Celebrating Birmingham’s hospitality superstars Many luminaries from the hospitality industry gathered at Edgbaston Cricket Stadium in June to celebrate, reward and highlight the great work done within the city at places where people eat, drink and sleep.

The inaugural Birmingham Food Drink & Hospitality Awards was held on Monday 6th June, hosted by celebrity TV personality and proud Brummie, Alison Hammond. The Awards are the first of their kind, including a plethora of categories celebrating everything from the best fine dining restaurants, oriental restaurants and most popular street food to best chef, best restaurant manager and best food and drink blogger, to name a few. The awards’ charity partner, Love Brum raised £2000 for Birmingham and District Deaf Children’s Society. Winners spanned the Michelin Star establishment Purnell’s who won two awards to pop up street food brand Low ‘N’ Slow, and came from independents as well as national brands.

Birmingham Food, Drink and Hospitality Awards’ Co-Founder, Anita Chumber alongside Associate Partner, Anita Champaneri, MD of Delicious PR said: “A big thank you to our main sponsors Pepsi Max and support from Edgbaston Stadium, Pathway Group, Britvic, The Sky Bar, High Line, Hollywood Monster, Mr McQueen, Birmingham City University, Vision Print, Birmingham Updates, RBH and our Ambassadors, Paul Fulford, Headz Up Business, TAG Network, Jas Sansi Photography. “And a huge thank you to our Media Partners, Swan Publishing, Sixtynine Degrees, Dine Birmingham and Charity Partner, Love Brum, and supported by Visit Birmingham and Vibrant Networks. “And above all, thanks to the people from the city of Birmingham for making this event so inclusive and successful. “Huge congratulations to the winners. We look forward to seeing you again next year for Birmingham Food, Drink and Hospitality Awards 2017!” For more info about the Birmingham Food, Drink & Hospitality Awards visit thebfdhawards.co.uk or contact on 0121 382 8362 5

Glynn Purnell Top chef cuisine This Chelmsley Wood Blues man at heart, cares as much about encouraging young people as he does about the appearance, texture and flavour of one of his recipes.

Glynn is one of the UK’s finest chefs at the top of his game. He has Purnell’s Michelin starred restaurant, Purnell’s Bistro and Gingers Bar in Birmingham and has published his own cook book memorably titled “Cracking Yolks and Pigs Tales”, full of delicious recipes. Birmingham Soup is one - hinting at his roots. “Did you want to become a chef from an early age?” I asked him. “Yes. From day one. It was going down the Birmingham markets with my dad and seeing all these unusual vegetables. We always went to this one butcher to order the meat from and he would give us 4 or 5 pigs’ trotters. My mum would braise them in the pressure cooker and by the time they were cooked, Blind Date was starting, so I would sit down in my pyjamas, with a little plate and on it a pig’s trotter and a packet of plain crisps”. The story of Glynn’s career to date began (not by design) at The Metropole Hotel at the NEC. Glynn gives credit to two people at the Metropole who encouraged and supported him through his apprenticeship: Tony Morrin, then the head chef of the restaurant and Mark Hill, the sous chef. They must now look at Glynn’s Michelin Star success and feel a sense of pride at the ‘leg-up’ they gave the youngster. Many of his Metropole work friends were from Knowle and Dorridge and he’d socialise with them at The Mason’s Arms. He went to Solihull College for a course on his day release. He’d learn all the practical stuff and then when the theory got dull… “I’d naff off and go get a couple of pints at the Mason’s Arms and catch the 71 bus back to Chelmsley Wood - and that’d be my day off!” >>

You can find the recipe for this delicious dish at swanpublishing.org photo credit: Laura Edwards

Glynn feels passionate about getting a message to students making their career choices… “don’t allow yourself to be pushed into a box. If you’re naturally creative, give 100% in academics but then give 100% too, to using your talent. Anyone can be a success if they remain positive and determined with the right attitude. “Set-backs are part of life… create your recipe, research the necessary ingredients and make it happen.” Written by Julia Parsons Glynn’s book “Cracking Yolks and Pig Tales” is available for £12.00 from Amazon and other book-sellers. To find out more about Glynn’s handywork and book a table at his restaurant visit purnellsrestaurant.com or call on 0121 212 9799

Solihull Moors on the up Two local lads write about the changes we’re seeing in Solihull football...

It’s been a depressing season for the city’s football clubs… Birmingham City failing to make the playoffs and Aston Villa relegated in one of the most humiliating ways. But Silhillian football followers’ moods have been lifted by a small Conference North (soon to be Conference Premier) team storming the league with games to spare, and being crowned champions. They are called Solihull Moors. A team founded from the merger of Moor Green and Solihull Borough in 2007, which have been battling for promotion in the last few years. But now they’ve done it! Next season they’ll be playing against the Football Conference’s big boys – like ex-football league Torquay United and Tranmere Rovers. A8

With a new ground extension they’ll be able to cope with the demand of the bustling fans. The fans (us included!) are optimistic – as shown by the pitch invasion (in the pictures above) in the game against Hednesford Town FC, which they sadly lost 2 -1, but we harmoniously sang our hearts out as the Mighty Moors had already stormed the division. It’s worth remembering that season tickets are free to under-12 year olds if bought with an adult season ticket and it’s just £30 for anyone 12-15. Their games will now be broadcast on BBC local Radio. written by Dan Priestly and Dom Lynch age 13

Herbalist Jenny Jones

photographed by Seven Star Photography www.sevenstarphotography.co.uk

Herbs for fragrant cleaning freshness Our herbalist Jenny Jones gives you some recipes and ideas... Many people are becoming aware that modern chemical cleaners are contributing to ill health, so here are some ideas for making your own safe, fragrant cleaning products to use all around the house. Choose your favourite herbs from the lists below:

Disinfecting: Basil, chamomile, clary sage,

eucalyptus, lavender, peppermint, rose geranium and thyme.

Make a ‘tea’ with the water and lavender by bringing to the boil, removing off the heat and steeping for half an hour. Strain out the lavender keeping the water and when cool add vodka and essential oils. Put into a clean spray bottle and label. Use away from polished wood.

Cleansing Vinegar

This is a fragrant recipe excellent for many purposes but particularly good for cleaning and disinfecting kitchen and bathroom surfaces, as a fabric softener in your washing machine or in your mop bucket water to clean and disinfect the floors.

Insect repellent in an oil base: Basil, bay,

Fill a large glass jar with citrus peel such as grapefruit, orange lemon or lime, then add dried herbs such as sage, thyme or lemon verbena. Cover with white vinegar, put on a lid and leave to steep for 2 weeks, shaking the jar occasionally. After two weeks strain, bottle and label the concentrate. This can then be diluted and put into a clean spray bottle.

Soothing Room Spray

It is important to label the products you make, and ensure that no one in your household has an allergy to the herbs used.

Anti-fungal: Chamomile, lemon, peppermint, rosemary, tea-tree, thyme. Anti-bacterial/antiseptic: Bay, cinnamon, eucalyptus, lavender, oregano, rosemary, tea-tree, thyme. chamomile, coriander, thyme, rosemary, peppermint, lavender.

100ml Water 25gm lavender flowers 20ml cheapest vodka or rubbing alcohol from a chemist 10 drops of essential oil (I like rose geranium) 20 drops lemon oil.

Jenny Jones is a retired fellow of The National Institute of Medical Herbalists. After practicing for 30 years she became a Trustee of the Herb Society and helped train future herbalists as a tutor at the University of Central Lancashire. 9

In response to increasing instances of unscrupulous behaviour on behalf of other emergency roofing providers, Adam Askey is launching its new ethical ‘Emergency Roofing Service’. Adam Askey has provided roofing services to home owners across the Midlands for over 40 years. It is one of the most successful roofing companies in the UK and has a consistently high satisfaction rating. “We hear some shocking stories about outrageous prices being charged for so-called ‘emergency roofing’,” says Steve Dickson, Head of Sales at Adam Askey. “When our Emergency Roofing Service is called out, we only charge an emergency rate for the time it takes us to make the roof safe and watertight. We then arrange for our regular expert repair team to return and repair the roof fully, at our standard hourly rate. I believe our new ethical ‘Emergency Roofing Service’ will set new service standards.” Call 0121 705 4242 or visit adamaskey.co.uk for more information. 12

Audio newspaper for Solihull Did you know that Solihull has its very own free talking newspaper? If you or a friend of yours is visually impaired then this service can help you keep up with local news.

Solihull Borough Talking Newspaper Association (SBTNA) is a small, independent, registered charity run entirely by volunteers. For 35 years, they’ve provided a free audio newspaper covering local news and a separate quarterly magazine for visually impaired people, mainly within the Solihull area but also for people who have moved out of the area but like to keep up with the local news. About 60 volunteers work as editors, sound engineers, readers and copiers at their facility in The Core at Solihull library. Memory stick (USB) players are provided free of charge. To cover the cost of this weekly activity the charity is reliant on the kindness of donations. Once recordings have been chosen, prepared, edited and duplicated, the memory sticks are put into mailing wallets and delivered by Royal Mail free of charge to listeners and then returned by freepost back to SBTNA at The Core by re-using the freepost wallet. A24

Approximately 160 listeners receive the Talking Newspaper every week and the magazine quarterly. Derek Bush the charity’s information officer said; ”We provide a variety of local news and magazine items and we know, from the kind comments we have received from our listeners, how much they look forward to each edition”. Mr Law is one such listener who said; “Because of my poor vision I needed someone kind enough to spend a few hours a week reading the papers to me. Now I don’t have to rely on anyone. The paper has changed the way I spend my day. I can now listen wherever and whenever I wish”. Human of Solihull - Nurse Jan Biggs

The kindest light radiating through the darkness Our special person this issue is a palliative care nurse working out of Solihull Hospital. If you are perhaps coping with the care of a member of your family or are yourself in an end stage deteriorating condition when nothing more medically can be done - you may find this angel by your side. From early childhood, Jan wanted to be a nurse and never wavered in her career choice. Growing up in Allesley village near Coventry, Jan celebrates 35 years in her challenging but rewarding role. She worked for four years at the world renowned St Christopher’s hospice - the first of its kind founded by Dame Cecily Saunders in 1967. Jan takes uncertainty out of dying - something which will happen to every living thing on this planet. Oddly the subject is often one of taboo to discuss, so fear of the unknown can be overwhelming with little sense of control or acknowledgement of an individual’s life journey. Jan spends time with patients once the ward A26

staff have referred them to her, listening, chatting wanting to know what is the most important thing to them and will do her best to see issues resolved with closure and completion for the patient, regardless of faiths and culture. Part of a close knit team, their motto is: “Nobody is perfect but a team can be”. Jan informally teaches ward nurses the understanding to recognise the right time to bring her on board. She will link with community and social support teams… it’s not just about end of life. Her ability to de-medicalise terminology and help join the dots in all areas of communication and treatment are vital. Sharing the burden of worry in itself is helpful. How does Jan cope and download the stress of her job? She hikes with her husband, letting nature do its healing to her spirit. Despite the challenges, she loves what she does and feels privileged in her role of ‘being there’ for families and patients - shining a light to help them through the tunnel of their darkest hours.

Stamp duty - could you be caught out? Earlier this year new stamp duty land tax (SDLT) rules were put in place - but did you know that not only buy-to-let investors could be affected? Some first time buyers could find themselves paying the extra 3% surcharge such as those that inherit a residential property then go on to purchase a second property. Leighann Richards of The Wilkes Partnership explains.

Purchase price Basic SDLT rate Higher SDLT rate Up to £125,000

Over £1.5 m

The rules are complex and it would depend on certain factors to see whether or not the 3% surcharge would be payable on your purchase therefore it is advisable to discuss this with a specialist before committing yourself to a purchase.

Historically, when buying a home you would calculate your budget, find a property, agree the price, apply for a mortgage, and only then instruct solicitors. These new complex stamp duty rules have turned this process on its head. Now it is advisable to talk to a solicitor first to determine your stamp duty liability so that you are aware of this cost whilst negotiating the purchase. Otherwise you could be in for an unpleasant surprise after you thought you had considered all of the costs involved. You could find yourself needing to increase your budget or lose the property and go back to square one. The complexity of the new SDLT rules doesn’t stop there. If you own your own property as a single person and then go on to purchase a property with your partner for your family to live in you could be liable to pay the higher rates. And if parents want to help their children get onto the property ladder advice should be sought from a specialist in order to determine whether the transaction attracts the additional 3% SDLT surcharge. It is best to seek legal advice as early on in the process as possible, and it could even save you money by giving you room for negotiation. If you need advice on property purchase matters contact Leighann Richards at The Wilkes Partnership lrichards@wilkes.co.uk or 0121 233 4333 / www.wilkes.co.uk

Warm summer nights... call for more lights What if we don’t want the glorious garden hours to be limited to the daytime and the occasional party? What if we want them to continue into the night? Well, there is a tasteful midway point between bedazzling your garden like it’s christmas and having no outside lighting at all, let’s find it together.

What does it achieve? Your motivation may be to showcase your home to its full potential from the garden, perhaps it’s to have a more pleasant view through the windows as night falls or even to extend the evening living space out on to the patio; a delicate arrangement of lights can do it all.

How best to arange them? Planting a row of glowing downlighters in amongst the flowers will create a very inviting and attractive night-time garden. It’s also a good idea to pick your favourite trees and place some uplighters directly below them, illuminating the branches and lower foliage. Fairy lights in the bushes are a tad too Christmassy so it’s best to steer clear, but firesafe enclosed candles and lanterns are quite seasonally ambiguous - and make very pretty centrepieces. A32

3. What will it cost? Solar-powered lighting is as close to free as it gets and it takes all of the effort out of personally maintaining the garden lighting but unfortunately they’re not half as bright as lights connected to the mains which may require the help of a qualified electrician. If you want to keep close track of your energy consumption then you can always opt for re-chargable battery powered lights, which are bright, beautiful and keep your peace of mind. Luftwaffe over Birmingham Imagine what it was like 75 years ago when Birmingham experienced the majority of its dozens of German air raids. Based on extracts from his new book The Luftwaffe over Brum, author Steve Richards relates:

“In addition to night attacks, often with hundreds of aircraft, there were a handful of daylight nuisance raids with a solitary aircraft. November 1940 witnessed three such audacious attacks upon Birmingham’s suburbs.

“The city’s ordeal started in August 1940 but the most intense period was during November following the devastating attack on Coventry. The Germans gave Coventry the target number 53 whilst Birmingham was allocated target number 52.

“The night attacks were the most devastating. Between 19 - 23rd November a series of raids over Birmingham resulted in over 750 people being killed. The night of 11/12th December was the longest (about 13 hours) raid which came in two distinct phases and 170 people heartbreakingly lost their lives.

“Contrary to popularly held views, the Luftwaffe were not intent on terrorising civilians. They had a definite mission to disrupt Britain’s war industry and so three different Luftwaffe bomber groups were employed on specialist pathfinding operations. Two of these used highly sophisticated, but different, radio navigational beam systems. “KGr100 was the most effective of these three units and its first operation over Britain was against the Castle Bromwich aircraft factory and the nearby Fort Dunlop on the night of 13/14th August 1940. Once over the target, these specialist units would drop thousands of incendiaries to act as markers for the bombers following up behind.

“There was a period of relative calm until the second week of April 1941, two raids on consecutive nights saw the nightmare resume with around 400 fatalities. In July 1942, the Germans carried out a devastating surprise strike. 200 people lost their lives. But this was not the end… one more raid on 23rd April 1943 caused damage to property and personal injury, but thankfully, no fatalities.” The book Luftwaffe Over Brum can be ordered from www.birminghamair-raids.co.uk or from W H Smith. Impressively the author wrote this book by dictation as he is partially sighted, subscribing to The Talking Newspaper you can read about on page 24. 33

Dr Louise FRCGP congratulations! Instead of Dr Louise highlighting a medical problem for us this issue, we are immensely proud to tell you that last month she and two other doctors from Solihull were awarded Fellowships from The Royal College of General Practitioners. To have one of these GPs work in your borough acknowledged in a single year is remarkable, but Solihull has three who can now proudly add the letters FRCGP to all the others after their names. Fellowship of the internationally respected London based Royal College of GPs is their highest grade of membership and a way of recognising a few outstanding GPs’ achievements. • Dr Mark Sterry works at Grove Road surgery, a long established training practice in Solihull. He is also Solihull’s LMC secretary and BMA Treasurer. • Dr Bilal Patel is a GP partner in Solihull; chair of Solihull’s GP Federation and Honorary Clinical Lecturer at University of Warwick Medical School. • Dr Louise Newson is a part time GP in Shirley and a medical writer for various publications besides MY Solihull, Knowle & Dorridge, including www.patient.info ; The British Journal of Family Medicine and MIMS Learning. She writes numerous online courses for the RCGP. Dr Newson also runs a recently opened menopause clinic at Spire Parkway Hospital in Solihull.

Golf training for disabled children Solihull resident Michael Leek OBE has been instrumental in setting up a Trust that provides disabled children with golf training, whilst raising £80,000 for disabled golf provision. He has also been a major player in raising £1million to pay for a scanner at Solihull Hospital and is now president of Shirley Golf Club.

Quietly modest about their achievements, Shirley Golf Club in Solihull has been at the forefront of golf club coaching of youngsters with disabilities for over a decade and many of the club’s members have been involved, which is a great example of golfers ‘putting something back into the game’.

Michael Leek O

BE

It was this enthusiasm that brought Shirley Golf Club to the attention of the Golf Foundation. Since 2000, the club’s achievements include helping 3,000+ disabled/SEN children to enjoy golf. Enthusiasm among members has gained them respect and a reputation as a highly progressive club (members of Shirley GC have won prestigious Golf Foundation and England Golf Partnership awards in recent years). Club volunteers and their PGA Professional Stuart Bottrill and his staff are skilled in coping with a range of disabilities (including cerebral palsy, Down’s syndrome, severe learning difficulties and autism) offering six-week blocks of coaching and play. The Golf Foundation has backed Shirley GC with grants in the past and recently issued £2,000 as the club engages with other golf clubs to help them train to support disabled youngsters. Michael Leek and his co-organiser honorary treasurer John Lee are keen to share good practice further, inviting club officials to visit the Solihull venue and to see their coaching in action. Michael Leek said: “Some club volunteers and professionals are unsure of committing themselves to the demands of this project. We can change their thinking, demonstrate the special equipment and they can watch our coaching sessions. Teachers and carers from the schools always accompany children. This can be a hugely satisfying activity for any enthusiastic golf club.”
