Introduction Summary "When I am asked what I believe in, I say that I believe in architecture. Architecture is the mother of the arts. I like to believe that architecture connects the present with the past and the tangible with the intangible." Richard Meier

This document is a non-exhaustive list of several works that I could experience during my architecture curriculum. It introduces a variety of works from different fields showing the will of versatility and the holistic view that, according to me, compose the basis of an architect's mind.

Graduation Klatrehuset København

What : A climbing gym and a bridge Where : Copenhagen, Denmark When : 2013 The demands in dedicated artificial climbing structures are increasing in many countries with a low topography variation. In Copenhagen, there is less than 10 gyms dedicated to this activity. The selected site for this graduation project is at the crossroad of the sound of Baltic Sea and the Nyhavn canal in Copenhagen. This area is at the center of three other surrounding climbing clubs, and thus commercially strategical. It also closes a loop set up by the danish architecture center, which highlights several achievements and projects drawn by important local and international offices. > ARCHITECTURE > Klatrehuset København

(BIG, Lundgaard & Tranberg, MVRDV, OMA...) Until now, the place was blank, it was a piece of territory where nothing special happened and lacked connection with the water. This program proposes a special point of view on the architectural dynamic which galvanises the city, while filling this striking blank and responding to increasing needs in this activity. The project also proposes a sort of showcase on climbing thanks to its specific location, as well as a panorama on the harbour for the climbers who ascend the different walls. It also offers an overview for the spectators who can walk around the building thanks to a slope within the facade. This creates a whole new relation between the actor and the spectator.

Urban Planning (3EL+CAL)xBSL

What : A masterplan coupled with an architectural project Where : Basel, Switzerland When : 2013 Masterplan in collaboration with : R. Barota / S. Holder / C. Takahashi This masterplan is made of a landscape weaving, spread from South to North. At the southern part, low buildings and urban agriculture respond to the existing blocks, whereas the northern part of the masterplan is made of high-rise volumes responding to the existing factories. At the center, we find a bridge which connects the area to France and a whole new urban space powered by an intermodal public transport station (tram, boat, car...). Here and there, some public equipments offer a void to this density. > ARCHITECTURE > (3EL+CAL) x BSL

A building such as a public swimming pool, combined with a library, needs an important part of territory. This project pretends to be supported by the landscape, somehow it nearly becomes landscape. Slopes and green roof make an offset to the existing topography and allows the building to be walked through. It converses with its both natural and artificial environment, and tries to supply connections with the city and the Rhine. The programs slide one over the other. They are completed by a parking in basement, and a coffee which sells the production from the urban agriculture of the roof. This volume presents a cohesion despite the diversity and independence of its parts, thanks to straight and stretched lines.

Competition River Champagne Bar

What : A champagne bar on a river bank Where : Paris, France When : 2014 In collaboration with : S. Holder At first sight, the site seemed to be really appreciated by its users. We pointed the necessity of treating the general area with respect, both from a heritage point of view and considering the existing uses. The first idea was to keep the landscape accessible from the upper platform along the Louvre. In this way, the main volume was maintained in a template, where the height is limited to the street railing. Our objective was to leave accessible the walkway along the river so the walkers could still enjoy this place as they used to. Thus, the lower slab was set up at a height that > ARCHITECTURE > River Champagne Bar

allows the pedestrians to go by. The volume was also kept apart from the breast wall in order to keep a breathing between the bar and the wall, but also to maintain the existing trees. The two slabs were pinched and shifted to enhance an impression of frame allover the landscape, while leaving the possibility of enjoying the same landscape beneath the bar. Moreover, the roof was designed as a public space, generating an extra point of view on the historical bridges and the Seine. In brief, the project was thought as a wire which pretends to connect different areas of the city by fetching the landscape. The bar stretches out along the river bank in order to enjoy the landscape the widest as possible.

Competition Cultural Mesh

What : Rehabilitation of an old factory Where : Bologna, Italy When : 2014 In collaboration with : V. BĂŠthenod /J. Bolle-Reddat / C. DolĂŠjal / G. Farbos / S. Holder The existing building was defined by a particularly expressive architecture, which appears to be unconnected with its context. The factory was introverted because of its textile production. This function is now over and represents an opportunity to bring a new dynamic in the neighbourhood. One of the principal issues of the project was to open this new cultural space in order to change its image and its uses. The ground floor was redesigned to accept more transparency, more openness, and an enhanced flow > ARCHITECTURE > Cultural Mesh

between the exterior and the interior. A porch was set up at corner of the two main wings, and allowed us to create a new core for the construction : the patio. This action gave us the opportunity to connect all of the different spaces and bring light deep in the building. We organized a flexible plan. In this way, several parts of the program work together thanks to modular furniture. The space is inhabited by the users and their uses. In the continuity of this plan, we designed three terraces, which strengthen the conversation with the context. The former facade seemed very pragmatic for a factory : bring light and keep away the production from prying eyes. We chose to peel the functionalist envelop, in order to dress this industrial box with a light and perforated mesh.

> The auditorium This area was designed on one hand to cowork with the media space and on the other hand become more independent during specific events thanks to removable walls.

> The exhibition space Exhibition hall and multipurpose facility make a same space which could be splitted in order to fulfill some different needs.

> The main hall A stairs module links the different activities and takes part in the entrance sequence.

> The public space It is a free space defined by subtle topography which allows to welcome different kind of activities (playful and relaxation for example).

Digital Modelling Spaceship

What : An expo pavilion Where : ? When : 2011 In collaboration with : C. DolĂŠjal 'Spaceship' was designed in order to respond to a set of issues with the idea to create a viable and aesthetic project. The constraints were thus considered from the start as strategical challenges so they could become advantages. The idea of the exercise was to create a pavilion which could be build with a CNC machine. This space is made of two sorts of wooden layer : the first ones are continuous from the ground to the top, thus forming a general envelop, whereas the second ones form the link between the first ones and allows the pavilion to enjoy a zenithal light, thanks to the gap between them. > EXPERIMENTATIONS > Cultural Mesh

The volume, looking like a shell, reveals the idea that the pavilion represents both an object and a living organism, at the same time sedentary and nomad. This princip also allows the pavilion to be integrated in an urban or natural environment. The outer envelop also forms the inner furniture.

Land Art Skyline

What : A sculpture within the landscape Where : Andlau, France When : 2011 In collaboration with : M. BĂŠnichou / S. Holder The founding idea of 'Skyline' is the fact that a landscape is almost always seen from a precise point of view. This is why we have set up this installation from a precise point, at the foot of a hill. We wanted to play a game based on the depth of field, with several objects placed at a variety of distances, in order to highlight the fact that a skyline is the exact contrary of a simple line on an unique plan, but the result of an infinite assembly of points placed at different depths. > EXPERIMENTATIONS > Skyline

'Skyline' underlines the ridgeline with vertical elements made of dead wooden sticks, handcrafted in order to make them differ from the natural canvas. It's an original way to understand how a natural element can easily become artificial, but also to figure out how natural and artificial can cooperate within the landscape.

Workshop Copy/Paste

What : A digital experimentation Where : Delft, Netherlands When : 2012 In collaboration with : O. Poulat Founded in 2008 and integrated to the TU Delft by Winy Maas, the Why? Factory is a research laboratory around the cities of the future. The 'Copy / Paste' workshop was initiated after the following statement : we notice nowadays around the world that the architectural design is more and more frequently copied. Internet is partially responsible of the fast propagation ot the ideas, and it seems that conceptual design lacks of the specificity of the handicraft. Copy is easy, fast and cheap. Many offices are now in crises, while innovation asks for time and patience. Copy / Paste was estab> EXPERIMENTATIONS > Copy/Paste

lished in order to propose a method to copy systematically, freely and without any guilt. Not only to recreate systematically the same models through the world, but essentially to create hybrid species, new specimens, infanted by known models. This workshop was based on determining the different species existing in architectural design and their origins, in order to set up a family tree and try to invent new species. The species I worked on was the spherical volume. I tried to highlight the fact that a sphere is essentially an assembly of an infinity of points set at the same distance from a first one. I decided to pick up a piece of BIG's Kimball Art Center in order to create a sort of spherical and experimental architecture.

Workshop Made in Vitrolles

What : Urban design in a suburban space Where : Vitrolles, France When : 2013 In collaboration with : Bellastock team In july 2013, the charitable organization Bellastock proposed to a hundred of students in design and architecture to invest the city of Vitrolles and its district 'Les Pins' in order to propose to its inhabitants to reinvest the public space through the construction of urban furniture. The primary school 'Louis Pergaud' is located in the heart of the estate. It welcomes children from the surroundings and is essentially accessible by foot. The square in front of it is an important location in the district, but its gen> EXPERIMENTATIONS > Made in Vitrolles

eral layout does not offer an appropriate status to this possible articulation. The main goal of our intervention was to propose a seat to the parents waiting for their children at the end of the day, but at the same time to maintain the necessary flows through the square and the possibility of setting up ephemeral installations. In this way, the project is established on three points at the rim of the square, trying to gain on the center of the space. It's a composition of 3 sorts of gabion bench of different sizes, sometimes associated with tables made of bathtub, sunshades or even small vegetable boxes. On the last day of the workshop, this new square was the place of an unique meeting between the inhabitants, during a festal evening.

Photography Urban cityscapes

What : Photography in urban space Where : Barcelona, Hamburg, Marseille... When : 2013-2014

Sometimes I come back with a sort of catalogue of different cityscapes, buildings or atmospheres I observed.

Far from mastering the field, photography is however a discipline for which I feel lots of interest.

These few shots are essentially taken from my travels, in Barcelona, Hamburg or Marseille.

Traditional film, digital or even pinhole photographs, I like to try every kind of form possible. This activity allows me to understand better how light interferes with the subject, that is to say mostly architecture and by extension, cities. I don't deliberately try to harmonize the shots I take, but I generally like to capture facades, textures, perspectives, and lights of the cities I visit.

Graphic Design svnsbg

What : Personal visual identity Where : ? When : 2014 Graphic design, as well as industrial design, is one of the fields that calls out my interest for well-finished objects. At the end of my studies, during which I made my best to display my works the clearest and most presentable as possible, I felt I had to do the same to introduce myself to the working world. These few examples are the result of a visual identity research I made in order to present my character, my works and my experiences. I am however perpetually trying to improve it, because I feel the purpose of an architect is to always do better. > ATTRACTIONS > svnsbg

This started with the design of a logo, which I believe was a manner to sum up my identity. Svn / sb / g is for Sven / SĂŠbastien / Gutleben : the characteristic of a person mixed within three geographic origins / scales : Denmark / France / Alsace. The number 3 is by the way quite interesting, as long as it is the number related to stability, to balance. These initials take place on three faces of a cube, a simple volume. But these three faces hide a more complex identity inspired by several fields, which feed the architectural reflexion that characterises me. The whole is supplied with a few cups of coffee.
