Persons with the following qualifications plus YIC of S-VYÁSA are eligible to apply: i) A candidate who has passed a Master's Degree in Arts, Commerce, Science, Education, Business Administration, M.Phil from any recognized University, recognized as equivalent thereto securing not less than 55% marks in the aggregate of Master's degree as a whole. ii) A candidate who has passed BAMS/ BUMS/ MBBS/ BSMS/ BHMS/ BNYS/ BE/ B.Tech from any University recognized as equivalent thereto securing not less than 55% marks in the aggregate of that degree as a whole. iii) The candidates mentioned at para-II above should satisfy the requirement of one year job experience, before registration to PhD course. 2. Objectives The objectives of this PhD programme is to unearth the hidden secrets of our ancient yoga and spiritual lore and study its usefulness and efficacy for modern man through rigorous theoretical and experimental research in various fields of modern science, technology, medicine, management, education, physiology including neuro-physiology, psychology, parapsychology, economics, jurisprudence, sociology, arts, music, painting, dance, drama, history, sports, Samskøta, etc. 3. Selection Based on the information given in the application form, teaching and research experience they possess and the synopsis of the proposed research (meant only for assessment of the research aptitude and capacities of the students and is not binding on the part of the students and the S-VYÁSA that they should do research only in tune with what they have submitted as the proposal), the candidates will be called for a detailed interview by the selection committee of S-VYÁSA. In extraordinary cases the selection committee may choose to select the candidates directly without any interview. The decision of the selection committee will be final. The candidates seeking financial assistance would make a separate application in the prescribed form and based on the same, they may be called for an interview for deciding the type of assistance offered by S-VYÁSA.

ADMISSIONS 2009-10
4. Course credits If the candidates do not possess the necessary background in yoga as prescribed in the eligibility criteria of S-VYÁSA, they can choose to complete the credits by attending the courses offered by S-VYÁSA or through Distance education program offered by SVYÁSA or choose to study by themselves and appear for an examination. Students who have the necessary background of the courses or have undergone similar courses equivalent to the prescribed courses may get a credit transfer or the selection committee may ask them to write an examination and/or conduct a practical examination. Only after successful completion of these non-credit courses that their admission will be confirmed for the PhD. It is then that suitable guides and co-guide(s) will be fixed based on their interest, the availability of guides and resources in their respective divisions. Each student will have a guide and one or more co-guides. Generally, guide will be from the field of their research and the co-guide from Yoga. In case, the main guide feels it necessary to include a superspecialist in his field, the student will have the third co-guide. VC will also set up a Doctoral Committee for monitoring the progress of the student. Based on the suggestions of their respective guides and their interests, the students have to choose courses from the electives offered by several divisions in S-VYÁSA to get in-depth understanding in yoga, their subject of research and research methodology. They have to complete 30 credits of course requirements for PhD. 5. Research Thesis Based on their interest and that of the guides, the candidates will start working on the synopsis of their research. They should submit their synopsis before the end of the very next trimester after completion of the course credits. The Doctoral Committee will set up a panel of examiners from among the guides and two more from other divisions of SVYÁSA for a synopsis presentation. The students will take the suggestions of the panel and finalize their thesis synopsis and submit to the Doctoral Committee for registration. The registrar based on the recommendations of the Doctoral Committee will register the students for PhD in their respective Divisions. The students will then conduct the research and submit the thesis to the Doctoral Committee whenever it is ready. The minimum duration will be three years from the date of registration to the PhD. The maximum duration will be 8 years in case of nonresidential candidates and 5 years for residential candidates. There will be a systematic review of the progress made by the candidates and the students should submit trimester progress reports to the Doctoral Committee. The Doctoral Committee will accord a satisfactory note within 30 days after the submission of the progress

report or warn the candidates initially and later based on the recommendations of the Doctoral Committee. The registrar can withdraw the registration if the progress of the candidate is found unsatisfactory. And the decision of the registrar/Director will be final and binding. The thesis should demonstrate original contributions in their field of research. For this purpose, as the students complete some portion of their research they are expected to present their work in conferences and such other forums and improvise the same. They will produce Internal reports of their Divisions for protection of their research. They are expected to publish their work in indexed journals to get critical reviews by the experts in their respective fields of research. Out of their research at least 3 research papers should be either published or accepted for publications in leading indexed journals before submitting their thesis. After, the student submits 5 copies of the thesis in the format prescribed by SVYĂ SA, the thesis will be sent to the panel of examiners set up by the Doctoral committee for the candidate. After getting the recommendations and comments from the panel, the Doctoral committee will instruct the students either to complete the research based on the comments received or call the students for an oral presentation and thesis defence. About an hour is allotted for the thesis presentation and the student has to defend his / her thesis in front of a panel of examiners. Only after successful completion of this presentation as adjudged by the panel, the candidate will submit the final thesis and the degree will be awarded in the next convocation. A provision certificate will be given soon after the thesis submission. 6. Syllabus Total 100 credits: Theory (20 Credits), Practice (10 Credits) and Thesis (70 Credits). Theory and Practices can be chosen from the Electives offered by the Division related to the thesis work.
