Where do you start with search engine optimization? If you are starting from scratch, the best place to start is to Google for search engine optimization (SEO) and read some of the free information that will come up in the links that seem to cover the subject in depth. But here is a short introduction that will get you going quickly. First, there are two types of SEO: On-page SEO Off-page SEO Start with on-page optimization Both are important, and since on-page optimization is fairly simple, it is best to start there. At the top of each web page is the title tag, which looks like this: Make sure that you put the title of your page in there, and make sure that it is the sort of words - it should be phrase of at least two words - people type in when searching. For example: Search Engine Optimization Next, there should be several entries called meta tags in the part of the page. The two we are concerned with are: This is important as it is used by many search engines as the description in the listing of your site This is less important these days, but some minor search engines still take note, so put in a few keywords - words or phrases people use to search for your product. Don't put in more than about six keywords or keyphrases. The page layout is also important. Nowadays, the search engines like to see a lot of items on a page. Therefore it is a good idea to have latest news in a sidebar - a narrow column at the side of the page - and an rss feed somewhere else. A video or audio section is also helpful. Keyword density The other important factor is keyword density. This is the number of times the main phrase defining the subject of the site is included. For example, in a site about search engine optimization, the main keyword would be search engine optimization, and the secondary keyword might be off

line search engine optimization. By the way, these are far too generalized key phrases to use these days as there are millions of pages using them. Anyway, the main keyword should be 1-3% of the word count. If you go much higher than this you will be considered to be keyword stuffing. The secondary keyword should appear less often, maybe around 1%, but there should always be fewer of these words than the main keyword. Each page of the website should have at least 300 words on it . The word count, which you can find in Word or OpenOffice, should be 300- 600 words. Alt tags Each image on a web page can have an tag which tells the viewer what the image will show before it appears. These are also helpful for people with impaired vision. Therefore, it is a good idea to include alt tags, and to make sure that they have a keyword in. Instead of putting alt="Chart" you would put alt="Off-line SEO Chart".

That is the basis of on-page SEO. Find reviews of top products so you can choose which is best for you at the website run by John Hartley here: http://www.reallyusefulmarketing.com/
