The Co-op should have a book share area where customers and members can swap books or leave books they have already read. Also, does the Co-op carry Grid Magazine? - Colleen Thank you for your suggestion, Colleen! We love this idea - we encourage our customers, members, and employees to share knowledge and ideas. We will look into this and hopefully have this projected started soon. Sincerely, Swarthmore Co-op

MAD! his quarter’s Members Appreciation Day is extra special. In addition to being our final MAD of the year, we are celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Co-op current building.
Since 2004 and the opening of our new storefront, the Co-op expanded its departments, recruited 1,000s of new members, and kept the tradition of the co-op business model alive in this community. In honor of our members’ undying support, we’re hosting a community block party! Join us on October 18th from 5 PM – 9 PM for a night of great food; music; games and children’s’ activities, including giant Jenga, checkers, and pumpkin painting; and good company. LIVE COOPERATIVELY www.Co-opMonth.coop
ooperatives across the country have been celebrating Co-op month since the 1930s and the holiday became nationally recognized in 1964. There are over 30,000 different cooperatives in the United States, ranging from financial/credit services, food stores, housing, and electricity services, all following the co-op member-owner business model. A cooperative exists to serve its members, but what makes co-ops unique is that the members are also the owners. So, in addition to getting the products and services you need, you also have a say in the business decisions your cooperative makes. Rather than rewarding outside investors with its profits, a co-op returns surplus revenue to its members in proportion to how much they use the co-op. This democratic approach to business results in a powerful economic force that benefits the co-op, its members and the communities it serves. Cooperation is defined as working together towards the same end, and joining forces to accomplish a task that one can’t achieve alone. Simply put, co-ops provide the framework that allows people to get what they want in a way that better meets their economic, social and cultural needs. And because cooperation builds strong bonds between the people who use products and the people who supply them, co-ops offer a way to transform the way business is done. Co-ops give you the opportunity to get the products and services you need on a daily basis while strengthening the community around you.
In addition to a co-op’s commitment to serving its members, most adhere to a set of seven principles that help guide the business. And as a result, many co-ops set a standard for the surrounding business community with a commitment to environmental and social responsibility. Co-ops are based on values not unlike those we subscribe to individually, including self-responsibility, democracy, equality, honesty and social responsibility. In addition to these common values, seven basic principles serve as guidelines to provide a democratic structure for co-ops around the world. While adoption of these principles is not required, most co-ops choose to adopt them for their business. The seven principles are: Voluntary and open membership Democratic member control Member economic participation Autonomy and independence Education, training and information Cooperation among cooperatives Concern for community
