On September 9, 2018, Swallow-a-Bicycle Theatre presented Calgary Theatre in Flux: a forum about our future.
The event was an attempt to step back from present challenges and anxieties, zoom out, look at our current situation, at how we got here, and at our possible futures.
For this zine, I approached fourteen of those I consider to be the city’s most exciting young theatre artists (ages 25 and younger) and asked them to respond to one or several of the following:
• If you have your way, what will Calgary’s theatre landscape look like in 2025? In 2050? In 2100?
• What is one thing that you wish the current leadership of Calgary’s theatre companies knew, understood and acted upon?
• What hopes do you have for your own artistic career?
Pay close attention to what they have to say. Keep this zine at your desk, or on your fridge; flip through it every now and then. These pages offer just a glimpse at their hopes, fears, observations, ideas, provocations, concerns, wishes and offers.
