THE SOUTHWESTERN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE looks back at the 2013-14 academic year as one of the most historical seasons in our league’s history spotlighted by achievements on and off the field. Our amazing year was jump started by the league’s presence returning to the city in which it was established. In May 29, 2013, the Council of Presidents and Chancellors voted unanimously to relocate the Toyota SWAC Football Championship and Basketball Tournament to Houston, Texas. There was a significant increase in the attendance of our football championship and basketball tournaments. Southern and Jackson State, two programs that played in the first ever SWAC Championship game in 1999, sparked our move to Houston. The game’s attendance ranked third all time at 38,985. In addition, the championship experienced its first double overtime. The basketball tournament capped the winter sports with numbers increasing 23 percent from the previous year - reaching 45,390 for the total SWAC experience. The attendance from the tournament games totaled 33,836, receiving an increase of more than 12,000 from last year. As we moved our football championship to Reliant Stadium (NRG Stadium) and the basketball tournament to the Toyota Center, we can also applaud the venues for our conference championships as they were great hosts in providing a state-of-the-art and memorable experience for our student athletes. The soccer championship was played at Houston Amateur Sports Park, the training facility for the MLS Houston Dynamo. Bowling was held at the Bowling International Training and Research Center (Arlington, Texas), which is home of the USBC and the sport’s history. To end the conference championships, the baseball tournament was held inside New Orleans MLB Urban Youth Academy at Wesley Barrow Stadium. The conference has always been linked in with MLB’s UYA and Urban Invitational. It was great to extend our relationship with MLB as host to our baseball finale. In September, on behalf of the Council of Presidents and Chancellors, and with their approval, we introduced Howard University as a member of the SWAC for the sport of women’s soccer. We are pleased to welcome Howard and its women’s soccer team to the Southwestern Athletic Conference. They are an amazing university with a strong academic and athletic history. Our league continues to stay competitive as nine of our ten member institutions captured conference titles. In men’s cross country, Mississippi Valley State and Alabama State made it three in a row winning the women’s title again. For women’s volleyball, Alabama State won its first ever volleyball tournament, Jackson State took home soccer, and Southern tacked on its third championship game title in football. As we look at indoor and outdoor track and field, Grambling State captured both men titles and Alabama State repeated in both segments as well. GSU won its third indoor title in four years and fifth straight for the outdoor season. ASU recorded its sixth consecutive indoor championship and moved to five back-to-back crowns in outdoor competition. Our bowling title was reclaimed by Alabama A&M before Alabama State, once again, winning both men and women’s golf championships. Southern captured an unprecedented five consecutive championships in women’s tennis, along with Alcorn State winning its fourth men’s tennis championship in a six-year span. Our basketball tournament final was highlighted with the first ever men and women teams from the same schools - rivals, Texas Southern and Prairie View A&M, playing for it all. On the women’s side, PVAMU made it four in a row and Texas Southern won its first men’s basketball title since 2003. TSU came out on top in softball lifting the tournament trophy for the first time ever and Jackson State went against all odds to repeat as baseball champions for its 16th overall. When we speak of the league’s national exposure, we have to credit several television networks, SWAC Digital Network, and swac.org for bringing the competition to the homes of our loyal fans. For the year, 22 football games were televised during the regular season with 12 airing on the ESPN networks. In addition CSS, Comcast SportsNet, Fox SportsSouth, CSN Houston, and NBC carried at least one of the remaining games. In addition, eight regular season basketball games were covered by a television network including: CSS, Fox Sports and six games on ESPNU. ESPN continued to partner with the conference airing the championships for volleyball, football, bowling, softball, men and women’s basketball and baseball. Also, during the regular season, ESPNU was able to highlight one of our famed rivalries in softball - Jackson State vs. Mississippi Valley State. The growth of the SWAC Digital Network continues to enhance the brand with more than 33,000 viewers watching a SWAC game on their mobile devices, laptop or desktop computer. Within that number, 63 percent were new visitors to SDN. The addition of SDN helped lift the number of views to our primary resource swac.org. Our home website had more than one million views resulting in an increase of nearly 250,000 people who logged on to our primary resource. As our legacy continues to loom over the nation, more than several SWAC legends were, or to be, inducted into a nationally recognized hall of fame. The NFL announced Michael Strahan (Texas Southern) and Aeneas Williams (Southern) as members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame class of the 2014. They will join 13 other league legends to be enshrined in Canton, Ohio. Five football standouts were also inducted into the Black College Football Hall of Fame with the list including Strahan, Robert Brazile (Jackson State), John Stallworth (Alabama A&M), Willie Totten (Mississippi Valley State) and Marino Casem (Alcorn State - Alabama State - Southern). In the realm of baseball, Ralph Garr (Grambling State) was enshrined into the National College Baseball Hall of Fame and famed football player, Jimme Giles (Alcorn State), was inducted into Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame. We salute all or legends as they continue to honor the heritage of the Southwestern Athletic Conference. As the SWAC continues to grow, we have to thank our football championship and basketball tournament title sponsor, Toyota, for its commitment to our student-athletes and fans. We would also like to salute - Russell, Nike, Coca-Cola, AARP, and The Home Depot for their support and partnership. Last, we would like to thank our fans, student-athletes, their parents, and our member institutions for a remarkable 2013-14 season. CLINTON, Miss. – Mississippi Valley State University repeated as conference champions after capturing the 2013 Southwestern Athletic Conference Cross Country Championship at the Watson Cross Country Course of Choctaw Trails. It marked the fourth overall championship title for the Delta Devils including their third in the last four years. MVSU had three runners to finish in the top 10 totaling 66 points. Alabama State came in second scoring 81 points. Prairie View finished third (83) with Grambling State (90), Jackson State (97), Texas Southern (119), Southern (155), Alcorn State (210) and Arkansas – Pine Bluff (212) rounding out the team scores. MVSU’s Daniel Kibet won the individual crown in the men’s 8K for a consecutive year crossing the finish line at 26:28.16. As a result, he earned the SWAC Cross Country Male Athlete of the Year. His teammate, Felix Kiprop, finished second with a time of 26.28.16. Sorone Batiste (Prairie View A&M) was third (26:37.62) and Brian Alvarado (Texas Southern) crossed the line in fourth (27:23.18). Brandon Cooms (Alabama State) closed out the top five (27:27.28) to make up the AllSWAC first-team. Mississippi Valley State’s Danielle Douglas was tabbed as the SWAC Men’s Cross Country Coach of the Year. 2013-14 southwestern athletic conference - 6

SWAC WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY

SWAC CHAMPIONSHIPS / FALL SPORTS ALABAMA STATE

CLINTON, Miss. – Alabama State University claimed the 2013 Southwestern Athletic Conference Women’s Cross Country Championship at the Watson Cross Country Course of Choctaw Trails. This marked the third consecutive year the Lady Hornets captured the league’s cross country title and its seventh overall. ASU posted four of the top five runners scoring a total of 21 points. Mississippi Valley State came in second with 99 points. Jackson State finished third (135), followed by Grambling State (141), Texas Southern (145), Southern (145), Prairie View A&M (150), and Alcorn State (154). In the individual competition, MVSU’s Joyce Chumo defended her title covering the 5K course in 17:56.15. Chumo, who was also selected the SWAC Cross Country Female Athlete of the Year, finishing just seconds ahead of Alabama State’s Paige Rankin (18:20.18). Artrailia Lesane (Alabama State) was third (18:27.05) and Tatiana Etienne (Alabama State) crossed the line in fourth (19:06.55). Kim Wedderburn (Alabama State) closed out the top five (19:06.98) to round out the AllSWAC First-Team. HOUSTON, Texas - Jackson State University claimed the 2013 Southwest Athletic Confernce Soccer Tournament Championship with a 1-0 win over Alabama State at Houston Amateur Sports Park. Taylor Emerson (7-1-1) finished with three saves posting her third consecutive shutout for the tournament. She was named MVP finishing the three-game span with 12 saves. Sieâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Yara Wells scored the game winning goal during the 56th minute to hand JSU (10-9-2) its second championship in program history. The last time JSU won the SWAC title was in 2010. Well and Emerson join teammates Kimberlie Hernandez, Alexandra Gautier, and Jalana Ellis on the all-tournament team. The Lady Tigers posted 11 shots including six on goal while tallying 11 corner kicks. In its first appearance in the championship game, ASU (14-7) collected seven shots with three on goal. Kylee Hathaway (14-6-0) was charged with the loss for the Lady Hornets recording five saves for the game.

JACKSON, Miss. - Alabama State University captured its first Southwestern Athletic Conference tournament crown after edging out Alabama A&M, 3-2, in the final round of the 2013 SWAC Volleyball Tournament the Lee Williams Athletics and Assembly Center. The Lady Hornets won the match using set scores of 28-30, 25-19, 22-25, 25-21 and 18-16. SWAC Tournament MVP, Rachel Smith, powered ASU (25-15) with a double-double posting 19 kills, while finishing with 14 digs. Ellyn Jones registered a double-double with 19 assists and 13 digs. Myla Marshall tacked on 15 kills and Brooke Beasley paced ASU with 36 assists. The Lady Hornets defense totaled nine blocks with Luiza Griz recording 15 digs to help the back line. Ashley Forman led AAMU (11-21) with a double-double, posting a match high 55 assists to couple 20 digs. Maria Ramos contributed a double-double to assist AAMU, she collected 11 kills and 11 digs. Savannah Blackiston finished with 18 kills and nine digs. Kyanna Sales registered a double-double with 11 kills and 12 digs. Leslie Ekpe added 11 kills and Rebecca Cortez gathered 21 digs to lead the Lady Bulldogs.

HOUSTON, Texas - Dray Joseph connected with Lee Doss for a 16-yard touchdown pass to hand Southern University a 34-27 double overtime victory over Jackson State in the 2013 Toyota SWAC Football Championship inside Reliant Stadium. SU (9-4) wins its third Southwestern Athletic Conference championship game in school history in fron of a crowd of 38,985. After SU scored, during the ensuing drive, Tommy Gooden stepped out of bounds to negate what would have been a five-yard touchdown pass from Clayton Moore to help JSU (7-4) even the game. Both teams failed to score in the first overtime. SWAC Championship Defensive MVP, Anthony Balancier, intercepted Moore to end JSU’s first attempt in overtime. He led SU’s defense with 11 tackles to complement a forced fumble and two break ups. Gregory Pittman’s 37-yard field goal attempt was blocked by Conard Brown, keeping the Tigers’ alive. Joseph, SWAC co-offensive postseason and game MVP, finished 27-of-46 for 337 yards passing with three touchdowns, including a pair to Willie Quinn, to power the Jaguars. Joseph hit Quinn for a 34-yard touchdown to give Southern a 10-0 lead.

After the teams traded field goals, Moore went 5-for5 leading the Tigers 73 yards in just 54 seconds. He then followed with a 25-yard touchdwon pass to Zachary Pendleton to trim the lead 13-10 at halftime. Moore completed 21-of-42 with two interceptions and a pair of touchdowns. Pendleton hauled in six cathces for 97 yards. Joseph and Quinn connected to give Southern a 2010 lead with 4:59 left in the third quarter. Doss and Quinn combined for 267 yards receiving. Doss collected 10 receptions and Quinn gathered seven. JSU retaliated with 14 points when Moore hit Pendleton again for a 28-yard strike before Antonio Sutton collected an 11-yard fumble recovery to take the lead, 27-24. The Jaguars responded when Darrius Coleman capped a 13-play drive with a one-yard touchdown run to give SU a 27-24 slight advantage with 4:47 remaining. Ryan Deising hit a 37-yard field goal for the Tigers as time expired to send the game into overtime. Ryan Griffin spotlighted JSU’s defense with a game high 15 tackles including eight solo and two for a loss. SU finished with 512 total offensive yards and JSU closed out the game with 381.

SWAC CHAMPIONSHIPS / WINTER SPORTS GRAMBLING STATE

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The 2014 Southwestern Athletic Conference Indoor Championship ended with Grambling State lifting the title at the Birmingham Crossplex. The Tigers have now won four out of the last five league championships. GSU head coach Bertram Lovell was named the 2014 Indoor Track and Field Men’s Coach of the Year. Grambling State picked up the win with 98 points with Alabama State finishing second with 70 points. Mississippi Valley State notched third place in the team standings with 79 pints. Rounding out the final team standings include: Prairie View A&M (76), Texas Southern (72), Southern (65), Jackson State (52), Arkansas-Pine Bluff (50), Alabama A&M (15) and Alcorn State (14). Mississippi Valley State’s Daniel Kibet led was crowned Most Outstanding Track Performer for the second consecutive year. D’Wayne Houston of Southern was tabbed Most Outstanding Field Performer. Weight Throw / Shot put D’Wayne Houston (SU) took the crown in the weight throw 17.88m (58-08.00) and shot put 15.61m (51-02.75). 60m Hurdles Bentrell McGee (JSU) clocked in at 7.92 for first. 60m / 200m Devin Jenkins (SU) came in first place in the 60m with a record of 6.66 before winning the 200m at 20.92. 1600m

Matthew Agard claimed first place for UAPB with a time of 4:25.09. 400m Jamael McTear (GSU) came in first place at 48.20. 800m Darius Taylor (GSU) came in first place at 1:55.78. Triple Jump Preston Woodard (PVAMU) won the triple jump with a leap of 15.53m (50-11.50). 3000m / 5000m Run Kibet (MVSU) crossed the line at 16.20.30 for a first place finish in the 5000m after winning the 3000m (8:59.34). Pole Vault Christopher Amisial (ASU) and Jawalyn Brooks (TSU) tied for first place 4.15m (13-07.25) . 1600m Relay Alabama State earned the first place spot in the 4x400m relay at 3:15.42. Long Jump Afton McClammy (AAMU) came away with the title-winning jump of 5.97m (19-07.00). Distance Medley Relay Mississippi Valley State won the event with a time of 10:28.65. High Jump Pierre Shepherd (PVAMU) was the winner in the high jump, clearing 6-09.00 (2.02m).

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Alabama State University made it six in a row at the 2014 Southwestern Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Birmingham Crossplex. The Lady Hornets have now won five in a row making it their 10th overall conference title. Ninfa Barnard of Arkansas-Pine Bluff was named Most Outstanding Track Performer for the women after winning the 3000m in 10:00.34 and the mile in 5:03.99 while Morgan Simmons of Grambling State earned Most Outstanding Field Performer. Head Coach Ritchie Bean was again named SWAC Indoor Track and Field Women’s Coach of the Year. The Lady Hornets captured the title with 212 points followed by Texas Southern with 86 points. Prairie View A&M rounded the top three with 71.5 points. Closing out the team scoring - Southern (70), Arkansas-Pine Bluff (53), Grambling State (42.5), Mississippi Valley State (34), Jackson State (28), Alcorn State (14) and Alabama A&M (9). 60m Hurdles Tershauna Broadnax (SU) darted to a first place finish in the 60m (8.51). 60m / 200m Dash Latrice Lee (ASU) won the events at 7.59 (60m) and 24.59 (200m). 1600m / 3000m Ninfa Barnard (UAPB) won both events clocking in at 5:03.99 and 10:00.34.

Pole Vault Quinta Collier (ASU) won the event clearing 2.81m (9-02.50. 400m Alexis Ferebee (ASU) finished first at 55.27. Shot Put Sireta Roach (UAPB) repeated as the winner with a throw of 14.08m (46-02.50). 800m Tatiana Etienne (ASU) was first at 2:12.21. Weight Throw Ashley Parker (PVAMU) and Samone Coaxum (GSU) tied for first in the weight throw with a mark of 14.38m (47-02.25). Triple Jump Kadijah Gordon (ASU) captured first at 11.98m (39-03.75). 5000m Paige Rankin (ASU) shattered her own record clocking in at 17:38.59. 4x400m / Distance Medley Relay ASU took home the first at 3:43 in the 1600m relay and 12:08.5 in the DMR. HOUSTON, Texas - Prairie View A&M picked up its fourth consecutive tournamen title with a 63-58 upset over in-state rival and No. 2 seed Texas Southern at Toyota Center. Jeanette Jackson fueled PVAMU (14-17), scoring 22 points, shooting a perfect 10 from the free throw line. She added four assists and one steal before being crowned the 2014 Toyota SWAC Basketball Tournament’s Most Valuable Player.

This season’s SWAC Women’s Basketball Player of the Year, Jazzmin Parker, scored 20 points to pace the Lady Tigers while Alexus Johnson scored 16 points and was one of five to make the All-Tournament team. Second Team All-SWAC recipient, Morgan Simmons, snatched a game-high 18 boards in the loss.

LaReahn Washington posted 10 of PVAMU’s 31 points in the first half and finished with 22. The Lady Panthers trailed by five with 8:52 left on the clock in the first half but a three-pointer by Washington and a jumper by Alexus Parker gave the Lady Panthers their first lead of the half. A three by TSU’s Jazzmin Parker lifted the Lady Tigers to within one but Washington knocked down another three to put the Lady Panthers ahead 31-29 at halftime. As both teams exchanged back-to-back baskets after the break, Jackson scored to even the game at 51 with 5:38 to go in the game. The Lady Panthers jumped on a 5-0 run creating a gap that the Lady Tigers were unable to close in the final minutes. For the first time in program history, TSU (20-12) made its debut in the SWAC Basketball Tournament. HOUSTON, Texas - Last year’s tournament champions, Prairie View A&M, picked up its fourth consecutive tournamen title with a 63-58 upset over in-state rival and No. 2 seed Texas Southern at Toyota Center. Jeanette Jackson fueled PVAMU (14-17), scoring 22 points, shooting a perfect 10 from the free throw line. She added four assists and one steal before being crowned the 2014 Toyota SWAC Basketball Tournament’s Most Valuable Player.

ALABAMA A&M

ARLINGTON, Texas - After making their third appearance in the SWAC Bowling Championship round, Alabama A&M was crowned as this year’s 2014 SWAC Bowling Champions on Sunday, March 23 at the Bowling International Training and Research Center. This is AAMU’s first championship since the 2010 season and third overall. Their first came in 2007. With this being a double-elimination tournament, top seeded ALabama A&M only needed to win once. Despite it being their first visit to the championship match, Alabama State did not make it easy for its arch-rival to take home the win as the Lady Hornets won the first match (4-2). The Lady Bulldogs responded with a 4-2 victory of their own, claiming the SWAC Tournament Championship crown with a total pinfall of 1226. AAMU’s Nicole Kleutgen was tabbed as this year’s Most Valuable Player. Kleutgen struck every shot but two in the final deciding match. The 2014 title marks the first for Alabama A&M Head Coach Alexandra McIntyre who took over this year for Jeff McCorvey.

ALEXANDRIA, La. - Alabama State University defended its championship title capturing the 2014 Southwestern Athletic Conference Womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Golf Championship at Links on the Bayou. ASU followed a 306 for day one with a stroke count of 312 in the final round for its final score of 618. The Lady Hornets had six players finish in the top eight overall while making the all-conference team. ASU was powered by championship MVP Jenelle Kraakman. Kraakman retained her top performer title shooting 4-over at 148 finishing 1-over-par 72 for the final round. After finishing the opening round in third place, Texas Southern scored a 332 to close out the championship in second place. Kassandra Rivera led the Lady Tigers shooting a 150 after opening the championship shooting 1-over par. She finished the championship second overall. Adriana Trevino also finished in the top 10 at 168 for TSU. Jackson State (679), Prairie View A&M (957), and Mississippi Valley State (1046) rounded out the final team standings. JSU was led by top 10 leaderboard performances from Katie Griffith (162) and Stevie Booker (168).

ALEXANDRIA, La. - Branson Ferrier shot 12 under to help guide Alabama State University to its third consecutive crown after winning the 2014 Southwestern Athletic Conference Men’s Golf Championship at Oak Wings Golf Club.

Texas Southern notched third place with a team score of 966. Arkansas-Pine Bluff (966), Alabama A&M (331), Prairie View A&M (1039), Alcorn State (1061) and Mississippi Valley State (1454) rounded out the team standings.

As a unit, ASU shot 865 including a 291 in the final round and had four players named to the all-conference team. Ferrier, Francis Berthiaume, Yann Pfeiffer and Ian Mmbando finished in the top 10.

AAMU’s Phillip Fitzgerald captured SWAC Freshman of the Year honors.

Ferrier finished first overall earning SWAC Player of the Year honors after shooting 1-under par 72 on the final day. He recorded a 68 on day one followed by a 65 for the second round, completing the three-day event with a stroke count of 204. He made par on 31 holes while recording 16 birdies and an eagle for the entire championship. For the remainder of the team standings, Jackson State finished second with 908 and was led by Josh McCormick. McCormick shot a 224 to lead JSU and was joined on the top 10 leaderboard with teammates Kyle Borderstine, Aaron Rhaney, and Rovanta Young.

NEW ORLEANS, La. - Darnesha Moore defeated Akshatha Ananth to hand Southern the 2014 Southwestern Athletic Conference Tennis Championship with a 4-1 win over Jackson State at City Park / Pepsi Tennis Center. Moore earned tournament MVP after capturing the win at the No. 4 singles position winning, 6-3, 6-1. Her victory sealed SU’s (10-8) fifth consecutive women’s tennis conference tournament crown. The Lady Jaguars opened the match 1-0 after D. Moore and Gabrielle Moore, along with, Camara Davis and Morgan Taylor, took 8-3 wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. Soon after, Laura Syori (No. 1) defeated Angie Condorelli, 6-2, 6-2, and Kendall Bunch (No.5) defeated Julia Angermann, 6-2, 6-4, taking their matches in two sets to help pull out the victory. JSU (9-14) plugged in its only win for the match behind Kessica Jayapalan’s 6-4, 6-1, win over Camera Davis in No. 6 singles. The Lady Jaguars are now winners of 13 titles and the first team to win five consecutively.

NEW ORLEANS, La. - SWAC Tennis Freshman of the Year, Nischay Rewal’s victory over Takura Mlambo, lifted Alcorn State to a 4-2 win over Alabama State to claim the 2014 Southwestern Athletic Conference Men’s Tennis Championship at the City Park / Pepsi Tennis Center. Rewal earned the victory in No. 3 singles play with set scores of 6-3 and 7-5. ALC (9-8) stayed unbeaten in league competition winning its eighth championship title overall and fourth in a six-year span. After dropping doubles play to ASU (7-12), the Braves totaled wins from tournament MVP Ernesto Santillan (No. 1), Nikita Kostiko (No.5) and Garry Amor (No.6). Santillan earned his match with sets of 6-0 and 6-3 while Kostiko defeated his opponent - 6-2, 6-2. Amor followed with 6-2, 6-3, to take his match to give ALC a cushion for the deciding point. The Hornets claimed the doubles match-up behind the duo of Dylan Cleary and Jarred Thompson, 8-6 along with Digvijay Naruka and Mlambo, 8-5. Adam Coyne picked up ASU’s only victory in singles defeating Max Tkachenko, 6-2, 6-4.

The Lady Hornets secured the top spot earning them their fifth consecutive conference outdoor championship with a point total of 236.50. This also marks the second straight season that ASU takes home the SWAC Triple Crown (Cross Country, Indoor Track and Outdoor Track and Field). Southern finished in second place with 130.50, Texas Southern came in third with 128 points, Prairie View finished fourth with 77.50 and Grambling State rounded out the top five with 56 points. Mississippi Valley State (43), Alcorn State (40.50, Jackson State (34), Arkansas Pine Bluff (29) and Alabama A&M (15) completed the scoring. Individually, Sireta Roach of Arkansas-Pine Bluff earned Most Outstanding Field Performer honor rolling up 22 points through four events. Artrailia LaSane of Alabama State claimed the Most Outstanding Track Performer accolades, finishing with 34 points. She took first place in the 1500m and Steeplechase. Other top finishers included Tershauna Broadnax (Southern) winning the 100m hurdles. Broadnax was also one of four to help the Lady Jaguars win the 4x100 Meter Relay (46.20). Alexis Ferebee from Alabama State took home the honors in the 100m dash (11.52) with teammates LeSane, Santina Williams,

and Tatiana Etienne claiming the 1500m at (4:38.95), the 400m (54.68), and the 800m (2:10.21) respectively. Southern’s Valerie Thames claimed first place in the 400m hurdles (1:00.60) with Joyce Chumo earning the win in the 5000m(17:56.21). Texas Southern’s Terralyn Johnson finished first in the triple jump with a distance of 40-03.50 (12.28m), Alicia Terrell (Alabama State) won the high jump 5-07.25 (1.71m) Sharonda Bryant threw a distance of 47.35 to secure a win in the discus throw. Alabama State’s 4x400m relay team capped off the evening finishing first in the event with a time of 3:37.93. Joyce Chumo of Mississippi Valley State came in first place (37:59.88) in the 10,000m. Katelyn Roth of Southern once again claimed the title in the hammer throw shattering her record of last season’s mark of 48.41m with a toss of 51.78. Mahogany Cullins of Prairie View won the pole vault for the second straight season clearing a height of 10-02.50. Alcorn State’s Tatiana David (4532) claimed the heptathlon. Other Individual winners crowned included, Arkansas Pine Bluff’s Sireta Roach winning the shot put with a distance of 14.12m. Shala Johnson of Alcorn State earned a first place finish in the long jump at 19-06.75 with Lori Davis winning the javelin throw at 128-10 feet (39.26m). Artrailia LaSane once again won the 3000m steeplechase clocking in at 11:07.27.

SWAC CHAMPIONSHIPS / SPRING SPORTS GRAMBLING STATE

NEW ORLEANS, La. - Grambling State claimed their sixth straight conference title at the 2014 Southwestern Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Tad Gormley Stadium. GSU scored 141 points to earn their 10 title overall, earning Bertram Lovell Coach of the Year honors. Southern finished the meet second with 123 points, while Prairie View was third with 109 points. Mississippi Valley State was fourth with 104 points and Alabama State rounded out the top five with 86 points. Texas Southern was sixth (81 pts), Arkansas Pine Bluff seventh (72 pts), Alabama A&M and Jackson State eighth (41 pts). Alcorn State finished 10th (21 pts). Individually, Erick Thomas from Arkansas Pine Bluff was the championship’s Most Outstanding Field Performer scoring 30 points. Thomas won the discus throw with a distance of 163.-02 (49.73) and the javelin. Meanwhile, Daniel Kibet of Mississippi Valley State was the meet’s Most Outstanding Runner making it the second straight year. Kibet earned a total of 33 points. Kibet won the 5000m (16:17.87) and the 10,000m (34:03.73). Other top finishers included Devin Jenkins from Southern winning the 100m (10.06) along with the 200m (20.13). Jenkins was also on the 4x100m relay team that earned the top spot clocking in at 40.42.

Grambling State’s Sylvester Baisden finished first in the 110m hurdles (13.88). His teammates Jamael McTear and Darius Taylor won the 400m (47.29) and the 1500m (4:06.13) respectively. Dannie Lucky (Prairie View) crossed the line first in the 400m hurdles (52.21). Meanwhile, his teammate Preston Woodard earned back to back first place honors in the triple jump with a distance of 52-06.00 (16.00m), Devauntay Brown (Alabama State) finished first in the high jump 6-09.00 (2.06m), Jawalyn Brooks of Texas Southern walked away with the highest mark in the pole vault with 14-08.75 (4.49), and Prairie View’s Sorone Batiste won the 800m (1:52.94). Arkansas Pine Bluff ended the day winning the 4x400 Meter Relay crossing the line with a time of 3:10.45. Darryl Jones (6099) claimed the Decathlon and for the second straight year, Southern’s D’Wayne Houston and Akil Bennett won the shot put and the long jump respectively. Houston won the shot put with a throw of 52-08.00 feet (16.05m) topping last season’s mark of 52-00.50 feet (15.86m). Meanwhile, Bennett came away with a mark of 2307.50 (7.20m) in the long jump. Romello Nalepa (MVSU) took home the Steeplechase for the men with a time of 9:56.79. Lee Thrasher of Alabama State won the Hammer Throw with a distance of 53.88.

DECATUR, Ala. - Texas Southern scored four runs in the sixth inning to capture its first SWAC Softball Tournament championship with a 6-3 win over defending champions Mississippi Valley State at Wilson Morgan Park. With the game tied at one heading into the bottom of fifth, TSU (32-18) took the lead when pinch runner Tiffany Marshall scored on a single by SWAC Co Freshman of the Year, Krystalani Yockman, to go out in front, 2-1. In the sixth with one out, Brianna Parker drove in Jessicsa Miller on a ground-out fielder’s choice to the shortstop to spark the Lady Tigers. With Princess Daniels at third, and Chelsea Guenther at second, Thomasina Garza picked up a walk to load the bases. Garza finished 1-of-2 at the plate with a run scored. She was named tournament MVP after recording three home runs, a double, and nine RBI. She hit .538 in four games while scoring five runs. Yockman singled again to score Daniels before Briana Simpson slapped a double to drive in a pair of runs to extend TSU’s lead, 6-1.Miller, Daniels, and Yockman registered multiple hits for the Lady Tigers. Miller was perfect at the plate with a run scored, Daniels went 2-for-3 with a run scored and Yockman hit 3-of-4 with two RBI. Simpson finished with two RBI on one hit.

Madison Staton (12-6) picked up the win throwing six innings. She gave up five hits, three earned runs, while recording four strikeouts. Staton finished with a tournament high, 10 strikouts through four games. In the seventh, MVSU (14-16) began to rally and posted a threat after Omeshia Moffett doubled to left field. Natalia Covarrubias followed with a double to drive in Moffett before Sammantha Jimenez came in relief for Staton. Brandi Williams singled to left center to keep the Devilettes alive, with no outs, scoring Covarrubias to close the gap, 6-3. On the next at bats, Jimenez forced a fly out, follow by a strike out and ground out to the mound to seal the game. Covarrubias led MVSU at the plate going 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored. Relief pitcher Cassandra Rivera (5-20) suffered the loss giving up seven hits and five earned runs in two innings. Tenna Patterson spotlighted the Devilettes with eight strikeouts for the tournament. Texas Southern captures its second overall title and will receive the SWAC’s automatic bid to the NCAA Softball Tournament.

NEW ORLEANS, La. - Jackson State repeated as SWAC Baseball Tournament champions with a 9-8 win over top seeded Alabama State on Sunday at MLB UYA at Wesley Barrow Stadium. It’s the fourth time JSU has won back-to-back league championships and its 16th overall. With one out, a runner on first, and facing the potential winning run at the plate twice, relief pitcher Alex Juday (3) struck out back-to-back runners to secure the come from behind win for JSU (31-23) and earn the save. Starting pitcher, Desmond Russell (9-4), was named tournament MVP, finishing with three strike outs for the game and 11 for the tournament. For the game, he gave up six earned runs in five innings on the bump. Trailing 5-2, the Tigers posted runs to take control of the game. Charles Tillery led off with single before scoring on Stephen Curtis triple to right center. Aneko Knowles followed with a sacrifice fly to bring in Curtis. Gary Thomas singled to center field while Russell capped the three-run inning with a single to drive in Thomas to even the game at five. Russell finished 2-for-4 with a RBI and a run scored. Tillery hit 3-of-4 with a RBI and two runs. Knowles and Melvin Rodriguez posted two RBI apiece.

After five innings, JSU trailed 6-5, but hammered three runs to regain the lead in the sixth. Russell and Tilur Smith walked to put runners on first and second, Rodriguez singled to left field with a throwing error putting him on second, allowing Russell to score, and moving Smith to third to knot the score at six. Jose Cruz registered a single to score a run and Bryce Taylor’s sacrifice fly added another to give JSU an 8-6 lead. ASU (37-20) retaliated at the bottom of the inning. Waldyvan Estrada reached first on a fielder’s choice and scored after Raul Perez slapped a shot down the left field line to narrow the gap, 8-7. The Tigers scored at the top of the eighth to stay out front 9-7, Richard Amion hit a home run to keep the Hornets alive. However, following the dinger, Ceasar Rivera flied out, Waldyvan Estrada struck out looking, and Perez popped out to second to end the innings and cao ASU’s scoring. Estrada and Dexter Price hit home runs early in the game to give ASU a 5-2 lead. Price finished 2-of-5 with three RBI and a run scored. Estarda had two RBI going 2-for-5 with three runs scored. Hunter McIntosh (3-3) was saddled with the loss facing three batters on the day and giving up three runs.

SWAC CHAMPIONSHIPS / SWAC HALL OF FAME INDUCTION

HOUSTON, Texas - The 2013 SWAC Hall of Fame class was inducted during the annual reception at the Westin Galleria Hotel. The event kicked off championship weekend for 2013 Toyota SWAC Football Championship. The 2013 Hall of Fame class included Reggie Barlow, an All-American wide receiver for Alabama State who is currently head football coach at his alma mater - Alabama State. Carol Cummings, a record-setting sprinter at Prairie View A&M and a member of the first two SWAC women’s indoor and outdoor championship teams. Jimmy Jones and Bob Hopkins, All-American basketball players at Grambling State, played professionally. Richard Myles, a two-sport All-SWAC performer at Alcorn State who was also a member of the dean’s list. Jim Osborne, an All-SWAC defensive tackle at Southern played 13 seasons with the Chicago Bears in the NFL. Charles Ruth, a five-time All-SWAC distance runner at Alcorn State, coached Mississippi Valley State’s men’s cross country and track and field teams to unprecedented success. The class was also recognized by U.S. Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, 18th District, alongside State Representative Dr. Alma A. BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Southwestern Athletic Conference has released its 2013 All-SWAC Women’s Soccer teams with Alabama State trio, Aaliyah Lewis, Ariela Lewis and Kylee Hathaway sweeping the individual accolades. The selections were voted on by the league’s head coaches and sports information directors. Twenty-five player’s total this year’s post season teams with freshman forward Aaliyah Lewis receiving Offensive Player of the Year. Lewis’ twin sister, midfielder Ariela, was selected Freshman of the Year while junior goalkeeper Kylee Hathaway was tabbed Defensive Player of the Year. All three helped lead Alabama State to the program’s first SWAC Eastern Division crown with a 12-6 record and 4-0 mark in the conference. ASU closed out the regular season with a nine-game win streak.

Alabama State led the post season honors with seven student-athletes selected while six were named to the first team. Jackson State and Mississippi Valley State followed with three picks each. Prairie View A&M and Arkansas-Pine Bluff had two representatives with Texas Southern rounding the list out with one. Aaliyah Lewis, Ariela Lewis and Kylee Hathaway also garnered first team honors and were joined by teammates Anastasia McCleary, Iita Pienimaki and Alexandria Cannon. The first team also includes: Ana Huertas (Alabama A&M), Nykosi Simmons (Mississippi Valley State), Rayana Speight (Jackson State), Molly Stone (Arkansas-Pine Bluff) and Angie Guillory (Prairie View A&M).

Aaliyah Lewis led the SWAC and the Lady Hornets in goals (16), shots (61), shots per game (3.39), points (38), and points per game (2.1). Ariela Lewis topped the league in assists (9) and matched her sister in the SWAC in game-winning goals with three. After completing last year on the SWAC Soccer Second Team, Hathaway finished 2013 with 107 saves and tied a league best in shutouts with five. 2013-14 southwestern athletic conference - 54

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – To end the 2013 volleyball regular season, Amber Bennett (Alabama State), Luiza Griz (Alabama State), Candyce Alexander (Prairie View A&M) and Kali Fluke (Texas Southern) headline this year’s volleyball postseason honors receiving the Southwestern Athletic Conference top accolades. Bennett was tabbed Player of the Year with teammate Griz earning Defensive Player of the Year for a consecutive term. Alexander was selected the league’s top newcomer while Fluke was voted Freshman of the Year. The awards, along with first and second-team AllSWAC honors, are voted on by league head coaches and sports information directors. In all, eastern division champions Alabama State had the most selections with five including four on the first-team. Western division champions, Texas Southern, followed with three selections with two named to the second team. Prairie View A&M and Arkansas-Pine Bluff each notched two picks with Alabama A&M, Jackson State, and Southern rounding out the count with one player apiece. Fifteen players earned postseason honors with two student-athletes tied for a spot on the second team. Bennett finished top three in the SWAC in hitting percentage, kills, and blocks. She led the league with a .346 hitting percentage finishing second in kills, averaging 2.86 per set, while totaling a league best with 346. She also ranked third in blocks per set with .87 while registering a SWAC best with 105 total. She received eight weekly league awards this season garnering the

offensive nod on four occasions while earning the same number for the defensive honor. Her play helped ASU rank second in hitting percentage with .200. Griz earns her second straight SWAC Defensive Player of the Year honor after receiving the title’s preseason honor. She helped ASU lead the SWAC in opponent hitting percentage holding teams to a .154 average. Griz led the team in digs with 348 for a 3.00 average per set. For the regular season, she was named defensive player of the week twice receiving consecutive honors. Alexander ended the regular season as one of PVAMU’s top contributors across the team’s statistical ranks. She led PVAMU in kills with 246 averaging 2.22 per set. She also ranks third on the team in service aces (21), blocks (57), and hitting percentage (.147). Fluke becomes the second freshman from TSU to earn the award following teammate Robyn Shannon who won SWAC Freshman of the Year in 2012. She helped lead TSU to a conference best .211 team hitting percentage. She currently ranks second in the SWAC in the same category hitting .324 with 167 kills. Her 2.65 kills per set stands third in the conference. Bennett, Griz and Fluke join the All-SWAC Volleyball First Team which includes: Tiara Kelley (Alabama State), Robyn Shannon (Texas Southern), Myla Marshall (Alabama State), and Ashley Forman (Alabama A&M).

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Southwestern Athletic Conference announced its postseason football awards in voting conducted by league head coaches and sports information directors. The conference made the announcement prior to the 2013 Toyota SWAC Football Championship on Saturday, Dec. 7, at Reliant Stadium in Houston. Southern senior quarterback Dray Joseph and Alcorn State senior running back Arnold Walker were named Co-Offensive Player of the Year. Arkansas-Pine Bluff senior linebacker Jer-ryan Harris was tabbed Defensive Player of the Year while Alabama State’s redshirt freshman linebacker Kourtney Berry landed the Newcomer of the Year award. Rounding out the postseason accolades, Jackson State defensive lineman Javancy Jones was tagged Freshman of the Year. Alcorn State and Alabama State led the way with 10 selections apiece with landing five players on the first team. Jackson State was second with eight picks with four receiving first-team honors. The count includes Alabama A&M and Prairie View A&M with six apiece, Southern and Texas Southern each with three, and Mississippi Valley State posting both selections on the first team. Arkansas-Pine Bluff and Grambling State close out the list with a player on this year’s postseason squad. Joseph led Southern to an 8-4 overall record (7-2 SWAC) and its first Western Division title since 2004. He helped SU post its first winning season since 2009 becoming the school’s alltime leader in passing yards. Joseph finished with a league best, 3,236 passing yards. He leads the SWAC in passing yards per game (269.7) and passing touchdowns (27). Joseph passed for over 200 or more yards in 10-of-12 games during the regular season. Walker capped his collegiate career leading Alcorn State and the SWAC in rushing yards (1,191) and rushing touchdowns

(16). He averaged 5.3 yards per carry and led the SWAC averaging 99.2 rushing yards per game. He finished second in the SWAC in scoring (96) and ranks fourth in the conference in all-purpose yards (1,368). He claimed Alcorn State’s 30-year old all-time career rushing record with 2,806 yards. He also took the record for most points scored in a season. For the year, he rushed for at least 100 yards in 7-of-12 games recording 100 or more yards in six straight contests. He helped power Alcorn State to a 9-3 record (7-2 SWAC), the Braves’ first winning season since 2006 and nine-win campaign since 1984. Harris anchored UAPB’s defense finishing atop the SWAC in tackles with 107 (56 solo). He currently sits sixth in the FCS. To close out the season, he gathered three tackles for loss (7 yards), one quarterback hurry, and a fumble recovery returned for a 37-yard touchdown. In his first season on the field for JSU, Jones recorded 48 tackles (21 solo) to go along with a team high, 12 tackles for loss. He captured five sacks, two pass deflections, a forced fumble, blocked kick and a defensive touchdown (punt block recovery). Early in the year, he was nominated for the Jerry Rice Award. (FCS Freshman of the Year). In his first collegiate season after responding from an injury that applied a redshirt year, Berry posted a team-leading 107 total tackles (57 solo, 48 assists) in the 11 games. In addition, he complemented his stops with seven sacks and 11.5 tackles for a loss. He also finished the year with an interception, two fumble recoveries, three pass break ups and two quarterback hurries. Berry was named the SWAC Defensive Player of the Week once, the league’s Newcomer of the Week twice, while spotlighting a defense that finished second in the SWAC in points allowed (25.8). He was also selected as a nominee for the Jerry Rice Award (FCS Freshman of the Year.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -The Southwestern Athletic Conference announced its 2014 SWAC Women’s Basketball All-Conference teams and individual award winners on Monday, March 10. Texas Southern’s Jazzmin Parker was tabbed SWAC Player of the Year, while Quentori Alford of Alabama State captured Defensive Player of the Year honors. TSU’s Sarah Williams collected Newcomer of the Year and Mississippi Valley State’s Ashley Beals was honored as the SWAC Freshman of the Year. Head Coach Sandy Pugh of Southern University received the vote as the league’s Coach of the Year. All selections were voted on by the Conference’s coaches and sports information directors. Pugh was tabbed SWAC Women’s Basketball Coach of the Year after leading the lady Jaguars to a 16-2 conference record and her third regular season championship title in the last five years. After spending her first year as a TSU Lady Tiger, Parker led the league in scoring all season and carried TSU to its first three victories on the season. Parker scored more than 30 points in five games this year, which was a league best. She earned SWAC Player of the Week honors four times during the season while earning a spot on the first-team All-SWAC.

Alford picked up Defensive Player of the Year after leading ASU in rebounds, averaging 8.4 boards per game, landing second in the league in the category. She played a strong role in the Lady Hornets’ defense, averaging a conference high 2.1 blocks per game. She helped ASU take the No.1 seat in offensive and defensive rebounds, rebound percentage and block shots in the SWAC. Alford was tabbed SWAC Player of the Week this year, earning one of two awards for ASU. Williams becomes the second player from TSU to receive post season individual honors. The junior started in 27 of 28 games for the Lady Tigers and ranks first on the team in assists and second in the league with a total of 140, averaging 5.0 per game. Williams has two double-doubles on the season. Beals collected Freshman of the Year after posting three double-double’s this year. She averaged 10.1 points and a team-best 6.2 rebounds per game. Beals led the Devilettes in scoring with double figures in six games this season, and carried MVSU to their only non-conference victory with 19 points in a 68-58 win over Eastern Kentucky. Joining Parker and Alford on the All-SWAC First Team include: Jeanette Jackson (Prairie View A&M), Jasmine Jefferson (Southern), and Ayanna Hardy-Fuller (Jackson State).

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Birmingham, Ala. – The Southwestern Athletic Conference has recognized Texas Southern forward Aaric Murray as its Southwestern Athletic Conference Player and Defensive Player of the Year. Southern swept the final three accolades with Tre’Lun Banks receiving Freshman of the Year honors along with teammate Calvin Godfrey earning Newcomer of the Year while head coach Roman Banks was tabbed Coach of the Year. All honors including first and second team selections were voted on by the league’s head coaches and sports information directors. Murray led the SWAC in scoring for the entire regular season averaging 21.7 points per game while hauling in 7.7 rebounds per contest. He was TSU’s leading scorer in 17 of their 29 games on the year. Earlier in the year, Murray became the first NCAA Division I player taller than 6’10 to score 48 points in over a decade while also becoming the first player to connect on 20+ field goals in a game since 2011. Defensively, he blocked a league best 69 shots for an average of 2.4 per outing.

Freshmen T. Banks led SU in assists and had a 1.4 assists to turnover ratio. He notched a career high of 21 points twice and scored in double figures on 10 occasions. In his first season at SU, Godfrey averaged 13 points per game and was ranked second in the league with nine rebounds per contest. The center shot a league leading 56 percent from the field and is ranked fourth in the conference with a total of 46 blocked shots. R. Banks was named SWAC Coach of the Year after guiding the Jaguars 19-11 overall record going 15-2 in league play. His team claimed the 2013-14 SWAC regular season championship. Banks and the Jaguars won the 2013 SWAC Basketball Tournament and made an appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Joining Murray and Godfrey on the All-SWAC Men’s Basketball First Team include guards LeAntwan Luckett (Alcorn State) and Antwan Scott (Grambling State) along with forward DaVon Haynes (Arkansas-Pine Bluff).

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Southwestern Athletic Conference released its 2014 ALL-SWAC Bowling Teams with Danielle Walker (Alabama State) spotlighting the accolades receiving SWAC Bowler of the Year honors. Lynsie Rodriguez (Prairie View A&M) was named Freshman of the Year with Alabama State head coach Andrew Chatmon voted Coach of the Year. Walker captured the MVP title with a pin fall count of 5,637 in conference play to complement a 201.3 average against the league. She finished 15 games above 200 pins including five over 225 while eclipsing the 250-mark twice. She bowled her best game among the SWAC field recording a score of 284 against Alabama A&M in the SWAC West Bowling Round Up. Rodriguez garners the top freshman award after ending SWAC play with a 178.6 average while appearing in 21 conference games. She posted a pin fall count of 3,752, scoring 200 pins of more on four occasions, hitting a high of 232 in conference play. Chatmon was tabbed Coach of the Year after guiding Alabama State to a SWAC regular season crown with a 19-5 record during the leagueâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s round ups. The Lady Hornets registered a collective pin fall of 25,609 finishing ahead of the pack by more than 600 pins. ASU finished with a combine team average of 914.6 notching its best team-game high of 1,100 pins.

Currently ranked No. 19 in the NTCA Coaches Poll, ASU finished the two round-ups with an average of 195.96 and built their non-conference resume with wins over No. 3 Nebraska, No. 6 Stephen F. Austin and No. 13 Long Island. Joining Walker on the All-SWAC First Team includes: Dyanna Scott (Jackson State), Brianna LeForbes (Texas Southern), Kaila Ryan (Alabama State) and Rebecca Goodwin (Alabama A&M). The second team is comprised of Camille Collins (Alabama A&M), Briana Wells (Alabama State), Rakia Jenkins (Southern), Kaylene Adams (Southern), and Ashle Reid (Prairie View A&M). The SWAC Bowling All-Conference teams was selected among the top ten averages in league play. The top five averages were named to the first team with the bowlers ranked six through 10 completing the second team. The MVP and freshman awards were handed to the top bowlers with the best average fitting the respective criteria and must participate in 2/3 of the conference matches. The SWAC Bowling Coach of the Year award is nominated and voted on by the leagueâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s head coaches.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Southwestern Athletic Conference announced its 2014 All-SWAC Women’s Tennis teams with Kersten Vanem of Alcorn State receiving SWAC Player of the Year honors and Prairie View A&M’s Taylor LeFridge garnering SWAC Freshman of the Year. The individual awards were voted on by the league head coaches with first and second team selections based on records in round up play.

LeFridge is also joined by teammate Brittany Harrell on the first team doubles with the list including Southern’s Darnesha Moore and Gabrielle Moore and Jackson State’s Kesica Jayapalan and Harshini Reddy.

Vanem earned her second SWAC Women’s Tennis Player of the Year after receiving the award in 2012. She posted an 8-1 record in singles competition in conference play. Overall, she notched an 8-4 record for the year and 8-2 in doubles versus SWAC opponents. Vanem helped the Lady Braves to 5-2 mark in round-up play. LeFridge finished undefeated in the conference as PVAMU’s top player in singles play. She spotlighted her first collegiate season with a 6-0 record leading the Lady Panthers to a 5-2 mark after the SWAC round ups. She also capped doubles play during the regular season at 7-0. Vanem and LeFridge are joined on the all conference first team singles Kesica Jayapalan (Jackson State), Julia Angermann (Jackson State), Darnesha Moore (Southern), Brittany Harrell (Prairie View A&M), and Christine Gwodog (Prairie View A&M).

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Southwestern Athletic Conference released its 2014 All SWAC Men’s Tennis teams with Jackson Varney (Prairie View A&M) earning Player of the Year honors for a consecutive season and Nischay Rawal earning the top freshman award. The individual awards were voted on by the league head coaches with first and second team selections based on records in round up play.

Rawal also was selected to the first team doubles with match mate Garry Amor and teammates Nikita Kostikov and Ernesto Santillan. The first team doubles also includes: Prairie View A&M’s Bruno Snyder and Daniel Vasquez and Alabama State’s Dylan Cleary and Jarred Thompson.

Varney remained unbeaten in SWAC play since his arrival after earning the top player and freshman award last year. He collected a 6-0 record at No. 1 singles in league play while help carrying PVAMU to a 3-2 mark for the round ups. He also closed out the season with 4-2 record in doubles action. Overall, he tallied an 11-6 record going 5-6 in non-conference play for the Panthers. Rawal closed out SWAC play without a loss going 5-0 to nurture a 10-3 record overall. He finished 5-3 in non conference action going 6-10 (3-2 SWAC) as one half in doubles play. He helped the Braves go undefeated in the league during the round ups. Varney and Rawal landed on the All SWAC Men’s Tennis first team singles which includes: Alcorn State’s Lucas Morviac and Max Tkachenko, along with Jackson State’s Camilo Patino and Jose Luque.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Southwestern Athletic Conference announced its 2014 All-SWAC Softball teams and individual award winners on Tuesday prior to its postseason tournament. Alabama State’s Meagan Dixon landed Player and Hitter of the Year honors. Jackson State highlighted the individual honors with Breea Jamerson voted Pitcher of the Year, Kelsey Townsend tabbed Newcomer of the Year and head coach Rick Fremin earning Coach of the Year honors. Krystalani Yockman of Texas Southern and Deja Talton of Mississippi Valley State shared this season’s Freshman of the Year award. Dixon completed a senior campaign at ASU in which she ranked among the conference’s top 10 in several statistical categories. She led the conference in slugging (.939), runs scored (46), total bases (107), home runs (13) and RBI (48), while her .456 batting average ranked second this year. Jamerson was JSU’s ace allowing an earned run average of 2.74 pitching 133 innings. She held opponents to a league best .245 batting average while leading the SWAC in wins (12) and saves (3). She finished the regular season ranked second in total strikeouts (83) and strikeouts looking (30). Jamerson was selected SWAC Pitcher of the Week on three occasions through the course of the season. On the year, Townsend pitched 146.2 innings tallying nine wins in 24 starts. She finished in the top ten in earned run average (4.49) allowing 115 runs while striking out 53 batters. butions to their respective teams. TSU’s Yockman was fourth in the league with a .670 slugging percent. She scored 27 runs, 34 RBI, eight home runs while covering 61 total bases. She started 34 games played and her .374 batting average ranked in the top 10 in the conference. Talton carried MVSU with 22 RBI, six doubles, and four home runs. She collected 53 total bases and a slugging percent of .438 with a batting average of .273. Defensively, she registered 49 assists. Fremin led JSU to a 16-1 in the SWAC and the most wins in conference play while head coach of the Lady Tigers. JSU sits atop the SWAC in ERA (3.67), stolen bases (113), putouts (1,035), and assists (495). On March 25, JSU highlighted its non-conference slate with a 3-1 win over Arkansas. Dixon and Jamerson were each named first-team All-SWAC performers and were joined on the 11-member squad by Thomasina Garza (Texas Southern), Kendall Core (Alabama State), Lauren Aikens (Jackson State), Alisa Navarro (Prairie View A&M), Monica Castillo (Texas Southern), Sydney Wesley (Southern), Canessa Swanson (Jackson State), Sammantha Jimenez (Texas Southern) and Angela Perez (Grambling State).

Texas Southern led all teams with nine selections overall while tying JSU with three selections on first team. JSU followed with four selections while MVSU (3), Alabama State (2), and Alcorn State (2) rounded out the most picks per team. BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – After winning its first Eastern Division title since 1994, Alabama State earned three individual Southwestern Athletic Conference awards, as shortstop Emmanuel Marrero was named Player of the Year, Joseph Camacho earned Pitcher of the Year, and Mervyl Melendez was voted Coach of the Year.Alabama A&M outfielder Andrew Utterback received the conference’s Hitter of the Year, first baseman Tilur Smith becomes the league’s consecutive Newcomer of the Year from Jackson State, and Prairie View A&M outfielder Cody Den Beste was picked Freshman of the Year. The awards and All-SWAC team selections were voted on by the league’s head coaches and sports information contacts. Marrero helped guide ASU to on of its best seasons in program history. While hitting .327, he leads the nation in triples (10) and ranks 1oth in RBI (55). Among leading the conference in triples and RBI, he ranks first in the SWAC in hits (67), total bases (108), two-out RBI (23), and runners advanced (38). He finished the regular season second in assists (151) while leading the Hornets in all seven categories. For a consecutive season, ASU is spotlighted by its ace earning top pitching honors. Camacho capped the regular season with a 9-1 record on the mound earning the most wins among pitchers in the SWAC. He currently sits second in the league with a 2.36 ERA with 58 strikeouts. He enters the 2014 SWAC Baseball Tournament holding opponents to a .248 batting average, which ranks among the conference’s elite. He has not surrendered a home run on the year receiving the award after current teammate T.J. Renda captured the honor in 2013. Utterback powered AAMU to its first 20win season since 2009. He sits atop the conference with a .406 batting average which ranks ninth in NCAA Division I. In addition to his batting average, he leads the SWAC in slugging percentage (.600) and on-base percentage (.517). With 160 at-bats on the year, he has recorded 12 doubles, two triples, five home runs, 40 RBI and 27 runs scored.

Smith ranks in the top three or leads JSU in all of the major hitting statistics. He racked up 48 hits and 32 runs scored to lead all SWAC newcomers. He ranks ninth in the conference in hitting and leads JSU with a .340 batting average, a .532 slugging percentage and a .448 on-base percentage. Smith registers a team best in triples (2) and doubles (14), while posting three home runs and 26 RBI. He follows teammate Charles Tillery; who earned the newcomer award last year. Den Beste finished the SWAC season as PVAMU’s leader in triples (3) batting average with two outs (.385) percentage reached as a leadoff hitter (.462), percentage advancing runners (.577) and is tied atop its list in stolen bases (7). In his third year at the helm, Melendez spearheaded Alabama State to program milestones including: overall record (3419), conference mark (21-3) mark and back-to-back 30-win seasons. The Hornets won their entire conference series for the first time en route to its first Eastern Division championship since 1994. The Hornets historic season included wins over Auburn and No. 4 Miami. Marrero, Camacho and Utterback land on the All-SWAC first team with Alabama State’s Einar Muniz (2B), Richard Amion (OF), Richard Gonzalez (C), and Waldyvan Estrada (DH). Also among the first team selections are Alabama A&M’s Austin Hulsey (1B), Southern’s D.J. Wallace (OF), Arkansas-Pine Bluff’s Kevin Walsh (RP), and Jackson State’s Melvin Rodriguez (3B) and Desmond Russell (SP). Alabama State led all selections with seven overall including six on the first team. Alabama A&M posted four picks followed by Texas Southern with three. Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Jackson State, Southern, and Prairie View A&M finished with two overall. Alcorn State had one player make the all conference teams among the 24 players selected.
