PRODUCTS OF INDIAN ARTISANS 1
About Sevya „Sevya‟ means “that which needs caring.” „Sevya‟ stands for the preservation of indigenous art forms of India that are endangered by supporting rural and tribal artisans, reviving extinct art forms, and showcasing the products in the global arena. A brainchild of Swami Dayananda Saraswati, renowned teacher of Vedanta and the founder of the Arsha Vidya Gurukulam (www.arshavidya.org), Saylorsburg, PA, „Sevya‟ is not just another avenue for marketing Indian handicrafts. It is a vision of service through mindful and conscious consumption, through caring for the environment and humanity at large. Part of the revenue earned through the sale of these handicrafts is used to fund development programs throughout India. All „Sevya‟ products are hand-crafted by artisans in India using the finest natural materials, dyes and fibers. Hand-spun and hand-woven cotton and silk are used for Sevya clothing, accessories and home furnishings. „Sevya‟ offers an extensive range of “ahimsa” silk products such as scarves, stoles, shawls and throws. „Sevya‟ stationary is made from 100% recycled paper. „Sevya‟ has greeting cards, book marks and decorations made from palm leaves. What is „Ahimsa‟ Silk? „Ahimsa‟ silk is wild silk that is cultivated on forest trees. The silk is spun after the silk worm has become a moth and flown out of the cocoons, giving a lustrous, textured look to the yarn and the weave.
Hand-woven Woolen Scarves & Shawls: These woolen scarves & shawls are hand-spun & hand-woven, using yak, merino & angora wool. In the weaving communities of India, the entire family is involved in different stages of production, from the reeling and spinning of the yarn to the dyeing and weaving. The looms are kept in their homes and both men and women do the weaving in between their household and agricultural work.
Handmade Paper Products: These beautiful handmade paper products are made by street children in western India as part of an “Earn & Learn” program. Since parents from low-income families can often not afford to send their children to school, this program helps the children to go to school and also learn a craft in a safe and supportive environment.
Lacquer & Wooden Toys: These beautiful toys are made with natural dyes, mixed with lac, & applied to wood. The toys are polished with cactus leaf, which gives them their natural luster.
Block Printing: The art of block printing has been practiced in India for many centuries, with each region having its own distinctive style and motifs. The wooden blocks are carved in elaborate designs and each color is printed with a different block to complete the motif. When natural dyes are used, the fabric is washed after each color is printed. As a result, it can take 3-4 weeks to produce a single hand block printed rug.

Embroidery: Indian embroidery dates back to 2300-1500 BC and is done in various regions, with each having a unique style. For women in rural and urban India, embroidery is an intrinsic part of their lifestyle, and they adorn their clothing with specific designs for special occasions. Today, embroidery is an important source of income for many women and, with increasing respect and appreciation for these products, they are able to live with greater dignity and prosperity.
