PRESS RELEASE WASTECON 2011 Chapter participation and awards The Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) Caribbean-Puerto Rico Chapter participated in the annual solid waste conference, WASTECON 2011 held August 23-25, 2011 in Nashville, Tennessee. New and active members participated in the different certification courses, technical sessions, and seminars that distinguish this annual event. During the Awards Breakfast event, our Chapter was honored with the following recognitions: SWANA Caribbean-PR Chapter won largest percentage increase in membership, with an 18% increase to a total of 105 members. Project presented by Mr. Mickey Ray won the 2010 SWANA Gold Award in Public Education. Students from various Puerto Rican high schools proposed amendments to environmental laws. Two bills were passed by the Senate of Puerto Rico, thanks to students' participation and initiatives. During the SWANA International Board (IB) meeting, held at the same venue on August 20 and 21, 2011, our chapter received the approval for hosting the 2013 mid-year IB meeting in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Working groups and membership involvement will be needed for this event to be successful.
Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure - Recycling Initiative Chapter participation and future involvement Members of the Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) Caribbean-Puerto Rico Chapter assisted the non-profit association Susan G. Komen Puerto Rico in their first attempt to segregate waste generated during the race for recycling purposes. This initiative was a collaborative effort driven by members our chapter, Scuba Dogs, and Sierra Club. Our board appreciates the participation of members present during this event, especially to the leader designated for this effort, Mrs. Alyson Byrne. Members from our chapter will aid Susan G. Komen Puerto Rico in the development of a final report on this year's efforts, and formally creating a Pink for Green initiative throughout next year's race planning phase.

NOTA PÚBLICA WASTECON 2011 Participación del capítulo y premios El capítulo de Puerto Rico y el Caribe de Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) participó en la conferencia anual, WASTECON 2011 el pasado 23 al 25 de agosto de 2011en Nashville, Tennessee. Miembros nuevos y activos participaron en los cursos de certificación, sesiones técnicas y seminarios que distinguen este evento. Durante la actividad de entrega de premios, nuestro capítulo fue galardonado con los siguientes reconocimientos: El capítulo de Puerto Rico y el Caribe de SWANA, recibió reconocimiento por el mayor porcentaje de crecimiento de membresía, con un incremento de 18% a un total de 105 miembros. Proyecto presentado por el Sr. Mickey Ray fue reconocido con el Premio de Oro en Educación Pública. Estudiantes de varias escuelas superiores de Puerto Rico propusieron enmiendas a leyes ambientales, de los cuales dos llegaron a ser proyectos de ley aceptados por el Senado de Puerto Rico. En las reuniones de la Directiva Internacional (IB, por sus siglas en inglés) de SWANA, llevadas a cabo en la localidad antes mencionada el pasado 20 y 21 de agosto de 2011, nuestro capítulo recibió la aprobación para que San Juan, Puerto Rico sea la sede de estas reuniones durante el primer semestre del año 2013. Grupos de trabajo y participación de los miembros y entidades comer4ciales será necesario para que este evento sea un completo éxito.

Komen Puerto Rico en su primer intento de segregar desperdicios generados durante la carrera para su posterior reciclaje. Esta iniciativa fue un esfuerzo colaborativo impulsado por miembros de nuestro capítulo, Scuba Dogs y Sierra Club. Nuestra directiva aprecia la participación de miembros presentes durante este evento, en especial a la líder designada para esta iniciativa, la Sra. Alyson Byrne. Miembros de nuestro capítulo asistirán a Susan G. Komen Puerto Rico en la redacción del informe final de esta iniciativa y a formalmente crear la iniciativa Pink goes Green durante la fase de planificación de la carrera del próximo año.
