WWhen it comes to championship golf in a pristine coastal setting, The Dunes Golf & Tennis Club delivers an incomparable experience. Any time of year, enthusiasts can enjoy 18 challenging holes of golf, seven Har-Tru tennis courts, a heated swimming pool and an award-winning restaurant with a lively lounge. Masterfully designed by 10-time PGA tour winner Mark McCumber, The Dunes Golf & Tennis Club is nestled upon a stunning wildlife preserve on the fabled island of Sanibel, Florida.
As the crown jewel in the Inns of Sanibel Golf & Beach Resorts collection, The Dunes offers a complimentary social and sports membership to all guests of the boutique inns during their stay which includes Sanibel Inn, Seaside Inn, The Song of the Sea and Sunset Beach Resort.
While the course consists of approximately 5800 yards of manicured greens, it plays much longer thanks to cool island breezes. Golf-aficionados who play the links at The Dunes can expect to encounter water on every hole with players frequently hitting to a well protected green for an added degree of difficulty. Consistent with an island experience, The Dunes aquatic driving range is open seven days a week, and offers approximately 275 yards of long hitting into a pond. Players can perfect their short game on the perfectly manicured practice green which is situated near the clubhouse overlooking several serene lakes.
Lovers of wildlife will especially enjoy the back nine, where tarpon can be seen rolling in the lakes as alligators sun themselves on the banks. A pair of eagles affectionately known as “Zach and
MaryLou” call The Dunes home, along with exotic species of migratory birds.
The course is especially proud of its recent accolade by The Florida Department of Environmental Protection, who awarded The Dunes Golf & Tennis Club the highest grade on the island for their commitment to preserving the environment by reducing fertilizer use, growing higher grasses to filter water and adding diffusers to increase oxygen in the lakes.
The Dunes was also voted “Best Golf Course in Lee County” by readers of Gulfshore Life Magazine, a distinct honor considering the staggering number of courses in the immediate area. The club, which underwent a thorough renovation in 2016, also completed a swimming pool restoration project in 2019.
