NEW SEASON - NEW DRIVER 2013 kicked off with the news that local Bajan rally ace Neil Armstrong would be driving the Suzuki SX4 WRC for the 2013 season. The multiple class winner tested the Suzuki in the UK under the watchful eye of three time British rally Champion Mark Higgins. Armstrong had this to say about the test and the SX4: “The test was absolutely amazing - such an eye-opening experience. The stages we tested on Saturday were proper Wales Rally GB type stuff - fast, flowing, hairpins, up and down, everything you could imagine and on a perfect manicured surface. Mark took his time with me, he is an awesome guy and showed me a couple of ways where I can improve.” “In terms of the car, the Suzuki SX4 WRC is fantastic. The car’s turn in is unbelieveable. How it stops, how it reacts, how you can just lob it into a corner, get on the brakes and then just power out, with minimal steering input, its just amazing.” “I have driven a 4wd Group N car before - a Group N Evo 6 - and the only similarities between the SX4 and the Evo is that they are both 4WD and they both have a steering wheel. Every aspect of the SX4 is just better and improved to a level that I am now only beginning to comprehend.” “I am so looking forward to driving it in Trinidad and then in Barbados.” Mark Higgins had this to say about Armstrong and the SX4: “The first time I drove the car on gravel I felt totally at home with it, the balance was incredible and it really hangs onto the corners well. To be quite honest I have driven a lot of world rally cars over the last ten years and I am very, very impressed with this car. What the team have achieved with this car so far is really good. It was very hard for the guys to get me out of it! I had to give it back to Neil however, who has been doing a great job in testing. Neil is a bright talent and he is learning really well at the moment." "Neil has driven front wheel drive and Group N, so its a fantastic background for getting into a world rally car. I think he’s adapting very well. The car is very driver friendly so its a great base to start from. He is a natural driver that’s for sure, he listens well, his speed is good and he’s improving all the time. Watch this space, as I believe Neil could be the new star out in the Caribbean."

On arrival in Trinidad, Team Suzuki SX4 WRC attended a Team launch for the rally at Lifestyle Motors, the local Suzuki dealer. Both the Suzuki SX4 WRC of Barbadian Neil Armstrong and the Suzuki Swift of Trinidadian Ryan Peyrau were on display. After an all-too-brief test in Trinidad on Friday morning just prior to the rally, new Team driver Neil Armstrong and Co-driver Barry Ward started Rally Trinidad 2013 on Friday 22nd March with two excellent runs through the Haseley Crawford Stadium Stage to lie second overall at the end of the first day’s action. The bulk of Saturday’s stages were in the Cedar Hill area and despite a couple of challenges, Armstrong and Ward continued to impress despite their relative inexperience in the Suzuki SX4 WRC. Armstrong said “So far Panton is definitely quicker through the more technical stages, but we are trying to keep it relaxed and take it one stage at a time. So much to learn. We are having a blast though! I think when I launched the SX4 last night for the first time at the Super Special I put my Co-Driver into a state of shock! He's not stopped grinning since..." The SX4 WRC lost 4th and 5th gears on Stage 10 on Saturday, so Armstrong and Ward had to complete that stage as well as stage 12 - the last stage of the day - with fewer gears than they would have liked, but they were still able to hold onto their second place position going into Sunday. The team changed the gearbox on Saturday night in preparation for the final day of the rally which took place in the famous Bronte area. Armstrong and Ward won the first stage on Sunday and then proceeded to settle into a good rhythm which resulted in a fine second overall as the rally finished late on Sunday afternoon. certainly a baptism of fire but they have certainly shown they deserve to be in the premier category and have marked their arrival in no uncertain terms! To trade times with Jamaican Jeffery Panton in any event is not easy, but on a debut rally, first time rallying a left hand drive car, first rally in a WRC AND their first time on a gravel rally in a few years was all the more impressive. After the Rally Trinidad adventure the team had only 48 hours after clearing the SX4 WRC from the Bridgetown Port to ready the car for the Motoring Club of Barbados’ sprint event on the 14th of April. Dubbed ’Hammertime’, the 5 kilometre course in the parish of St. John attracted 30 competitors including two of the Barbadian WRC frontrunners - Paul Bourne and Roger Skeete. The Suzuki SX4 WRC was completed at 2.00AM on the morning of the event having been converted to tarmac specification. With very little seat time in the car on tarmac, team driver Neil Armstrong’s approach was one of caution. The first official timed run was affected by rain, but on the second, Armstrong recorded an excellent 2 minute 49 seconds putting him a full four seconds ahead of Roger Hill in his Toyota Corolla WRC and only 2 and a half seconds behind second place Roger Skeete. On the third and final run Armstrong narrowed that gap to a mere 8 tenths of a second finishing an excellent third overall with a best time of 2.46. Neil had this to say: “I’d say we had a very good first event. In the first two runs we struggled as it was our first time driving the car competitively on tarmac and it didn’t help that it rained halfway through the 1st official run. This made for a fairly interesting moment as the car started to push in a corner near Colleton and we barely made it out. We pressed on throughout the afternoon as the course dried and definitely made progress with two solid runs. Obviously we still have some way to go as I get more time in the car, but to finish 2 seconds off event winner Bourne and on the same second as Skeete was a good result. I will now be working hard to find that extra time and I know where to look.”

Predictions of mixed conditions for the Barbados Rally Club’s Valvoline Rally proved accurate as forty crews faced overcast skies from the start at Automotive Art’s in Welches in the centre of the island. Competitors first tackled the familiar Hangman Hill to Mt. Misery stage with Roger Skeete in his Subaru Impreza WRC S12 setting fastest time with a 2.41.25 and Armstrong a close second just 2 seconds adrift. Armstrong turned the tables on stage 2 in Dark Hole with a scintillating 2.32.88 beating Skeete by 2 seconds to draw level. On stage 3 Skeete hit back going a second and a half quicker than Neil, but Armstrong responded on stage 4 setting the fastest time of the day through Dark Hole with a 2.29.17. Fans and spectators were to be robbed of this epic battle for the lead of the rally when the Suzuki SX4 WRC developed a misfire in the early part of stage 5 and Armstrong and his navigator Barry Ward wisely chose to drive off the stage at its mid point rather than cause potential damage to the engine. After the Team engineers had checked the engine at the ensuing lunch halt it was determined it was OK to continue and Armstrong went on to set competitive times after lunch. Unfortunately not finishing stage 5 had put paid to the team being classified as an overall finisher. Neil had this to say: “Things went really well in the morning. Neil Armstrong and co-driver Barry Ward produced a stunning final run to win the Scotiabank King of The HIll sprint event in Barbados. Driving the Suzuki SX4 WRC, Armstrong topped the leader board of the final shakedown before the Caribbean’s biggest annual motor sport International - Sol Rally Barbados. In front of thousands of motor sport fans who lined the 2.5 kilometre Luke Hill course in the north of the island, Armstrong trailed last year’s Sol Rally Barbados champion Paul Bird and multiple winner Roger Skeete going into the final run but produced a faultless performance and recorded the fastest overall time of 1 minute 16.73 seconds beating a 90 car field in the process. The Suzuki SX4 WRC was perfect all day, with Armstrong and co-driver Barry Ward both thoroughly delighted to receive the trophies for first overall as well as a prize for winning the WRC-1 class. Neil had this to say: “We had a really good time out today and we were definitely pushing hard from the start. It was a bit of a task when we saw early on that we were about 2 seconds off Bird on such a short stage, but we knew where we could regain some of that time and we worked on it. What this has shown is that we definitely need to start strong for next weekend’s Sol Rally Barbados and build the rhythm from early. Of course we will be car number one on the road and will be doing a bit of road cleaning, but I don’t think that it is a great disadvantage because those in positions two and three will face a similar surface. The real advantage is for those starting lower down. I am really happy with today’s result and it is only possible thanks to a very good team effort.”

ARMSTRONG FOURTH OVERALL ON SOL RALLY BARBADOS 2013 Following his spectacular victory on the Scotiabank King of The Hill, Suzuki SX4 WRC team driver Neil Armstrong and co-driver Barry Ward were cautiously optimistic heading into the 2013 edition of Sol Rally Barbados, the biggest motorsport event in the Caribbean. The team started stage one and unfortunately the engine developed a misfire in the number one cylinder. This was diagnosed and immediately fixed after the stage and Neil had clean runs through stages 2, 3 & 4 and was very much on the pace. After an issue with the brakes which was also quickly rectified Neil continued after lunch to set some competitive times before hitting a chicane which damaged a wheel and punctured a tyre which cost about 15 seconds. Neil & Barry were pushing when they felt confident to do so and were lying fourth overall at the end of Saturday, still in the rally and looking forward to Day Two. The UK’s Paul Bird had been fastest on stage one, Automotive Art Luke Hill, and Bird would be Saturday’s only leader, steadily building his advantage during the day’s 10 stages to lead Jamaican Jeff Panton by 28secs overnight. The Jamaican had one stage win and Barbadian Roger Skeete two, lying third, another 15secs adrift. Neil said: “Today has been OK, but I now need to put it behind me and concentrate on Sunday.” The SX4 was thoroughly checked throughout Saturday night to ensure everything was OK for Sunday’s restart. Following Stage 12 (1st stage on day 2) Neil met the team reporting that he had hit an immovable object with the left rear wheel, and had a severe vibration from that corner as a result. It was immediately evident that the magnesium alloy rim was bent so it was replaced.
Neil continued to post some solid times and get into a rhythm on the faster stages as his confidence grew. The rain fell in the afternoon which meant a switch to rain tyres at the first main service. By stage 16 Armstrong was really in the groove and set a fastest overall stage time, his first on his debut in the WRC class on this event; Neil said: “That fastest time really lifted my spirits.� By this point the gap to Roger Skeete (third overall), Jeff Panton (second overall) and Paul Bird (first overall) was too large to reduce without one of them having an incident, so Neil set about consolidating his position and bringing the Suzuki SX4 WRC home for its first Sol Rally Barbados finish. Sol Rally Barbados 2013 was hailed as the most competitive ever for both 4wd and 2wd vehicles, and the team were thrilled to have brought the SX4 home in a competitive 4th place.

BRC SUMMER NIGHTS SPRINT ARMSTRONG WINS AGAIN

Neil Armstrong left it until the final stage of the Barbados Rally Club’s Summer Nights Tarmac Sprint to stamp his authority on a quality 40 car field and record the fastest overall time. With intermittent rain making conditions extremely challenging, Armstrong finished ahead of fellow WRC entrants Paul Bourne (Ford Focus WRC), Roger Skeete (Subaru WRC) and Dean Serrao (Subaru WRC), recording a blistering 1.49.27 over the 3.5 kilometre course, his winning margin a full second ahead of the rest of the field. The Suzuki SX4 WRC was perfect all night, with Armstrong collecting points for first overall and first in the WRC-1 class. Data logging on the car recorded a top speed of 197.1kmh (123mph) during one section of the course which is notable as it was wet and dark. Neil had this to say: “I really enjoyed the event and I am very pleased with the result. I think this win came at an important time for both me and the team and hopefully we can carry this momentum through the rest of the year. The car worked absolutely flawlessly. Huge thanks to the team who has been working hard to make sure we continue to progress. The conditions were far from perfect with intermittent rain throughout the night and of course the fact that it was a night event created its own set of challenges. All in all I think both the competitors and the spectators had a great time.”

ARMSTRONG WINS RALLY OF THE SUN & STARS A dominant performance by Neil Armstrong and Barry Ward secured outright victory for the Simpson Motors Suzuki SX4 WRC team on the 2013 MCBI Rally of The Sun and Stars in Barbados. The rally took place on Saturday 14th of September and was contested over 12 Special Stages. Ongoing engine development and a recent overall victory in the BRC Summer nights Sprint meant the Team approached the rally with genuine optimism and were expecting a good result. As expected during September in Barbados, the weather did its best to complicate tyre choice and a last minute change to intermediate tyres was a gamble that paid off, as parts of Special Stages 1 and 2 were damp. Neil set fastest times in the two Stages putting him ahead of arch rivals Roger Skeete (Subaru Impreza WRC) and Paul Bourne (Ford Focus WRC). The team switched to slicks for Special Stage 3, and established a slim lead over the rest of the field of about 1 second. At the halfway stage of the rally, Neil was leading Skeete by around 1.5 seconds having clawed back the time lost during the stalled start to stage 4. Bar a hairy moment with a utility pole, and a stage start without all of the spotlights on, the remaining 3 Special Stages went extremely smoothly, with Neil maintaining his lead over Skeete and adding a further two fastest stage times to take the victory. Neil had this to say: “It was a really good rally. We were very thankful it was largely dry and not a rally where we were constantly having to guess about tyres. We had a really good battle with Roger and we were sorry to see Bourne exit early. We are thrilled with the result”. SUZUKI SX4 WRC SETS PACE BUT ARMSTRONG/WARD CRASH OUT OF RALLY WHILE LEADING The Simpson Motors Suzuki SX4 WRC team travelled to the island of Martinique to take part in the final event of their 2013 rally season. Rallye Suzuki took place between Friday 6th and Sunday 8th of December and was contested over 13 special stages in the East and North of the island. This was the team’s first trip to the French island and having completed his initial recce of the route Armstrong described the stages scheduled for Friday night as being so tight and twisty that to drive them in a WRC car was going to be “like having a sword fight in a dog house”. He went on: “Some of the roads are so narrow I am not sure the car will even fit on them!” He rated Saturday’s stages however as “ some of the best I have ever seen” and both he and Ward were looking forward to the challenge. With intermittent rain and pitch black conditions the team approached the first stage with some degree of caution but Neil still set the second quickest time of 6 minutes 15 seconds through stage 1 and then blitzed stage 2 with a time of 3 minutes 30 seconds to lead the rally by two seconds ahead of local Championship leader Jean-Philippe Mongaillard in his Citroen. The two remaining stages scheduled for Friday night were cancelled due to protracted delays and the teams returned to parc fermé in Fort de France. Saturday dawned a bit brighter, but the stages scheduled to take place in the mountainous North of the island meant the weather was once again likely to be a unknown factor. Stage 5 was cancelled after the restart which meant the competition would not start in earnest until after 6PM. Plagued by windscreen fogging issues on stage 6, Armstrong relinquished the lead to Mongaillard. On stage 7 he recorded a time that was some 23 seconds faster than his first pass through the stage (stage 6) to move back ahead of Mongaillard by a slim 3

second margin. Stage 8 was cancelled before the rally had begun due to road conditions so it was on to stage 9 over which the SX4 WRC set a cracking time 11 seconds faster than the Citroen driver. Unfortunately it all went wrong on stage 10. Armstrong came over a fast crest into a downhill left hander, grazed some muddy grass on the edge of the road which unsettled the SX4 just enough to clip a low wall which broke the front left hand suspension. Unfortunately the damage to the car rendered it immobile and the team were unable to continue. Jean-Philippe Mongaillard went on to win the rally and at the prize giving on Monday night presented the trophies he had received to Armstrong and Ward in recognition of the efforts of the Simpson Motors Suzuki SX4 WRC team and their performance on the rally. In thanking the event organisers and his fellow competitors Armstrong received loud cheers when he stated that the team would be back in 2014. The Team thanked Olivier Martorana, Philippe Helene and everyone at CCIE, the rally organisers, Hubert Gallet de St. Aurin and the fantastic rally fans who had all been very welcoming and extremely helpful. Neil had this to say: “Rallying at night is very challenging for me, it was a serious experience but I would definitely like to return. I think it has been the most challenging rally I have ever done. The whole event pushed me to the limit but the entire team had a fantastic time. Olivier Martorana and everyone at CCIE went above and beyond the call of duty for us and the team. Their support and certainly that of the organisers, fellow competitors and the spectators has been second to none.�

Testing and a new Driver
We reported from our pre-season test in Wales but kept the identity of Neil Armstrong a secret. This really helped pique interest in the team before the season had even started and a further unveiling of the car’s new livery helped to generate further interest.

The Suzuki SX4WRC was completely re-liveried for the 2013 season. The car was painted a stunning matte black which provided an excellent backdrop for the identities of our marketing partners.
Redesigned Team Gear and Fan Merchandise
For 2013, we had new bespoke racing suits designed and manufactured for Neil and Barry. These carried the branding for our primary sponsor Sol and Suzuki, but our new team gear worn by all team members at all events was emblazoned with all of our partners Monster, Sol, Chefette, Digicel, Virgin Atlantic, Gunk, Hankook Tyres, Redline Fuels, Simpson Finance and Simpson Motors.
Social Media
Outside of the considerable physical and visual impact the car and the team has on the events we did during 2013, the team again utilised social media as the primary conduit for keeping fans up to date and informed about the team and its activities. We organically doubled our Facebook fan base during 2013. In terms of measuring the reach of our posts to the page throughout the year, we achieved four distinct high points. The first was the preseason announcement of our driver Neil Armstrong and the new livery; the second was Neil’s victory on the Scotiabank King of the Hill which saw us reach a pheromonal 32,249 people; our victory on the Sun and Stars Rally and the subsequent release of a ‘season to date’ video compilation and finally our trip to Martinique in December.

It is worthwhile to note that while Facebook themselves report that individual posts reach, or are seen by on average, roughly 16% of your fan base, the posts on our Suzuki SX4 WRC page regularly reach close to 50% of our fan base. The Team continues to register extremely strong engagement with its fans on social media and we have seen a greater interest from the general public with Team merchandise in high demand both in Barbados and further afield.
Media Coverage
Media coverage has been excellent with the car and driver combination becoming the primary ‘motorsport story’ of 2013 in Barbados. The Team’s presence on Rally Trinidad and Rallye Suzuki in Martinique has generated considerable interest and press coverage.

The Simpsons Motors Suzuki SX4 WRC is a clean-sheet development exercise carried out by MML Sports an independent engineering consultancy born out of the multi world championship winning Mitsubishi Motorsport/Ralliart Europe team, the competition engine division of HKS Europe, who are engine development specialists and have previously produced engines for many categories from WRC to Formula 1, in conjunction with a small design and development team assembled by Simpson Motors/ITC. The project was headed up by ex Suzuki Sport and Mitsubishi Motorsports Engineer Simon Willis, who now works in the Caribbean for ITC/Simpson Motors. The Suzuki SX4 WRC is built to full FIA WRC technical and safety regulations, and features a 2.0 litre turbo charged engine, based on the Suzuki J20 engine found in the road going SX4 and Vitara models. The initial chassis design was produced in conjunction with Suzuki Sport WRC Team prior to their withdrawal from the WRC championship, and the car is built with factory supplied Suzuki bodywork and aerodynamics. Following the initial chassis work, MML used their vast technical expertise to create a car utilizing existing and known technology where possible so as to produce a fast and reliable car within a very short development time. This strategy has been more than proven, given the outstanding debut performance in Rally Jamaica 2010 and the fantastic string of results chalked up by the team and the Suzuki SX4 WRC since its debut. Technical Overview The Suzuki SX4 WRC, is powered by a 2.0-litre, four-cylinder turbo-charged engine based on the Suzuki J20 SX4 powerplant delivering power and torque in excess of 350hp and 700Nm. The SX4 has a sequential gearbox with paddle shift and externally mounted clutch with the power being transferred to the road via permanent four wheel drive with an active centre differential. Stopping power is provided by Brembo Brakes and the SX4 uses BOS dampers, with rebound control system (different tarmac and gravel). As with any Suzuki, build quality and safety is of paramount importance and the SX4 has a WRC shell with full roll cage, Recaro carbon kevlar HANS device seats equipped with Sparco HANS harnesses.
