‘Reverie Art Museum’

Tectonic Operations Vii

(Guided by: Ar Smit Vyas)

STUDIO- 5 I MONSOON 2022

The studio explored ways through which outdated buildings can become sites for creative thinking about construction processes. New programmatic parts were added to buildings of an old precinct, necessitating actions of repair, replacement or introduction of alternative parts in them. By way of this, new formal, structural & material conditions were tested against the existing ones in an attempt to find a wholesome architectural expression.

The Reverie Art Museum is experienced as a journey wrapped around a solid core and enclosed by orthogonal partition walls, creating a non disruptive and meditative space. The plan of the xhibition is born out of the plan of the existing building. However, it opposes its language by eliminating all the existing partition walls and slab and creates a canopy in the center that shelters the entire space. The central walls are made out of RCC which emerge from the ground, ascend and eventually grow into the roof of the space.

Design Development

Site And Program

The campus of L.D. Guest Houses consists of three buildings all of which have been recently renovated. The intention of the studio was to transform the old complex with new design interventions and convert it into a performance arts centre.

Rudolf Olgiati MASTERS’ STROKES

MATTERS OF ARCHITECTURAL LANGUAGE (ONGOING)

(Guided by: Ar Sachin Soni)

STUDIO- 6 I SPRING 2023

This studio explores works of selected architects and tries to decipher their unique architectural vocabulary and grammar that each of them have developed. I learned to derive distinct attitudes of Rudolf Olgiati towards various aspects of architecture through analysis of his work. These attitudes are verified intermediately through small design problems and later tested and modified when employed to design a project in a completely different context.

The ongoing project is a that of a visitor’s center in Chittorgarh.

Travelling Cube

The cube is an installation highlighting Rudolf Ogliati’s key attitudes towards mass, surface, space and light. The entire cube is a massy chunk from where openings are carved out in a way that they reveal key views of the interior. The openings are irregular in size and position and are present on almost all the faces. This adds to the plastic effect of the installation and allows the viewer to go around the installation and experience it. The openings are funnel shaped, adding volume to the surface and the entire interior surfaces are painted white, just like he does. Light enters from the punctures and lights up the room in various ways.

INTERIOR VIEWS

The maze is a game highlighting Rudolf Olgiati’s key attitudes towards datum, order and geometry. The outer walls are the aggregators which hold the game inside. The form of the outer walls is derived considering the positions from where the user will hold the game. Here topography, the outside environment acts as the datum and regulates the turning or walls in plan. The corridors and pivoting staircase are the path from where the ball will go. Here, the staircase acts as the datum around which the entire game revolves.
