If you are renting an apartment or living in a dorm for the first time then you are probably wondering what to do about a washer and dryer. You could buy a new washer and dryer, but if you are in a dorm then you probably won't have the necessary hookups available to you. In your case you might want to consider one of the portable or mini washer and dryers. They are small, but are nice for handling a small load of under garments, delicates or a couple of shirts. This option would at least save making so many trips to the laundry mat. You may also be able to find a used portable or mini unit at a good price from a student who is graduating. If you are moving into an apartment or even a new home, but are limited on funds, then you should look around for a used washer and dryer. People are selling their appliances for all sorts of reasons. Some people are buying a new home where the appliances are all included. Their old washer and dryer set may not really be that old. Some people are getting a divorce and selling off all their assets. Sometimes these units are just a few years old. If you are going to keep your appliances for a few years then buying a used set will usually come out to cost you much less than renting or spending a lot of quarters at the laundry mat for weeks and weeks. Not to mention the hassle of lugging all those loads back and forth to the laundry. Sometimes you can find a good deal on a used washer and dryer online at Craigslist or Freecycle.org. Drill down to your area and see if anyone is selling a used washer and dryer. You might even find someone that is giving one away if you will just come pick them up. When you do purchase and get them home, wipe them inside and out with warm water mixed with an anti-bacterial soap or something like Lysol. Another way to save money on this type purchase is to buy just the washer and then hang your clothes outside on a clothes line to dry. They will smell clean and fresh when you bring them in.
An option that would cost more than used, but less than new, is to consider one of the scratch and dent units offered at some of the local retailers.  Washers and Dryers usually have a long lifecycle and if you decide to move or get a new set then you can usually sell them again as used and make some money. Or, you could give them to a charity and use their value as a tax write-off.
