a Pac-10 championship.

During the 2003-04 season, Robinson’s game-winning shot against Arizona was nominated for an ESPN ESPY Best Moment. The play included him helping to steal the ball, taking two dribbles across half-court and firing home a 35-footer as time expired to defeat the Wildcats.

Robinson started 67 of the 110 games in which he appeared under Johnson (2004-05) and coach Mike Montgomery (2001-04) at Stanford. His teammates named him the Cardinal’s best defensive player three times and he served as a team captain during his junior and senior seasons.

He was a three-time recipient of the men’s basketball program’s Howie Dallmar Coaches award, presented annually to a Stanford student-athlete who displays excellence on and off the court. He also earned a spot on the Capital One University Division Academic AllDistrict VIII team his senior year and was a three-time academic allPac-10 selection.

A native of Liberty, Mo., Coach Robinson holds a bachelor’s degree in political science and a master’s degree in sociology from Stanford.

He and his wife, Meagan, are the parents of four children, Annie, Tate, Toby and Elsie Jane.

NEVADA, 2005 SECOND SEASON AT SOUTHERN UTAH

Todd Okeson is in his second season on the men's basketball staff at Southern Utah University. He came to SUU from the University of Georgia, where he served three years on the Bulldog men's basketball staff.

Last season Coach Okeson helped the Thunderbirds to a sixth-place finish in the Big Sky Conference and a post-season tournament berth in the 'Birds' first season in the BSC. Under his tuteledge guard Damon Heuir earned second-team all-Big Sky honors after finishing the season ranked third in the conference in scoring and among its leaders in assists and 3-point shooting.

Coach Okeson is a 2005 graduate of the University of Nevada and he has since gone on to receive a Master's Degree in sports administration from Georgia. He served as the Bulldogs' operations coordinator for one season and was a graduate assistant with the program from 2009 to 2011. While at Georgia, Coach Okeson worked with film exchange, opponent scouting, academics, and he assisted with recruiting. Prior to joining the Bulldog staff he spent a season with the Reno Bighorns of the NBDL as assistant for basketball operations and two seasons on the staff at Nevada under current Georgia Head Coach Mark Fox. A Weskan, Kansas, native, Okeson played two seasons for Coach Trent Johnson at Nevada, earning all-tournament team honors as a senior on the Wolfpack's 2004 Sweet 16 squad. Following his collegiate days he went on to play professionally in Sweden and Finland as well as with the San Jose Skyrockets of the American Basketball Association.

Coach Okeson works with recruiting and on-the-floor coaching at SUU, as well as with scouting and game preparation. He is also in charge of academics for the program.

Todd and his wife Natalie have a son, Gaines (four), and welcomed their daughter, Micah, into the family in August.

Chad Bell is in his first season on the men's basketball staff at Southern Utah University.

A 2006 graduate of the University of Nevada with a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and a master’s of educational leadership (granted in 2012), Bell spent the past two seasons on the Wolfpack coaching staff, serving as a graduate assistant in 2011-12 and as director of basketball operations last season. He also spent the 2010-11 season as a graduate assistant at Wyoming. While on the staff at Nevada he oversaw team travel, film exchange, directed the summer camp, participated in player development, film editing, practice preparation, coaching instruction and served as an academic liason. His duties at Wyoming included player development, film exchange, practice preparation and coaching instruction.

As a player, Coach Bell spent two seasons at Nevada, helping the Wolf Pack to a pair of NCAA appearances after transferring from New Mexico, where he was also a two-year letter-winner from 2001-03. He was named Nevada’s most improved player following his junior season when the team went 25-7, and he served as a team captain his senior year when the team went 27-6 and claimed its second straight WAC championship. He then went on to play three seasons at the professional level, both in Europe and in the NBA Developmental League, before joining the coaching ranks.

The Inglewood, Calif., native will work as a recruiter and on-the-floor coach, with scouting and game preparation.

SOUTHERN UTAH, 2010 FOURTH SEASON AT SOUTHERN UTAH

Drew Allen returns to the Thunderbird staff for his fourth season this year, his second as a full-time assistant after serving as the team's director of basketball operations from 2010-2012.

During his time on the staff Coach Allen has helped the team advance to three conference tournaments, including last year’s Big Sky berth in the University’s first season in the BSC and an appearance in the semi-finals of the Summit League tourney in 2012.

A two-year letter-winner at SUU, Coach Allen walked on to the Thunderbird squad in the fall of 2008 but quickly earned a scholarship after proving to be a vital contributor, both as a starter and off the bench. A team-captain his senior year, Coach Allen appeared in all but five games during his SUU playing career. Allen came to SUU from Collin County Community College, where he earned NCAA academic all-America honors after ranking among the nation’s top-20 3-point shooters his sophomore year.

Coach Allen’s duties include recruiting, game preparation and scouting.

A native of Flower Mound, Texas, Coach Allen and his wife Chelsea reside in Cedar City.

YAHOSH BONNER DIRECTOR OF BASKETBALL OPERATIONS/VIDEO COORDINATOR NORTHERN COLORADO, 2010 FIRST SEASON AT SOUTHERN UTAH

Yahosh Bonner joined the SUU men's basketball staff this season in the dual roles of Director of Basketball Operations and Video Coordinator.

A 2010 graduate of the University of Northern Colorado, Coach Bonner has spent the past three seasons on the staff at Western Nebraska Community College, where he worked with former SUU assistant Russell Beck, and helped coach the Cougars to one of their best seasons in a decade in 2012.

While at Northern Colorado he was named the Big Sky Conference’s Defensive Player of the Year following the 2009-10 season as he helped UNC to a school-record 25-win season. Prior to his time at UNC he spent a season at Salt Lke Community College where he helped the Bruins to an appearance in the NJCAA national tournament in 2008. Prior to playing with the Bruins Coach Bonner spent a season at Cochise College and he served an LDS church mission in Tampa, Fla., from 2004 to 2006.

Bonner is making a homecoming of sorts as he lived in Cedar City for three years during his teens, playing basketball as a freshmand and sophomore at Cedar High School in1999-2000 and 2000-01 before his family moved to Arizona, where he lettered two seasons at Mesa's Mountain View HS. Coach Bonner and his wife Vanessa are the parents of a son, Malachi.

He also chipped in 7.9 points per game while connecting on 50.0 percent of his shots from the field in 2011-12. His blocks average ranked second in the Scenic West Conference, his field goal percentage ranked fourth and he was also among the conference's top-10 in rebounding and offensive rebounds last year. Cheesman helped the Bruins to a 22-9 overall mark - including a 9-6 record in SWAC play - and a number-two seed in the Region 18 tournament.

At SUU, 2012-13: Came off the bench in every game. Scored a career-high 10 points with a career-best three rebounds vs. CS Fullerton. Hit 2-of-3 shots, both threes, against San Diego Christian to finish with six points, also had a pair of assists and a rebound vs. the Hawks. Played a season-high 25 minutes against NAU, hit 2-of-2 free throws in crunch time and dished out three assists without committing a turnover. Tied his career-high with 10 points at Idaho State when he hit 3-of-3 3-pointers and 1-of-2 FTs, also had an assist and a steal in 22 minutes on the court. Scored eight points on 3-of-5 shooting (2-4 threes) with two assists and a steal in SUU’s Big Sky tournament game against North Dakota.

At Park Hill HS: Averaged 21.4 points, 5.1 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 1.7 steals per game for Coach David Garrison’s Trojans at Park Hill High, helping lead the team to a conference championship. He was named first-team all-state, all-conference and all-district as well as the conference player of the year. Was a DiRenna Award finalist, the award honoring the Kansas City-area MVP. An honor roll student and academic letterman, Nsenki also lettered in football and soccer at PHHS. He also served on the student council.

Career/2012-13 Season Highs: 24 points at Eastern Washington, 8 rebounds at North Dakota, 5 assists vs. SD Christian.

At SUU, 2012-13: Played in every game, got his first start vs. CS Northridge and closed out the season in the starting lineup. Led team with a careerhigh five assists vs. San Diego Christian, also pulled down five rebounds and scored six points with a steal. Scored eight points at home vs. North Dakota, including a critical 3-pointer down the stretch that sparked a game-ending 17-8 run; also pulled down four rebounds, dished out two assists and blocked a shot . Picked off a steal in the final seconds and dished off for what turned out to be the winning basket against Northern Colorado. Hit four big free throws down the stretch to help SUU maintain it’s lead, finished with four points, a team-high three assists, a steal and a block in 12 minutes on the court at NAU. Had eight points and four rebounds, also blocked a shot and picked off a steal at Montana. Hit a big three to stifle a Northern Arizona run, finished with seven points, three rebounds and a block in 19 minutes at home vs. the Lumberjacks. Scored four points in overtime at Idaho State, including the game-clinching free throws with four seconds to play, also hit a big three down the stretch in regulation; finished with a then-career-best 12 points. Had his best game as a Thunderbird at Eastern Washington, where he scored a career-high 24 points, pulled down three rebounds and dished out two assists in 28 minutes; hit 7-of-14 shots, 5-of-10 from 3-point range and had just one turnover. Hit a 3-pointer to stake the team to a 71-68 lead with just over a minute to play in the BracketBuster win over Northridge.

Scored eight points, pulled down four rebounds and had two assists at home vs. Montana State, hit 2-of-3 3-point attempts. At Phoenix Country Day School: Averaged 19.5 points, 7.7 rebounds, 2.8 blocked shots, 2.4 steals and 2.4 assists last year in leading the Eagles to 31 wins, a region title and their first state championship. He earned a spot on the all-Arizona basketball team as well as earning Arizona's small schools Player of the Year honors last year when he was also region player of the year. Best game was a 35-point outburst on senior night. During his junior season he averaged 22.6 points, 7.4 rebounds and 3.1 assists.

At Salt Lake CC: Averaged 8.2 points and 4.9 rebounds per game during the 2012-13 season when he helped Coach Todd Phillips’ Bruins to a No. 5 national ranking, a Scenic West Conference championship and an appearance in the NJCAA national tournament. He led SLCC in shooting percentage, blocks and offensive rebounds, connecting on 63 percent of his shots, rejecting 27 shots and pulling down 1.9 caroms per game. His shooting percentage ranked second in the SWCC and 12th in the nation.

At South Sevier HS: A three-time first-team allstate performer and two-time MVP in Utah's 2A classification, he helped lead Coach Scott Hunt’s Rams to four region titles, two state championships and two state semi-final appearances in his four seasons at SSHS. He averaged 24.1 points, 8.3 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game as a junior, then followed that with 27 points, 8.8 rebounds, 2.8 assists and two steals as a senior. He ended his career at SSHS ranked sixth all-time in Utah high school basketball scoring and rebounding history, and fourth all-time in career three-pointers made.

He competed in the 3-point shootout at the High School Slam Dunk and 3-Point Championships last spring as a part of Final Four Weekend. His favorite pro basketball team is the Jazz and he also roots for the Orioles. Lists his favorite movies as Back to the Future and Exit Through the Gift Shop. Jay-Z and Common Big are his favorite musicians. His favorite TV show is Futurama and his favorite foods are hamburgers, ribs and fruit. His dream starting five would include himself, Shawn Kemp, Pistol Pete, Derrick Rose and Karl Malone. The arena in which he dreams of playing is Madison Square Garden.

THE BIG SKY CONFERENCE

The Big Sky Conference celebrates 50 years of men’s athletics and 25 years of women’s competition during the 2013-14 academic year.

The venerable and stable Division I Big Sky Conference observed its 50th birthday on July 1, 2013. To mark the historic occasion, the league will honor its past by commemorating its top male and female athletics, as well as the top moments and teams.

Four of the current league members – Idaho State University, The University of Montana, Montana State and Weber State – have been with the league since its birth. Fellow charter member the University of Idaho will bring the majority of its sports back to the Big Sky on July 1, 2014. Northern Arizona University enters its 45th season in the league, giving the league five members with at least 40 years of continuous membership.

Doug Fullerton The Big Sky Conference welcomed North Dakota and Southern Utah on July 1, 2012 as full members. UC Commissioner Davis and Cal Poly joined as football affiliate members. Eastern Washington University, the University of Northern Colorado, Portland State University and Sacramento State round out the current membership.

The league has become one of the strongest Division I conferences in the West and is a national leader in the Football Championship Subdivision. Six times, Big Sky teams have won the Division I National Championship, including Eastern Washington in 2010. A Big Sky team has played for the national championship in three of the past five seasons. The Big Sky is one of three conferences in the western United States playing Division I football.

The Big Sky Conference was established in 1963 by six charter members – Idaho, Idaho State, Gonzaga, Montana, Montana State and Weber State. Those six schools formed the foundation of the Big Sky before the league expanded in 1970 by adding Boise State and Northern Arizona. Gonzaga left the Sky in 1979 and was reRon Loghry placed by Nevada, which gave the league eight members. The conference grew to nine schools in 1987 with the Assistant Commissioner addition of Eastern Washington.

The 1990s saw change in the makeup of the league, beginning in 1992 when Nevada departed and put the Big Sky back at eight teams. In 1996 Boise State and Idaho left and at the same time the conference added Portland State, Sacramento State and Cal State Northridge. The Big Sky maintained nine teams for five years before Cal State Northridge departed in the spring of 2001.

The Big Sky now includes nine states spanning from the Pacific Ocean to the Red River Valley of North Dakota. The league is represented along the entire west coast with institutions in Washington, Oregon and California. League schools also range up and down the Rocky Mountains with institutions in Montana, Idaho, Utah, Arizona and Colorado. It is “The Heart of the American West.”

On Feb 25, 1963, the name Big Sky was adopted by the six presidents of the charter members as the name of the new conference. The name Big Sky originated in a novel written by the late A.B. (Bud) Guthrie of Great Jaynee Falls, Mont., in 1947 entitled “The Big Sky.” Jack Hollowell, a former Montana advertising director, promoted the Nadolsky Big Sky theme for the Treasure State. While on a track and field trip from Pocatello, Idaho, to Missoula, Mont., Assistant Commissioner legendary Dubby Holt of Idaho State saw a “Welcome to Big Sky Country” sign as his team entered Montana.

Holt, and his athletes thought “Big Sky” would be a perfect name for the new conference. Harry Missildine of the Spokane Spokesman-Review called for the newly formed league to be named the Big Sky Conference in his column dated Feb. 20, 1963.

The Big Sky sponsors championships in 15 sports, including men’s and women’s cross country, indoor and outdoor track and field, basketball and tennis. In addition, there are also championships in football, and women’s volleyball, golf and soccer. The Big Sky sponsored softball for the first time in 2013. Men’s golf will return as a conference sport in 2014-15.

Jon Kasper In 1988-89, the Big Sky ConferAssistant ence first began sponsoring Commissioner women’s sports. The former Mountain West Conference existed from 1982-88, sponsoring championships for women’s sports at the same institutions the Big Sky had men’s programs. The Big Sky merged with the Mountain West in 1988, forming one league for both men and women.

Doug Fullerton, the fifth commissioner of the Big Sky Conference, is in his 19th year at the helm. Fullerton took over the Big Sky on July 1, 1995, replacing longtime commissioner Ron Stephenson, who passed away in 2011. Stephenson served the league for 14 years. Steve Belko was the commissioner from 197781, while John Roning held the post from 1971-77.

The first league commissioner was Jack Friel, who served from 1963-71.

QUICK REVIEW OF 2012-13

Southern Utah earned a berth in the Big Sky post-season tournament in its first year in the league after finishing tied for sixth with Northern Arizona and Sacramento State, then subsequently winning the tie-breaker to enter the tournament as the No. 6 seed.

After getting off to a slow start with five of the first six games away from home the Thunderbirds won four of six – including their first three conference games – in December and early January to put themselves in contention in the BSC. After weathering a four-game slide the team bounced back to win five straight games, the longest winning streak at SUU since the 2001-02 season but struggled down the stretch with five of the last eight on the road.

SUU had a pair players named to the all-Big Sky second team by the coaches, seniors Jackson Stevenett and Damon Heuir JACKSON STEVENETT after the duo finished third and fourth in the conference in scoring, with Stevenett ranking among the league-leaders in a handful of additional categories.

Heuir earned a pair of Big Sky Player of the Week honors during the year, while Stevenett – who originally came to SUU as a walk-on – finished his career as one of just two Thunderbirds to rank among the school’s top-10 in both scoring and rebounding. He finished his career with 1,273 points, fifth on the SUU career list, and 502 rebounds, the eighth-best total in SUU history.

Southern Utah University’s Athletic Department is dedicated to providing quality programs that assist in complimenting and fulfilling the University’s educational objectives and mission.

The athletic program adheres to the policies and procedures of the NCAA and the rules of any conference, league or association of which it is a member.

Rich Kendell INTERIM PRESIDENT

Former commissioner of the Utah System of Higher Education (USHE) Rich Kendell, one of Utah’s most honored and distinguished educators, is serving as Southern Utah University’s interim president while the search proceeds to replace former President Michael T. Benson.

Over an incredible educational career, Kendell has been recognized as one of the best in both public and higher education. During his ten years as superintendent of Utah’s Davis School District he was named the Utah Superintendent of the year and was a four-time National Superintendent of the Year finalist. He was also tabbed as the Utah Education Association’s Administrator of the Year.

Kendell’s career ranges from being an English teacher at Ogden High School to being an associate dean of two different schools at the University of Utah, with many positions in between. Dr. Kendell was a research analyst for USHE some 30 years ago before moving over to the U. of U. to help lead its graduate school and its school of education, and he later took on the role of acting chair of the University’s Department of Leadership and Policy.

Dr. Kendell served as Deputy to Governor Michael O. Leavitt for public education, higher education and economic development, and also served as executive director of the Utah Partnership. Kendell was also awarded the G. Homer Durham Regents Professorship by the Utah State Board of Regents.

He is a fellow with the Wheatley Institution at Brigham Young University, a recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Award at the University of Utah, has been named the Distinguished Teacher Educator of the Year by the Utah Association of Teacher Educators, and was honored by Weber State University with the Lewis Shurtleff Award for contributions to education. Dr. Kendell also has an endowed chair in his name at Southern Utah University.

Kendell earned his B.S. in English at Weber State and then earned both an M.S. and a Ph.D. in Leadership and Policy at the University of Utah. His entire professional career, spanning some 35 years, has been dedicated to education. He and his wife, Joan, have four children and twelve grandchildren.

SOUTHERN UTAH ADMINISTRATION KEN BEAZER SUU DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS

Ken Beazer is in his eighth year as Southern Utah’s Athletic Director and during his tenure he has overseen tremendous growth in the Thunderbird athletic program.

Since Beazer’s arrival in 2006 SUU has added the sports of women’s volleyball, women’s golf and men’s tennis and his efforts were instrumental in the Thunderbirds’ move into the Big Sky Conference in the summer of 2012.

Beazer has also been active in professional and community boards. He currently serves as second vice president of the FCS Athletic Directors Association and will take over the presidency of that body next year. He also serves on the NCAA Football Rules Committee and serves on the board of directors of the Utah Chapter of the National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame.

Beazer came to Southern Utah from Utah State University, where he had served as director of athletic development for the past four-plus years. While at USU, Beazer developed and initiated the largest capital campaign in the history of the school’s athletic department, including fund-raising for a planned $25 million renovation of Romney Stadium.

Prior to his time at Utah State, Beazer spent nine years at Snow College, the first three as defensive coordinator on the football coaching staff and the final six – from 1995 to 2001 – as the school’s director of athletics. As a coach his teams ranked among the NJCAA’s top five defenses two of his three seasons, while as AD at Snow he implemented the college’s first Athletic Foundation Board as well as an annual giving program. He also spent two seasons as a graduate assistant football coach at Washington State University.

Beazer is a 1989 graduate of Weber State University with a degree in broadcast communication. He also holds a master of arts degree in communication from Washington State, as well as an associate of arts in the same field from Snow College.

Beazer and his wife, Cidnee, are the parents of four children: Rhett, Adrienne, Jadon and Harrison.

Southern Utah University is truly a place where academics come first. The strong academic commitment of the staff and coaches is manifest in the overall academic accomplishments our teams achieve on an annual basis. The University’s strong academic emphasis, coupled with the dedicated efforts of the student athletes, allows the Athletics Department to continually post high marks in the classroom.

Thunderbird Athletics was recently rewarded by its fellow institutions with an unprecedented, fourth consecutive Mid-Continent Conference Sportsmanship Award, setting a new standard by which all institutions are now measured.

Thunderbird student athletes readily accept their responsibility of role models and spent countless hours in the local schools mentoring children.

Southern Utah’s basketball facilities are among the finest in the Big Sky. With newly re-modeled coaches offices and locker rooms, as well as a new floor, the Centrum Arena is a beautiful facility. SUU basketball athletes work out in the Norton Strength & Conditioning Center, a 3,300 square foot facility containing over 4.5 tons of strength and conditioning equipment.

SUU’s physical education complex houses an olympicsized pool, an indoor running track and a weight/workout room.

Eccles Coliseum is the home to Southern Utah Football. The stadium was renovated in 1997 and houses a modern press box, luxury suites, coaches offices, locker rooms and a newly remodeled training facility. Practice fields are to the west while the athletics offices, the weight room and the gymnastics training facility are housed in adjacent buildings to the south.

Cedar Ridge Golf Course is home to the SUU golf team. Cedar Ridge also hosts SUU’s cross country meets, including the 2009 Summit League championships.

Southern Utah’s training facilities include a fully-equipped medical and training facility in the Centrun Arena and three other locations on campus, including a recently expanded training room in Eccles Coliseum. SUU’s training facilities also include an Olympic-sized pool. With a fully-certified staff as well as a student training program SUU is prepared to handle all the training needs of its 17 sports’ student-athletes.

Athletics is an important part of your life right now but what’s next when your playing days are over? Southern Utah University can help you prepare for a successful career in a variety of fields. SUU offers eight master’s programs and over 120 bachelor’s programs in its five schools and colleges, as well as a range of certificates, associate and pre-professional degrees in a wide variety of disciplines.

School of Business

In addition to master’s degrees in accountancy and business administration, the SUU School of Business offers bachelor’s degrees in seven majors, with eleven additional areas of specialization. In the 2010-11 academic year, SUU’s graduating seniors scored at the 85th percentile on the ETS Major Field Exam in Business, placing them in the top 15 percent of the nation’s graduates. Business students at SUU have had many great opportunities to hone their skills in the real world by working with local businesses to provide services, coordinate special events and participate in strategic assessment and planning activities. In addition to business studies, SUU offers a military science program through Army ROTC. Southern Utah is justifiably proud of its academic record.

This past year over 100 SUU student-athletes carried cumulative GPAs above 3.20 and during fall semester 51 SUU athletes earned Dean’s List recognition. Last year the athletics department as a whole carried a 3.07 GPA. SUU’s women’s gymnastics team has claimed seven academic national championships, including a run of six straight from 2001 trough 2006, and the team has not finished out of the top-three since 1991! In addition, the men’s track & field and women’s softball teams have each won a pair of academic national championships in recent years and the 2002 women’s cross country team was second-best in the nation.

This past season SUU’s football team was honored by the NFCA for showing the best APR improvement in the Great West Conference, while the men’s basketball team received a similar award from The Summit League.

SUU’s athletes have access to an academic center which houses individual and group study areas, a computer lab and a full-time academic coordinator.

College of Education and Human Development

The SUU College of Education offers two master’s degrees as well as seven primary majors and five areas of licensure. The SUU physical education department – known as ‘The Coaching Factory’ because of the success of its graduates – is housed in one of the finest facilities of its kind in the West. The Sorenson Physical Education Building houses an Olympicsized swimming pool, three basketball courts, five racquetball courts, state-of-the-art kinesiology and exercise laboratories and technologyequipped classrooms. The college offers its students many opportunities for hands-on learning, including field experience and study abroad programs.

College of Humanities and Social Sciences

SUU’s College of Humanities and Social Sciences offers two master’s degrees and 21 undergraduate degrees with an expanse of study in 25 different areas. SUU’s campus newspaper, The University Journal, has won more awards over the past 12 years than any university newspaper in 14 Western states. Students of humanities and social sciences are offered a variety of internship opportunities in most disciplines of the college. Interns are able to gain valuable practical educational experience, academic credit and often financial compensation. The Michael O. Leavitt Center for Politics and Public Service places numerous interns each semester at the local, state and federal level.

College of Performing and Visual Arts

The College of Performing and Visual Arts at SUU offers a Master of Fine Arts in arts administration as well as bachelor’s degrees in the areas of art and design, music, and theatre arts & dance. The MFA program is the only one of its kind in the western USA. Professional affiliations include the Tony Award-winning Utah Shakespeare Festival, the American Folk Ballet and the Braithwaite Fine Arts Gallery.

College of Science & Engineeringz

SUU’s College of Science is home to studies in agriculture, biology, chemistry, geography, geology, nursing and nutrition. The college has seen 90 percent of its graduates applying to professional pharmacy schools and 87 percent of applicants to medical schools accepted. In 2011, the Center for Health and Molecular Sciences building opened, offering students updated lab facilities, a five-room rooftop greenhouse and expanded facilities for SUU’s emerging nursing program. Also housed in the college are studies in computing, integrated engineering and technology. The college of CIET at SUU prepares students to compete on a global level in careers related to computer science, information systems, mathematics, technology and engineering. The college offers 14 bachelor’s degrees and associates degrees in eight different areas of study.

Affiliated with the university are a number of cultural arts and performing groups, which support the mission of SUU.

Southern Utah University is a comprehensive institution offering programs for students with many interests and goals.

The University provides undergraduate liberal education in the arts, humanities and sciences; authorized professional work in teacher education, business and technology; and specialized training in vocational teacher education.

SUU has been accorded a host of outstanding academic honors in recent years. Consumers Digest named the University among the Top Ten in its list of quality and value in colleges and universities in America for the second time in three years. The Princeton Review has tabbed SUU as a Best Value Institution, while U.S. News and World Report has listed the University as one of America’s Best Colleges. The Princeton Review has also named SUU as one of its “Best In The West” for the past eight years.

SUU students select their courses from departments and programs in the School of Business; the College of Computing, Integrated Engineering & Technology; the School of Continuing & Professional Studies; the College of Education & Human Development; the College of Humanities & Social Sciences; the College of Performing & Visual Arts; and the College of Science. More than 600 faculty and staff members serve SUU’s 7,516 undergraduate and graduate students.

SUU is also home to the Tony Award-winning Utah Shakespearean Festival with its Adams Memorial Theatre, based upon the original Globe Theatre, and the Randall Jones Theatre, one of the finest indoor theatres in the West.

Campus facilities range from the traditional ivy-covered Old Main and Braithwaite Liberal Arts Center – built in 1898 and 1899 – to the multi-use Sharwan Smith Center, a facility which houses the Centrum Arena – SUU’s basketball and gymnastics venue – as well as classrooms, a ballroom, the University’s student union, its bookstore and various offices.

State-of-the-Art campus facilities that have opened recently include the Emma Eccles Jones Education Building and a new phase of apartment-style on-campus housing; while the Carter Carillon Tower has become, almost overnight, a characteristic landmark of the campus.

Another exciting development on campus was the ground-breaking for construction of the University’s new Science Center.

The University also owns and operates a 1,000-acre farm in western Cedar Valley and a 3,700-acre ranch in Cedar Canyon.

Because of their proximity and grandeur, Zion National Park and Cedar Breaks National Monument are claimed by SUU’ students as part of their campus. Geology and life science field trips take advantage of these national treasures, in addition to Bryce Canyon, Grand Canyon, Capitol Reef and Great Basin National Parks, which are also close by.

The University’s skiing classroom is at the 11,300-foot Brian Head Ski Resort, less than an hour away, while the recreational opportunities offered by Lake Powell are less than two hours away.

SUU has a history unique in the annals of American higher education. In 1897, the entire population of Cedar City, then a small pioneer town, engaged in the building of Old Main, the first building of the University. Beginning the project in mid-winter because of a harsh deadline imposed by the legislature, the men and women of the community donated materials, money and labor to complete the building on time.

Today the university campus has grown to comprise 133 acres, landscaped with fountains, tall spruce and pine trees, plazas, statuary, latticed walkways and expansive lawns, offering the kind of education you’d expect to receive at a small, private school at the low price of a public institution.

CEDAR CITY AND IRON COUNTY Located in the heart of southern Utah’s Color Country, Cedar City has received numerous “Best Places To Live In The USA” awards over the years. A vital, growing mountain community with four distinct seasons, Cedar City boasts 310 clear days a year.

Cedar City has a population of 22,000 while surrounding Iron County has 35,000 residents.

The home of Southern Utah University, Cedar City is also home to the American Folk Ballet and the Utah Shakespearean Festival (both affiliated with the University), as well as the Iron Mission State Park, Cedar Ridge Golf Course and a variety of recreational facilities including four city parks, two baseball/softball complexes and a bicycle/walking path, all within minutes of the SUU campus.

Within an easy day’s drive are five national parks – Zion, Bryce, Grand Canyon, Great Basin and Capitol Reef – several state parks and recreation areas and a host of hunting, fishing and other outdoor recreational opportunities, including Brian Head Ski Resort, just a 45-minute drive from campus.

Cedar City is also one of the safest places in the country, as Utah is consistently rated as one of the nation’s safest states and Iron County is perennially one of the state’s safest counties.
